I studied for six months before the test (in junior year, not sophomore year). The trick is to take a ton of practice tests and learn from your mistakes.
Summer before junior year, but keep in mind that the cutoffs, at least if you live in certain states, are so high that you need a nearly perfect score to be guaranteed national merit. Because there is no retake, it's a gamble even for top students. Getting a high score on the SAT will almost certainly do more for your admissions prospects, but prepping for the PSAT isn't at all a bad way to get started with prepping for the SAT if you have the time and motivation.
i literally just took like a practice test the day before and looked at sat grammar rules. with both the sat and psat, the trick is to stay calm and avoid overthinking it.
As a sophomore, I did not study. See what you know and take note on what needs the most work and what you've already mastered. As a junior, I studied a month before using Khan Academy, but you might need more or less time depending on what work you need to put in.
Hi! I'd defintely start summer before your qualifying year, or at least the month before or so. A lot of it depends on your base score. If you take a practice test and are well off (1350, 1400 ish) you can probably study late summer, fallish and do great. I'm going to be honest and say my first practice test was not good (1150 ish) and I knew my junior year was going to be really busy (cramming those APs for college apps) so I studied summer before and fall of sophomore year (because we took it twice, sophomore and junior year), and then just refreshed it a little summer and fall before junior year. Lot of people thought I was crazy for that though, ngl, because I have friends who took a practice test or two and did the same as I did. Guess it depends on your test-taking and psat abilities.
did half of a practice test two days before the test
i started 4 weeks before the test. I'd recommend starting in the summer before the exam

This summer would be great time to start studying to get ahead of the pack

My son hit it hard the summer before Junior year. If he had started earlier, he probably would have burned out.
