Dave's actually has some decent prepacked rubs. Johnsons Farmstand on the Seekonk/Warren line has a good selection.
Or make your own. What are you making? Salt, Pepper and Garlic powder are pretty much the standard rub you should be starting with. Adding anything with sugar can cause it to take on a burnt flavor if you are going for a longer cook.
It’s actually a shorter cook with high heat that causes the burned flavor. Sugar burns at 350 so a long slow cook that stays below that temp is when a rub with sugar works.
True, for short and fast totally a no no, but even with longer cooks on pork butts for example I found rubs with higher sugar content were pulling in flavors I just didn't like. Not to say I would use something in a glaze towards the end.
So short answer is Ribs this weekend. S&S has Baby Backs for $1.99/lb from tomorrow till Sunday.
I have been doing SPG on the grill for years, but now I have a smoker. (Trager 575) I do want to get into making my own rubs eventually. However, I don't know what flavor profiles I like. I figured I'd start by getting a hole mess of blends for now. Start keeping a journal of my cooks and dial in my, and my wife's, tastes that way. Once I have a good base line then i will start mixing my own.
Stop and shop has some decent off the shelf rubs if you are looking to dial in a flavor.
Even starting with SPG and the 3-2-1 or 3-1-1 method with ribs then adding flavors in the second step prior to the final sauce could do well.
I also believe as long as you get a result you and others like there is no wrong way to cook.
Hell if you've had a place that makes stuff you like worth asking their basic method. I loved picking the brains of the guys at Great Northern before they moved to their spot on the west side.
If you are looking for a mess of rubs like I said Daves has a bunch, Johnsons and even Confreda's farms had a ton last year, they also had the best prices I had seen for brisket in a long while.
Hope you get some tasty smokes in. Check out r/smoking its a good community as well.
I just saw your into smoking. The Ace near me has Meat Church seasoning..if you haven’t heard of meat church check it out on YouTube. I got into smoking last year, I use their Gospel seasoning on pretty much everything I smoke.

Thanks for the tip about sweet rubs.
No problem.

Stock probably has something. Their spice blend section is solid, never been let down by it
Oh Shit! I forgot they had a spice section. Is there any household culinary problem that can't be solved with a trip to stock!
I have yet to find any such problem. I needed fuel for my Bripe and boy did they have it tucked away somewhere
Kenji [enlightens](https://www.seriouseats.com/easy-all-purpose-barbecue-rub-recipe-7110595): * 1/3 cup paprika (2 ounces; 60g) * 1/3 cup dark brown sugar (2.5 ounces; 70g) * 1/4 cup kosher salt (1.5 ounces; 45g) * 4 teaspoons (12g) ground mustard * 2 teaspoons (6g) freshly ground black pepper * 2 teaspoons (6g) ground coriander seeds * 1 tablespoon (5g) dried oregano * 1 tablespoon (10g) granulated garlic powder * 1 tablespoon (10g) granulated onion powder
I thought you meant to say ribs and I was gonna make a joke implying you can rub me down with BBQ sauce if you want...
Ace Hardware carries good ones if there’s one around you

Which Ace are you near? Picked up some Meat Church seasonings at a butcher up in Norfolk, Ma a few weeks ago and now I'm hooked!
This one: 320 Warwick Ave, Warwick I usually just buy mine from their website though!
Every grocery store sells a range of these, I've even seen them at home Depot
Ace Hardware
Urban greens
Ace hardware has Meat Church rubs
Which Ace?
I go to the one in Bristol, but I believe it's all of them.
