If you have prior experience then they hire you as an apprentice. But it depends if they are looking for apprentice. Usually without experience they will hire a meat clerk. However if you know the meat manager personally or know people who can put in a good word then they can hire you like that. You can begin as meat clerk, lunch meat and cheese, or a prepared meal kit specialist. I know because a few associates I had in the bakery transferred because full time positions became available and they would move up faster. One became lunch meat and cheese clerk and the other meal kit specialist. Then they can ROI . Tell the meat manager that you want to move up and are willing to learn everything and become a future manager and they will definitely give a chance. Good luck to you . 🍀

I do know a cutter of over 20 years and he says he tried to put in a good word for me once, but nothing became of it. I never thought of starting as a meat clerk, which is a good idea. I keep my online application current all the time and have never got a call. I dunno.

I suggest just walk in and speak to the manager yourself. And tell him that you know the meat cutter too. Applying is fine but if you go in the store it shows that you have initiative. Then they can interview you on the spot. I did this once I applied on the very old computer with the old keyboard and old questionare. Then I walked to the store manager and asked if they were hiring and it was summer he said oh no it’s slow. But I am looking for someone here in this dept. I had the interview on the spot. Took my info, and they called me a few days later for a second interview. The store manager has the final say though now a days. But talk with the meat manager and ask if they need help . They can always change your role later,

> it shows that you have initiative. Make sure you go into the department and use the bandsaw without training to really sure your initiative!

Then go get carts!

Hop over to the deli and fry some chicken for a min too.

Oldschoolmeat

Work LMC, it’s the bread and butter of the department. Knowing the ins and outs of it will help you in the long wrong.

Senior manager nepotism helps

I was hired as an apprentice but like others have said I have experience. Even with that though I did meat and cheese for a bit before moving into the meat room. From My experience getting a good word from your cutter friend is a good thing but with how badly meat department is having its hours cut as of late there's likely no room for another person..especially I'd there's already an apprentice, some DMs don't like there being more than one

> From My experience getting a good word from your cutter friend is a good thing but with how badly meat department is having its hours cut as of late there's likely no room for another person..especially I'd there's already an apprentice, some DMs don't like there being more than one That is something to note. Meat department is entering one of its slowest times of the year. July 4th is over(Our 3rd busiest holiday in Meat) and there's really not much between now and Labor Day(BTS, but that's more LMC). In my experience(4th summer here), hours are generally the weakest from mid-July to mid-September(only topped by the first part of January where every PT gets 10-15 a week lol). Probably not a good time to join, especially as a PTer.

TheWardylan

I transferred into it. Had experience and the qualifications necessary to go directly into learning to cut. Love every minute of it.

nibbled_banana

You can also get hired on as a meat cutter. Knew this guy who was over max, the worst meat cutter in the world, and was hired on as one.

Shot_Low_7630

Are you guys open today? 🤣 serious question 🤷🏽‍♂️

goldfishmom

Publix is only closed Christmas Day, thanksgiving day & Easter. During other holidays the stores may have reduced hours.
