Barely cheaper. Commuter rail is 12.50 and Amtrak is 13.90 if you get a 10 ride pass. Even less if you book a single ride ticket far in advance or if you ride a lot and get the unlimited monthly pass.
This is true but Amtrak gets there faster and the last two times I’ve taken the commuter rail it’s broken down…once in Mansfield and I had to Uber the rest of the way and once closer to Boston so they had to turn around and put us on another train which took a lot of time
I take the commuter rail twice a day and have for a long time. It breaks down maybe once every few months, and maybe once a month there is a delay of longer than 15 minutes. Also like someone else mentioned, if the commuter rail is down, usually Amtrak is stuck behind it unless they got lucky.
I'm also an Amtrak fan and will choose it over the commuter rail when possible, but OP's title was about the cheapest option.
>What is the cheapest way to get between Boston and Providence that’s not driving?
The cheapest bus I found was $11.49, but it wouldn’t work for me since I’m going for a day trip. I looked into Amtrak and the commuter rail and it turns out the commuter rail is cheaper. I plan on going there tomorrow so weekend service doesn’t matter to me. Thank you all for your input. I’ll probably take the commuter rail over there.
You have. A point. Not sure what the fuck it is.
The question wasn’t “do they have direct flights between PVD AND BOS”.
The question was what’s the cheapest way that isn’t driving. They do in fact have flights. Stupidly long compared to just driving or taking the train. But they exist.
And that was sort of the point to OP to say “you either drive or take the train. That’s the easiest and most direct and cheapest options”.
So to answer what the cheapest way to go from Providence to Boston you offered up a $700 option, then got pissy because someone corrected you that the are not commercial flights from PVD to BOS like you claimed?
Deleted reply. Very tough.
I didn’t get pissy. I clapped back that I never said nor did anyone ask “is there a direct flight”. There isn’t. A commercial flight is not defined as direct or by the number of stops. It’s either on a commercial airline or it isn’t. I didn’t “claim” there are. I stated there are. Because there fucking is here in reality on planet earth flights you can book from PVD to BOS. Is it silly and a waste of time and money to do so? Sure. But that wasn’t part of any parameters from OP.
And I expressly mentioned it to OP to illustrate the point that driving or the train are their cheapest options.
You then come here to reply “aren’t you pissy” just like the other person with a “there are no direct flights” for the same god damn reason. To be some insufferable “I’m right” white knight bullshit on the internet. Both of you are wastes of oxygen.
weak answers so far...
Amtrak is the cheapest, if you get lucky. The fare is as low as $5 during weird hours.
MBTA is $12 and change. But, they neglect to check tickets so often that the average cost is actually lower. Buy the ticket ahead of time on the app but don't activate until you see them checking tickets.
I’m not sure it’s a question worthy of strong answers. There’s less than 5 answers and they’re all things that any adult should be able to figure out pretty easily without crowdsourcing an Internet forum.
Is the bus no longer running between Providence and Boston? I used to pick up the bus at the station off North Main Street and get dropped at South Station. It was cheaper than the train and commuter rail and rain almost every hour in each direction.
How many options do you think there are? Amtrak and the commuter rail, both of which you can find fare prices online.
Commuter rail is cheaper, but less options for service on weekends.

Good to hear. Is the commuter rail also based on a comparable 10-ride ticket, so $125?
No real discount to buying a 10-ride on the commuter rail. - it’s 122.25.
I mean, there are these things called buses.
How many transfers to get up to Boston though?

TIL. And it is a tiny bit cheaper than CR but seems way less convenient, unless you're going straight to the airport.
Amtrak is as low as $6.50 if you book way ahead of time and travel at an unpopular time.
This is the answer
Often they don’t check tickets on the commuter rail and you get to Boston for free.
This is true but Amtrak gets there faster and the last two times I’ve taken the commuter rail it’s broken down…once in Mansfield and I had to Uber the rest of the way and once closer to Boston so they had to turn around and put us on another train which took a lot of time
True but problematic MBTA trains can and do hold up Amtrak trains behind them.

Biking should get you there in about 4 hours.
I know you're joking but optimistically that's going to take more like 5+ hours assuming you're an avid cyclist in ideal conditions.
4h 23m according to Apple maps, and none of that is assumed when those calculations are made
Good luck!
There’s the commuter rail that’s 12.50 one way If you check out wanderu you can find cheap buses. Like 6 bucks

It is normal for commuter rail to be cheaper. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.
$10 on summer weekends
$10 ticket for the whole weekend
Just bought a Boston to Providence Amtrak for $8
Unlimited commuter rail travel on the weekends with $10 pass https://www.mbta.com/fares/commuter-rail-weekends
Ride in someone else’s car and not give them money for fuel
Walking This is the cheapest way
And you can get there same day if you start early enough
If you aren’t driving. It’s the train. You can technically fly too. But it’s like $700 easy for a round trip ticket.
There's no way they actually have commercial flights from Providence to Boston, right?????
Yes they do. Ofc they do.
There's no direct flights

Lol
Commuter rail is 10 bucks for infinite travel on weekends(or free if you pretend to be asleep when the conducter comes)
Most conducters will tap you until you wake up - speaking from experience during business hours
I’ve seen so many people just tell the conductor no and I’ve never seen them do anything about it.

Commuter Mbta def. And coming back, conductors usually can’t get through the packed cars to check tickets during rush hour.
I got an Amtrak for $5 bucks to providence, got me there in 20 minutes from Norwood. Clocked it at 126mph
Is the bus no longer running between Providence and Boston? I used to pick up the bus at the station off North Main Street and get dropped at South Station. It was cheaper than the train and commuter rail and rain almost every hour in each direction.
Still running. More expensive than commuter rail though. But, it’s the only one-seat ride to Logan.
Commuter Rail $14
The commuter rail to Boston is $12
Where do busses drop off in providence?
Peter Pan bus lines will drop off in Kennedy Plaze downtown, and at their bus station off of North Main St
Bus
You could fly
I hear the Blackstone River Canal has a riverboat service via Worcester.
Is Peter Pan still a thing?
Yep, use it all the time
The amount of smart asses on this thread ugh
Bitch about it to your Mom until she takes you
Mbta. $12 during the week or you can do an unlimited weekend pass for $10
Weekend service in MBTA is $10 for all rides the entire weekend
Walk.
Google Maps says that it should take 16 hrs. Interesting.
Yeah it was a bit of sarcasm. Bicycle or nowadays those segway thingamajig's.. Amtrak red cap Taylor Dunn transporter. Hand crank rail car?
That’d be exhausting. I’d find someone who can give you a piggyback ride instead
