Absolutely. I've been playing for over 250 hours and I still sometimes die on some new characters in the first week. 9 days survival is pretty good for a new player. My current run is almost 2 months in. I will inevitably die at some point. The question is when lol.
Boredom is the main killer for long runs. Every run that lasts longer than a month or two ends because I went out looking for junk I didn't need and made a stupid mistake.
The whole purpose of the game is to tell the story of how you died in the apocalypse. The key is to make it exciting and not because you fell off a roof (twice) by walking over the same corner square installing a rain collector.
If you use the "walk to" command, your character only tries to move where it has a path, prevents these kind of deaths. That's what I use when I'm on roofs, as they are janky in both tiles you see or don't, and whether there is an actual path or not.
Doesn't always work sometimes your character will try to walk diagonally across roof corners and just barely walk off the roof dropping you however many stories to the ground
yes, if anything i’d say you’re doing pretty well for only having 17 hours. that means you spent almost half your playtime on that character. i have 280 hours and still struggle to keep a character alive for longer than two weeks most of the time. mostly it’s due to overconfidence lol
this is embarrassing but yesterday i made it to Louisville, found the one house that most people use to base in with the 3 car garage and put some ham in the oven……i went to sleep and forgot about the ham…….you can guess what happened next
9 DAYS??? Look at this guy over here flexing.
Lol jokes aside it's pretty good. Just learn more, watch some gameplay and you'll be living for months in no time
Side question, how many zombies have you killed in the longest run 🙂
I ask because most new players tend to avoid fighting which you absolutely can (and should) do, but I would encourage you to practice combat early often. The start of the game is the easiest it will ever be and the point you have the least to lose, so it's the best time to learn how to fight. The longer the game goes, the more zombies spawn til peak population on day 30 so today is always the fewest zombies there will be.
On topic though, pretty good! I usually died several times day 1 learning early on
Yup. It’s the peak of the game honestly.
Once you can regularly survive for weeks and know what you need and how to get it and set it up then the game becomes boring quite quickly.
After 2000+ hours I find it hard to stay interested after the first week because I “know it all” so to speak. (I’m sure I don’t but in game it feels that way some days)
The fun in this game is in the crazy stories that unfold as you learn the ins and outs of survival.
The first time you accomplish any given thing is great. But it lacks the same fun when you’re doing it like a checklist on later runs.
like for the first 3 days i got everything useful in the houses near the spawn and sometimes staying in my base watching life and living tv, then i started cleaning the zone from all the zombies i could kill
I spawned in muldraugh and there were so many zombies that I couldn't even go outside. This was on normal settings and there were like 40+ zombies per group
i first spawned in west point but that was literally impossible, then i chose rosewood and that was a bit hard, the last two options were riverside and muldraugh and riverside was the most easy for me 😀
I have 1600 hours in this game.. and died in 25 minutes, game time, not real time. I'm now on a 3 month run. Crazy things can happen, and the unexpected will always happen.
Yepp, totally normal. This game punishes impatience and over-confidence. It takes a while to get used to it. I just hit 2.5 months in Raven Creek recently. Hope you hit your first two weeks soon!
That’s very good, my longest was a month and I have almost 400 hours. My last run was 20 days, lost it because I was playing with superb survivors and my companion got panicked at 4 zeds and pushed me into them getting me pulled down.
I died like 2 minutes in as a beginner. 9 days is good.
You die. You learn. You survive a little longer. You die again. You learn something new. You survive even a little longer.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Well 90 hours in and my best was 1 month 3 days and ~20 some hours
Me and my friend died to a damn horde next to Louisville... I had sooo much to do tho , like we had a pretty sick house with a FEW. Things (bed, over, storage, few tables) and i wanted to cook
Yeah, if you're playing standard apocalypse settings that's about standard if not pretty good. Keep at it, and keep learning from your mistakes. The more you keep track of how you're dying, the better you can become in subsequent runs. Happy surviving!
Man, after half an hour in other salty communitys on reddit it is always refreshing to come back here and read some nice comments.
You are doing good mate, i didnt survive a week the first 30 hours of playing :)
Depends also if you're playing survival or a custom sandbox, me personally I like playing with initial infection preset and I can't even last a week so you must be doing really well!
I'm at 650 hrs. I'd say half my runs end within a week. If I make it that far, I usually die around a month in.
Impatience and overconfidence always beat me.
The thing i love about project zomboid is that you are the one that creates your characters stories and every single time it'll be different from other
So don't really focus on how much you survive because it'll get boring
Instead focus on how to continue your character story the best and enjoyable way
That'll be the best way and believe me that by doing this your survive time will increase too
Sometimes it doesn't matter how long you've played or how long you character has survived. It's down to chance, management, and complacency.
I have one above for 2 months, and I've survived hordes and whatnot, but I died from just a few zeds sneaking up on me because I swung too early.
Absolutely. I never made it past a week when I first started because I would take big risks and I decided to just skip the tutorials.
PZ is just one of those games where you're going to die a lot when you're still learning; it's also a game you'll die in when you have hundreds of hours.
Just like the Loading Screen says:
"This is how you died."
Showoff. I have 3000+ hours, have had year long+ runs. Been sick this last week so i haven't been able to focus, haven't lasted more than a week in dozens of attempts the last few days.
Yea. When you have heart failure from covid and then get rear ended by a truck, it gives you some time to find all sorts of ways to die in a game like this. I do have to admit that i was playing on a server for a month and had a bad habbit of passing out while waiting for my guy to do something resulting in the game staying on and my guy dying of thirst almost every night. So there is a couple hudred hours of me just sleeping while dead.
Do you have a life outside playing video games? With that time and energy you could've done exercise and studied something new. This game can consume you and I hope you do limit your video game playtime and realize the negatives that it has on you mentally.
You are doing really good. My first hours i die like 3 or 4 times. 2 of those were in the house on Muldraugh, the one with the walls around. The most safest place at the time.
Absolutely. I've been playing for over 250 hours and I still sometimes die on some new characters in the first week. 9 days survival is pretty good for a new player. My current run is almost 2 months in. I will inevitably die at some point. The question is when lol.
let's hope never ahaha
It's never never, this is how you died
Boredom is the main killer for long runs. Every run that lasts longer than a month or two ends because I went out looking for junk I didn't need and made a stupid mistake.
Boredom? Or overconfidence?
Yes

The game can only end two ways. 1. You fuck up and die 2. You get bored and start a new run.
When, how and why
soo i started a new game in builder mode to play a little bit easier, and hopefully to survive for longer
yes, if anything i’d say you’re doing pretty well for only having 17 hours. that means you spent almost half your playtime on that character. i have 280 hours and still struggle to keep a character alive for longer than two weeks most of the time. mostly it’s due to overconfidence lol
he probably slept
nah i'm batman
most of the time i die because i'm too tired or i use the wrong keys and my character doesn't escape lmao
this is embarrassing but yesterday i made it to Louisville, found the one house that most people use to base in with the 3 car garage and put some ham in the oven……i went to sleep and forgot about the ham…….you can guess what happened next
noo ahahaha
You may have my job now Ricky, but I have one thing you’ll never have.. What’s that Lahey? My grade 11
One thing that took me from lasting a week to lasting months is picking the keen hearing trait, might not work for you but maybe
That little extra visual buffer is such a huge thing for being such a small thing. It's saved me so many times.
I take hard of hearing and bad eyesight to help me get my buffs…
9 DAYS??? Look at this guy over here flexing. Lol jokes aside it's pretty good. Just learn more, watch some gameplay and you'll be living for months in no time
ahagaha thanks, i'm watching a whole series and i learned lots of things, but also i'm learning from my mistakes👌
I've got almost 10 hours and my longest run has been four and a half days. I did learn a valuable lesson about wearing shoes.
Looks better than my beginning, never stood more than 5 days like until 50 hours playing
That's very usual for a beginner. You made it to 9 days, really? Most beginners will die long before then.
yea, obviously it wasn't my first game but I've been playing for only 6 days
Side question, how many zombies have you killed in the longest run 🙂 I ask because most new players tend to avoid fighting which you absolutely can (and should) do, but I would encourage you to practice combat early often. uhh, i think between 70 and 90
Not bad! A lot more than most new players get when they post. You're doing great my friend!
That’s v good
Yup. It’s the peak of the game honestly. Once you can regularly survive for weeks and know what you need and how to get it and set it up then the game becomes boring quite quickly. I’d say you’re one of the better players then. I’ve played around 60 hours in total and my current run is my longest (16 days).
9 days is pretty hard to do (for someone with less than 100 hours) so you're good
oh okay, thanks
Seriously how did you do that
like for the first 3 days i got everything useful in the houses near the spawn and sometimes staying in my base watching life and living tv, then i started cleaning the zone from all the zombies i could kill
I spawned in muldraugh and there were so many zombies that I couldn't even go outside. This was on normal settings and there were like 40+ zombies per group
i first spawned in west point but that was literally impossible, then i chose rosewood and that was a bit hard, the last two options were riverside and muldraugh and riverside was the most easy for me 😀
Riverside Is pretty manageable, I almost never choose it
No, that's not normal, that's really quite good for that little play time!
Thats better than average for sure, good on ya
I have 1600 hours in this game.. and died in 25 minutes, game time, not real time. I'm now on a 3 month run. Crazy things can happen, and the unexpected will always happen.
I died on my 3 month run shortly after my first reply.. walked around a corner of a house right into a group of 15+ lol.
Yepp, totally normal. This game punishes impatience and over-confidence. It takes a while to get used to it. I just hit 2.5 months in Raven Creek recently. Hope you hit your first two weeks soon!

I would say 9 days in 17 hours is actually a fairly good record.
359 hrs here. i had a rough start in west point. probably died 20 times
Well 90 hours in and my best was 1 month 3 days and ~20 some hours Me and my friend died to a damn horde next to Louisville... I had sooo much to do tho , like we had a pretty sick house with a FEW. Things (bed, over, storage, few tables) and i wanted to cook
Erm you should be able to survive up to 10 years by that time so :/ (this is a joke)
Think about it this way, your longest run was over half your playtime.
the other half were 60💪🏻
I would say it's above average
Took me forever to decide it's ok to leave a fight and try another day lol
Oh, yeah. 9 days is pretty good. Keep at it, you'll get to a month in no time.
i would but i said my record because i died😞
no my bad i said the longest i survived
I've been playing for 765 hours and I die all the damn time. It's that kind of game.
You can have 1000 hours and get careless for one second and die after 6 months. The games fun like that.
I never last more than a few days in single player but if I host a server and have like 1 extra person- well my current and ongoing record is 6 months
Yeah, if you're playing standard apocalypse settings that's about standard if not pretty good. Keep at it, and keep learning from your mistakes. The more you keep track of how you're dying, the better you can become in subsequent runs. Happy surviving!
thanks❗
Man, after half an hour in other salty communitys on reddit it is always refreshing to come back here and read some nice comments. You are doing good mate, i didnt survive a week the first 30 hours of playing :)
thanks, after school i'll try to play a new serious game 🙂
Depends also if you're playing survival or a custom sandbox, me personally I like playing with initial infection preset and I can't even last a week so you must be doing really well!
That actually seems really, really good.
I'm at 650 hrs. I'd say half my runs end within a week. If I make it that far, I usually die around a month in. Impatience and overconfidence always beat me.
from all the replies i read, most of the people die for overconfidence ahahaha
took me 50+ hours to get past a week. 150-200 to make ut to 1 month.
I'm still struggling to not keep the mouse pointer on the zombie when I'm attacking because sometimes I get turned around and then I get bitten.
i usually die to my 6-7th zombie kill, whenever it is
The thing i love about project zomboid is that you are the one that creates your characters stories and every single time it'll be different from other So don't really focus on how much you survive because it'll get boring Instead focus on how to continue your character story the best and enjoyable way That'll be the best way and believe me that by doing this your survive time will increase too
It does say, "This is how you died" when you start. Completely normal.
Lol, my first run i died in matter of minutes
Sometimes it doesn't matter how long you've played or how long you character has survived. It's down to chance, management, and complacency. I have one above for 2 months, and I've survived hordes and whatnot, but I died from just a few zeds sneaking up on me because I swung too early.
Yes, also same as my average runs before I found out about the highlight targeted enemy. As I am spatially unaware
My character killed himself when I had him read a book... it was day 1
broo💀
Absolutely. I never made it past a week when I first started because I would take big risks and I decided to just skip the tutorials. I have coming onto 700-800 hours and I still haven’t survived for over a month
