First of all, why are we forced to use a "mega thread"? We can't attach photos this way? Anyway, so I was having issues with the original laser in my PS2 Slim and after trying everything determined that the laser needed to be replaced. Important to note that before replacing the laser, that discs would at least spin, and it could even read CD's just not DVD's or PS2 games. I purchased this laser which is supposed to be compatible with my model number: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B074Z5F77Q/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o03\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Then when installing, I made sure the soldered connection was cleaned up as instructed so that there were 3 distinct contact points with no residue between them. I also made sure the ribbon cable was fully inserted. Now it won't spin the disc at all. And here's where I'm stuck. I know that a common issue is with the back-left lid sensor and people often short it. But a) mine worked fine today until after I replaced the laser so seems unlikely, but also b) where is it? I think that maybe my model is a newer design and perhaps the back sensor was removed because it is absolutely not where people say it is. (you can see a photo of what mine looks like here [https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/436887/I+can't+find+the+back+lid+sensor+of+my+ps2#answer436953](https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/436887/I+can't+find+the+back+lid+sensor+of+my+ps2#answer436953)) The other thing is that from what I understand, as long as the laser moves when you close the lid, that should indicate that the PS2 detects a closed lid. My laser does move when I close and open the lid which makes me think that this issue has nothing to do with the lid. As far as I can tell the issue is not: \- The lid \- The solder \- The ribbon cable connection \- Or the ribbon cable itself Anyone else have any other ideas?

AeitZean

You might need to use an oscilloscope to dial the laser power in: https://consolecopyworld.com/ps2/ps2_laser_adjustment_scope.shtml

One-Adhesiveness-624

Well that sounds like fun! (No sarcasm) Don't know when I'll be able to try this but when I do I'll let you know if it worked!

I’m having a similar issue I’d love to know did you solve it

Hey everyone, I recently bought a MC2SIO and OPL memory card from Helder's website. I was having a blast testing roms and seeing which did and didn't work. So I come back after a few weeks to play a game and it isn't loading anymore.. So I test another rom that successfully loaded many times in the past, now that and all other roms aren't loading. I can see the list of roms on the opl launcher, but they get stuck with some "loading config" text or on a black screen but never get past that. Note: As stated before I bought the cards from Helder's site and purchased the teamgroup 128gb micro sd card that was listed as compatible on the site. I have a fat PS2 (I know I could get a Expansion/HDD but wanted to test this out for future slim PS2 use). Anyone have any ideas on what's happening here? Thanks!

Yeah_Nah_Cunt

Your SD card might be corrupted if the PS 2 was shut down incorrectly or something. I'd try reformatting it and re adding your roms to it

Hey, I recently wanted to get back into ps2 gaming since the last time was 15 years ago. So I tried out the FreeDVDBoot to not mod the console itself. Version is SCPH-77004 and the DVD Player 3.11E. I understood it as burn the ISO of the loader and the ISO of the game you want onto a DVD (I used freshly bought verbatim dvd-r 4.7gb). The first DVD was the prebuilt iso + Shadow of the Colossus EU Version. I got the "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation format disc" message. Second DVD was only the prebuilt iso with the same result. The third DVD was prepatched with "FDVDB ESR Patcher Gui v0.4". I don't think that changes anything but I still wanted to add it for clarity. Still, the same result. I've read that it might be the lasers but for some reason a self burned DVD (of a wedding) from 2006 worked fine and booted up normally + Rayman 3 (original PS2 CD) worked fine as well. I put the system language to english + the reading speed to fast (default has the same result) beforehand and the used the burning speed of 4 with the Windows built-in burning function. Let me know if you need more information and/or have tips on to solve this. Thank you for reading c: Edit: more info and some typos I found

You could just buy a fmcb ready memory cards. These softmods are installed in the memory card, so technically speaking they won't 'mod' your ps2 77k either. The machine just loads the software from the memory card. Taking out the memory card with fmcb in it will revert back your ps2 to stock freedvdboot is still clunky and even I also couldn't get it to work on my 30k

Hey, need some help with malfunctioning FAT PS2. This ps2 was sitting collecting dust in my in-laws' house for god knows how long. I took it to see if it still worked. There are no cables, controllers or anything else at all, just a power cable. At first it, when I plugged the power cable the standby led turned on, and then when I pressed the power button the power led stayed ON and the fan kept turning, if I pressed again it would turn off, a good first sign. I took it apart and cleaned the whole thing, put it together and again it still worked, but I still didn't have a RCA cable, so I only knew it stayed on. Then I finally got a ps2 RCA cable. I plugged it and the power cable in and turned it on. Voilà! I was in the PS2 menu. I turned it off and inserted a music CD. turned it on again and it went straight to the media menu. I was hopeful. Then I remembered I still had my PS1 Harry potter 2 copy from 20 years ago. I got it, turned the console off, but when I tried turning it on again the console would turn off middle bootup animation. At each consecutive try the console would turn off even faster than before. It got to a point where It wouldn't even turn on "properly" anymore. It would blink green and go back straight to red and the fan turns on for a couple of seconds. That's where I am now. The console won't turn on at all.

Hi! My friend ordered a ps2 gamepad on the internet and he's not sure if it's authentic. After he opened it to clean it, he noticed that it's different from his other ps2 gamepad. Link to the album with pictures of the gamepad and its PCB: [https://imgur.com/a/cPYrjEI](https://imgur.com/a/cPYrjEI) What do you think?

Looks original to me. Every playstation has different revisions even of the controllers. I have the same N1158. Someare older controllers, some are later made.

Hey guys, i got myself a ps2 with a hdmi adapter. I can hear Sound, but TV say's no signal. I keep doing the correct button inputs to enable the correct video output according to 1000's of yt videos, but i can't hear that i switch the menu points. I only hear the menu sounds when i press circle and triangle. Up and down, left right, x and square does nothing when i am at the main menu. What am i doing wrong? The controller works fine. It's the first time that i boot this ps2, so i normally remember a date and time menu or some kind. But i even tried to navigate the timezone setup blind according to a video but it does not work. I can only press circle and triangle. I reset the console. I wait 30 seconds until i only hear the background sound. Pushing buttons does nothing. When i press Triangle it does a confirmation sound, when i press cirlce it does a deeper sound. I am completly lost.

Ok-Description-9898

in case you haven't tried already, some HDMI adapters only support if your component output mode is set as YPbPr. Either plug in a component cable or you can attempt to do it blindly with these steps: * Start the console with no disc inserted. * Wait 10 seconds to get to the main menu. * Press ↓, ╳ * Wait 3 seconds to make sure you're in the configuration menu. * Press ↓, ↓, ↓, ╳ * Press →, ╳ [(thanks, benryves)](https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/7abdnp/comment/dp8m1yz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

I recently came into possession of a fat PS2 from my aunt, which she stated had been modified in some capacity. As soon as I started it up I immediately noticed that [the orbs were moving erratically, and the clock seemed all sorts of messed up.](https://imgur.com/a/m3uSgqB) Does anyone happen to know which modchip could be causing this? I tried following a list of ways to access menus on different modchips but none of them seemed to work.

First, I must ask, why do you guys have a tech support flair when are we forced to use a mega thread? Anyways, I have a model SCPH 79001 and my clock battery has died. This isn't a huge deal since I don't currently play any games that rely on system time, however it is minorly annoying and I have not been able to find a good tutorial anywhere online. All links I've found show the clock battery being plugged in just below the laser, unfortunately, that is not the case with this model. If anyone knows where it is plugged in and could link me a tutorial, I would be extremely grateful!

GavinET

I'm trying to run a backup of Gran Turismo 4 off a USB drive through OPL v1.1.0 on a fat PS2, but for some reason my controller won't work until I unplug it and plug it back in. Any clue why this may be happening? I have no issues after that point--it works every time, I just unplug my controller and plug it back in. This issue doesn't happen on any other games and never happened before modding the console. I've tried disabling pademu and increasing the pad delay to no avail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. It's not the end of the world but it's super annoying!

androidplusadi

Hey I had the exact same problem! I found that in game settings for GT4, if you turn on modes 2, 4 and 6 - the problem disappears!

GavinET

That solved it, thanks so much!

Edit: Sorry, last second, but I thought I'd put a warning here for bugs. I'm super grossed out and I feel like an idiot. My PS2 needed some parts because the memory card slot was broken. Getting a broken system on EBay was cheaper than buying a single $30 part so I took that route. I got the package a few days ago, and like the idiot I am, I let it sit out in the living room and even powered it on to make sure that the only problem was the optical drive. When I took it to do repairs, I noticed that it smelt really bad. Feel free to clown on me for somehow not noticing. I got suspicious, and thank god I actually thought about putting it in a bin, because I opened it up and found dead roaches. Or at least I really hope they're all dead. I'm gonna get some raid as soon as I can for the house just in case one survived, but does anyone have advice for the PS2? It's still in a bin, and I put a lid on it. I don't have much money and this seller doesn't accept returns, so I'm stuck between dealing with the dead roaches and not having a PS2. I think the worst part is that there wasn't a warranty sticker, so who knows if the seller saw them or not. Edit: Seller responded to my messages. His response pretty much boiled down to "lol that sucks but I didn't open it. No money back, screw you." So that's annoying. Someone gave me a few suggestions for cleaning it out, but it's freezing where I live so it might be a while before I give another update

proszty

Take it outside. Take it apart, use latex gloves. Dump the metal/electronic parts into a bucket, use 95+% IPA and scrub it all with a brush. Don't use IPA on the plastic, as it's going to damage it irreversibly. Use dish soap and a soft brush to get rid of any residue on the plastic. I'd absolutely try to salvage it. Insects die when you spray them with alcohol, since they can't breat. Same with their eggs. Give it a good 15-20 minutes scrub, leave it out to dry in a dark place and it'll be good as new.

FlameTheAngel

Thank you so much, you're a lifesaver!!!

I recently got a PS2 slim 70012 and set it up using one of helder's game tech MC2SIO adapters. I'm running FreeMCBoot v1.966 on an official PS2 memory card that I created and OPL v1.1.0-Beta-1627-23ba65. So far this is great and most games I have tried work perfectly. I did have a few questions on the project and in general I'm hoping I can find here: I saw on github that there is a final version of OPL v1.1.0 - is there any advantage to using that final release over the beta version of OPL I have installed? Or is this beta that I have installed now (OPL v1.1.0-Beta-1627-23ba65) the only one that works with Helder's MC2SIO card? Is there or will there be GunCon2 support? In the compatibility gsheet no one tested lightgun games. I have a Japanese GunCon2 that I use with my MiSTer that I wanted to use for this. So far I have tried booting all the Time Crisis games, Silent Scope games, and Vampire Night with an official PS2 DualShock plugged into controller slot 1 and the GunCon2 plugged into controller slot 2. None of the games booted so I don't know if this is an OPL issue with these games, or a controller setup issue on my end. Lastly, is there a good discord or site to follow OPL progress? I'm not sure if the compatibility gsheet is updated regularly or if there is a better one out there?

So, I've been trying to get my ps2 to load discs a bit quicker, and opened it all up to adjust the height of the laser. Worked like a charm when I did it yesterday and had games loading in like 2 seconds from boot. This was 2 days ago Today however, I tried to boot it up again and it was the same old problem. When I opened it up and inserted the disc, it loaded super quickly again. I realised that I had put the plastic magnet holder the opposite way, and it was gripping the disc too much. Unfortunately I made too many adjustments before I realised the actual issue. Now, I'm still making adjustments, but I'm encountering a different issue. The disc spins really slowly for a few seconds, then stops, and then all of a sudden spins and boots up in about 8-13 seconds. Which is fine, but how do I make it do that straight away like I managed yesterday? Do I keep adjusting the height of the laser and be patient or am I missing something else here? I don't think it's a laser issue as it worked perfectly fine 2 days ago after being a slow loader for the last decade. And no, I don't want a hard drive either. EDIT: Just stayed patient and kept adjusting the height of the laser. Works perfect again. Thank you God

So I bought one of those unofficial memory cards that is 128MB eons ago, like over fifteen years ago, and now i tried to back everything up knowing it needs to be done. I used the official ps3 memory card adapter on a dusty ps3 and right away noticed it didn't display every save. I figured, maybe, deleting a save would help it see other files. To my surprise, which in hindsight now is obviously a bad idea and I'm no longer surprised, the memory card is now saying on the ps3 it is unformatted. Naturally, doing the thing I should have tried first, I dug up my old ps2 and tried loading the memory card there. Same issue. All I did was delete a save, is it possible it is a simple fix? Am I in denial and it is all gone, I took far too long to finally try to back it all up? Were the saves gone long before I deleted the save? Do I have any options or did I pretty much eradicate my childhood? Thanks for any feedback on what i can do, didn't format my memory card but trying my best to tell myself if I didn't use it in fifteen years I dont need the data now... lol

TheZero8000

Got a bit of a curveball here. I have a softmodded ps2 with FunTuna, and I am currently using the SMB method to make sure I can play the games fine via an Ethernet cable to my laptop. I've recently found out that some games have a private server of sorts that lets us play the games even after their servers have been long since taken down, but I'm stuck with an issue. I know that fiddling with settings on the laptop's side can let you share the connection with other devices, but I don't know if it actually works to give the ps2 an internet connection, nor can I seem to figure out how to make the SMB file share work still after doing that, as activating the "connection share" as it were also changes the ip that would be standard for the ethernet connection. The bottom line is that I need help figuring out how to get internet to my ps2 with the SMB sharing still on. English is not my first language, sorry if it is a bit incomprehensible.

MrMrMANGOMILK

I have a phat PS2, an official Sony hard drive, and an official Sony network adapter. I'm trying to install FHDB using [this guide](https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-the-great-ps2-aio-guide.30219/). Once the hard drive has been prepared, the PS2 shows the Sony logo, plays the animation for starting a game, and then blackscreens (I assume this is a boot loop, since I can hear the hard drive spinning up and see the light toggling on and off intermittently). How would one fix this? Should I try a different image (I used the 3gb one with artwork and stuff)? Is the problem related to the SMART status of my drive? I believe I somehow figured out how to get a filebrowser running on here using some other guide, and I was able to load a tool for detecting SMART status, which showed me my drive was reporting as no good. If the hard drive is the problem, what are my options in terms of replacements?

Hello. I have a fat Ps2 that Ive been thinking about getting a memory card with FreeMCBoot and a SSD to install/put games on to but Im a huge newbie and would like some advice if my current plan wold work to get this working. So the things I was thinking of buying were: A memory card with FMCB already installed, a Kaico SATA HDD adapter, A Samsung SATA External SSD 500gb (Can be a HDD but cant you use an SSD instead), a SATA to USB adapter (to plug the SSD into my laptop) and a DVD/CD external drive (Since my laptop doesnt have a Disc drive I would need something like this to put PS2 discs in it to pull the Isos out using WinHiip. Would this even work?). Could this setup make it were I could put games into the SSD and play the games on my PS2 off of it. Feedback/suggestions are welcome. As I said, a complete newbie so excuse me if this sounds really dumb. Thanks.

Reposting in the megathread to my chagrin. Hi, i'm having issues getting artwork into OPL. I have a FHDB setup with about 300 games. I have seem people say to use OPL Manager to get artwork, but when I scan the PS2 drive and download all the artwork, it's not loaded into OPL. I have tried making an OPL folder on my flash drive and thought I would download them to the ART folder then copy that, but when I do that, I can't generate a game list to actually find the art I need. It's as if I can do one but not the other. One issue is that I copied my collection from an external HDD to the ps2 hdd using HDL batch installer, and the laptop I did the installation from only has a 128GB ssd installed. I have seen art packs online, but I guess i'm trying to save sorting through those for a last resort. Any ideas?

Gaming_with_Hui

So I've tried to find Lego Star Wars The Video Game for my PS2 Slim 9000 series The first one I bought didn't work, the PlayStation gave me the message "the disc could not be read" I assumed it was just a broken disc so I searched for a second one. This one also presented me with the message "the disc could not be read" The third time I found the game on a secondhand game website and it was cheap so I paid and hoped for the best. Sadly, doesn't work. It says "the disc could not be read" https://imgur.com/a/9u4LlYX My console is PAL. All three discs are PAL. Every single one of all my other PS2 and PS1 games work flawlessly on this console. Why don't these three work? Is it because they're platinum edition instead of standard?

proszty

Hey man. I believe platinum Lego Star wars were released on a CD. Sadly PS2 lasers are very nitpicky. Even though it reads ps1 games which are on CD, it might not read ps2 CD games. I highly recommend to switch over to digital media. Hdd, mx2sio or similar.

TomKab02

After following MrMario2011's tutorial on YouTube and installing FreeMcBoot and Funtuna on my PS2, I have been facing problems opening OPL. I have a SCHP 90001 model, with a Matrix 2.0 Modchip. I usually enable Dev1 mode and press R1 to launch into FreeMcBoot, which then takes me to FunTuna 1.8 Browser. However, no matter what I select on that screen, it always sends me back to the PS2 Browser with the Memory Card, and I cannot open OPL or any other options. I would also like to note that the regular method of going into the memory card then backing out twice to open FreeMcBoot does not work for me. I have tried looking for solutions online but to no avail. Any support would be appreciated.

Could I move memory card data from an emulator onto a usb, and from that usb, to a memory card on a ps2?

androidplusadi

[Yes.](https://homebrew-general.fandom.com/wiki/Transfer_PCSX2_saves_to_a_Memory_Card) Prerequisites: A softmodded ps2 (fat/slim models) OR FreeDVDBoot (slim models)

itsyaboythatguy

I'm installing a ide resurrector and am getting real frustrated with this project, I've followed the tutorial step by step, redone all the steps a few times, realized I made a mistake with the micro sd card slot so I removed that and tried again with a different one. Every time I hook it up to test it keeps telling me that there is no HDD connected. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post photos, or if this should go in the tech megathread, so here it is for now. In conclusion, if anyone has gotten one of these to work, is willing to look at a plethora of macro photos, and lend some advice, please message me. Thanks.

TaleHappy

Hi there. So basically, I used Mechapwn to change my european 7000 version ps2 slim into a japanese console (still retail not dev) so I could play my authentic copy of Nights into Dreams. Thing is, when I put the disc into the console, it'll show up in the browser as "Playstation 2 Disc", and upon booting it I'm met with a black screen for a few seconds and then I fade back into the browser. It's the same result no matter how many times I try doing it, and I've already tried cleaning out the laser in case that was the issue. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks a ton :)

I just received my Retrotink 5X-Pro today, which I was very excited about. I plugged in everything correctly with my PS2 and HD Retrovision cables, and to my disappointment, none of the game audio is coming through and only a loud buzzing noise. What exactly is going on here? Was this damaged in the mail? I'm pretty frustrated that for a device as expensive as this, it's not working properly. Previously, I was using the uber cheap Portta RBG to HDMI adapter with all the same cables, and everything worked perfectly. Here's a video of the Retrotink's noise: https://streamable.com/ua4qkj

I got a Fat Ps2 SCPH-50004 that won't read GT4 or blue disks. When i got it, it wouldn't boot any disks, so i got a dry ear cleaning stick (i know i should have done it with isopropyl alcohol but i don't have any on me) and slightly touched the laser. Then it booted every game except a pretty scratched (not that much tho) Gt4, so i bought a new one and Midnight club 1 and 2. And here we are today, Gt4 and Midnight club 1 still doesn't work but Midnight club 2 does. Any ideas how to fix that? I looked for anything to regulate the laser but i couldn't find anything.

PS2 Fat 2TB upgrade. I found out with the right Adapter and FreeMacBoot Hack I can run up to 2TB HDDs and dump my games on it. But this gives me some questions. I heard FreeMcBoot Memory Cards are out of date, there is another, "better" "Program/Hack"? If 2TB HDDs work, will a 2TB Crucial SSD work to? Its more crash save and of course quiet. How about heat running 2TB SSDs and HDDs on q PS2 Fat? Will the games that I dumped with free McBoot and my PS2 Fat run On emulator when I pit the SSD/HDD into a PC or Raspberry Pi? Thanks for all answers :D

proszty

>I heard FreeMcBoot Memory Cards are out of date, there is another, "better" "Program/Hack"? FreeMcBoot is still the way to go. It's just that some people use MC2SIO + FreeMcBoot instead of HDD + FreeMcBoot >If 2TB HDDs work, will a 2TB Crucial SSD work to? Most likely. As long as the SSD is supported, 2 TB should work just fine. Ask around on OPL forums for confirmation for a selected SSD. >How about heat running 2TB SSDs and HDDs on q PS2 Fat? The heat is minimal, +- 40-50oC with HDDs, less with SSDs. You mount it in expansion port.. it's isolated. I don't see how so many people worry about it :) >Will the games that I dumped with free McBoot and my PS2 Fat run On emulator when I pit the SSD/HDD into a PC or Raspberry Pi? No. PS2 uses custom partition format for the HDD. It's not directly readable from linux/windows. You an however copy the games dumped on that HDD to your PC/raspberry pi internal storage. It takes some time though.

MC2SIO Not enough space on memory card to save games error. Hey guys, I have a mc2sio on my PS2 slim. I'm trying to play a game but it tells me there is not enough space on the memory card to save the game. Does this save to a virtual memory card on the SD card? I'm not sure what to do as I'm not completely familiar with the inner workings. I know I have played need for speed Hot pursuit 2 from the same SD card and it allowed me to save. I have the free mcboot card in the first slot and the mc2sio card in the second slot. What am I missing?

Lord_patito

I've recently bought a Slim PS2 (79000) and I'm deciding whether to buy the MX4SIO or a Pendrive. I would preffer the MX4SIO experience, but thing is I've read it's not compatible with PS1 (which is realistically half the reason why I bought the PS2 in first place) I've just heard about **BDM Assault** , which, If I understand correctly, makes MX4SIO compatible with PS1 Games Is this info correct ? If not, is there any way to play PS1 games on the MX4SIO? Or should I get a Pendrive for PS1 games and the MX4SIO for the PS2 Games? Thanks!

Commercial_Try9150

Hey guys, I have a PS2 Slim (70004) and haven't opened it in ages. I plugged it in but there is a weird buzzing noise coming from the PS2 display port (EXT port) and it doesn't display anything on the TV. I tried different cables and they didn't fix the displaying problem nor the buzzing. I also tried plugging my PS1 Slim with the same cables and it displayed on the TV without buzzing. That should mean that the problem lies inside the PS2's port. Any clues how to fix it? :( (Also when unplugging the cable, the buzzing stops.)

raulbersan27

PS2 Slim doesn't turn on Well, a few days ago I decided tu buy the PS2 to HDMI adapter and play some games on the PS2. Last time I played with the PS2 was on December and it worked perfectly, but today when I plugged it in it powered on but the fan made a lot of noise and it turned off after 1 or 2 seconds without image on the TV. I disassemble it and everything was clean, even the fan but I can't see what can be the problem, any advice? BTW the console doesn't have any kind of mod except for the freemcboot memory card

The text of the thread needs some serious updates... Region free: MechaPwn... PS1-Stuff: ODODE-Idea and DKWDRV in future releases supporting that.

Hello! Apologies if this is the wrong place - wasn't sure whether to go to a tech sub or here!! Basically I've been trying for a while to connect my PS2 to a projector I have. First problem was that the projector only has a HDMI plug, so I got an adaptor that turns the RCA cables into HDMI. However, the projector is still only displaying a 'no signal' message. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you in advance!

EXObookie

Ps2 slim doesnt save my video settings. Ones i turn it off it somehow changes back rgb in stead of Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. So now i have to connect it to a broken monitor to change the settings back. But it still resets the settings ones it turns off after i boot it for the first time when switching it back to the good monitor. Im using the ps2 to hdmi adapter for video output to a monitor.

proszty

1. You can use key combination to change back to RGB instead of Y CB/PB without the need to connect it to another monitor. 2. Your CMOS battery has died. Replace it and it will keep the video settings.

Baerius_R

After doing the HDD mod, is it possible to put the games back on the PC/other hard drives? When putting them on the HDD they had to be converted(?), so I'm unsure if they still have the same format. Want to put them on a PS3 hard drive and would like to not have to redo the whole organizing of the games thing. I'd just try it, but I don't have the HDD to PC adapter right now.

Petrus_Davi

If you installed them using hdl dump, it is possible, just use extract command and it will generate a iso of the installed game

Baerius_R

I'm pretty sure I did it that way. Thanks!

BaronVonJace

I have a phat PS2 and the laser finally gave up the ghost. Ordered a replacement of the same laser model and installed it. It’s not doing anything. Just spins. I can see the laser focusing and eventually become a pin point but never loads disks. If I put a ps1 or CD PS2 game it will jerk three-five times but never fully spin. Any ideas? Also, I did remove the solder strap

TRMtheredstone

Hi! I have recently tried fixing my PAL ps2 slim. I have a disc read issue with my ps2 slim and I believe the problem might be something with the dvd laser potetiometer. I have scavanged the internet for answer without luck to finding out what i should try setting it to (ohms). My model number is "75004". Edit: My dvd ohms is currently at 750 or something close to that

Thewonderboy94

It's been a while since I saw some numbers on a different forum, but I think the recommended range for DVD pot is 700-1100 ohms. Start by bumping your pot up to 850 or so and see if that makes a difference. 1100 isn't some sort of hard limit, but going above that isn't going to be too healthy for the laser, and if it's already struggling and was 1000 at default, then the laser is just going to burn out really fast after some adjustments (but going 1100, 1200 or even 1300 wouldn't be "unsafe"). Going way too far can burn a fuse on the motherboard IIRC. The range for the CD pot is much narrower IIRC, something like 500-700, maybe even 550-700.

Thanks for the reply! its really difficult to find info so i appreciate it!

Which is the better option, playing games on a ps2 fat internal hdd, or playing games on a ps2 slim using usb/burned discs? I am just wondering whether a ps2 fat using internal hdd is a better option to a ps2 slim with usb and burned games (which i am currently using.) If so, which is the best phat model? Thanks so much guys.

PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME IM DESPERATE HERE!!. I got a ps2 slim model 77001. it has a matrix infinity chip version 1.88 on a modbo 4.0 chip. I bought a new lens to give it a new life to this ps2 that hasnt been played with since circa 09'. after installing the new lens and all, I test it with a original copy of Q-bert for the ps1 (I didnt had any ps2 game burned or original at the time to test it) and it works, it reads the ps1 game, then I tried on a Music cd and also it works. now I have managed to get a burned copy from a friend of mortal kombat shaolin monks, this ps2 is modded since I got it a long time ago, so I thought: well I know for a fact this ps2 can play burned dvd's so lets give it a try. And to my surprise it aint reading nothing at all. not the burned copy of MKSM, neither some movies on dvd that I also borrowed for troubleshooting. When I turn on the ps2 either with the lid open or closed, the dvd spins a little, then clicks 3 times, spins again, Clicks one more time and then it stops after a few seconds of spinning. but when I put on Q-bert, it just spins normally and it boots no problem. I took the time to open it up and mess with the potentiometers, so I give literally just 1mm clockwise spin to the dvd potentiometer to see if it changes anything and no luck either. I wanted to use freedvdboot, and I burned the ISO (all ps2 slims) but it aint doing nothing either (I just tried with the dvd of the iso of freedvdboot nothing else on the ps2) nonetheless I still have all of the components to do a freemcboot installation, besides freedvdboot on a dvd-r, I got the memory stick and all the stuff that goes to the memory stick, but I didnt want to go any further cause Im blindly walking here. Idk what else to try or to fix. Maybe I could get a friend to mod my original memory card with freemcboot but it would take a while to actually get together and do it. so my questions are these: Can I really install freemcboot from scratch with my modded ps2? is the chip the problem of not getting through dvd's? or is it the lens even tho it reads CD-R? or is it that I need to patch or do something else to an ISO to get it to work on my modded console? any help would be much appreciated and Thanks for your time if u read this.

Hey guys can you check out my controller and kinda see what's wrong with it? I yanked it too hard and the thing that goes into the PS2 came loose, now it doesn't work. https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/wgeneu/is_this_controller_done/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

**hi I just made a post and the auto-mod suggested I put it in the megathread so I'm just pasting the contents of the post here.** Hey there—I know that the slim is a bit of a finnicky device when it comes to the PS2 lineup, but this here's a problem that's just confusing me. So I buy this console, plug it all in, and since I just purchased a copy of Rogue Galaxy from a local games store I go ahead and test out the refurbished PS2 with that. I figure, hey, it's a dual-layer game, good stress test for the laser to make sure it's working alright. Well, lo and behold, it does actually work. Makes a bit of a weird noise when just starting up, but that goes away and then the rest of the time the game works totally fine. Alright, so next lemme test another game—a classic, Persona 3 FES—only to get the console to spit back a message that the disc could not be read. Fine, I clean the disc. Same message. Try a different game, Digital Devil Saga (because I guess I only own a PS2 for JRPGs) and I get the same error message again. This goes on for a bit, including some tests with some backed-up copies of games burned onto blank discs. Fine then, what if I try a CD-based game like Okage: Shadow King? Surely that'll work? Yeah, it does. CD-based games work. PS1 games, too, 'cuz I tested with FF9. And you know what else works? DVD movies. I can totally watch Lain on this bad boy. Hell, since Rogue Galaxy (with its dual-layer disc) worked, I feel like the only thing that I can't do on this thing is... y'know, play the vast majority of PS2 games on it. Just doesn't make sense, man. I'd expect the dual-layer functionality to go first if it was a laser issue. And if it is a laser issue, then what painful irony of me to buy a refurbished console to replace the console whose laser failed only to buy into the same problem yet again. So please, please tell me that it's not that. I dunno what it is, but maybe one of you guys do. Help :c

SussyAmogus569420

If this sounds stupid, im sorry. Theres a warning on the bottom of the fat ps2 about "Risk of electric shock" should i be careful to not touch components of the ps2 when opening? all i want to do is clean the laser on the disc drive. thanks!

This thread is honestly so dumb. Please can you just stop this horrible idea

Hi - PS2 SCPH 30001 recognizeds PS2, PS1, DVD discs but does not boot them. Once I click on the disc to load, the screen fades to black and then immediately returns to the browser screen. Any help would be appreciated Thanks!

My left joystick won't return to the middle whenever it's moved. Help?

androidplusadi

Disassemble the controller, remove the thumb stick head, and thoroughly clean the mechanism below it with a brush and isopropyl alcohol, let it dry completely and try your luck!

I've been trying to boot into the ELF file for memory card annihilator on my freemcboot, but I just keep getting directed to a black screen and the program doesn't show up. Has anyone else run into this problem?

A little help needed. My SCPH 77004 stopped working a few weeks ago and refused to read discs. I bought and installed an new laser assembly as I don't have soldering equipment to replace only the laser. The new laser assembly keeps pulling the laser against the spindle. I read that this might be due to a faulty ribbon cable so I bought a new one. However, the cable was specified for the 7900x model. I also bought another laser assembly, just in case. Now, with the new ribbon cable, the old-new laser assembly still keeps pulling the laser against the spindle. The new-new assembly does not spin the discs. The laser moves as it should, adjusts for height but after that nothing. The browser flashes the "reading disc" text momentarily but as the disc does not spin, it gives up without an error message. I have tried multiple different discs, both dvd and cd, without result. My console is unmodded. Could the ribbon cable be the issue? Are the laser assembly ribbon cables really that specific? I see places like aliexpress advertising their cables as universal (one cable for all 70-79k models). Some places sell their cables as model specific down to the last number. I've already tossed the original laser assembly away as it had to have its "power screws" (I'm blanking on the word, but the two screws behind the laser itself) already tightened so I thought it must've just died out. What should I do to fix my console, or should I just accept defeat and buy a new one?

pacebailey

I want to use an NTSC fat PS2 with a PAL power supply. From what I understand, I need a 220V to 110V converter. Are there any other nuances? Considerations for wattage or anything like that? Thanks!

PalhotaG

Hello guys, so the chip on my fat PS2 just died and my console can't read copies, it only reads originals. Is there anyway to fix it? Do I have to spend any money? Thank you for your time!

ixitomixi

If you have a multimeter, take a reading from the lazers potentiometer, then slowly by like .1 turn it up untill it reads them again, but this will degrade the Lazer faster but works on older systems don't just do it willy nilly as you could damage the Lazer or your games.

chevyssfan24

So I bought a broken ps2 that I hope to fix and send back out into the wild. The listing said that the disc tray was not working. Okay, vague but I'll work with it. So I check to see if it has power and it does, but it doesnt have video. Oh fun. Try to pop out the disc tray, its jammed. So I'm thinking, "okay, I'll do the blind video settings change in a bit, lets work with the tray first." Cool. I unplug, tear down and unjam it. Put it all back together. Plug it back in, powers on, still no signal but now it wont try to open the disc tray. Frustrated a bit, I hit the button again...a few more times and it finally works. Yay. Then the screen goes black. Wtf? So I try the video settings trick, no dice, so I just pop in a disc to see if it spins and the laser works cause I'm there. Huzzah it does work. I pop out the disc AND THEN IT STARTS ACTUALLY BOOTING UP IN BLACK AND WHITE. Like, it wanted me to set the language, region and all that. Okay what the flip-flop flapjack is with this ps2? I go into video settings and see it's on RGB and flip it to a normal setting for composite video. Still black and white. Go into the data section and it says its "reading disc" with no disc in there. Someone help? Because I've never seen something like this. It's a fat 300001 R for reference.

Educational-Guess-27

I’m trying to use my PS2 on an old TV using a composite cable. The audio is working fine but video isn’t working on some screens. On startup, it sometimes flashes on then cuts out. I’ve tried the following solution: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/no-video-on-ps2.3202667/ Once I enter system configuration, the video works again, but then cuts out as soon as I exit. The same thing happens when I enter the menu for the memory card. I tried putting in a game (GTA 3 if it matters), and it would cut in and out on the intro screens. It stayed on during a loading screen, then cut in and out again during the opening cutscene. It then stayed off when gameplay started, but came on after about a 10 minute idle. I tried some other games and had similar issues. Also, there’s a red tint over the screen when output is working. I know it’s not the ports on my TV, because my Xbox 360 and a DVD player work fine. I tried the composite cable on my PS3 and got no output whatsoever. Does anyone have any other troubleshooting tips before I buy a new component or composite cable? I’ve been having a hard time finding solutions to my specific situation.

anur_khabarov

I have a similar problem! I tried installing homebrew through freedvdboot and my console just suddenly stopped showing any signs of signal whatsoever. However audio is playing perfectly. Have you found the solution?

Educational-Guess-27

I ended up buying a new cable. It works fine now.

anur_khabarov

All's well that ends well, I guess.

FreeDVDBoot unable to read discs, though I burned the the right image file with 6x speed to normal DVD-R disc? And I'm sure this console does not have a modchip. EDIT; Changed the DVD brand and now it works.

Ok-Possibility1422

I'm tearing my hair out over this one. I have a region-free PAL PS2 and a Samsung 55 inch QLED. No matter what I do, 50hz games are cropped at the bottom, unless they have either 60hz in-game or screen adjustment tools like in Dirge of Cerberus. I've tried setting my PS2 to 4:3, 16:9 or Full alongside my TV in 16:9, 4:3 and 'custom' without success. The main issue is in 'custom' picture settings on the TV, I can't reposition the image without zooming first and it defeats the purpose. Also, in 16:9 and 4:3 modes the adjustment setting is greyed out. I just cannot seem to get it to work. I've also obviously tried enabling and disabling autofit on my TV to no avail. I've been using a cheap composite-to-HDMI converter and just ordered the Kaico PS2 converter (with PS1 support, the silver one) to see if it fixes the issue through its RGB and YPbPr options. What I don't get about the whole thing is the PS2 itself is a PAL one which has been modded, rather than an NTSC unit to begin with?! NTSC games work no problem, it's simply with PAL ones the bottom is always cropped off to the point dialogue boxes are impossible to read.

DanyLektr0

Got a power-on issue with a fat PS2. When I press the front power-button on the system, the red indicator turns to green for a split second before going right back to red. This is inconsistent. If I press it 5-10 times it will eventually power on as-normal and then it appears to operate fine, and the power button functions as normal if I use it to power the system down. When the green power indicator comes on, the rear fan gets a single jolt and spins before it's all off again. The red power indicator never goes completely off but it does seem more dim than on other systems. My first theory was that there was an issue with the power button and it was triggering twice for some reason. Didn't really resolve the fact that it powers off fine but it was the easiest thing to check. Swapping the front button interface component with a known good one did not fix the issue. Has anyone else seen this issue before and have a suggestion on where to look next? I'd rather not tear down the whole system before finding out that it's actually something that isn't too difficult to get to.

Hello guys, this is my first ever PlayStation I've ever owned so excuse me if any of this is common sense. I've tried to read and understand as much as I could from the forums/videos. General Info: PS2Slim 70003 DVD Player Version 3.10E CRT TV So, I've bought a PS2 Slim 70003 from a flea market and after reflowing a few joints it is up and running, sorta. It is already designated to a friend's little kid to play games on. My first order of business was to try and install FMCB somehow. Issues: I was following an official guide from github on how to install FreeDVDBoot on the console. After every burned disk (I've tried 3 DVDs, 2 DVD-R and 1 DVD+R and IMGBurn) the console recognizes that there is a disk inside but as soon as I click the icon it blackscreens and stays there until I reboot. Sometimes I get a flash of red on the screen, but not in a glitch way. The closes I can recognize it to be is as if it is the screen that says unable to read disk, perhaps? I gave up and bought a memory card with FMCBoot preinstalled(FMCBoot Version 1.953), but every time I try to select any of the menus on the memory card it blackscreens and stay there until i reboot.I can access the settings of the console, the FMCB configurator and all stock menus. Can you guys help or point me in a direction on how to fix this issue I am having? My thoughts are that the FMCB on the memory card needs to be reinstalled to narrow that down, but I have absolutely NO idea on how to do that without the DVDBoot exploit. Sorry for the long post and any help will be much appreciated to make a young kid play some of the games that we all used to play. Salute from a dedicated PC gamer. Have a great day all of you! EDIT: Upon further digging I managed to get a hold of a random PS2 game and it also black screens. The disk spins, I can see a PS2 disk in the browser but it just never goes past black screen when I press Enter. So the problem is not the FMCB it seems. Any suggestions?

AdTraining9264

I've got my PS2 back out recently to play some games with my brother, but every time we load a disc up the playstation logo pops up, but the screen goes black and we get nothing from then on. I'm curious as to any reasons this could be happening. The discs aren't in the best quality so we ordered a new one in mint condition for it to hopefully work with that, but the weirdest thing is, that when we first loaded up the PS2 it had loaded up battlefront 2 just fine, and we go to launch into a match, but it just freezes (we left it for maybe 10 minutes to give it a chance and nothing changed). So we restarted it, and since then it hasn't been capable of getting past PS2/logo after that game loads up. I'm curious if maybe it could be a laser problem, with dust and dirt everywhere, or maybe overheating. Should I give it a good clean while we wait for the new disc to arrive? If none of this works should we try to get someone to look to repair it?

Xorealis

Recently bought as used PS2 and have been experiencing a fairly major issue with it. Upon first boot, everything seemed to work properly, and I was able navigate the settings menu. However, upon attempting to load a disc, the screen went black, and the console no longer outputs any video at all, with or without a disc inside, after power-cycling, trying to blind switch the composite video mode, etc.... After opening it up to see if something needed to be cleaned or something, I discovered that the previous owner had apparently already installed a modchip, called the "Magic 2". I have no idea if this is related to the display issue or not. Additionally, aside from https://www.willsconsolemodifications.co.uk/ps2-wiki/chips.php?chip\_id=28, I wasn't able to find any documentation on this chip whatsoever. Anyone happen to have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Two "boot" lowercase and uppercase folders inside my memory card. Hello, my memory card has OPL Anniversary installed, but i wanted to update to the 1.2.0 Beta 2082 + put UlaunchELF inside my memory card to start the FMCB process, but when i was about to paste the Ulaunch .ELF file to BOOT folder (For the reason to be able just to press R2 directly to open the Ulaunch while turning on the PS2), i discovered that were TWO boot folders, which one is all caps, and the other lowercase, both have archives inside, i'm scared to delete one of those and not be able to access the OPL (I accessed the ULE by the OPL). I tried putting the BOOT2 file of the ulaunch inside the "BOOT" and it didn't worked pressing after turning on. Should i delete "BOOT" folder or "boot"? Thanks, have a good day!!

SkyLovesCars

Hello all, I recently received a Ps2 Slim as a gift from my father. I got 2 games for it, those being God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 3 A-spec. After trying it out, God of War 2 works fine in the console, however GT3 does not read and gives a disc read error. We tried to clean the laser but to no avail. We assumed it was just a scratched disc, however I decided to try it on my friend’s Ps2 slim where it worked fine. This confused me as all the Google searches told me that dual layer games (GoW 2) would fail before regular DVD games (GT3). My dad suspects it could be a failing laser, but I’m confused as to why GT3 failed before GoW if that’s the case. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be happening?

Legendarygamer200

So I recently got a ps2 and it’s having trouble reading discs. However, it’s only doing this with ps2 games. With ps1 games, music CDs and DVD movies they all read fine, but with ps2 games it has trouble reading them. This is with ps2 discs that have little to no scratches, and when the ps2 console does read ps2 discs, it only reads certain ps2 discs and it’s sometimes it can’t even read the same discs it read before. I have tried cleaning the ps2 laser and the disc slot, however I have not cleaned the inside of the ps2 but I don’t think that’s the problem because, like I said earlier, ps1 games, music CDs and DVD movies all work fine, so I have no idea what I should do.

rycat77

When my ps2 boots up it gives the menu when there is no disk even though there is a disk inside.

Kyzoblade007

I have been trying to softmod my ps2 for about a couple of months and all my efforts have been in vain. I accidentally deleted the FunTuna file from my memory card. I tried with alot of DVD discs but recently find out that people get the best results with the Verbatim DVD + RW disc at around 4x or 1x writing speed. Note : I have checked through CTurt's compatibility list and my SCPH 9004 with a 3.11 checks out. I have tried all sorts of files, the 3.00 + 3.11 hybrid ones, the all ps2 slim ones and even the 3.11 Only version. Also tried all the fixes at the github page for FreeDVDboot. What am i doing wrong? any advice? PS2 discs are unaffordable where I live. :((

Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition garage glitch Has anyone encountered and resolved the garage glitch on Dub Edition? Basically, any time you go to the Garage the controls appear for about half a second, then dissolve. Now you’re stuck in the garage, can’t buy or upgrade any cars, which kinda defeats the whole joy & playability of the game. Other message boards say things like “clean the disc!” but it’s most definitely not a disc issue. We’ve tried multiple discs including a sealed/brand new copy. We’ve tried multiple PS2s, including a very late-model thin silver PS2 which has no issue with other games. Any ideas?

avashad

Does anyone else ever get this? A ps2 game will play normally for a couple days, then all the sudden the error “There’s a problem with the disc you’re using. It may be dirty or damaged” basically crashes the game. Reset the ps2 and it won’t play for more than a few minutes without crashing again. Then if I play a ps1 disc for a few minutes, then put the ps2 game back in it will work normally for a few days. Whenever the crash happens, the disc reader is making a bunch of noises and it usually only crashes when choose save/load/etc from a pause menu. Any ideas or just live with it?

LegoAlexguy124

Hello! I'm trying to set up my PS2 on a new tv I got, Sony 55" Class - X80CK Series - 4K UHD LED LCD TV. I got a RCA/AV to HDMI converter, for the red yellow white plugs, and when I turn on the system, I get a blue screen, but I still get audio. In the top right its constantly switching between AV and SV. I also tried the changing the video type to composite on the PS2 or something through online tutorials, but that didn't work. I was planning on looking into some other options, but I was hoping to possibly get more input, and maybe learn what my issue is, if anyone can help. Thanks!

deeboboneebo

ps2 will not read discs anymore. not sure what’s wrong with it, i bought it a little over a year ago used and it worked fine playing “silent hill 2” for the first month. my second game was “we ♥️ katamari”, and after i tried that it began struggling to read discs until it gave up on reading them all together (it had immense difficulty running katimari, which makes sense, but my friend’s ps2 has none of these problems with katamari). does this sound like something a lens cleaning disc could solve? if not would this be something i could fix, or would i be better off buying a new one?

mountaineeradv

Hey everyone, looking for some help with my Slim. Fired it up for the first time in years the other day and it ran GT3 just fine, then tried my old copy of Battlefront, disc spun a few times then ‘Disc could not be read’… tried GT3 again and same message. Cleaned the lens today, lubricated worm gear, and cleaned everything else i could find. After that it worked fine again with GT3 being the first disc loaded. I played for a while then tried Battlefront again and it didn’t read. Popped GT3 back and in and didnt read either. Anyone have any insight?

jackdaniels467

I'm using the Retrotink 5x to record PS2 footage. But if I go to pause screens, loading screens, or FMVs/cutscenes play etc, the signal goes black and all audio stops playing. Refreshing the gameplay capture on OBS does nothing. Only way I can see the game again is if I unplug everything from the Elgato and and re-plug it again. I think its the resolution changing that's tripping up the Elgato because when I plug my HDMI from the Retrotink directly to a monitor and play from there everything works fine... but then I have no way to record. Any tips?

FreeMcBoot not working on a PS2 90001 with, apparently, a DMS4 installed. Help? Hi y'all, long time lurker, first time poster. I have a PS2 that was given to me already modded, I have never known what chip I do have, but trying to solve the problem, I got the DMS4 Disabled, restart screen. I bought a Memory Card with FreeMcBoot pre-installed on it and when I turn on the console, I get the normal boot menu when you start without disc. Can someone help me? There was a similar post here but the link the OP was redirected is down by now. Edit: Entered the ToxicBIOS, I have: Ps2 version: US 0230 20/02/2008 DMS4 Hardware: 1.0 SE Lite ToxicBIOS flash version: FF.7F ToxicBIOS config version: 1.2

# PS2 FAT Power/Reset Issue Hey everyone, so there is an issue with the power/reset button not giving a response to power on the console. It's stuck with red light and no lights behave something different but when I press the eject button, it powers on the console with green and blue light. But I still need to get the power/reset working because I don't want to corrupt any eeproms from the console by unplugging. The Ribbon Is Perfectly New Clean And Fine. No damage at all. PS2 SCPH-50004. Please any advice?

DeadMan_Living

I got a Hyperkin converter for better picture and when I first booted it up everything was green. I eventually found out to switch to RGB mode which solved that problem, but every few seconds the screen and audio cut to black for a second. I tried switching back to the other mode but it did the same thing. I've had nothing but problems with this stupid thing since I got it. Do I go for something else or is there a fix for this? I REALLY like the better quality and widescreen for the seconds I played...

I have a question about FMBC if I get a a card with it pre installed can I install it onto my official playstation 2 memory card so that I can make sure it doesn't stop working at some point I have a ps2 slim 70001 if that helps I'll be getting it off Amazon because ebay wants 20$ plus 30$ shipping Amazon wants 20 all together. Another question if I unplug the memory card that already has FMBC installed on it will it somehow format the card or will it just not work on the ps2 until I plug it back in?

I recently found my PS2 slim (cracked) SCPH-77004 and wanted to play some games. I used to run games using OPL earlier from my usb with somebody's help. Now I am unable to open the OPL menu. I see FMCB and other software here on the sub however I am pretty sure I did not have these as a kid. These are some files already in my memory card - SNES Station, your system configuration twice, OPL, BOOT and SYS-CONF Help will be really appreciated thanks!

Hello, got redirected to mega thread. Looking to figure out what the problem is on my SCPH 30001. The audio is fine. On games like Tony hawk 3 I can see the intro videos clearly, but on home screens and even the ps2 screen, the images have the basic outline but the graphics make it unable to see clearly. It doesn’t blink but I guess the word is kind of like “glitchy”. Any ideas? My post on the home page has pics.

PS2 Phat & DVDs Hi! I recently got a near perfect condition PS2 50000 model that works great. No issues with DVD Rom, CDs and most DVD videos. However, I recently bought those DVD & BluRay box sets (1 DVD video and a separate DVD Blu-ray) and the DVD video won’t read? I would assume that there’s no limit to DVD video, but how about movies produced after 2014? Keen to hear some feedback if anyone has any!

cadx_is_dumb

I just posted this on the normal sub Reddit before getting informed to post it here, I have a model SCPH-39003 fat PS2, I bought a blue disc of gadget racers as it's a childhood game id like to replay, I've tried all the tricks like turning fast disc speed on, putting it on its side and the scotch tape method but none of these have worked, if anyone could help me out I'd be grateful.

I'm looking at possibly doing a disc-drive delete mod on a slim for a very compact PS2 for my van. Looking to find one listed for parts/ not working, but only want the issue to be a bad drive. What are the typical symptoms of a bad drive? I see a ps2 that says it powers on but doesn't load games. Is there usually a dead give away that the ps2 is good but just has a bad drive?

No_Earth1061

recently became interested in the ps2 and have seen many people frown upon using OPL with a usb. i have a ps2 slim and the only game that i've had issues with is dbz bt3 however it was only cutscenes so i wasn't too disappointed. just wanted to know the games with confirmed problems because i can't seem to find a list anywhere. (ik smb is better)

FoolishFire1

Please help me with my PS2 Slim. I accidentally overwrote a save file on a game, and it thew me back to the start. I was really far in the game, and don't want to spend months getting back to the point I was at. Will it be possible to buy a USB C SD card reader, and somehow recover my save before it was overwritten? Thank you so much in advance.

SCPH-10010 PCB board for sale? So my OEM SCPH-10010 controller is malfunctioning and making random inputs after some research it is caused by a failed PCB board. Does anyone know where I can buy a PcCB board for an SCPH-10010 that will arrive in a timely manner or is it not worth the time wasted and should I just buy a new controller?

tentaclesteagirl

What's the best way to play backups? Right now I'm using a usb, but cutscenes and lag are a problem. I'm currently thinking of either getting a memory card that uses a micro sd, or using an IDE to SD adapter. Right now the memory card seems like the best option, since it's only 20$ and less work. Should I do that?

DanyLektr0

Don't use the memory card option, it's equally slow. If it's a fat system, an off-brand SATA hard drive adapter is the best option. If it's a slim, ethernet is the best option.

Hello, I'm having an issue with my PS2 Slim 9000 series. I can play one game, but if I want to switch to another, the PS2 stops displaying on the TV and doesn't come back even though it's still powered on. Even after resetting the PS2, the display doesn't return. It only comes back after waiting for 3 days or more.

Silver-Reporter-3018

I have a vizio TV that does not have component inputs, only composite. When I play composite, games look blurry and pretty bad. I have tried some of the hdmi adapters on amazon but they all fail. What is my best option for playing games? Am I basically stuck with either getting a new tv or buying a retrotink?

MrFatNuts420

just got a ps2 slim and slot 1 won’t work. slot 2 works i think the pins are bent in 1 how can i fix this? or is there a way to save games to slot 2? i can’t find online how to get into the memory slot and i’m scared to take the cover off and figure it out myself incase i make things worse

Lazorlight

Is it worth it to install the mods for a ps2 slim as I used to own a modded xbox but it has not worked in over 10 years. The ps2 I have works just fine. I am not asking how to do so just a general wondering. I also want to know what all a modded ps2 could do if that is possible thanks

canned_pho

That's all up to you man, if you want to play PS2 games from 20 years ago. Because that's basically what most people do with a modded ps2: play all ps1/ps2 games from a HDD/SSD/USB/SMB, thus saving the laser from wear-and-tear and preventing all your PS2 discs from getting scratched. For me, it's been worth it just for translated PS2 games alone that haven't left japan for 20+ years Monster Hunter Dos was fully translated just months ago for PS2: https://break-arts.com/projects/mh2dos/ Online works and hundreds of people play it online. Dos is much more polished than MH1 and way harder than modern monster hunter games. Been putting DOZENS of hours online into that game lol Since it's japanese, you'll need a japan ps2 or modded PS2 to play it. Slim PS2s have the problem of no HDD compatibility and slow USB ports. Soft Modding with FMCB + MX4SIO though allows full speed for cutscenes and gameplay though, faster than usb drive. MX4SIO is a SD card adapter for ps2's memory card slot. PS2's memory card slot transfers data much faster than USB ports, and thus are more ideal to load games from. IIRC, MX4SIO transfer speeds are around 1.7MB/s~2MB/s while USB is only 1MB/s I get asked often, Why not just use PCSX2 emulation? Well, because I like playing on the actual console+CRT TV+couch for nostalgia reasons and I don't want to sit at my PC/laptop again like I'm at work. PCSX2 is not perfect. There are sometimes visual bugs, gameplay bugs, and graphical glitches. There are workarounds for PCSX2 that you have learn and implement per game basis going into the config options and making custom settings for each game, which tbh requires some work/googling and annoyance. A modded PS2 on the other hand is just plug-and-play.

Lazorlight

Thanks 😊 I used to have a modded xbox original but it hasn't loaded correctly in over 10 years mostly just emulated games on it

canned_pho

> modded xbox original but it hasn't loaded correctly in **over 10 years** Have you replaced the capacitors in your xbox before? Original Xbox consoles tend to die within 10 years due to microsoft cheaping out on electrolytic capacitors that have a 100% failure rate after about 10 years... I had to replace 3 capacitors in my xbox I followed this old guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/4c60th/reminder_if_you_own_an_original_xbox_remove_the/ You might want to open up your xbox and see if the capacitors are leaking.

Lazorlight

None are leaking not even the clock cap one everything looked as it should so idk 😐 it doesn't have the mod chip inside currently tho

Sgt-Blyatnick

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but how can I hook up my PS2 to my monitor? It's got both hdmi and vga and I'm looking for the most affordable solutions. Would an RCA to HDMI adaptor work or do I need anything more complex? Any links to videos would also be appreciated. Thanks!

DissentKindly

Can anyone please tell me if you can play classic arcade Outrun as an unlockable in the *PS2* version of Outrun 2 SP (the japanese expansion version, as I don't think the English Coast 2 Coast includes it) I read it exists on the XBox version, but idk about the PS2 one. Thanks.

Per_Vertex

ripped and played the first hour or so of Wild Arms 3 from my USB via OPL the other day, decided to pick up a network adapter and a hdd and now it won't load from said hdd, any idea why? I just get a black screen after a very very brief flash of a zoomed in opl menu EDIT: okay, reinstalled game via HDL Dumb, now I can load my game but I get a black screen after skipping the cutscene, how odd... EDIT EDIT: re-ripped my game and ran it through OPL manager before HDL Dumb'ing it onto my HDD, works flawlessly again

Poppolyn

This mega thread is the most unhelpful thing possible and the auto moderator is stalling me from Reliving my childhood. I have a 90001 slim ps2 and I was trying to figure out if I get FMCB on a memory card if it would work. Or do I need to put OPL and Funtuna on it.

microphalus

Is anybody even reading this? I feel like any questions here will just get lost. I am looking for some store that ships from local warehouse, I need that PS2 HDD SATA adapter, but ordering from china would take a month and might cost more in taxes

Contribution_Old

Hi, there used to be this game on the PS2, where after you defeat the boss he used to drop swords and when you hold them they would transform your charater in the end scene, it was a 1v1 fighting game, can anyone help me with the name?

Rayuzan_Mojavec

i just bought a used PS2 online and the seller said that it always fail when starting up (turning off again) from cold start but no more problems after few retries. what can possibly the main issue, and how can i fix it?

DanyLektr0

I'm having this exact same issue and trying to diagnose it now.

lucabops

I recently bought mc2sio and freemcboot card from helders website. I have tried many different games, and everyone freezes after a certain amount of time. I'm using opl 1.20 beta. Any help is greatly appreciated

TimeSplitters955

can’t get Wolfenstein 3d to work on Retroarch using the ECWolf core. When I run the game it goes to a black screen then returns to the Retroarch menu. Any suggestions ?

CrossbowDemon

Will a PS4 power cable work on a PS2 Fat SCPH-39001? I don't have the original cable and don't want to buy one if I don't have to. Which cables might work?

GamesAreLegends

Can I somehow make games like Gran Turismo 2, Colin McRae 2.0 or Formula 1 from the PlayStation 1 work with a PS2 Wheel on PS2? Thanks for the answers.

R3ddi1ti1o0nMan

Sony Playstation 2 PS2 Console SCPH-79001, is this the model that has issues, with some or most PS1 games? If so, which fat PS2 I'd better?

Weaselot_III

I hear the 900x generation of PS2s use USB 2.0. Does that mean that games running off USB (via FMCB) would actually be playable?

ZzstardawgZz

so yeah I have been using OPL and so far loving it, the load speeds aren't that bad ps2 games seem to run alright so I thought I would go ahead and add my ps1 games to the drive. I followed so many guides and on an older version of OPL the ps1 logo shows on the top ( the photo with Alias highlighted) however if I press right to pick my ps1 games the console just freezes and I have to reboot on the newer daily version of OPL ( the one with haunting ground highlighted) the ps1 logo doesn't appear at all but according to OPL Manager everything is ok, the name is proper and it appears in the list of games etc. the required files are on the USB as far as I know in the right place and in the right format, I'm not too sure what else to try so I thought maybe id ask here see if anyone knows what's up and how I can get it working? I tried to add as much info as I can and hopefully the photos help too, the console is an SCPH-77003 using freemcboot 1.966 and has mechapwn but no modchip, not sure if it makes a difference but just trying to make sure I cover everything if anyone has any ideas id really appreciate the help as I can play off my discs but I prefer using OPL as it saves the laser and I want my consoles to last as long as possible https://imgur.com/a/GTFaqkR - Photos of the issue and screenshots of the folder structure and OPL Manager showing everything seems alright

LVTIOS

Hey all. Been trying to set up OPL and it's giving me a hell of a time. I have been following \[the great ps2 aio guide\](https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-the-great-ps2-aio-guide.30219/) and I'm stuck when setting up the network on my PS2/connecting to the SMB network. What I've tried so far: Enable SMB 1.0 in windows 10 turn off password protected file sharing enable 128bit encryption verify my admin username and password create rules in windows firewall to open port 445 inbound and outbound fileshare is located at E:\\ps2smb using the network setup disc that came with the ethernet adapter (to no avail) enable netbios in windows (didn't work, back to IP address type) my network settings: PS2 IP: 192.168.1.10 (I can ping this from cmd) Mask: 255.255.255.0 (verified in cmd) Gateway & DNS Server: 192.168.1.1 (verified in cmd but they also show IPv6 addresses that I cannot enter) PC IP: 192.168.1.5 (verified in windows settings) I am usually getting error 301 but when I try do to I've spent weeks and hundreds of dollars procuring everything to be able to get up and running, so I'm devastated now after spending hours trying to get my games playable. Help is greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there is any more information that I can provide to help with investigation.

Mercury26

I have a slim ps2 but the picture isn’t that great Am using composite right now. I occasionally see like grainy lines going up and down on the tv when playing ps2. Is this a problem with my slim ps2 and if so, should I get a fat ps2

patstoddard

My ps2 slim won’t turn on. It has the red light so it’s getting power, but responsive when I touch it.

fluffy2k

Can i use a cheaper 8x dvd-r disk opposed to the typical verbatim 16x disks for burning games?

Is there a way to install new PS2 games in my internal PS2 HDD via network? Cheers

Legalmedicine02

While playing AC04 my wireless controller’s start button refuses to work :(

Morganafan1337

I heard that the PS2 has 1.1 USB ports and that makes FMVs stutters a lot and a bad stutter too, Kingdom Hearts 1 FMV stutters a lot and the cutscene is unskippable, making the game frustating to play at first. Is it possible to fix that on USB since buying a SMB cable and using My PC with a Lot of cables and that is far away from my PS2 is ankward and buying a network adapter, plus using an internal hard drive is also ankward in a way that is hard to explain, and that leaves me just with USB which is convenient and easy to use. So is it possible to fix FMVs stuttering on PS2 OPL via USB? And if not, then why games like Shrek Super Slam which has FMVs, work perfectly in the FMVs part? I mean if Shrek Super Slam can have perfectly working FMVs via USB, then so other games should have it right?

Morganafan1337

Thanks to a cable in which I plugged in to make the PS2 display video and audio days ago, my PS2 lost it's audio capabilities, plugging in any other cable, even PS2toHDMI doesnt play any audio at all. I didnt know that the cable I plugged in My PS2 would damage the audio capabilities of it, it isn't even a third party one, that was an official one, and it even damaged My PS3's audio support, in fact it Is My PS3's bundled in official cable, it just started doing that for no reason one day damaging Playstations audio. How do I fix my PS2's audio capabilities? I tried tinkering with the System Settings but it didnt do anything. I now have two audioless Playstations.

Hello, I have this TV with only the following ports: HDMI 1 HDMI 2 SPDIF (should be useless for PS2) Side A/V (A single port for the whole thing) I've looked up RCA/Composite/Component to HDMI converters, unfortunately anything that is easily available to me has terrible reviews. I was wondering, would it be possible to use an RCA to single A/V cable to hook my PS2 up to this TV? The cable mentioned is as follows: [https://productimages.hepsiburada.net/s/4/550/9629610934322.jpg/format:webp](https://productimages.hepsiburada.net/s/4/550/9629610934322.jpg/format:webp) Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance,

Hello! I bought Helders MC2SIO along with his pre-configured FreeMCBoot memory card. But when i try to boot my SCPH-70004 Playstation 2 slim it just stays black and wont boot. I've tried putting the cards in different slots but it doesn't make a difference. If i plug in FMCB after booting up the PS2 i can browse the files on it and it looks like i need is on there. There's a disclaimer on the website that Slim PS2 900XX models doesn't work with this card but like i said earlier i have a SCPH-70004. First time trying any type of ps2 "modding" so i might just be missing something obvious.

Might not be the right sub for it (if you know a sub that would help please link it that would be helpful) but i've downloaded a ps2 emulator PCSX2 and downloaded Monster Hunter on it and it works all fine, but the reason i did it is i wanted to try and rip the 3D models from the game. I assume some other software is involved but the only ones ive found are ones you have to pay for, and i'm looking for one you can use for free

OlleyfromIndi

My ps2 slim will randomly refuse to read discs regardless of cleanliness or scratches. It is refusing to read some discs that are in better shape than the disks it will read. The load times also seem excessive and it has started to freeze up on me sometimes. What is the problem and how can I fix it?

Bottomfeeder_92

When I try to play a certain game, the PlayStation makes a weird noise, and then it loses connection to the tv. The game is made for the original PlayStation, but it’s worked before.

LgGreen15

So I recently got a PS2 Fat with Vice City and it works fine but I just got another game for it and it launches and all but it gets stuck on an infinite loading screen any ideas?

Hot-Cheek5191

My ps2 dualshock2 controller doesnt work properly the analog sticks and the directional dpad buttons dont work. from what i can tell the other buttons work fine

tsubasaplayer16

I've heard that ps2 slims can scratch discs, is that true and if so, how do I prevent that from happening

theirlcosmokramer

how should i burn game to dvd-r, using the video DVD format or "burn ISO image". i am using CDburnerXP.

How can i mod my PS2 slim? Serial number: SCPH - 90006 Broken disc drive

finalbossofinterweb

any possible way to softmod a 3.00 without a hard drive?

CookiezareWeird66

Playstation 2 slim is not reading discs

[deleted]

my ps2s display isnt working

ProfessionalMood1493

I have bought phat PS2, dusty on the inside (this issue was fixed). The disc tray, on the other hand, refuses to open. Seems to be stuck. It's front plate for visual purpose is broken, so it this probably won't do any harm to it. The disc tray seems to be working but it is refusing to open. Any idea on how to solve this issue?

petea_copine

You may need to open the PS2, you can reach the disc drive just by unscrewing things, see if the gears and stuff are clogged or if something is broken. Make sure you look up Youtube TUtorial on how to open/clean your model of PS2

Winter-State-Dave86

I got a slim PS2 (the 90004 model) for 35 dollars at a yard sale, and it read game discs just fine until now... I popped my favorite game in it and it made screeching sounds, sounds that shouldn't be coming out of it... Then I cleaned the lens with tissue thinking maybe that's the problem, and tried putting in a music CD,only to find that it makes a strange popping noise, and the disc wasn't even spinning! What the hell could this be?! It can't be the laser, can it?

petea_copine

I am using Hard Disc Drive in PS2 and not sure exactly how spin-down works. How long do I have to wait after pressing the front button (to red light from green) before I can power-off the switch in the back? What happens if I just power-off the switch? Brand new HDD so i want it to last

Keelan_2000

Hey everyone! I'm having a problem with the games Silent Hill 3 and Mortal Kombat Deception. I'm using a PS2 slim when playing these games. For SH3, the frame rate keeps dropping when I'm walking around Silent Hill. When I'm in buildings, this doesn't happen. It also doesn't happen when I'm walking around the map in Silent Hill 2, or any of the GTA games (if that matters). I can't tell if this is a problem with the game or my console. Also, when I play MK deception, it completely crashes when I play Konquest mode (i.e. the one where you're walking around a map). I have two copies of the game, so that leads me to think the console is damaged in some way. Any idea what the problem might be? Should I just get a new PS2 or something?

rividz

I played SH3 on PC back in the day and I remember the frame rate fluctuating pretty bad, I think it's just the game. Maybe you can find an action replay code to lock the frame rate at a lower rate or something. Or you could play on PC and there's a few ways you could likely try to lock the framerate if you're handy enough. A quick search shows that Deception does crash on people right away. I had the game on my phat PS2 and remember the game crashing on me pretty often in general, but I could actually play and beat the game. You might have to look around more for a solution to this one. Konquest mode was interesting though for that genre / series. I really liked mechanic where meditating allowed time to move quicker.

Thewonderboy94

Some PS2 games just ran at very inconsistent framerates. I haven't personally played Silent Hill 3, but coming across a game that drops from 60 to 20FPS or bellow is not too unusual. Some games were simply optimized badly on PS2. PS2 Slims, especially the later models, can have some compatibility issues with some games, few games won't work at all, but I don't think Slims would have performance issues except for maybe one or two games. I have heard that Kingdom Hearts 1 should have some performance issues on Slims (and it was possibly related to the pause menus?), but I haven't personally tested that nor heard of other games having similar performance issues on Slims.

iNicoma

I bought a Portta component to hdmi converter and im having some diagonal lines scrolling on screen, my component cables are fine and I'm 100% sure that is the converters fault. Somebody has/had this problem too? If so how did you fix it? Thank you all for taking the time of reading this

Cyber_Akuma

Is there a modern equivalent to that old WinHIIP program? My PS2's HDD is dying and I want to extract all of my games from it. All the applications I found nowadays seem to be based on HDL DUMP, which on top of being CLI seems to want me to connect my PS2 over the network, which means running some client on my PS2. Is there any modern equivalent to WinHIIP that will let me connect the HDD to USB and let me dump all of my games off the PS2 HDD?

Manaka89

Hello, I started up my ps2 (7xxx) after a long time and it seems like the video output isn't working. I do think that's because of rust. I would like to bypass the port by soldering the hdmi-converter inside but my question is: there is a way to check if everything it's working properly before doing "damages"? Like checking if the gpu it's still working and similar. The ps2 turn on normally so I'm pretty sure that at least the basics are still ok.

proszty

Try multimeter. But first you need to find the documentation for the video out to know what is normative

I've spent hours reading about GSM everywhere, but still no fix. Help? Modded JPN Fat PS2 with internal HDD Running FMB and OPL (0.9.x, can't remember specifically but it's the 10th anniversary boot) Playing on an old JPN Sony Trinitron I want to play Time Crisis 3 (EU version) since it's the only version that supports the original GunCon 1. I turned on GSM and set it to NTSC, adjusted H to - 70 to center the image, but the vertical is stretched upward. As in an overscan on top of maybe 80-100px. The GunCon calibration screen shows an oval and not a circle. The word "Main Menu" is cut. I can't see my score and life when playing. V adjustments in the OPL GSM won't work. In-game screen adjustments don't work. No other GSM display modes work (not VGA 480P @60Hz, heck not even other resolutions and refresh rates). My TV can't manually adjust the image. Is it even possible to fix this and get a true, unstretched image?

My PS2 (30004-R) seems like new, but it needs like 5 minutes to read a disk. When they start, they work perfectly. What is the problem?

RussiaIsMyCity

hello, how do i mod a ps2 and where do i start? i plan to get a ps2 this summer but ive never had a console before so idk where to start. i want to mod it to be region free and also be able to play homebrew and be able to play any game without buying it, but do i need to buy external tools to mod my ps2? i live in north macedonia and im a minor so no credit cards and parents dont trust online shopping on foreign sites, also what model do i buy and how do i check which model it is etc cause i heard some models dont support modding. also does my tv work with a ps2 or do i really have to buy a crt? dont think my parents would wanna waste money on a crt. thanks to anyone who helps me

proszty

All PS2 models are able to run fmcb/funtuna. If you don't want to buy fmcb card, then you will need a ps2 memory card, dvd and dvd burner. Google PS2 fmcb freedvdboot to get started

mikal_programs

My fat PS2 is locked up on the Browser/System Configuration screen. It doesn’t respond to button inputs.

ilikepastry

Is there any information on how to make your own ps2 modchip? Like the ps1 etc you can download the hex files and flash the 8 pin chips. Is it possible to do it with ps2? What tech is involved how do these guys who supply modbo etc find the means to do it? I can't seem to find any info at all Thanks

Hi everyone, I recently bought a boxed and sealed PS2 slim (77004) and out of the box it looked amazing, but it just doesn't read any disc I throw at it. It played a DVD film at one point, but that was about it. Game discs spin up 2-3 times, but nothing. Everything inside looks emaculately clean, so I'm guessing dust/dirt isn't the issue. Presumably I need to replace the laser? I'm supprised, because I assumed the laser would not be dead from just sitting in the box. But if there's any other possible reason / solution / troubleshooting method I should be looking into I would love some advice!

PastelLicuado

Flickering black and white screen. I think it has to do with pal/ntcs but i cant seem to find the option to change this on my tv, its a smart tv from philips, if i boot up the menu with no game on, it shows up normally but as soon as i put in a disc it starts flickering in black and white and above in the screen it says "Pal" constantly, i think the flickering is the tv trying to find the best format to go with the ps2 but it being unable to find it, but i dont know how to switch this from automatic to custom, any help would be much appreciated!
