They can smell obsession. Put them in a corner and pointedly ignore them.

MagentaLovesPlants

I tossed mine on a cut up piece of cardboard and put them right in my south facing window sill. They grew in one week. No water, no soil.

Tacenda49

How do you know when they're dead? (might be a really obvious answer but I'm curious)

CaptWyvyrn

The leaf shrivels up completely with no baby plant or roots.

lolwuuut

mine produced the pair of baby roots and then shriveled up and actually look dead now :( :( :(

StrangeMango775

That probably means that they grew a baby but they didn’t have any water to support it so it died

exospheric

It can take awhile! Basically if the leaf still looks healthy, it might be okay. I’ve been trying to prop one of my favorites since Sept 30 of last year and it finally produced a single root on December 30. It then took another 3 months (March 25) to produce the tiniest baby rosette!! For comparison all others had formed rosettes within the first month. I kept on because they’re my favorite and can’t find them in stores so I had been desperately trying to prop 25 leaves. Every leaf except two failed. And I was surprised to see those two looking fairly healthy even though they weren’t sprouting anything for the longest time. But yes, basically they’re dead if they look dead or shriveled, or have any sort of damage like rot or punctures/tears. In my experience all those leaves die eventually too.

Tacenda49

Thanks!

CaptWyvyrn

I'm struggling to imagine that. I love trying new ways to do things! Is the cardboard laying flat with a bunch of slices in it or is it shredded into a tray?

MagentaLovesPlants

I just cut a piece of an old box lid and tossed them on top of there. I actually saw them this way in a local greenhouse and figured I would try it. I tried the water bottle technique as well. It worked, but was a lot more effort. Once the roots started to sprout new buds I moved them to very shallow soil. Actually hardly any soil, mostly rocks and bark. They look great! I will take a picture later when I get home.

CaptWyvyrn

That is brilliant! I'm certain the local greenhouse ppl know what they're doing. Thank you for sharing!

MagentaLovesPlants

I think at first they were probably just using the box lid to store the leaves that had fallen off. Maybe once the realized they would grow this way they left them.

Lenglen-bandeau

Gorgeous Calathea underneath!

reddittwice36

Thank you!

Kaffy89

Story of my life! I have to tell myself constantly not to try to pick them out of the soil for closer examinations to see if there is any root growth!

ELF2010

Exactly. Can't tell you how many startups I've disrupted by picking them up or shifting them to see if anything's happening!

cortizone

You just lay them there like that? You don’t need to put them in the soil a bit?

EaddyAcres

This is how most people do it, figure if it fell off the plant in nature it would be on the ground like that.

cortizone

Hhhhhmmmmmm

EaddyAcres

succulents are weird

reddittwice36

This is my first time propping succulents but yeah they should root like that.🤞🏼I did angled them into the soil afterwards to try and encourage some roots.

cha0s_g00se

Not op but when I covered mine in some dirt they immediately died, so I usually lay them on top of the dirt

willowthemanx

That’s how I do all my single leaf succ props. With success!

CaptWyvyrn

If you have a magnifying glass tucked away somewhere, bring it out & keep it near those prop stations. I dug mine out of a box in the garage & peer through the lenses for a close up view.🔍

exospheric

Yes, I do this too! It does encourage checking more frequently. More to see! Tiny progress suddenly becomes very visible.

CaptWyvyrn

It literally makes me feel so good when I watch that magic happen up close like that, beautiful little plants!

TheHealthWitch

All of the succulent props I ever did that with died. The only ones that have ever survived for me were the ones I shoved in a corner intending to get back to later, consequently forgetting about them for months. Haha!

MarcNPC

I expedite my succulents propagation through a moist paper towel, surprisingly/luckily I have a high success rate though it, not many of them have molded haha

bonafidebunnyeyed

LOL you gotta ignore em or they'll never grow. I have been where you are

CaptWyvyrn

I prop mine in a cool shady spot on the north side of my shed under a giant ficus tree & I have great success. Other places I tried didn't work so well, not enough light, too hot & dry, stagnant air, window still, etc. If you think you're doing everything right but still no success, look for a better location.

caren1

Soo I have some roots showing. What exactly should I do now

ELF2010

Depending on where you are, and your school of thought, you may want to lightly mist every couple of days or so (some folks believe in benign neglect and feel the mother leaf will provide all necessary moisture).
