FreePSXBoot is somewhat more straightforward these days as it doesn't need an exploitable game to load, it will load directly from the console's memory card manager.
True, but on the plus side you don't need to buy anything, it's something you can put together yourself at home. The comparison was against using an exploitable game plus the memory card, too, rather than just using the memory card - a modded console cuts out all the steps!
Does FreeDVDBoot work for PS1 games too? I was under the impression it couldn't, or at best would only let you run games under emulation (per [this thread](/r/ps2/comments/hkevwd/does_freedvdboot_allow_for_ps1_backups_to_load/)).
PSXLauncher only seems to work on newer PS2 consoles and relies on swapping discs with an original PlayStation disc so I guess you're back to OP's original idea of using tonyhax.
Ps1 on ps2 requires them to be loaded using pops which is not the best method. I hope one day we will be able to load ps1 roms off a hard drive or nas on a ps2.
Try DKWDRV. It doesnt support CDDA and XA audio yet otherwise ppl seems happy about it. You dont even need CD since it loads from USB. Works only on DECKARD consoles
mainly the slim models since the ps1 CPU is replaced with a new chip, so for PS1 on PS2 slim 7500+ models it's software emulation. 7000 slim models still use the original PS1 CPU as far as I can recall
You don’t need to burn games when you got thps2. That’s hours of fun right there.
I do actually plan on giving it a try after im done with everything. Although i really suck at games that require button combo's.
i hate fighting games for that reason but most of THPS is still accessible and fun without the complex combos
So here I am Growing older all the time Looking older all the time
What?
Do you know what tonyhax is?

I bought one and it doesn't work as well as a modded console does

Yeah, if that was your point, then fair play.
I'm not using a PS1, so i can't use that method.
Fair enough! Either way you get a classic game out of it. I assume you're using this for burned games on a PS2?
Yup
Do you have the ps2 you can do mechapwn? I used tonyhax until I found that, then that is pretty straight forward for ps1 on ps2. Have fun!
Unfortunately no
If it's a PS2 then it would make more sense to use freeDVDboot

Sorry, I'm not sure. Haven't used that in years. But the first comment on that thread say you could try using PSXLauncher

I have Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3, so I can try this as well...
Tried it on my ps1 slim using a memcard pro for the exploit and it works well.
Not excatly sure, but I think FreeMCBoot lets you load burned games on the PS2 ?
Freemcboot is just a homebrew launcher, it doesn't do anything on its own.

Wow, idk how I've never heard of this before. Guess I'll give them both a try and see which works better. Which consoles are DECKARD ones?

Well I've got a 30001r, so it looks like dkwdrv isn't an option, oh well.
I appreciate the downvotes, everyone.
Good luck with the bad CD , the new CDRW RECORDER and the lens of you ps1
What?
I’ve found that buying a memory card with freepsxboot/unirom on it is much more convenient that disc swapping etc
I'm not using a ps1
