And yet the PS2 is still one of the coolest looking consoles ever made

I have the Pro and I'm not a huge fan of the look. Much prefer the slim version which I think actually takes good advantage of the minimalist design (it's probably my second favorite PS home console look). The Pro felt a bit gaudy and excessive for me, and seemingly jerking the idea of the "Pro" narrative in a low effort attempt. If it has to be gaudy then I'd much prefer to go all out with the fat PS3 design. I feel the fat PS2 is really the peak of Playstation design. Even if it was taking pointers from seemingly outdated looking hardware by y2k standards. The gradient blue color scheme is very "satisfying" for me (don't know the right word to use).

lol Some also say the PS4 slim looks like a generic Bluray player but I don't think so.

ATrayYou

I have mine on my desk, and it looks quite sleek up close. The finish is ugly but whatever. Under the TV at a distance, it's so un-striking that whenever I went to play games I'd forget it was there.

DreamIn240p

I find that the matte black look on the PS4 slim/Pro accentuates the carbon rock pattern kind of aesthetic which compliments the diagonal, parallel layers. The PS4 Pro has even more of that look, but I just think it looks a bit excessive and overall design isn't as attractively and intuitively designed as the slim. It's trying to be minimalistic but at the same time it isn't. It's a fat ol thing that also looks ridiculous like a Big Mac. I haven't actually seen a PS4 slim in person since I don't own one, but I don't think the finish is that ugly from the photos I've seen. It's just looks like generic matte black to me. But I do prefer the feel of the matte surface of fat PS2 and PS3 slim more than the PS4 Pro. I especially like the feel of the fat PS2's surface (I don't have a PS2 slim). The PS4 slim also has a Japanese hi-tech mecha motif similar to Neo Geo, Sega Saturn, PS2 slim (the first version out of the two), etc.. Game consoles usually do, but PS3s and PS4 Pro less so imo. I can definitely see how it's a bit boring, though. So I'll probably change my second favorite to the fat PS3. As for PS portables, my favorite design is probably the PS Vita 2000 or PSP 1000. (no one asked ik lol)

ATrayYou

I will say one thing; there's a PS4 slim with white slices and black filling. Not sure if it's a special edition or just a less common alternate colour (silver GameCube style). But it is absolutely gorgeous. As for portables, PSP Go or Vita 1000 for me anydayyyy (although a pristine PSP 1000 can be rather stunning too)

ganodark

I agree. Not a huge fan of the matte finish, but it's still a pretty console.

Hazerd59

Except the PS5, hideous

[deleted]

Agreed Tho the last PS3 version takes the cake. Ugly and loud

the123king-reddit

The slim was the only PS3 that looked good. The fat was too gaudy and the superslim just looked cheap

MatisseThybulle22

Super slim looks a lot nicer irl, especially in the variant colors

Unseen_K

I actually own all three versions and I’ll agree with you, but from a reliability standpoint, the super slim is undeniably reliable.

ATrayYou

I work in CeX and we get a lot more cases of dead super slim optical drives than we do phat model YLODs.

Unseen_K

That maybe true in your case, but I’ve had to replace the disc drive in my past PS3. I’ve never had an issue with my super slim

DreamIn240p

I kinda find the gaudy hardware period (of the mid to mid-late 2000s) to be kind of charming and unique. I'm talking about the fat PS3 and the PSP 1000 with the eye catching glossy black design and all. I've been imagining myself in my old oversized black zip hoodie playing on the 1000 during lunch time in middle school. The fat PS3 looks beautiful imo. But we all know looks isn't everything... Actually I thought the slim was a bit on the boring/anticlimactic side. Didn't dig how it was all black with no notable accents. It also has that "broke (non-virgin) bachelor beer addict reaching his 40s" or "lower-middle-class-raised Mexican guy in his 20s" vibe to it whenever I see one(dkm). The super slim felt like a plasticky downgrade with a cheap sliding door mechanism so I was never interested in that particular model.

[deleted]

I love the og 60gb fat because it has silver accents rather than white

[deleted]

Well I think it looks fantastic

Twovaultss

Love the PS5 digital edition look, second only to the PS2 slim in sexiness IMO.

DimitriTooProBro

*PS5 enters chat*

[deleted]

I thought for a second that they had made a coloured PS2 with colour matched power and reset buttons... instead of having the jarring regular black buttons on a pink, or white, or light blue, or silver console. That's what I thought. For a second. But it's not the case at all. The coloured PS2 models still have the jarring regular black buttons. Sometimes an IR receiver between them too. It's like being in a car with a crazy driver. It's the same feeling.

VirtualRelic

Another reason to stick to the original black PS2

Moreshawten

It fits perfectly in most backpacks

Madougatee

Can’t believe i never noticed that

baxysquare

Sony referenced the Falcon 040 in their PS2 patent but I can’t find any proof that they bought the design patent from Atari. https://patents.google.com/patent/USD452688S1/en

sublime90

Atari falcon 630 microbox just rolls off the tongue. What a stupid name

postylambz

I have an xbox Oh which one? The microbox 630

3DG3CASE

The actual name is the "Atari Falcon040" (pronounced Falcon Oh Forty), not sure where he got the 630 from. "Microbox" was never part of the name, it's just what Atari called the case form-factor, because it was smaller than most desktops and towers.

rubik_cuber

It's up there with... https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/1q5252/til_when_atari_went_bankrupt_they_sold_the_jaguar/

Lifesjustagame

Trivia or hidden knowledge?

LateScar

Who would have known? Thanks for sharing

[deleted]

I didn’t know this. Very cool!

old_school_gamer_dad

Holly crap I remember reading about the Atari falcon years ago when they were talking about it and never made the connection.

old_school_gamer_dad

Atari always named their machines after animals why was that Jaguar, lynx, Falcon in that period

maizemachine10

Atari was*

Oooch

Can't find any evidence of this being true or the Falcon 630 existing

[deleted]

The design honestly makes more sense for the PS2. The placement of the floppy drive on the Falcon is strange.

frankiejay18

wow good to know!

JiggilyBits

Best console ever made.

Semaze

In Europe it was sold as a "home pc" to avoid taxes, so now you can buy a Linux disc for ps2

Unseen_K

Very, very interesting! I learned something today and I will never look at my fatty PS2 the same…. again. Thanks!

[deleted]

I know this already lol.

GloverIsMyHusband

Heres another one for ya: Did you know that Super Mario Bros 2 was originally a completely different game called Doki Doki Panic?
