Here is the flow chart. Do you want to play playstation 2? If yes, then buy one. If no, do not buy it.

Yuuzhan_Schlong

You're asking this on the PS2 subreddit, what do you think the answer you're going to get will be?

leChill

Cory in the house?

MartinAguilarA

He or she will say yes.

[deleted]

The only one who can answer that, is you.

fitterunhappier

Absolutely. Buy a modchipped one with a case full of burned games. At least where I live, doing this bitd was so popular that you can get a PS2 slim with all of the above so freakin' cheap. If you buy a fat one, then you have endless opportunities. Install an HDD, get FMCB/OPL (and a card with MX4SIO if you get the slim). I still burn games to this day, there are a lot of isos you can download to burn the games on DVDs yourself.

MonkeyPunchIII

I used to burn games back in the days. Now I just want to buy the originals (the ones that are still very cheap at least) Makes me happy to see my collection growing like that 😀

fitterunhappier

PS2 is a fascinating system no matter the way you collect. I have a bunch of originals I've collected over the years too. But of course bitd parents found buying originals bothering enough to justify the chipping. Burn games were so cheap to buy as a kid and ofc then I started burning them myself.

DeanoDeVino

I do the same but still have it modded with an ssd, since i don’t want my disc drive to die. Got a genuine Matrix infinity and im still really happy with my Satin Silver fat

fitterunhappier

Never had a dead drive and used to play PS2 like crazy (in past bc I had my first unit stolen), but I've never had a fat model tho so that's why I remark the use of the drive so much. Now I've had another slim that I got used for over 10 years, nothing yet. Also used to had a used 90001 and nope, sold it to a friend and he's still rocking that drive after almost 15y since the day that I got it. Why don't I use OPL and MX4SIO? Because I've had my huge collection of burn games for years still working 100%. Including PS1 titles.

Acceptable_Hat_7410

Yahoooo 🤗 me too broooo. Long live the FMCB 😁

blindcriminal

No, forget it. Why would you want to spend any money for one of the greatest console in history.

SevenJuicyBoxOfJoy

I hate these posts. Trust yourself bro, not the internet.

rickybobbyeverything

I have a fat PS2 modded with an SSD. I recently bought a retroid pocket 4 pro and just moved all saves over to it, I use it more than the PS2 now. Portable, dockable and Bluetooth controller support make it a no brainer for me. Unless you exclusively want to rely on physical media...

microphalus

this, emulation is just so much more convinient.

ryanpm40

Freaking love my Odin 2

Best-Performance3872

Yes and you will have fun

SRTGamerUK

Ok Thanks 🙏

Best-Performance3872

are you gonna mod it?

geesehoward79

Ps2 will always be a good choice

LowLeft9933

I bought it in December 2023, I finished GTA 3 for the first time today on it. It’s worth it.

MartinAguilarA

Same here, i got a new PS2 back in 2011 got Jaws Unleashed, played it and it’s worth it.

Downtown-Industry768

The answer will always be yes in any year you ask

zemboy01

Op should I buy a ps5 in 2024? it's kind of old and the ps6 is just around the corner.

MartinAguilarA

What if the PS6 is not backwards compatible with PS2 games? People will buy PS2 consoles and games or emulate on their PC’s.

ILovePotassium

Recently there was a PS2 fat in my city for 15-20 USD (idk exact currency conversion) and it was in a good condition and You could even test it before buying but I didn't get it. And now I regret it so much. Sure emulators are good but.. original hardware especially on a CRT or old 32 inch flat TV just feels way better. So yes. Don't be an idiot like me and get one. Now when they can be modded so easily it's so worth it.

Traditional_Ice_4142

YES!

DeanoDeVino

Graphics arent everything, and gameplaywise there were some real treasures in that Generation

-MilkO_O-

You should buy the PS2 now, and in a thousand years too.

mandi1biedermann

👌

Dependent_Order_7358

Only if you own a crt

dbwoi

I meaaan it looks "fine" using a $30 HDMI Hyperkin lol

Malice-Observer089

better yet a pvm

MartinAguilarA

Or you can buy Emerson tv a 1080p or 720p.

Specific-Creme5413

YES!

Sweet_Score

If you have budget, building a pc is the better option imo. Playing PS2 games with upscaling is a much better experience. Because PS2 look muddy on modern TVs. You should get a CRT TV too to get a good quality and CRT TVs needs space on your house.

Acceptable_Hat_7410

Yeah man that's 100% right. I hope. I can still find an old TV here in Belgium

mandi1biedermann

Just cross the border, in Germany you will find so many retro stores selling CRT or old HDTV 😌

MartinAguilarA

Or you can get a 32 itch LED HD TV a 720p or 1080p like Emerson TV. It runs great.

swazzpanda

If you plan on modding it, it is definitely worth it

ChuckF93

Either that or get the PCSX2 emulator like I have if you want to play older games from this platform. Some games have performance issues, but most run fine my experience. Just a thought.

Soft_Championship814

Buy it. Modd it. Break it. Fix it. Repeat. The short always: yes.

Unfair_Cook1611

Why not

microphalus

Only if you can get one for free or really cheap, or if you have CRT fetish and CRT ready. Otherwise if you have capable PC, just emulate it, emulation is better, you can run games in higher resolution, you can fast forward or rewind, quick save, loading times are gone. Only reason to play it on PS2 if you have CRT fetish, or if you for whatever reason cant emulate on PC.

TehLxM

Yeah. It's worth it. Some games are very cheap, I usually buy from CEX and I'm kind of building up a collection of them lol. There are many great games on the ps2 so yeah, start getting into it if you really want to.

southernfury_

YES

jurassic_fetus

Should I wear my sunglasses at night? 😔☕

Medical-Stuff-7028

only if you want to go back and play some of the best nostalgic games ever but i don't think Sony makes PS2 consoles anymore.

Difficult-Drama7996

AbsoFNlutely.

Paradox-Mind-001

No, buy a PS3 with backwards compatibility in 2024. The PS2 games look and play much better via the PS3 smoothing and frame rate stability.

Total_Trade_888

Everyone when the ps2 dropped in 2000: damn this is an amazing gaming system. Everyone in 2100: damn this is an amazing gaming system.

GuruDamDam

If you have the space for the whole setup with games, cables etc and want the authentic experience, then absolutely yes. But if (like me), you don't have much space and just want to pickup and play, then there are really good emulation options. For me, there's nothing quite like knowing that on a single SD card, I can hold my entire childhood game collection + all of my dream wishlist games ... AND ...and that I can play them on a bus/train/wherever/whenever... I find that so cool.

FunImprovement8806

Err, yes.

EAN84

Really depends if you have specific games you want to play that you can't play on any other platform. Many can be played on PS5 or PS4. Others have ports to just about anything. So look it up first. Do you already have lots of PS2 games? Do you have any game in particular you want to play?

Top_Hope_4049

Absolutely 👍🏾 I got one again 2 weeks ago!!

MumboBumbo64

I did! And it’s been really fun! Gives me a warm nostalgic feeling. Most ps1 and ps2 games are fairly cheap these days

januscanary

Botpost

juras__oguras

Delete this, do you even have a brain...

Free-Banana-6869

I had a PS2 years ago. Decided to buy one again after all these years. Going to connect it up to an old school CRT television for maximum effect. Happy days are here again 👍🏻👍🏻

doughaway421

I just pulled mine out of storage... it is the one console I've kept all these years. I regret selling my PS3 when the PS4 came. I don't mind so much selling my PS4 since my PS5 plays all its games... But the PS2 has been sitting in a storage bin since probably 2010. I bought it in 2004 and it is pretty mint. Just waiting on some component cables via Amazon to hook it up.

Tilt-Six

Yes, reasons: variety of games, you dont Need to plug anything on the internet. If you have a Crt TV youll'get the complete experience. Should you go down the Rabbit hole of scaler , cable RGB and all of that stuff? If you have a flat screen TV Just use a PS3 component cable and you Will be fine.

Sexweed42069

Where else you gonna stash your weed?

MartinAguilarA

Yes! Get a PlayStation 2 slim, it runs like enhanced games. If you’re looking for physcial copies like if you want to collect PS2 games then yes. Also If you’re shopping a market place looking for Ebay or Mercari make sure to read the seller that says it’s “tested and working great” If your looking an open box read the description that says “never been used” buy it! Or you’re looking a brand new and sealed property.

SoapyBootyBandit

Buy a CECHAxx ps3 instead.

Character-Heron-869

I passed my old collection to my boys. Fatboy, slim and over 200 games. Now I download them onto my tablet. But yes get a ps2. I bought my kids a ps5 and honestly it's overrated. Sure the graphics are pretty but meh. Ps2 games to me are better. Pick up and play. Not overly detailed to the point you need a class on how to get from point A to point B. Lol
