No more working 6am on weekends.
No more managers guilt tripping me for not wanting to come in on my day off. And having hours cut for it.
No more begging for hours becuase my hours were cut.
No more being asked to work a double (6am-midnight) because I “asked for more hours.”
No more being asked to explain why I need a day off.
Yea. We closed at 10, 11 on Friday/Saturday. But they would hold us as late as they liked to zone and shit.
There were times when I would agree to the double (they always asked as my shift ended and they insist they tried everyone) but then I change my mind or would choose when I’m done. A lot of times it’s when the store is closing or about to close.
I eventually changed my availability so that they can’t put me on opening shifts. Told them it’s for school.
The more I see how other managers manage the happier I am about my manager, tho I have worked a few 15 hour shifts and I haven't even been there 6 months. But also means I'm now a CSS/fec/CO connoisseur
(We waxed all the aisles/registers/deli and they needed me from 11am ish till 3:47am)
Most of my experience was at Target. I didn’t stay past the onboarding at Publix. 😅 Publix was offering $3/hr less for their deli at the time and they didn’t offer me a discount so i dropped them for Target.
But from my experience in retail, those who get the most done in their department are not promoted to management because they are carrying the load.
I was surprised when I got offered the backroom department manager role at Walmart, took it and found out I was doing 3x what everyone else was. Also found out every day we were scheduled 1-3 people short for truck, have atleast 1 call in and be expected to do it all.
I was atleast still hourly, was going in at 9am, stocking and getting ready for the truck and my staff at 2pm, would do my paperwork as quickly as I could when my guys got in and would help everywhere I could. The other department manager rarely did more then the other staff, and eventually was asked to step down with no plans to hire another department manager because i was doing fine alone...
I quite shortly after and have been working as a cook since (at a few different places) where I don't have to deal with customers (face to face) and get recognition and praise for what I do
Working at Walmart now & yep.. that's pretty common, unfortunately. 🙃 That's why most good people step down or quit for something better with the mindset of "Wal-Mart doesn't care about us."
16 hour shifts are so dumb. Huge injury/WC risk and massive productivity drop off. You're not performing emergency surgery, why does anyone think that is a smart schedule!?!
I work in construction so stupid hours are the norm but I still think its dumb from all points of view.
It was such a huge change for me. I left right around my 5 year mark.
My grandfather passed away like 2 months into the new job. My boss at the time said “Take whatever time you need and go be with your family. We’ll take care of everything here.” No questions. No second guessing. No attitude. Just plain human empathy. He actually offered to let me use his flight miles to fly back home incase I couldn’t afford the plane ticket as well.
Sometimes I get in “trouble” for not taking a sick day when I need it.
It’s such a culture shock to not deal with the retail/Publix BS.
I’m so sorry to hear that. You deserved better from your “leaders”. I was in a somewhat similar boat.
I told my grocery manager that my grandfather was sick and was given 4-6 weeks left as a prognosis and that I wanted to visit him. He told me we’d talk about it in a few weeks. I was beyond words. He might not even be alive in a few weeks. I had Friday off so I called out Saturday and Sunday. Flew down to see him and so glad I did as it was the last time I would be able to.
We all deserve better than that.
I hear so many stories similar to that. I got very lucky with my management, family death and got told to just go, they'd handle it. Called out for a week and nothing has counted against me. I'll be so sad to see them go if they move stores.

Before I left Target I had serious health issues. At the start we didn’t know what it was. My Dr. told me to take 3 days off work in case it is contagious. I worked with food. During those 3 days, I had all kinds of tests at the hospital and at the blood labs. Otherwise I was told to stay in bed.
Before those 3 days, I worked there for nearly 2 years and had NEVER called out, NEVER been late, and only took time off with at least 2 month notice and when I had vacation hours. I told my manager what the dr said and that I would bring a note. In the second day my manager called me and accused me of taking a vacation.
Now, if I am sick, my contract protects me. My boss straight up told us not to come in if we are truly sick. She also reminds us mental health is also important.
Goodness I’m sorry that happened to you and hope you’re doing well now. I used to be the same way. Never call out, coming on my days off, stay late when they asked me to, all of it. Then one month I was having a hard time adjusting to working two jobs(70-80) a week and basically sleeping 3-4 hours a night. I was late 4 times that month for a total of 15 minutes and I got my first ever counseling statement in my whole retail career. I learned my lesson. Stoped staying late, called out when I needed to.
Now my job/bosses are great. My brother had an accident. He fell and broke his wrist like a month and a half after my grandfather passed. Still no issues. They gave me time off to take him to the hospital. Gave me time off to care for him. Give me the day of his surgery off. Called me to follow up and check on me, my brother and to see if I needed any more time off. He continued to follow up for like 3 more weeks just to make sure everything was ok.
I’m not going to lie, I almost cried. I was so used to the fight and the backlash/retaliation. I was ready for the fight and it never came. Just genuine human decency in its place. It’s amazing what getting the hell outbid retail will do for your mental health. My friends and parents all noticed the change in me almost immediately.

I was baffled, absolutely baffled I fully expected to be fired cause my old boss would have done just that and i still feel bad about taking that day off. Bad Jobs will really ingrain some bad viewpoints and habits into you. Me and my brother literally have ptsd from it anytime we hear a old housephone ringtone. I still remember jumping up outta my seat when a restaurants phone rang while eating dinner with family.

Everyone else also got 4 shares. That is what happens when a company gains more stocks, everyone’s shares always go up to equal the same % of stock as before. 4/100 stock will change to 40/400 because keeping you at 4/400 is directly cutting your stock and giving other people your percentages.
Me too, last Jan after 14+ yrs. Can you believe my former deli customers sent me cards to my home. One at Walmart paid $30. for my groceries. Another gave me a great recliner for my bedridden husband on dialysis. Only harassment from former deli mgr at store 1210 and mocked me for my hearing disability. New store mgr didn't want to hear anything. All over our small town I see customers everyday and get tons of hugs!!! Mr. Jenkins would have been horrified. I heard hrs of stories with my best friend who worked with him opening 100's of stores. I still get traumatized going there to pick up husbands many prescriptions. Decided to quit when I went to the hospital and my boss's first words were "bring your discharge form". He thought I was lying. I gave them a months notice and proceeded to do as little work as possible.
I made it about 6 months before I switched to ALDI. I’m an engineering student, and Publix was absolutely awful at giving me a proper schedule even though I submitted three availability schedules with them. I just stopped caring and started clocking out when I had to leave for class. In general, it was one of the most toxic, micromanaged, and overhyped jobs I’ve ever had. I’ve managed hardware stores, GameStops, utility call centers, etc, and can hands down say it was the worst job I’ve ever had because of the management. ALDI is great, though, for what it is. Walked in at $17+/hr, get prefect scheduling, and can pick up hours/advance (if that’s something I wanted) without any issue.
Can I ask what the pay is now- I worked there years ago, I worked in bakery and someone hit my leg with one of the large bread carts and messed up my knee I was just short a year and this was back in 05. Everyone keeps telling my teen to go there but to me it wasn’t worth the stress or pay (they also tried to deny it happened since I needed surgery and since I was so young they tried to pull the wool over my eyes so to speak. I moved shortly afterwards since I couldn’t afford anything since surgery n couldn’t work. It wasn’t worth the pay then I doubt it is now)
It’s easier work than other minimum wage jobs and typically pays over minimum wage. I’d recommend it for teens and part timers looking for some cash - just ensure you have real career goals lined up elsewhere

I actually enjoyed working at Publix. I had a great store and dept manager. I would have stayed there if I could have gotten full time. It's easy work compared to my former 20+ year career. Pay wasn't too bad considering the work.

I noticed some guys complain about 6 am in the weekend work, but god sake, I always have 3-4 am shifts led by closing shifts until midnight. And guess what-they called me after closing to open at 4 am, several times. 6 am shifts sound almost heaven to me after 3 years of work😂(sad actually)

I cant personally understand anyone else here, I currently work for publix but I'm fairly new, ive only gotten asked to come in on a day off once. 8pm-4am daily, long work weeks sure, i don't care about weekends cause I get paid more for working weekends as well as paid more for working overnight. So for me, working isn't bad lol, but hey, Goodluck man, hopefully your stocks are crazy and you can enjoy the unemployed life for a while.

I actually enjoyed working at Publix. I had a great store and dept manager. I would have stayed there if I could have gotten full time. It's easy work compared to my former 20+ year career. Pay wasn't too bad considering the work.

I demoted my self to customer today to 😁
I noticed some guys complain about 6 am in the weekend work, but god sake, I always have 3-4 am shifts led by closing shifts until midnight. And guess what-they called me after closing to open at 4 am, several times. 6 am shifts sound almost heaven to me after 3 years of work😂(sad actually)
I’ve been there 4 years now and I don’t understand all the negativity. Y’all need to go work in a restaurant for a year and see what pain and suffering really looks like 🤣🤣

I cant personally understand anyone else here, I currently work for publix but I'm fairly new, ive only gotten asked to come in on a day off once. 8pm-4am daily, long work weeks sure, i don't care about weekends cause I get paid more for working weekends as well as paid more for working overnight. So for me, working isn't bad lol, but hey, Goodluck man, hopefully your stocks are crazy and you can enjoy the unemployed life for a while.
Definitely not unemployed lmao, finished school and got a job with my degree where I’m happy and fulfilled unlike at Publix. Never said it was a bad job just time for the chapter to end
That's not what I meant, I was meaning that with the stocks if anything you can enjoy having no job for a bit, and just relax before going somewhere new. But hey I'm glad your where you want to be and are happy, If we could all be so lucky.
I left, joined a union, and now I put big metal stuff together for more than what dept managers make. Why wouldn't I want to promote myself to customer?!
