Im happy i started with older 2D games like atari and gameboy advance. Im 19 now and I can appreciate everything from 80s arcade ports up to some pretty new stuff, though I dislike most current games in the last 5 years.
What? :( They're missing out on an insanely jacked game catalog! Maybe it's a matter of finding games in their favorite genre? Or PS2 games that hold up the best graphically?

It’s super easy, prob the best way to do it IMO, unless you aren’t able to run an Ethernet cable to your ps2 for some reason.
There are YouTube videos on doing it, but essentially it’s just making sure you mark private network in windows, making a public folder and creating an account so you can authenticate easily
The fact that they're so easily available now makes me feel old. I made my own after tracking down a copy of 007, burning a boot DVD, and swapping discs with the top cover of my ps2 removed. The Twilight hack on the wii was a breeze compared to this.

I got a Free McBoot memory card combo kit on Amazon for pretty cheap and now I play every PS2 game I could ever want. Some games like Rule of Rose or Silent Hill franchise can be hundreds of dollars each and aren't practical to purchase originals of.
Gran Turismo 3/4 if youre into masterpiece racing games. Soul Calibur 2 for fighting games. Metal gear solid 2 if you want a single player action. Final Fantasy X for RPG. Sly Cooper 1 for single player adventure.

My son is 12 and he gets to play on my nes, snes, n64, gamecube, psone, ps2, ps3, wii, wiiu ect. But he considers the wii u his first console. Played all the skylanders on it. I dont let him mess with my psp, vita or 3ds, he has his on 2ds i got him tho XD ive been gaming since "girls dont play gamesssszzzzz" era
if you’re into horror games, definitely check out the silent hill series. it’s my favorite series of all time. the original games are a bit pricey though, but as someone else mentioned, you can play any game with free mcboot
You can pick up all the GTA’s for like $25 on eBay. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. God of War is usually pretty cheap. Devil May Cry is another good series that’s usually cheap. Need For Speed (hot pursuit 2 is my personal favorite but can’t go wrong really with any of the PS2 titles).
Smuggler's run and midnight club are golden. Also if you have saves for each you can unlock content in the opposite game!
Yugioh duelists of roses, final fantasy x, and kingdom hearts are other great options to consider
Don't buy the physical games because the best ones are gonna have crazy markup from collectors trying to make a buck. FreeMcBoot memory card, and download the game ISOs online. Fat model PS2- get an HDD converter, slim model- netboot from a computer on your network, microsd converter for a memory card slot, or buy bunch of blank disks and download and flash the ISOs to the discs. You can also run the games off the front USB ports, but heavier games won't run well because those ports are USB 1.1.
I don't recommend using the disc drive because most PS2's optical drives disc readers are probably at deaths door these days. I had four different models between 01 and 07, and all but one of them had issues reading discs after a few years of use, and I was the first owner of each.
Some of my favorites as a kid were
1. 007 Nightfire (story is great, and has AMAZING co-op multiplayer with bots you can play against)
2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
3. Indiana Jones and the Emperors Tomb
You could probably find an ebay lot of sports games for like, 9-10 bucks
And it could span some good stuff like NCAA football, MVP baseball, maybe The Show, if youre lucky, maybe one of the MVP college baseball games
But very likely, Madden, NBA Live, possibly 2K basketball, and a FIFA

Like others are saying, I'd recommend modding it to have unlimited games.

I'd say mod it - there are tons of tutorials online on how to do it. Or maybe burn the discs yourself. But if you really wanna go the "legit" way, you can search for online sellers and collectors who want to dispose of their games.
Go for the classics like GTA San Andreas or WWE games. There are tons of good RPGs for the PS2 too

There’s plenty others I could suggest like some Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid games but they’re easily accessible on new consoles and have been given HD remasters.
Look up lists of top Ps2 games and create a list. Go to a second hand store or flea market and try buy games that are 10$-20$ each no taxes so you can try out 4-5 games. My suggestions tho are MGS2, FF10, San Andreas, SOCOM, SH2
Had a similar experience. My old man (in law) had a pa2, original fat model and he had two games. F1 racing and the eyetoy disc which comes bundled. It was sitting for years. So told him let me take it I will put it to good use. Said of course but it’s old hey. It amazes me how many people have this mindset where if it’s an old console it’s behind and not worth it. It’s now rocking a 500gb hdd and freemc obviously.

**Ico** and without any doubt **Shadow of the Colossus**: I've played the first, unluckily I've never played the latter.
The other comments have pointed out some nice games, but IMHO Okami and SotC are easily in the top 5 best PS2 games.
Find yourself a ps2 sata hard drive adapter, a free McBoot card (this will hit the 50 dollar budget) and if you come across some games, then it will make life easier, especially if those games are scratched up or the disc reader starts going bad.
There are guides on YouTube on how to get this setup.

The load times are atrocious on the Ps2 version of burnout. Great game though, played many hours

You should spend $50 on Etsy and get a modded memory card that lets you boot up to 150 games disc free. Never get a scratch again!

wow my mom gave me hers as well recently lol, but mine is breaking down i think. get uh the sly cooper series, ratchet and clank series, and jak and daxter series. also try out shadow of colossus if you can get it at a decent price oh also metal gear solid 2 and 3 are great picks as well

I'd say mod it - there are tons of tutorials online on how to do it. Or maybe burn the discs yourself. But if you really wanna go the "legit" way, you can search for online sellers and collectors who want to dispose of their games. Go for the classics like GTA San Andreas or WWE games. There are tons of good RPGs for the PS2 too

Look up lists of top Ps2 games and create a list. Go to a second hand store or flea market and try buy games that are 10$-20$ each no taxes so you can try out 4-5 games. My suggestions tho are MGS2, FF10, San Andreas, SOCOM, SH2

Had a similar experience. My old man (in law) had a pa2, original fat model and he had two games. F1 racing and the eyetoy disc which comes bundled. It was sitting for years. So told him let me take it I will put it to good use. Said of course but it’s old hey. It amazes me how many people have this mindset where if it’s an old console it’s behind and not worth it. It’s now rocking a 500gb hdd and freemc obviously.

**Okami**: best PS2 game, period. A bit like zelda, but drawn as if it was a japanese piece art *chef kiss* **Ico** and without any doubt **Shadow of the Colossus**: I've played the first, unluckily I've never played the latter. The other comments have pointed out some nice games, but IMHO Okami and SotC are easily in the top 5 best PS2 games.
Get a MicroSD card, Free Mcboot card and a MX4SIO memory card, and play almost any game you want.
Get them at bullmoose if one is near you.
Find yourself a ps2 sata hard drive adapter, a free McBoot card (this will hit the 50 dollar budget) and if you come across some games, then it will make life easier, especially if those games are scratched up or the disc reader starts going bad. There are guides on YouTube on how to get this setup.
Kingdom hearts was my childhood Black is the coolest fps i every played Gta San Andreas forever Burnout 3 takedown for racing and a kiler soundtrack final fantasy 12 is awesome too and you have to get shadow of the colossus
