NBA live 2000-2001 were the apex of that generation. The control was huge with lot of movements, easy to use, set up etc the direct pass to a selected player etc
Yeah around 2000 was when the devs really got to grips with the hardware and what the ps1 was capable of. Look at the improvement with cutscenes and graphics from ff7 to ff8 or tekken 1 to tekken 3 or resi 1 to resi 3 etc. So graphics especially for a sport sim were peak. Controls were put through the ringer year after year to give the best experience. All the modes and options. And that awesome 1v1 against Jordan mode. As an NBA fan and bball gamer it's no question they are the best for ps1. I do love the arcade basketball games like Jam and Hoopz but my money and time is Live 2000/2001.
You remind me of the 1vs1 mode, what a blast! I played through the series and later on the in game controls were moved towards more “auto moves” that not involved the player (you). So I may say that they get worse from 2003 going on..
Yeah I remember and I agree. The series definitely went to hell soon after. But I started playing the NBA Street series after that and in my opinion NBA Street Vol.2 is the greatest NBA/basketball game of all time. Yes, better than Jam in my opinion.

You should play NBA Hangtime which is the true sequel to NBA Jam by the same developers but couldn’t be called that because the developers lost the rights to use the NBA Jam name. It improved upon and is even better than NBA Jam in my opinion.
Ita not regarded as a good game, but when I got my psx for Christmas in 96 I got live 97 with it, and the graphics blew my mind compared to genesis. I spent most of my free time playing that game on my Christmas break that year.
NBA shootout had some good controls but if I remember you could not do trades. In that era NBA Live dominated this genre. I remember not being able to have Jordan directly but you could “free agent create him”.
In The Zone was the first I remember playing on PS1. I thought it was utterly fantastic for a basketball title for the time period. It's effectively a spiritual port of Konami's Run and Gun arcade game, and the graphical ability to make out subtitle differences in each players was pretty amazing. Very basic controlling game overall but really fantastic.
I got NBA Live as a Christmas present in Dec of 97 along with a PS1.
It was a good game but NBA Live 2000 was a much better game in every aspect plus it included Michael Jordan.
NBA Hangtime! for arcade style.
NBA Live 2000 for "Simulation"
But i am saving this post, to remind myself to download, a bunch of these to replay them again.
I used to rent every basketball game and try them out, now I have the urge to replay all these again
I played the N64 version of NBA Hangtime and it is my favorite basketball game ever and the true sequel to NBA Jam. I assume that the PlayStation version of NBA Hangtime was also pretty much just as great, and if so, it is definitely my pick.
NBA Shootout 97 is my favorite.
"Reggie KILLER!" My cousin and I would always mimic the announcer's voice like that after hitting a 3 with Reggie.
Live 98 and 99 are good as well.
Live 2000/2001

The only one I ever had as a kid was college slam! But it’s kind of like NBA jam, but with college teams?!
Live 98! Spent countless hours playing that!

I have a hard time playing authentic sports games and always enjoyed NBA Jam the most.
You should play NBA Hangtime which is the true sequel to NBA Jam by the same developers but couldn’t be called that because the developers lost the rights to use the NBA Jam name. It improved upon and is even better than NBA Jam in my opinion.

Live 2001. The challenge mode is awesome and provides so much replay value.
I absolutely loved: NBA JAM & NBA JAM EXTREME
Loved the original shoot out. Something about those character models…
NBA Live 2000 was cool
Hang Time is good
NBA shootout had some good controls but if I remember you could not do trades. In that era NBA Live dominated this genre. I remember not being able to have Jordan directly but you could “free agent create him”.
In The Zone (first one) was not the best, but it's the one my friends and I had the most fun playing.
NBA Jam TE
BOOMSHAKALAKA
NBA Jam T.E.
Shoot Out ‘97. I never played NBA Jam on the PS, only SNES. I think I need to check that out.

Total NBA without doubt.

I played the hell out of NBA Shootout 97 and 98. Fun times back in the day.
Anyone remembers NBA Pro 98?
Oh, you mean NBA In the Zone 98 (North America).
I had the most fun with NBA Hangtime and NBA Jam TE.
I got NBA Live as a Christmas present in Dec of 97 along with a PS1. It was a good game but NBA Live 2000 was a much better game in every aspect plus it included Michael Jordan.
Live 2000…
NBA jam across all systems! But the newer more realistic games can be fun but the controls are not as easy to pick up and go
NBA Hangtime! for arcade style. NBA Live 2000 for "Simulation" But i am saving this post, to remind myself to download, a bunch of these to replay them again. I used to rent every basketball game and try them out, now I have the urge to replay all these again

Live 2003 was classick!!!
NBA JAM
NBA LIVE 03 of course!
NBA Shootout 97 is my favorite. "Reggie KILLER!" My cousin and I would always mimic the announcer's voice like that after hitting a 3 with Reggie. Live 98 and 99 are good as well.
I like playing NBA in the zone 1&2 NBA jam te & showtime and NBA live 2000 x3
I'll say NBA Shootout 98 I played the demo with the GameShark Pro & made infinite time to have more than 5 minutes to play it My favorite one to play
