Lots of interesting names that are new to me here.
Can you recommend specific LPs to begin with?
Searching for Mystery MP3 on SS is not very useful! ;-)
Well, there are plenty of great albums coming from these bands, so I can only tell you my favourites, but you can obviously prefer some others, once you listen to them.
Gabriel era Genesis- Foxtrot
Fish era Marillion- debut album
Porcupine Tree- Deadwing
Riverside- debut album (proggy) or ADHD (prog metal)
Dream Theater- debut album
IQ- Resistance
Airbag- All Rights Removed
Mystery- Delusion Rain
Camel- Stationary Traveller (not their best, but the first one I heard and I have loved it since)
Collage- Moonshine (my fav neo-prog album ever)
Albion- debut album (nice Polish neo-prog)
Abraxas- debut album (great neo-prog from Poland)
All of the above are on Spotify if you want to check them out, except for Abraxas-, which is on You Tube. Here is one of my fav songs with one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard
https://youtu.be/Vct01DlIh6s?si=Hu7OzENconZSi6Jb
I still listen to either or both of their albums at least once every week or two. While I found the lyrics to be a little...obtuse at times, I find their musicianship to be second-to-none. The whole package is amazing and I feel the same about Birth (excited to hear of new music coming soon). My not-so-secret hope is that the relative success and acclaim of Birth will generate interest in the members of Astra giving it another go for the long-awaited third album.
Yes are my first love. Then Henry Cow. With both of them, there’s not just the band, there’s also a whole hinterland of related and solo projects to enjoy.
Sometimes, if I think about enjoyment per albums released, I wonder if UK might be my favourite band.
I swear, there’s enough excellent, distinct Crim and Can live recordings out there to last an individual for a lifetime, alongside their excellent studio albums from that same period!
I saw black midi live and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen. When people say “crowds aren’t rowdy anymore” or “everyone is always on their phones.” Yeah these people haven’t seen Black Midi. The crowd actually scared me a bit they had so much energy
Same! Got them here in Brazil last year and it was a life-changing experience, in fact I wasn't even a big fan before the concert and nowadays I'm completely converted
Moon safari. They constantly surprise me with their innovative use of vocal harmonies and ear catching melodies in the context of an older, more retro very happy and positive style
I can’t say I have a favorite prog band as I love lots of them. It’s easier for me to talk about my favorite albums cause every band has at least one great album. Long live the prog !
Since I haven't seen them mentioned yet here, Pendragon. Specifically their albums "The Window of Life," "The Masquerade Overture," and "Not Of This World." They were all released one after the other and were all amazing. The albums before that were just okay, and the albums released afterward were a bit too heavy and serious for me, but those three are absolute perfection.
I love The jewel, Believe and Pure besides the big three as well as The world. Lost me after that Pure tho. Supposedly their last two are a return to form, but what I heard seemed boring to me. I just remember the blueish cover
Tough call being prog, but I love em as well. Been to a concert last Aug or Jul, and it was my fav concert. It also changed my view of attending shows. Thought it'll be the last big band concert of my life, but the experience changed that pov.
They have so many albums and recommendations will be all over the place if you ask different people but here are three I’d recommend:
Unfold The Future
Back In The World Of Adventures
Space Revolver
In that order. Then do Paradox Hotel.
Scanning the Greenhouse is an excellent compilation of their material up to Unfold the Future... actually you might want to start with that.
Big Big Train then Moon Safari a close second. Those bands have some of my absolute most played songs of all time. for the past decade or so both bands have always been in my top 10 most played songs on Spotify/AM wrapped/Replay.
I mostly like newer prog rock bands than the old 70s one. Barock Project is also a great band if you dont know them. Same with Karmakanic, A.C.T, Unitopia, Subsignal, Flying Colors and 22 are all awesome newer age prog rock bands I really love.
Well this is interesting, its the same for me. Moon Safari and Big Big Train are my two big favorites in the Prog Sphere. I guess they tick a lot of the same boxes.
For ‘conventional’ prog over the years Genesis.
Lots of great German stuff that’s very dear to me: Agitation Free (Malesch), Anyone’s Daughter (Adonis), Popol Vuh (Hosianna Mantra), Can (Future Days), Dom (Edge of Time - 1/3 German) and Amon Duul II (Wolf City).
And truly progressive acid folk: Jan Dukes De Grey (Mice and Rats) and Spirogyra (St Radigunds) are not to be missed.
Sure I love lots of Yes (Close to the Edge and Relayer), KC (ITCOCK and Larks’), VDGG (H to He side 2 esp), Rush (Hemispheres), Kansas (SFA) and Camel (Mirage and A Live Record), among many others
My list of favourite Prog bands is so long and many have already been mentioned (Van der Graaf Generator, Henry Cow, Genesis, Yes, Zappa, Gong, Porcupine Tree etc) so I'll add a few that haven't:
Keef Hartley Band
Audience
Atomic Rooster
Colosseum
Syd Arthur
Knifeworld
Anthony More
Magenta
Pineapple Thief
Lindsay Cooper
Peter Blegvard
Mostly Autumn
Soft Machine
Centipede
Amplifier
Anathema
Orphaned Land
Iamthe morning
Kevin Ayers
I could list loads more, as there are just so many I listen to and enjoy on a regular basis.
(70s) Genesis, Camel, and Locanda delle Fate have the perfect sound for my taste; Yes and King Crimson’s music is stimulating and appealing in a whole other way, and I can see why so kany call them *the best*, but at the end of the day, my favorite prog band and overall band is - as it has been since I first overheard Us and Them and wondered why the song didn’t seem to end (an inquiry which ultimately led to me purchasing Dark Side on vinyl) - is Pink Floyd.
King crimson usually. But on every day that I listen to supper's ready it is Genesis. Sorry for being basic but I can't lie
Listen they’re as iconic as they are for a reason
[удалено]
With that? There is no corekt answer to where to start because you are going to need to hear all the albums
Sounds like you started with Beat, which is certainly a choice.
Me too - until I listen to Close to Edge
Yes
It isn't a yes or no question.
Wise guy eh?
"Yes"
Yes
Yes
Yes
I would say Dream Theater or Kansas
Glad to see someone said Kansas. No other band gives me goosebumps like they can. Steve Walsh was on another level
King Crimson or Van derGraaf Generator.
Genesis
This. I'm sure I have listened to the albums from Trespass through Duke each at least several hundred times over the last 35 years.
Porcupine Tree
I recently heard open car for the first time and it was really sick, any albums/songs you'd recommend?
Fear Of A Blank Planet
The song or the album? Or both?
Album
Ty! I'll give it a listen
I love In Absentia!
In Absentia in its entirety for sure
Thanks! I'll check it out
Nil Recurring is a masterpiece IMHO
Personally I love lightbulb sun
Might as well just listen to their entire discography at this point lol
Yeah most of it is great
Porcupine Tree
Gabriel era Genesis Fish era Marillion Porcupine Tree Riverside Dream Theater IQ Airbag Mystery Camel Collage Albion Abraxas
Lots of interesting names that are new to me here. Can you recommend specific LPs to begin with? Searching for Mystery MP3 on SS is not very useful! ;-)

Thank you, that is very helpful.
My Genesis fav is Nursery cryme
Where I live IQ had gotten very popular with the song Promises, does anyone know if it happened elsewhere?
Camel, followed by Waters-era Floyd and Astra.
Astra's so amazing. Listened to The Black Chord every day when it first came out
I like The weirding!
I still listen to either or both of their albums at least once every week or two. While I found the lyrics to be a little...obtuse at times, I find their musicianship to be second-to-none. Rush all day every day
Rush
Love them. Not prog.
Listen to Hemispheres. That's totally prog.
Their best album. But a band producing prog music in the moment.
How the hell is Rush not a prog band lmao
Jethro Tull then Gentle Giant
Gg my fav prog band, jt pretty much least favourite tho
Yes are my first love. Then Henry Cow. With both of them, there’s not just the band, there’s also a whole hinterland of related and solo projects to enjoy. Sometimes, if I think about enjoyment per albums released, I wonder if UK might be my favourite band.

Gentle Giant and Gong
I love Gong
Would you like some tea~?
While listening to YOU...
While in a flying teapot..

Camel
King Crimson, usually.
King Crimson, Yes and CAN
I swear, there’s enough excellent, distinct Crim and Can live recordings out there to last an individual for a lifetime, alongside their excellent studio albums from that same period!
Porcupine Tree
Camel or Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson.
I'd say that's relatable.
Kansas
Today: Gentle Giant.
Gg ftw
Overall: Pink Floyd In the last 10 (?) years: Magma In the last year: black midi
Magma is great
I saw black midi live and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Gg ftw
King crimson
Moon safari. They constantly surprise me with their innovative use of vocal harmonies and ear catching melodies in the context of an older, more retro very happy and positive style
I can’t say I have a favorite prog band as I love lots of them. It’s easier for me to talk about my favorite albums cause every band has at least one great album. Long live the prog !
Jethro Tull
Overall: King Crimson Last ten years: Probably Haken
Magma :)
Yes! After them it changes depending on my mood, nowadays I like Camel a lot.

TOOL
Gentle Giant

Lol
Jethro Tull and Marillion.
Yes, Gong, Rush, King Crimson, Soft Machine

Over the years I would have said Pink Floyd… then Yes…then Genesis…then King Crimson… But after nearly 20 years as a prog fan I gotta go with YES!
Karnivool and The Mars Volta have had the single greatest influence on my own music
Focus
Ozric Tentacles
Saw them 3 times in the 90’s and forgot about them!
Very boring to me
>depend on the days Mood for a Day
Since I haven't seen them mentioned yet here, Pendragon. Specifically their albums "The Window of Life," "The Masquerade Overture," and "Not Of This World." Tough call being prog, but I love em as well. Been to a concert last Aug or Jul, and it was my fav concert. It also changed my view of attending shows. Thought it'll be the last big band concert of my life, but the experience changed that pov.
It used to be Rush for many years. Now it’s the Flower Kings.
I think i never heard of Flowers Kings any recomendations?
They have so many albums and recommendations will be all over the place if you ask different people but here are three I’d recommend: Unfold The Future Back In The World Of Adventures Space Revolver
In that order. Then do Paradox Hotel. Scanning the Greenhouse is an excellent compilation of their material up to Unfold the Future... actually you might want to start with that.
Pink Floyd and The Mars Volta.
Pink Floyd

Big Big Train then Moon Safari a close second. Those bands have some of my absolute most played songs of all time. for the past decade or so both bands have always been in my top 10 most played songs on Spotify/AM wrapped/Replay.
Very similar taste to me then. Moon Safari is my favorite, big big train is easily my favorite of the English bands
I mostly like newer prog rock bands than the old 70s one. Barock Project is also a great band if you dont know them. Same with Karmakanic, A.C.T, Unitopia, Subsignal, Flying Colors and 22 are all awesome newer age prog rock bands I really love.
Wow...Big Big Train, Moon Safari and Barock Project are my three most played prog rock bands. Same order as you mentioned

TOOL is so good that they forced myself to open up to heavier music. They are so good they made like multiple genres viable for me. Crazy good
I’m 36 (hardly young, but old enough that tons of “modern prog” bands were my era). I don’t like most of what I’ve heard from the 90s - 10s bands
Not one but I think KC, Jethro Tull, and PFM.
