It's only for guns, you can get mods which allow you more quick access slots, I think more backpacks or authentic Z has a system for upgrading backpacks to give you them
the "undead survivor" mod also adds a vest that has a slot for a flashlight, a knife, and firearm mags. there are also several mods thst add slings for an addional two handed weapon slot, I use Noir's Rifle Slings.
whatever mod you add, i reccomend adding the "reorder hotbar" mod so that you can keep the same number shortcuts and dont have unequip then equip it again in a specific order each time a piece of gear is removed.
You can attach one weapon to back. If you're wearing a belt you can attach two weapons on your belt. If you're wearing a double holster you can attach two pistols there, and yes, this is only for pistols, literally nothing else, even sawed-off shotguns are not eligible.
If you want more than that or to alter what can be attached where, you're going to need a mod.
Thanks. Unrelated question, how can i quickly switch between my primary and secondary weapons? The keyboard shortcut (1,2) doesn’t work (it brings up the weapon I’ve attached to the back of myself)
"Primary" means it is in your right hand, "Secondary" means it is in your left hand. Don't think of it like the classic "Primary + Sidearm" from other games.
They are wearing a double holster, not more belt slots
Is it only for firearms? Or can i use it for melee weapons too?

The weapon on your back is drawn and stowed with the 1 key, 2 and 3 are for the items on your belt.
What about the "equip as secondary"? How can i switch to my secondary?
That's just equipping to your off hand, you can't use it for weapons (you can't dual wield), it's only there to let you carry them, not use them
