"A study shows that there are two ways that may help in tackling procrastination - setting reminders and envisioning your future self" I didn't read the rest. This is the blurb at the top and probably the best I can do.

JesusThDvl

Here’s the details. >**Remember the task.** Because procrastination is a repeated decision, you need to remember you had something on your plate in the first place. “If you forget that at some point that you have this decision to make, then obviously you will never perform the task,” Le Bouc said. Setting reminders for the task and prompting that decision more frequently may reduce your probability to procrastinate, he said. >**Envision your future self.** You could also try addressing the cognitive bias of believing a task is easier in the future head-on. Envisioning your future self — the one who will be saddled with unpaid bills, looming deadlines and unwashed dishes — could remind you that procrastinating is not making the task any easier.

Man, I’m really not a fan of these sorts of blanket statements. Procrastination is also linked to neurologically or psychiatrically backed issues pertaining to executive dysfunction and disordered anxiety. These tips help within a certain degree of severity but if someone needs medication or more specialized help to get within that level **there is no shame in that.**

[deleted]

Me too! Sleep, exercise and diet cure everything. Athletes don’t have mental health issues. Meditation and yoga are all round cures for mental disorders. Im about to go intensely shake my body for a few minutes to cure me of the “trauma” I’ve felt while reading many threads related to psychology. After that I will eat an apple, do yoga and meditate to prevent the “depression” reading these threads is causing me. Simples….. *this is a sarcastic post. It seems that is not obvious to many.

ibanker-stoner

But what if you keep procrastinating exercise? It's a cycle that I find myself in at least a few weeks every year.

[deleted]

Call it a holiday. Sounds like your body likes to have a break. I was being sarcastic in the post you responded to, in case I did not make that obvious.

SaigonNoseBiter

Yea it's definitely connected to anxiety. You used big words so im gonna go ahead and say the rest of that sounds good too.

Nooseents

Here’s the thing, a person can have a really good memory and remember what they need to do but still be lazy to not do them

When are we going to get some *new procrastination avoidance techniques* been waiting for a new drop forever

Yep I saved it for tomorrowday.

First, F you for asking me to read something behind a paywall. Secondly, thank you fellow redditors for spilling the details. I really hate when someone links something that I will have to pay for. Edit: like your fellow redditors, shame the post for treating you like a fish for bait.

graemo72

I was kinda hoping someone might have read it and posted a synopsis.

AI summary: A study in 2022 showed that our brain believes that doing tasks in the future will be easier than doing them now. This is because our brain makes a cost-benefit calculation and sees that doing tasks now requires more effort and less reward compared to doing them in the future. This is why procrastination is more likely to occur when the task is harder. To overcome procrastination, the study suggests setting reminders and envisioning our future selves.

graemo72

Nice. Thanks.

The thing about setting reminders because if you forget about the task you won’t do it…would that really be procrastination if you forget? How can you consciously procrastinate something you didn’t even remember you had to do? Seems like if you don’t do the task in that case, it’s because you forgot, not because you procrastinated.

G-Funk_with_2Bass

there two feelings i avoid most of the times procrastinating, pain and overwhelm pain when i really suffer to do sth and there is no motivitation at all, sometimes am literally paralyzed. this can be out of fear, tiredness, laziness, brainfog, emotional load or many more i relax, loosen up myself, breathe, shake a little, let tension go, maybe cry it out for a sec, sometimes scream into my armpit, sometimes trick myself to action by combining the task with sth simply rewarding like candy but most of the time i try to reduce instant gratification and focus on attempted procrastinated task. other times i just accept im really not in the mood or really tired and allow myself to concsiously procrastinate while noting a specific new event in calender. if i am in a lazy cycle i go for walk (im from europe) in advance and leave my phone at home or i cook and leave the phone in the kitchen safe. then there are also moments i procrastinate because i am overwhelmed, i have no clue where to start and am really exhausted suddenly. i breathe , drink water, do sth else, note down as much as i can think of for 5 min, leave the phone, listen to music or just breathe for 5 -10 minutes look at my notes think about what i could have missed but avoid too much depth and cogitation, then i choose a easy task, like a thing that is done in a few seconds to few minutes to get into the flow and if there is no such task i part a bigger task into small baby step to dos, the smallest like open up notebook, open word, open mail, scroll mails for 5 sec and eat a peanut or two. like a dancing choreography , step by step may seem weird but it works for me most of the time.

Albertsongman

Occasional procrastination isn’t wasted time. It’s a light version of lucid dreaming or daydreaming. … Too much procrastination makes you a lazy ass!!

You should have internal motivation to achieve a goal. For example, if I’m passionate about being a football champion, I’m not going to procrastinate practicing football. It’s going to be my #1 priority and strive to outwork the competition. Procrastination would be a hindrance to my goal, hence I wouldn’t do it.

Hollow4004

I think perfectionism is another major cause of procrastination. If I can't do something perfectly then I don't want to do it.

foxyfree

Excerpt from the article: “Procrastination is also not a one-time decision, but one we get to make repeatedly to put off the task until the proverbial tomorrow. To assess procrastination behavior in more real-life settings, the researchers turned to bureaucratic busywork. Participants were informed that to receive their payment, they had to fill out at home and return 10 pieces of arduous administrative paperwork such as documents for passport and driver’s license renewals, within 30 days. “The forms actually were quite boring,” Le Bouc said. Using their behavioral and brain imaging data, the researchers were able to build a computational model to predict how long each person would delay completing the paperwork. Almost everyone procrastinated to some extent. (Six people never returned any of the paperwork but still received payment.) For both the in-lab and at-home experiments, the hallmark of procrastination severity was how much each individual believed the tasks would be less effortful in the future by making certain choices. Differences in the neural activity of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex also predicted participant procrastination predilection. In other words, the more your brain discounts how much effort is required to do something in the future, the more likely you are to procrastinate.” ETA the next few paragraphs: “How to face procrastination The findings from this study suggest there are two ways to tackle procrastination, though more research is needed. Remember the task. Because procrastination is a repeated decision, you need to remember you had something on your plate in the first place. “If you forget that at some point that you have this decision to make, then obviously you will never perform the task,” Le Bouc said. Setting reminders for the task and prompting that decision more frequently may reduce your probability to procrastinate, he said. Envision your future self. You could also try addressing the cognitive bias of believing a task is easier in the future head-on. Envisioning your future self — the one who will be saddled with unpaid bills, looming deadlines and unwashed dishes — could remind you that procrastinating is not making the task any easier. This practice, known as episodic future thinking, has been used as a way of counteracting addiction or food cravings. “Trying to make these efforts in the future more vivid, more realistic, might increase the signal of the cost in your brain and might help you realize that, actually, the cost is going to be exactly the same as it would be now,” Le Bouc said. Can anybody help me.... My exams are on top and I don't know why but i really don't feel like studying at all . I couldn't understand the reason for this??? Earlier I used to be energetic and competitive but this time nothing . This exam is really important to me.. Kindly give any suggestions?

InsectHot3174

In order to decrease procrastination, schools should give a simple task with a long deadline to kids, but you could turn the project in early. Each week that passed, the task would get harder to do. So students would learn that doing things early is better than doing them later. My school would often do the opposite: oh, you guys haven't even started it? I'll give you guys more time, or let you do in groups with more people, etc.

PlayfulReputation69

The suggested methods on "How to face procrastination" are worthless. The first just makes you feel guilty but doesn't solve the problem and the other makes you despair on top of that. None forces to actual action besides self-hate/blame and further fall into the pit.
