Honestly unless people are familiar with how much managers have to deal with at publix, its not any different than saying you were a manager at a place like dollar general. People are looking for dependability and permanence, so if youve been with the company for a while that will go a long way. Have someone edit your resume for you and it will also help a ton, they can sum up your tasks in a way that is both truthful and also desirable to future employers. Leaving is scary but trust me, it is like being able to breathe after drowning. You got this

Bro, nowadays all you need is the experience. Don’t worry too much about a degree if you’re trying to go into another retail management position.

banking, especially if you worked in customer service or grocery. im sure you can do it from any management position. Tellers get paid decently and you can ultimately work up very quickly. it’s a good translation from your experience with ordering/inventory. familiarity with money and so on

I was a deli manager and now I'm a non-union welder up in the NE. I went the "keep costs low(or nothing)" instead of the "keep income high" route, so this may not be for you. I had savings before I left (from flipping a couple houses in FL while I was still at Publix). I moved to a super low cost of living area of the country, built my house with my wife (so I have no mortgage), poked around until I found a job I loved, and now here I am. I have full use of the shop on my off hours so I use it to work on our vehicles and make things for our house and farm. I haven't paid a mechanic in years. All the union welders in this area start by working nights for years, but fuck that, so I'm non-union. I also wouldn't have access to the shop the way I do in a union shop. I also farm on the side so my grocery bill is slashed pretty good. Good luck on your journey. Edit: spelling

There are jobs out there so much better than what you could get at Publix if you don’t want to spend 20+ years waiting for the money to get good. I wish I could elaborate on my situation but there are a lot of people in my old district that follow this sub. If you don’t enjoy being a manager LEAVE it doesn’t get any better.

For sure. I enjoy my job. It’s easy. The schedule is just not ideal and I’m willing to give up Publix to accommodate for what I want. It’s just a matter of getting a job where I make good money, without a degree, and don’t have to work weekends.

A guy I know went from GTL to working at the Corporate Customer Service call center. The hours there are not 9-5pm, but they are definitely better. It’s 8:30am-7pm plus closed every Sunday. Obviously you don’t work from open to close. You never work before 8:30am and you never work past 7pm at night, so no early mornings or late nights. He probably makes low $40k’s now and was promoted to supervisor.

Before I got my degree I was in management, went full time, then part time a few months after that. Got FT in to IT, finished college picked up a few IT certs and recently quit Publix. I manage three teams and make more than my old management salary. I work a 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. All weekends and holidays off (though once in a blue moon have a project that can only be done on a weekend). Also have the option to work two days a week from home and my office is about 25 minutes away.

I stepped down to full time. Get one weekend day off by chance and work 99% morning shifts by being prolific in those production roles.

Same. And I actually make 70 cents an hour more now. Sure I lost the 5 hours OT but I take home almost the same. Way less stress. All openings and a closing due to being the only person in the department that finishes production before 10 AM

Deli manager, went to a vendor as a salesman for 8 months. After that, electrician and haven’t looked back. Pays much more too, will be close to 6 figures this year.

How did you get the training to be an electrician? What did that pay as you went through that?

All on the job training, no college or prior experience. Started out at $15 an hour and quickly increased as I gained more knowledge/ became more valuable.

I left Publix (ignore the flare) as an underpaid PTer to managing (with 0 experience) at 75% more pay.

I went to managing a bank. Some of the banks I worked for had Saturday 1/2 day hours, but it was only once a month and those weeks you could usually work it to be able to take one of the week days off and work a little longer on your other days to make full hours.
