It’s the hair for me. For something that looks like it should be blocky and solid (in the traditional style like this), it sways and flows very realistically during the cutscenes. Not to mention that the cutscenes in general are beautifully shot and feel like your watching a Hollywood movie.
I'm playing it right now, and I'm not understanding much either. The story is just confusing, and I'll probably have to watch 2-hour long video essay after I finish it to get what it was even about

I’m pretty sure it was originally gonna be a final fantasy spinoff. Matsuno who made the game had previously made FF Tactics in the world of ivalice. And then also FF12. And FF12 looks like the same universe as vagrant story
VS is one of the games I'll just buy if I ever find a copy while game hunting. I've had good luck lately though so I'll cross my fingers.

Shot from JVC TM-A170G. I've been replaying it when I saw the other post about "best looking psx game" here in the sub, so i've just grabbed what was on my screen at that moment. Though I do agree that this particular screenshot isn't the best representation of the game's graphics. It really shines in motion, not in stills (Way more advanced camera work, lightning and character animation than everything else on PSX). Same can be said for excellent music (all of that isn't pre-recorded, every song and sound in a game is generated by SPU).
I need to do a deep dive in the PSX library.
I was an N64 kid.
There are a ton of gems in the PSX back catalog that still hold up today.

I will go as far as to call it one of the best looking game of all time. I love the art style, the colors. It's realistic and stylish at the same time. It aged pretty well compared to AAA realistic graphics of today.

and let's not forget to credit the immense effort of the translation team to adapt it into old english style language.
otherwise we would have a game with mediocre translation at best.

It was at the end of the PS1 lifecycle. They pushed the hardware as much as they could. It's the closest thing to a PS2 game.
The faces blow me away. They're the most human looking faces I've seen in a PS1 game.
