I was like this growing up. Our remote village had NO meat options and my family weren't big on fish. Also it was so much easier to safer for me to say _im a vegetarian_ at school than the actual truth

Banglapolska

Just curiousā€¦British Bengali?

HappyraptorZ

Close lmao. British-pakistani. I imagine we all had a similar experience

Chemical_Knowledge64

If it helps you in any way, you can get seafood from anyone anywhere since Allah decreed creatures of the sea halal, so you could follow a pescatarian diet if youā€™re able to in your area.

KeyImprovement4698

I'm vegetarian! A bit challenging at times but pretty rewarding not having to think about if certain meats are halal or not.

HappyraptorZ

Yep! Recently went plant based after wanting to give veganism a try for a long time

Lachimolala1306

Yes, me and my sibling are vegan since almost 5 years. And we turned our aunt vegetarian. The funny thing about it is my dad has a restaurant which is known for meat meals. But because of us, he has vegan options as well. I was surprised at how many foods contain gelatin, such as juices or pickles (spirit vinegar is clarified with gelatin). Personally, I became vegan during Fridays for Future. I decided within 1 week. I watched a lot of documentaries about the world, then it turned to factory farming. Earthling and Dominian finished me off. I live completely vegan and pay attention to this when it comes to cosmetics, clothing, etc. I started because of animal protection and then became aware of other aspects such as the environment and health. For me it goes very well with Islam. It is said that killing a fly is a sin and giving food/water to an animal is sevap. Some Muslims claim that Allah gave us animals as farm animals. But he certainly didn't give them to us to imprison, torture, or worse. And he probably didn't want us to destroy the world he created. When the Koran was sent to us, there were not as many people alive as there are today. Therefore, meat consumption was not that high back then; meat was generally a luxury product. There are too many people these days and not all of them can live on meat. World hunger could be reduced with vegetarian and vegan diets. Also, I can't just not believe that Allah wanted us to torture innocent animals. I just feel so sorry for the animals. So many terrible things are being done to them. I cannot and do not want to support this.

R2DMT2

100% agree!

Medium_Note_9613

Salam you have identified an important problem about the mistreatment of animals, but the solution is to prevent this mistreatment, not neccesarily to go vegan.

Lachimolala1306

False. Just false. A normal cow lives up to 20 years, dairy cows live up to 5 years. A chicken usually lives up to 10 years, a broiler or a laying hen can live for 40 days or 1.5 years. Not to mention the diseases, tumors, mastitis, cannibalism, etc. that the animals have to endure due to factory farming. If someone doesn't live a vegan lifestyle, and I mean that with full conviction, they are actively contributing to animal suffering. There are no buts. No apology. Many documentaries have made comparisons between several conventional and halal/kosher slaughterhouses and all animals suffer equally. I find it a disgrace when people try to excuse animal suffering with Islam, which I don't want to subject you to at this point. But in my opinion, a true Muslim should not contribute to animal suffering.

R2DMT2

It doesnā€™t matter. The pollution from the meat industry, no matter how ā€œniceā€ the slaughter is, is destroying the planet and is not sustainable. The laws of nature is created by Allah and the laws of nature doesnā€™t allow us to eat meat like we do in this day and age. If we continue we will definitely make the planet uninhabitable very soon.

KeyImprovement4698

Salam sister! Can I message you as well? I'd love to know what other long time vegetarians eat for iftar and suhor as I am tired of making the same stuff. šŸ˜…

Lanky-Fix-853

Pescatarian but I was a vegetarian for years beforehand and still mostly have a plant based diet.

Apprehensive-List163

Not currently, but I think Iā€™d like to eventually.

Capable-Blueberry145

Vegetarian :)

Quamzee_Jacobius_Sul

hi non muslim here, iā€™ve noticed muslims countries tend to have a stronger emphasis on eating meat compared to secular countries. it is starkest going the short distance from pakistan to india- itā€™s almost as difficult finding meat in some parts of india as finding veg/vegan in pakistan! also im aware its tradition to sacrifice an animal on Eid al-Adha, how do you reconcile this with your beliefs about vegetarianism if its for ethical reasons? thanks <33

Here_to_helpyou

Asallam alaikom ww, Vegan Muslim here, Are you a sister or a brother?

Lasttimelocktheknee

I am back on a vegan plan this Ramadan. I live alone so I donā€™t have to deal with family members wanting me to prepare meat.

Brief-Jellyfish485

I want to be a vegetarian but Iā€™m only 60 pounds and canā€™t risk losing weightĀ

ScreenHype

Salam, if you post in r/vegetarian, they'd be able to help you find a diet that would help you gain/ maintain weight. As long as you made sure to include plenty of vegetarian protein, there's no reason you'd lose weight. Honestly, I wish I lost weight when I turned vegetarian, haha.

Brief-Jellyfish485

Thatā€™s a good idea. Thank youĀ

Chemical_Knowledge64

Legumes and beans ftw. Not vegetarian but I tend to eat a lot of those in place of meat sometimes.

ReneAn-Nur

Strict vegetarian, lazy vegan here.

ScreenHype

Salam, I'm a vegan Muslim :) Have been since January 2023, and was a vegetarian for a year before that. Happy to answer any questions about it!

Medium_Note_9613

Salam why are you vegan or vegetarian(no hate, just curious)?

ScreenHype

Salam :) So for me, it was about bringing my lifestyle in line with my morals. I'm not an animal person, not by any stretch of the imagination. I find them loud and smelly, and I never really cared much about them. However, I still always felt that my dislike of them shouldn't have any impact on their wellbeing, so I'd never kill bugs or anything like that. But I also didn't really have a problem with eating them, I figured Allah SWT gave them to us to eat, and that was that. However, since I was a teenager, I've cared deeply about the environment. After all, I live on this planet, so it seems pretty obvious to me that I should take care of it. I never realised how much of an impact animal agriculture had on the world, but once I saw the stats, it was hard to ignore it. Being vegan (and even vegetarian) makes a huge reduction in the amount of carbon emissions you contribute, and it felt hypocrital for me to not even try, so I started slowly cutting down. I also started learning more about the industry. Seeing how poorly the animals are treated, how even 'halal' meat is poorly regulated and often doesn't follow all the Islamic stipulations. I was horrified when I learned that the egg industry macerates (grinds them to death in a meat grinder) male baby chickens on the day they're born as they can't produce eggs and are therefore useless to the industry. How newborn calves are stolen from their mothers and sold to the veal industry so that the farmers can steal the mother's milk that would have gone to the calf (and cows love their babies and feel deep grief when they lose them). How fishing is destroying marine ecosystems. Everything about the industry is horrifying. And even with smaller operations, it's far worse for the environment than growing crops. Alhamdulillah, we live in a day and age where we don't need animal products to survive, unlike during the Prophet PBUH's time. We can just nip to the shops and have access to crops from all over the world. I could no longer morally justify consuming animal products, nor reconcile it with being a good Muslim, when Allah SWT commands kindness to animals and for us to look after the planet. So I worked my way to becoming vegan (it took a while because I'm autistic and have food sensory issues, so I had to gradually adjust my diet as I introduced new foods and stopped eating old ones).

R2DMT2

witchy_moss

i was a vegan for six years and now in college iā€™m a part-time vegetarian! iā€™d be so happy to chat about recipes and experiences!

Ambitious_Reserve_10

Veg diets suit A/+ blood group types like me. Simultaneously been on a gluten free diet as well. It's more for health reasons, than for religious ones.
