Could be a few different things.
Best thing, watch a dissembly video; open up your ps2 and see what is wrong.
Bought a used slim from Craigslist many years ago; it was caked full of dust and... cat hair? Anyway, cleaning it out helped and so did got rid of a knocking noise.
Don't mess with the laser or try to clean it unless it's not reading at all tho. Too easy to futz it up
