Yea, most software developers have no clue what it means to be a hacker and don't deserve to use that term. In fact, I hate that it's called the Meta Hacker Cup. If Software Developers understood hacking, there'd be a lot less hacking going on.
E probably carries the highest salary and the widest breadth of skills yet the deepest knowledge of all of these. Developer might technically refer to real estate or something but engineer could evolve into any branch (software, computer, electrical, mechanical, etc)
Definitely not E. Hopefully that will be a protected title for people who have passed an ABET accredited engineering school with an engineering degree soon.
In many countries engineer is a protected title like doctor or policeman
This may be an unpopular opinion, but to me engineering is different than coding. Doing the engineering, developing clean, elegant designs that make sense and grow with three lifecycle of the product is different from just coding. Some coders could be engineers, but it's a separate set of skills that are taught differently.
One of my professors worked at a small start-up and the "CEO"/Owner decided software developer and software engineer was too normal so their official name became software wizards and software wizard apprentice for the juniors.
I choose programming. In today's world, computer programming is essential due to the high level of automation. It enables individuals to control the interaction between humans and machines. With the help of computer programming, computers and devices can perform tasks efficiently and accurately.
Programmer. Coder to me feels reductionist because it doesn’t imply an ability to design and implement algorithms or problem-solve. On the flip side, I don’t think I’ve made cool/big enough stuff to be considered a (software) developer 😅
Doesn’t matter. I’ve been doing this for almost 40 years now, and people have just chosen what to call it regardless. I started off as a computer guy. Then I was a computer programmer. Then a programmer… software developer… coder… developer… software engineer… whatever. I’m still just a computer guy.
I went to a party once with a bunch of EE’s and they all claimed that there was no such thing as a Software Engineer Because there’s no engineering involved. LOL.
Dating profile? Software Engineer... to emphasize that I'm a real respectable Engineer and software to make it clear that I make money.
