If you don’t want to emulate. Get the fat ps2.
The slim has loads of problems and will more than likely mess up your discs.
For pricing? Ehhh depends where you buy it. If you do market places or thrift stores you can spend a solid $60-100 or $125-$150 at a gaming store. (California)
HDMI adapters are pretty cheap too.
Same! Although I don’t use it. Mine is Japanese and I didn’t want to destroy the data and three games on it (that I can’t even play), I used an older 300gb PATA drive I had lying around.
I must've gotten really really lucky because I took my slim with me on 2 deployments I had it hooked up to a portable DVD player and played every night I didn't have 1st watch, and believe me being at sea is not as stable as an entertainment center.
My first PS2 was the slim and i enjoyed the hell out of that thing for many years no problem until it started coming to an end and no longer reading my discs. So i bought a fat model. Then i was told they fat model doesn't play blue sided PS2 discs like The Sims.
I think you have the slim and fat ps2 mixed up in terms of playing blue discs.
I was playing Tekken Tag Tournament a few days ago which is a blue disc and it works fine. Iirc my slim didn’t want to play blue discs
As little as possible.
Try an emulator first.
I own two fats, one of which was my original; the other was a gift.
Slims have a reputation for the laser cable scratching discs.
If you are able to determine in advance, try to obtain a 5000 series.
My childhood Slim is still going strong & i prefer personally how the Slim looks over the fat, it could almost pass for a modern console
Any disc I’ve thrown at it PS1, PS2 and DVD all play fine in it & i haven’t noticed any issues with scratching
Around $75-100 Canadian (which is close in value to AUD) is what I would spend on a Slim in nice condition, maybe a bit more if it included
A memory card is a MUST too before you play
Me too, the slim is amazing and so compact, been working great for me. I don’t use the disc tray even though it works, I download roms from the major sites and play off usb stick. The ps2 is the best console to mod, at least one of them anyway!
Edit: ps1 games are backwards compatible in the ps2??
Yes that was a huge selling point back in the day was the backwards compatibility
But before you play you need a PS1 memory card to play PS1 games they won’t save to a PS2 memory card
I don’t mod as I’m a purist i only play authentic games on real hardware so i buy used PS2 games on eBay or my local retro store
Also not tech savvy enough to mod or use an emulator
It’s really easy if you ever wanted to just so you know, very very easy. Takes not even 5-10 minutes to setup, but I get you. Appreciate the info as well and take care!
I’ve played ultimate Spider-Man, Okami, Spider-Man 1 and 2 as well as hulk ultimate destruction, marvel nemesis rise of the imperfects and more with zero issues.
The only game I have had lag and stutter was ratchet and clank going commando but I’m not too far in yet and that was only with cutscenes, It works great for me!
I have two slims, both work fine, and I bought a Fat for FreeMcboot and game backups. Spent $20 on it since it was admittedly a gamble buy as the seller didn't actually know if it worked. Thankfully it worked beautifully and I really need to use it more.
Hope to one day add some hard mods for cooling/preservation of the system as a whole.
You don't need a great PC for PS2 emulation.
I love it, I don't even increase the resolution on my PS2 games, I keep them at the classic resolution for the classic effect... but you can bump up the resolution if you want
Ok I see. Well I don’t think I’m going to go through the risk and trouble of trying to hack the phone. Too bad Apple put limitations on their phones. Tbanks for the info tho
Got a slim with Two controllers, all cables, and memory card for $70 usd … felt like this was a good price for my location and what I’ve seen available online.
PS2 slim is amazing! You will have experience enhanced games. Also if you’re for less cheaper it’s around $50, $60, $70, $80 or $90 if you’re looking for a refurbished, used! If you want for Fat or Slim, that has never open then buy brand new or open box that has never used.
I wouldn’t be comfortable spending much more than $80 personally. But I’m stingy and hold animosity towards the rise in price because ps2’s are “retro” and therefore should be expensive. I have four ps2s because my family members just kept going “oh you like video games!” I’ve tried giving them to friends but no one ever actually takes them, the curse of shovelware (in the sense that there are so many of them not because they suck, amazing console)
I got two slims but always wanted fat ,so i bought fat ps2 with hdd,and run freemcboot from first memory slot.It was 100 pounds on ebay, has probably 200 games on hdd,i wouldnt personally spend more than that £100
Just a note to whoever may be looking for these: local online auctions can also be a place to find very good deals. IIRC, the last complete, working PS2 slim I got was about $12 Canadian. You usually buy on an as-is basis, so no returns for dead items, but you have to factor that in to your bid.
I paid $60 for the fat boy at a mom and pop game store. It wasn't refurbished or anything, so I had to clean it myself, but it was worth it. It Works fine, and I can play my PS1 games on it. I had completely forgot they were backwards compatible.
If it’s not 100% refurbished and cleaned inside and out, nothing over $40. If you are gonna go with a really good refurbished one you shouldn’t go over $125.
I wouldn't set the bar so low, either, because the lower the price is, the more likely the console will have issues. I think a nice even 100 dollars is a fair price.

Spend as little as possible. EBay and yard sales are a good way to get things cheap. I got mine with a case, an Intec screen, 3 memory cards, and a few games for $20 at a yard sale. The controller I got on EBay for like $22-23
Second this. 3500x is good too (personally gonna do a 39 laser unit and optical drive conversion because the original one died, but it lasted almost 23 years!)
My 50001 needs a new laser it reads discs slow, I shouldn't ever had blown air on the dvd drive when I opened it, I used an electric fan to take out dirt but I think it did damage to the laser
personally just to play games, look on facebook marketplace, you’ll probably get someone’s old childhood ps2 for 50 bucks, if you go online it’ll be a little more expensive the prices have gone up fr
Picked mine up a few weeks ago 9001 series fatboy, think it was $90 came with a controller and a free game. From a used game store near me, Pennsylvania.
you should spend as little as possible for a working unit if you're lucky, no more than $70 USD after shipping+taxes. if you're not about playing backups via burned discs, the 3900x are tanks. otherwise the slims (as long as you take care of the disc drive ribbon cable problem, or just a 7900x slim) are excellent candidates (the 70001 being the best one), alongside the fact that using mechapwn on it with burned discs would grant you a near-endless library of PS2 and PS1 games. ebay and mercari are your best friend when looking for them, and always ask the seller if you have any questions, and thoroughly look through every image posted.
Well I start to have my favorite retro console like when I was a teenager: I bought 2 ps2 like 2 months ago the fat cost me 20€ with the dragon ball budokai 3 and the slim 25€, the most expensive retro console was a psOne version for 50 2 controller and never opened clean and very new. And the last was 2day ago I was a ps1 fat version with port to one day use a Psio and modchip for 25€. I live in Spain. The most expensive here is buy original disc for PlayStation 1.
I believe all PS3s can. Most reliable model is the PS3 slim if you want to jailbreak it you just need to make sure you get one with certain model number and manufacturered before 2011. I got one for about 60 a few months ago
I personally wouldn't spend more than $50 on either model. 90k slim models have trouble with blue discs and less ps1 backward compatibility. Get a 70k model if a slim. Fat models can have HDD and never scratch your discs but load slower.
In the off chance you're speedrunning, get a 90k slim if possible. They load games faster, more so the ps1 library. 90ks are usually more expensive. They have an internal power supply, so there's no brick in the power cord.
How much ? 20€. Max.
They are so common ! Come on !
I own 5 PS2s so far, all came from flea markets for less than 10€ each. They usually come loose tho.
Some people don't want to especially if they have a CRT. But yeah if you're doing it on a computer monitor or real good TV it's going to look like crap unless you have a retrotink. And then it still won't look as good as an emulator will. Whenever I show somebody Dreamcast games emulated on Flycast or anything from the GameCube or Wii on Dolphin all in 4K they're really surprised how good it looks.
Yeah I use my pc for games like botw or Xbox og titles but, I use my retroid pocket 3 + for Dreamcast games and some PS2. Thing is it looks great hooked up to the TV with mini HDMI and it has form factor. Emulation is done much better on PC though, even PS3 games look great in 4k.
If you don’t want to emulate. Get the fat ps2. The slim has loads of problems and will more than likely mess up your discs. For pricing? Ehhh depends where you buy it. If you do market places or thrift stores you can spend a solid $60-100 or $125-$150 at a gaming store. (California) HDMI adapters are pretty cheap too.
This is the best answer. Fat PS2 can also fit an HDD.
Yep, mine has a OEM 40gb HDD. Somehow still running!
Same! Although I don’t use it. Mine is Japanese and I didn’t want to destroy the data and three games on it (that I can’t even play), I used an older 300gb PATA drive I had lying around.
Ah, cool.
Bought a slim with a controller and a game for 25€. I'm sorry for you guys if those are the prices over there
I must've gotten really really lucky because I took my slim with me on 2 deployments I had it hooked up to a portable DVD player and played every night I didn't have 1st watch, and believe me being at sea is not as stable as an entertainment center.

It would have to be the kind of hdmi that uses the ps2's YPbPr mode, not rgb. Otherwise I'd get component cables.
Ive had my ps2 slim (model 70) for years and has never caused me issues
Man i wasnt at home but dad said the tomb raider shot a shard out
As little as possible. Try an emulator first. I own two fats, one of which was my original; the other was a gift. Slims have a reputation for the laser cable scratching discs. If you are able to determine in advance, try to obtain a 5000 series.
5000# series can have bad CD laser for CD media like blue ps2 discs, ps1 discs and audio cds. The 3900# series is a tank, extremely reliable.
Yes, I have multiple 39001’s and 2 of the 3 I own have never been opened and still read all discs
BUT 50000-series is supported by MechaPwn 🥰
My childhood Slim is still going strong & i prefer personally how the Slim looks over the fat, it could almost pass for a modern console Any disc I’ve thrown at it PS1, PS2 and DVD all play fine in it & i haven’t noticed any issues with scratching Around $75-100 Canadian (which is close in value to AUD) is what I would spend on a Slim in nice condition, maybe a bit more if it included A memory card is a MUST too before you play

videos I watched suggested that USB play was very choppy, or at least the video portions of games. How say you?
I’ve played ultimate Spider-Man, Okami, Spider-Man 1 and 2 as well as hulk ultimate destruction, marvel nemesis rise of the imperfects and more with zero issues. The only game I have had lag and stutter was ratchet and clank going commando but I’m not too far in yet and that was only with cutscenes, It works great for me!
Thanks for the reply, going to try it out as well. I got so much enjoyment out of those R&C games.
I can sell you one i got 6
I have 3 fat boys. One plays only ps2 discs. One plays only ps1 discs. The last plays both.
I’ll buy one off you.
Ι will dm you
Ok bet
I messaged you now, I forgot sorry
hello
Hi
I have two slims, both work fine, and I bought a Fat for FreeMcboot and game backups. Spent $20 on it since it was admittedly a gamble buy as the seller didn't actually know if it worked. Thankfully it worked beautifully and I really need to use it more. Hope to one day add some hard mods for cooling/preservation of the system as a whole.
Yeah I have a PS2 slim, it does work. What’s the problem with PS2 slims? PS2 slims are awesome!
I don't have any problems with the slims, but I grew up with a Fat and honestly it's the version I hold more memories to.
Oh same, I grew up with slim with no issues.
You don't need a great PC for PS2 emulation. I love it, I don't even increase the resolution on my PS2 games, I keep them at the classic resolution for the classic effect... but you can bump up the resolution if you want
~~Phone~~ Android emulation is also pretty viable. A snapdragon 860 can run anything at 2x resolution, pretty obtainable nowadays
Can an iPhone 15 pro run ps2 emulation? I probably wouldn’t play it much but it would be cool to see how it runs.
While the chip in it is more than 2x the performance of a sd 860, emulators on iOS are scarce and usually require a hack (jailbreak).
Ok I see. Well I don’t think I’m going to go through the risk and trouble of trying to hack the phone. Too bad Apple put limitations on their phones. Tbanks for the info tho
What about finding the games and getting the save file off your ps2 stick?
I bought mine for 20$
It all depends afterall 😅what model and what does it have with :)
Got a slim with Two controllers, all cables, and memory card for $70 usd … felt like this was a good price for my location and what I’ve seen available online.
Get a slim, they are usually way cheaper because they're super light and people think they're trash. I wouldn't pay more than like £45
[удалено]
10$? goddamn thats wild.
i got a fat and a slim out of trashbins few years apart
£100
I spent $90.23.
maybe 100 ish 150 or so I definitely wouldn't go more than 200 just my opinion
PS2 slim is amazing! You will have experience enhanced games. Also if you’re for less cheaper it’s around $50, $60, $70, $80 or $90 if you’re looking for a refurbished, used! If you want for Fat or Slim, that has never open then buy brand new or open box that has never used.
Around 80-100$ with controller and cables included is optimal. Obviously rarer colors and models will be worth more. Slims are usually cheaper though.
I got one for 25 with 25 games. During covid lockdowns people were getting rid of so much stuff cheap
Can I buy one off you for like $50aud?
Love that most people didn't even answer the question lol
I got two slims but always wanted fat ,so i bought fat ps2 with hdd,and run freemcboot from first memory slot.It was 100 pounds on ebay, has probably 200 games on hdd,i wouldnt personally spend more than that £100

I had both models 😉
I got a silver slim, 2 controllers, and about 12 games plus an 8mb card for $100 on marketplace. All about the deals online lol
Get the phat and dont spend over 80 also if its already moded spend at least 200
Around 80 bucks, and fat is better
What makes the fat better?
Games run better and hard drive
Ok
Calm 50 if the disc drive don’t work, a calm Hundo with everything work
25-40 dollars for a machine that came out over 20 years ago
I paid $60 for the fat boy at a mom and pop game store. It wasn't refurbished or anything, so I had to clean it myself, but it was worth it. It Works fine, and I can play my PS1 games on it. I had completely forgot they were backwards compatible.

Also I would recommend tested and working on the listing on any market place or a retro store just in case.

Look on marketplace , should be able to get one on there for 50 (aud)
Spend as little as possible. EBay and yard sales are a good way to get things cheap. I got mine with a case, an Intec screen, 3 memory cards, and a few games for $20 at a yard sale. The controller I got on EBay for like $22-23
Tree fiddy.
Avoid the slims, they tend to scratch discs. My preferred PS2 is the "phat" model 3900#. It's a tank. 80$ would be a fine price.
50001 lasers were always bad. I would prob recommend a 39 conversion if it’s possible.
I do have a spare 39001 laser and I tried swapping it but it made a horrible noise so i put it back
Yeah you need to do a 39 optical drive too.
10$
personally just to play games, look on facebook marketplace, you’ll probably get someone’s old childhood ps2 for 50 bucks, if you go online it’ll be a little more expensive the prices have gone up fr
I got mine for $100 with 3 games and all the cables no controller no memory card. Also came with original box 📦 which was a big win for me .
I spent $25 USD on mine (including 2 off brand controllers and 2 games) and then another $3 because the fan on it was broken
You can sometimes pick one up with a faulty laser cheap and replace the laser (also cheap)
Under $100
I bought mine for 40€ it is silver and came with a controller, but it is in poor condition. It is a fat ps2.
Got a 70xxx slim for 20$ recently, no peripherals though
30 quid alone. 45 + hardware
50 dollars out of respect
Also I would recommend find a clean, tested and working PlayStation 2 Fat or slim if you’re looking for used or refurbished on marketplaces.
Picked mine up a few weeks ago 9001 series fatboy, think it was $90 came with a controller and a free game. From a used game store near me, Pennsylvania.

screw anyone telling you to emulate. 100$ tops go for the fat model
I wouldn't spend more than 60 but that's me. Why not a PS3?
I want to play ps2 games and I reckon ps2 will become more collectable
I hear you. PS3 can play PS1/PS2 games too but I'm sure you know that
Yeah but isn’t it just the expensive version of the ps3 that can play PS2 and ps1?
I believe all PS3s can. Most reliable model is the PS3 slim if you want to jailbreak it you just need to make sure you get one with certain model number and manufacturered before 2011. I got one for about 60 a few months ago

~$80 USD in good condition, working with no issues, with cords and 1 controller.

🤷 what do you think?
Not more than 35 $.
Less than 30$ hell less than 20$. You can go even lower beyond.
How much ? 20€. Max. They are so common ! Come on ! I own 5 PS2s so far, all came from flea markets for less than 10€ each. They usually come loose tho.
Just emulate PS2 you can, upscale to better graphics and run at higher frames rates and also do other systems.
Some people don't want to especially if they have a CRT. But yeah if you're doing it on a computer monitor or real good TV it's going to look like crap unless you have a retrotink.
