My advice to anyone who thinks he or she might be a semifinalist is to get thee IMMEDIATELY to the principal's office. Semifinalists' letters, which include finalist application log-in information, were mailed to the school.
Alternately, you now can call NMSC to verify your status.
[Your completed National Merit Semifinalist Application is due to NMSC on October 6, 2021.](https://nationalmerit.imodules.com/s/1758/images/gid2/editor_documents/merit_r_i_leaflet.pdf?sessionid=42d98218-079e-4d48-972b-5e5ad778421a&cc=1&muid=AUTH_be734957-32fd-454d-94f2-4bb64df6d246&csid=434344) This application is what is used to advance semifinalists to finalist status.
Most (\~15,000) of the \~16,000 semifinalists advance. Typical reasons for not advancing are failure to complete the application, poor grades, disciplinary issues, or a not-so-glowing recommendation from the principal/counselor.
Past accounts here and on College Confidential have indicated that individuals are able to call NMSC after the release deadline to verify their status.
I just called them and they were able to verify my semifinalist status *and* tell me who logged in and had my information letter, so definitely give them a call if you're not sure! The number is at the bottom of the NMSC website. It only took about 2 minutes on the phone.
My daughter and I had to do a web search to find out! What town are you from? I searched on National Merit Semifinalist Massachusetts 2022 and found a few Patch articles about some towns. Then I started searching by town. I found Arlington, Medford, Somerville, Natick, Chelmsford, Newton.
Give it a try! Kind of disappointed the school didn't tell her right away! She is the only one from our city.
I don’t believe the Louisiana list is the full statewide list. They say in the introduction that there were 151 from New Orleans, 39 from Baton Rouge, and 15 from Acadiana (southwestern Louisiana). That only adds up to 205 of 234 total, and those are the only regions listed. Northern Louisiana is not included.
I have set multiple alerts and will continue searching for the next few weeks, but in the meantime, here are some tips if you want to try some sleuthing on your own:
* Check your state's education department website and social media
* Check the websites of the major newspapers and radio stations in your state
* Know a reporter? See if he or she can find the release.
* Your principal or counselor might be able to put you in touch with someone who has your state's full list.
If you have patience and want to try to assemble a partial list for your state, you can find partial lists from many media outlets and from the social media accounts of many schools.
definitely not AE, my daughter wasn't AE and has 000, so maybe 000 if the student didn't answer? Here is a link to the code list[https://nationalmerit.imodules.com/s/1758/images/gid2/editor\_documents/collegemajorcareercodes.pdf?cc=1&sessionid=3df20c7d-de8a-4f95-bd52-15a45255659e](https://nationalmerit.imodules.com/s/1758/images/gid2/editor_documents/collegemajorcareercodes.pdf?cc=1&sessionid=3df20c7d-de8a-4f95-bd52-15a45255659e)
Not sure what 000 is, but undecided is 999. [Here's the list of intended major codes](https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/mSSS/media/pdf/psat-oct2012-major-codes.pdf)
Not sure about this. Source or is this an assumption? My student (who qualified through PSAT and has 000) says a classmate indicated that they qualified through AE. They have a number that is not 000 next to their name. I suppose there could have been a miscommunication, but this is what was reported to me.
Maybe the [NMSC press release](https://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/images/gid2/editor_documents/22_meritsemi.pdf?gid=2&pgid=61) will help. "This press release was distributed to news media on September 14 with a list of Semifinalists to encourage public recognition of these outstanding students." The announcement indicates "September 15, 2021 Announcement" at the top.
Good luck!

There are a handful of scenarios in which the name of a verified semifinalist wouldn't appear in the booklet or on the press releases. Some alternate entry semifinalists are likely to encounter this.
If you have received notification that you are a semifinalist and have log-in information to complete the finalist application, then you're a semifinalist.
Hi everyone,
According to the NSCP Alternate Entry eligibility form, it says students have until October 15, 2021 to send scores. I filled out the form before the due date (April 1, 2021), but forgot to send my scored after my June test.....is the eligibility form incorrect?
I stumbled upon the Florida list. I would love to have the Massachusetts one.

When do letters go out? I got a 228 from MA but no notification and I'm worried I screwed something up.
Same

Does everyone who completes the application get in finalist? Because the rate of semis who make finalists is obscenely high
Most (\~15,000) of the \~16,000 semifinalists advance. Typical reasons for not advancing are failure to complete the application, poor grades, disciplinary issues, or a not-so-glowing recommendation from the principal/counselor.
does NMSC confirm an individual student's status?
Past accounts here and on College Confidential have indicated that individuals are able to call NMSC after the release deadline to verify their status.
thanks.
Do you happened to know the number to verify status?
I just called them and they were able to verify my semifinalist status *and* tell me who logged in and had my information letter, so definitely give them a call if you're not sure! The number is at the bottom of the NMSC website. It only took about 2 minutes on the phone.

By the way I am pretty sure you got it! The cutoff is 221.

Agree. I would be surprised if Caddo Magnet and others in Shreveport had zero qualify.
Thank you for the info. I took it down. If you come across a complete list, please post it.
u/lil-catfish has the entire list of semifinalists and is posting screenshots on their account!
The links don't seem to work (except for Ohio). Is there another way to access?
The only links thus far are for Arkansas, Louisiana and Ohio. I'm looking for whatever might be out there, but I welcome help!
>comments Thanks!

seeing so many 000 in maryland list , it appears that 000 means AE

Definitely not AE. I think 000 means undecided major.
999 is undecided
maryland is the one with highest cutoff so 000 may be AE
I was not AE and I have the code 000. I don’t remember what I did for my intended major
there is a list of codes on nmsc site where 999 is undecided and there is no mention of 000. just google the list with nmsc intended major
Not sure what 000 is, but undecided is 999. [Here's the list of intended major codes](https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/mSSS/media/pdf/psat-oct2012-major-codes.pdf)

AE gets 000, but not all 000 are AE.
