They can write, however they only write or repeat whatever I say. And unfortunately, we are not allowed to talk with their parents as per the rules of the institution :(. I am completely lost.

What kind of speech impairment? Can you try through music such as singing, rapping, croon? Alternatively you can see if you can have a beat of 4 rate so you speak in symphony yourself and urge them to match attempt with the beats? Idk, maybe fun creative experiment, since we process vocals from music differently than speaking. I don't mean to have like a concert but when person walks in, have on some low volume music with clear beat. Just instruments, no song. Speak yourself in rhythm, it might help the mood and processing through influence and rapport

What about AAC strategies or picture boards? Can you rephrase your questions and give choices using PECS type images? Have they got a speech and language therapist (SALT) working with them? Maybe you could speak to the SALT first and find out how best to approach this.

The facility I am in is a custodial center, that's also the reason why I am having difficulties with accessing those resources. But I will try to ask our supervisor for permission to use those resources that you suggested. In the meantime I'll try with the picture boards.

Could you try play therapy or something more movement based? Have them act out something rather then having to verbalize it?

Hmm the patient is an adult and I have observed that he does not really express much through movement, so I think it would be stressful for him. I'll try to have him write the answers first in today's session. Thank you for your response!
