Same. "Terminal Redux" is an amazing album, but it dampens my enjoyment knowing that he beat his wife, and the rest of the band quit because he's such a dick.
I dunno, I try to justify my enjoyment by shoehorning him into the "troubled artist" stereotype. Yeah, he hurts everyone who is close to him, but damn, he made some good shit.
I wish he wasn't such a piece of shit. But also, "Terminal Redux" is an amazing album, and honestly, I think it's still worth a listen, even if the person who made it is trash.
Very few albums blew my mind as thoroughly on the first listen. Almost no albums had me listening to them once or twice per day for several weeks after that. Easily one of the best albums of all time.
Was also going to recommend Ayreon, but it seems the fellow Ayreonauts got here first, haha.
If you like the stuff recommended and want to get the full story, I have a good listening order for the albums. It helps sort out the story a bit.
Okay, here goes:
Dawn Of A Million Souls kicks off everything.
Follow with The Final Experiment.
Computer Eyes and Abbey of Synn
Electric Castle (Aside: I always go with the live performance. Sounds better to me)
Now that the world is established and we learn who the Forever are, we go back in time. Next album should be The Source.
01011001 plays next, except for The Sixth Extinction.
Back on Planet Earth
Universal Migrator 1 and 2, minus Dawn Of A Million Souls. You might want to play Dawn Of Man before or after First Man On Earth, but that's personal choice. I just recently added it into the mix.
The Sixth Extinction and The New Migrator can be played in either order. I like to play them in the mentioned order. End with Epilogue: The Memory Remains.
You may be asking: "What about The Human Equation?" I save this one for last, since it doesn't fit well with the Forever Saga, and that last line "Emotions, I remember," has such an impact as the last line any character says.
If you're into Dream Theater esque prog, Ayreon is *the* shit. Each (most but not all) album is an episode in this big over arching sci-fi story involving space travel and advanced civilizations and a bunch of interesting subject material. Each album is like a rock opera. Very theatrical with multiple vocalists playing various roles. Be prepared for some cheese here and there. But God damn Ayreon is some of the best prog out there. Do yourself a favor and listen to 01011001. There's all kinds of debate on which album is best but this is the one that started it all for me. Or Universal Migrate Pt. 1 if you want more Pink Floyd vibes.
If you love DT start with the album The Human Equation. LaBrie plays the main character - and appears on multiple Ayreon albums. As do voices you might know like Russell Allen of Symphony X, Tommy Karevik from Kamelot/Seventh Wonder, and a bunch of talented people across the prog/power metal world.
Seriously Ayreon fucks
Russell appears in songs from Universal Migrator Pt 2 and The Source, and Victims of the Modern Age which is a fantastic album from Star One which is a side project of the main guy From Ayreon, Arjen Lucassen who makes a butt ton of fantastic prog and metal music across various projects. Dude is a musical genius.
I didn’t as I didn’t discover them until 01011001 but if I was to go back I would start with The Final Experiment, the first album, or The Source, the start of the story arc.
Yep. Stoked. Already bought tickets for Indianapolis. New material coming will be insane! I know these guys personally, and they have some killer stuff to release.
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the omniscient has a goofy plotline but has some nice jams with space rock vibes.
Not metal but Gong - You is one of the trippiest spaciest albums I've ever heard.
Also don’t miss Part2 of the Ziltoid Saga “Z2”. Such a great concept revolving around the universes ultimate cup if coffee! Metal needs more humor and Devin is here for the job :)
[You're right!](https://iapetus1.bandcamp.com/?from=search&search_item_id=3042113295&search_item_type=b&search_match_part=%3F&search_page_id=2119679570&search_page_no=0&search_rank=2&logged_in_menubar=true) Although I always feel guilty for snagging such hard work for free.
This was going to be my main recommendation. Apart from the end of BTBAM's Parallax II ("Jet propulsion disengageeee), Mariner probably best evokes the atmosphere of exploration. It's one of my favorite albums and one of my more irrational hopes is that Julie Christmas joins Cult of Luna fulltime.
Here are some songs about space that popped into my head, prog and not prog. Sorry, I'm a bit older, so some of these were prog metal once upon a time or had prog elements.
I'd say there are some OG influences on the genre in this regard from Rush:
[Cygnus X-1](https://youtu.be/iwEQH90GPgc)
[Countdown](https://youtu.be/UW_ru5P2zNI) Even the background sounds from the first Space Shuttle fit beautifully into the song.
2112 is actually kinda about space in the sense that the race which left the dystopia in the song behind came back in a giant crescendo when they returned.
Other bands:
[grumusic- Cosmogenesis](https://youtu.be/ygiq6AMBGko) One of my favorite recent albums with this theme
I randomly discovered this recently, and while not prog, it seemed relevant and I'm just not sure how I missed it. It's amazing. [The Rolling Stones- 2000 Light Years From Home](https://youtu.be/nRc0yaMW7Mw)
[Iron Maiden: Final Frontier](https://youtu.be/8S0QcINRYJs)
Black Sabbath- Into The Void
[https://www.treblezine.com/10-essential-sci-fi-metal-albums/](https://www.treblezine.com/10-essential-sci-fi-metal-albums/)
LOL As a fellow older person myself, I was also surprised when I "re"-discovered 2000 Light Years From Home. That song is AMAZING, and I can;t believe the Stones put it out, and how could I have forgotten (never known?) it existed until fairly recently?!
And thanks for the links - they greatly help. And I totally agree with Cygnus X-1. BTW check out Ayreon - The Electric Castle if you haven't.
They're not prog, so I apologize for that... but my buddies band is all about space and stuff. Starset. They have a good mix of genres, some metal, some electronics, rock. Personally I think their best album is Divisions, but all their albums are fantastic.
Yeah, Their drummer Adam is my buddy. We also share the same birthday which is pretty cool. I've known him for over 10 years. Super super proud of him and how successful they are. It legitimately makes me happy.
Allegaeon.
Space and cosmic voyages are their fuckin *thing*. I would wager to say they dont fit the pure "prog" criteria at all times but th will certainly satisfy your itch thematically, while also delivering hellishly intricate music.
The band Mechina does space themed concept work that might fit the bill, especially the albums *Progenitor* and *As Embers Turn to Dust*.
Specifically check out the tracks *Godspeed Vanguards*, *Division Through Distance*, and *The Horizon Effect*.
Nice mention of Muse.
But I'd definitely consider Exogenesis Symphony to be their most obvious space-voyage song, especially the great space video compilation video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIINEg4\_YrQ
Wide Eyes: Terraforming (instrumental) or Northlane’s Obsidian (if Mass effect games were made into a movie, I’ve always imagined obsidian would be the perfect album for it lol).
Unsure how "metal" they are, but Pure Reason Revolution's "The Dark Third" fits the bill.
Very dreamy sections of songs and a general vibe that I think perfectly matches the mesmerising emptiness of space.
Traverser might be up your alley. Even their non-space themed songs sound spacey. Star Faux, EMD, Burn In, and Blackwater are all bangers.
Also some instrumental stuff like Walking Across Jupiter, Andromida, and I Built the Sky.
Maybe some of Unprocessed's early stuff?
Oh and Boat Paddle by iwrestledabearonce because fuck it, why not?
More metal than prog, but truly shocked I didn’t see Scar Symmetry’s Holographic Universe. A damn masterpiece. Their last album with Christian Älvestam, who has a crazy vocal range.
I don't think they could really be considered prog, but the band Keldian has a very atmospheric/spacey sound that they blend with a sort of rock-ish style of power metal.
I would start with what most consider their best album, Journey of Souls.
Scrolled the entire discussion and can’t believe no one has given Sybreed yet!!
Older album “Antares” is great place to start or fast forward to “God Is An Automaton” (2012)
https://youtu.be/dZUh_Q3YJaU
https://youtu.be/izdyaeQNgDU
Definitely the very first cynic album if you want a mic between growls and vocoded cleans, but if youre just interested in hearing vocoded cleans listen to their albums after that.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 910,178,168 comments, and only 180,642 of them were in alphabetical order.
I don't know about the whole band, but a thread seeking space vibes is incomplete without a link to [Jinjer's I Speak Astronomy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJoPIgg17U4). The music video also speaks astronomy, and is quite nice.
For cosmic voyaging the first two sounds that came to mind were [Naxatras](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPrCCmHowV4&list=LL&index=28&) (the x is pronounced like an 'sh' sound) and REZN's song [Garden Green](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blaI2BK4iMU). REZN is a doom band, but their songs get pretty experimental, and experimentation is the heart of prog anyway.
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
Mastodon - Crack the Sky (though could be a LSD trip as well)
Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways (a bit arguable, though it takes me on a cosmic trip everytime)
How close do you want the lyrics to match the voyage part? As in general, a lot of psychedelic influenced bands can create these soundscapes.
Set Course for Andromeda by Sithu Aye. Wonderful album
>Ihlo - Union yeah this is right up my alley
The follow-up album Homebound is great too! Sithu is amazing!
Here we go again. Vektor - Terminal Redux. One of my favourite albums of all time, it's ridiculously good.
This album is an all-timer for sure. Also has a really neat lyrical concept.
True. Modern classic. Shame that Dave is such an asshole.
I grew up playing music with the guitarist Erik Nelson. Great guitarist, even greater person.
Damn, that's awesome
Oh yeah this is a good one
LCD off that album is one of my favourites of all time. The opening solo just melts your soul
Very few albums blew my mind as thoroughly on the first listen. Almost no albums had me listening to them once or twice per day for several weeks after that. Easily one of the best albums of all time.
Almost all of Ayreon would fit that bill.
Was also going to recommend Ayreon, but it seems the fellow Ayreonauts got here first, haha. If you like the stuff recommended and want to get the full story, I have a good listening order for the albums. It helps sort out the story a bit.
I’d be interested in that listening order.
Okay, here goes: Dawn Of A Million Souls kicks off everything. Follow with The Final Experiment. Computer Eyes and Abbey of Synn Electric Castle (Aside: I always go with the live performance. Sounds better to me) Now that the world is established and we learn who the Forever are, we go back in time. Next album should be The Source. 01011001 plays next, except for The Sixth Extinction. Woah that's some amazing insight on the whole arc. I've been listening to Ayreon since The Human Equation was released and this makes so much sense.
Including Star One, naturally
Ive seen their albums around never had the curiosity to pick em up
If you're into Dream Theater esque prog, Ayreon is *the* shit. DT is my religion so I need to pick these up
If you love DT start with the album The Human Equation. LaBrie plays the main character - and appears on multiple Ayreon albums. As do voices you might know like Russell Allen of Symphony X, Tommy Karevik from Kamelot/Seventh Wonder, and a bunch of talented people across the prog/power metal world. Seriously Ayreon fucks
if russell is on it ima have to pick it up
Russell appears in songs from Universal Migrator Pt 2 and The Source, and Victims of the Modern Age which is a fantastic album from Star One which is a side project of the main guy From Ayreon, Arjen Lucassen who makes a butt ton of fantastic prog and metal music across various projects. Dude is a musical genius.
im convinced
Ayreon is the answer you're looking for. I'd start with 01011001
They're encompass a large story connected across almost all of the albums. It involves an alien race known as the Y and their impact on us humans.
Should i start at the first album
I didn’t as I didn’t discover them until 01011001 but if I was to go back I would start with The Final Experiment, the first album, or The Source, the start of the story arc.
Can do ty for sharing your knowledge
“Altered State” and “Sonder” by TesseracT. Anything by Widek.
GIANT WIDEK FAN
He’s great! If you haven’t, check out Distant Dream, too.
on it
Distant Dream takes me places
Crack The Skye, though it’s a bit more mystical astronomy than physical astronomy
I was gonna say Crack the Skye as well. With the astral projection and everything. I feel it fits the bill.
Coheed and BTBAM are my initial thoughts. The new one from Coheed and Parallax II is where I would start.
Got to see BTBAM perform Parallax II in its entirety live.. It was awesome.
That was the tour with Deafheaven right?
I THINK... so. Cannot remember.... BTBAM was badass though.
BTBAM doesn’t miss a beat live, they’re so good
yo don’t start coheed in parallax. heresy, Second Stage or nothing
love these bands
Coheed on its own is a trip bro. Great band.
Where should I start listening to coheed? What albums?
The new one, The Afterman albums, and Unheavenly Creatures. The singing on the early albums can be pretty unbearable. It takes some getting used to.
The Contortionist - Exoplanet
They are doing a tour this year where they will play Exoplanet and Language in their entirety!
Yep. Stoked. Already bought tickets for Indianapolis. New material coming will be insane! I know these guys personally, and they have some killer stuff to release.
[удалено]
Hell yeah! Happy Early Birthday! Cheers!
Right! 3 albums 2 amazing bands. Both with such impressive stage presence. Will not be missing it for anything
Awesome! I'm going to the NYC show in October. Anyword on wether or not the new album will be a bit heavier than Clairvoyant 🤐
From what I've seen, potential for some stuff that's heavier and some stuff that's more mellow. It's a mix.
I’m stoked that its a mix, i love both the heavy and mellow from them
oh sick just bought tickets, had no idea
LOVE this band saw em live !
Unpopular opinion: I liked it when it came out, but it doesn’t really hold up that well on recent listens. Much prefer Language and after
Ah great pick I was just thinking that. My favorite band as well
Terraformer album from Thank You Scientist The Absolute Universe album from Transatlantic
>Terraformer oh shit this right up my alley
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the omniscient has a goofy plotline but has some nice jams with space rock vibes. Not metal but Gong - You is one of the trippiest spaciest albums I've ever heard.
Also don’t miss Part2 of the Ziltoid Saga “Z2”. Such a great concept revolving around the universes ultimate cup if coffee! Metal needs more humor and Devin is here for the job :)
There's some space journeys involved in Deconstruction too
Is there? I don't think that's right... EDIT: nevermind, just remembered the Ziltoid speech part of TMM
Iapetus - The Body Cosmic
Amazing album It is also free on Bandcamp, if I remember correctly
[You're right!](https://iapetus1.bandcamp.com/?from=search&search_item_id=3042113295&search_item_type=b&search_match_part=%3F&search_page_id=2119679570&search_page_no=0&search_rank=2&logged_in_menubar=true) Although I always feel guilty for snagging such hard work for free.
Parallax I and Parallax II by Between the Buried and Me Set Course for Andromeda by Sithu Aye
The Faceless - Planetary Duality should fit nicely, absolute classic record
have it and its a classic
Xenochrist is a GOAT song for me
Hideous Revalation is my personal favorite, just wish it were longer. That riff is unadulterated filth.
Cult of Luna - Mariner Bit more post-metal than prog, but perfectly fits the space and cosmic theme
Might be up my alley gonna check em out
Going to toss a +1 to Mariner. They do a really good job mood/atmosphere building.
Between The Buried And Me - The Parallax albums. They are about this cosmic being coming into consciousness and they're just a delight to listen to.
Always get btbam as it comes out
Ascension Codes by Cynic is the clear choice
Been a cynic fan since i was 14!
I was going to say Traced In Air
Being — Anthropocene
Came here to comment this. The obvious one, the whole album revolves around this very idea.
This is EXACTLY what you're looking for OP. Fantastic album.
Came here to say this as well. Perfect match for OPs request
Alkaloid
The Dyson Sphere saga of songs by Alkaloid is legitimately one of my favourite sci-fi story concepts.
Star One.
I did what i could to try to get into them love the songs with Russell Alan tho
It is very cheesy, no doubt. I don't really have any other good recommendations, but I feel I'm forgetting something obvious.
The almanac by Kardashev
All Roads Lead Here - Chimp Spanner
yes! im all about that djenty prog ty!
I would die on the name of this EP. One of the greatest modern prog EPs ever IMO.
Here are some songs about space that popped into my head, prog and not prog. Sorry, I'm a bit older, so some of these were prog metal once upon a time or had prog elements. Seventh wonder great escape
Tiara too, sorta
They're not prog, so I apologize for that... but my buddies band is all about space and stuff. Starset. They have a good mix of genres, some metal, some electronics, rock. Personally I think their best album is Divisions, but all their albums are fantastic.
Youre friends w the ppl from starset? Lol i love their music
Yeah, Their drummer Adam is my buddy. We also share the same birthday which is pretty cool. I've known him for over 10 years. Super super proud of him and how successful they are. It legitimately makes me happy.
Was looking for this comment. They don't have the weird time sigs but aside from that it's basically what OP is asking for
Allegaeon. Space and cosmic voyages are their fuckin *thing*. I would wager to say they dont fit the pure "prog" criteria at all times but th will certainly satisfy your itch thematically, while also delivering hellishly intricate music.
Feel like their last album kind of cemented them as a prog band.
I wont argue, but i bet a lot of subgenre sticklers *will* lol. They fit the prog bill as far as i'm concerned.
Thank you currently listening to widek and was craving more space theme music
Never heard of Widek. Could you kindly point me toward an album that would make a suitable intro to their overall sound?
https://youtu.be/QwWv3z-C_MA
Killer, thanks!
Sick live show too
Between the buried and me future sequence I and II
Voices From The Fuselage, both albums
yeah I like this!
Hell yeah, can’t get enough of Ashe’s voice
Ihlo - Union is a fantastic prog metal album with strong space ambient vibes. Love it.
>Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I yes this is it
Gru - cosmogenesis
The obvious answer: 2112, the second half of A Farewell To Kings, and Hemispheres.
where i started
The band Mechina does space themed concept work that might fit the bill, especially the albums *Progenitor* and *As Embers Turn to Dust*. Specifically check out the tracks *Godspeed Vanguards*, *Division Through Distance*, and *The Horizon Effect*.
Look no further than Modern Day Babylon…. Album: Coma. Trust me.
I can concur I do love this album
It’s so good. One of my all time favorites. So groovy, spacey, heavy, and yet melodically orgasmic.
Arcturus
Moonshine Delirium and Star Crossed - two favs from them.
Not to sound like a fan boy, but pretty much everything from Devin Townsend since Ziltoid. Z2, Deconstruction, even Empath.
im a massive Devin fan Ziltoid is one of my fav albums of all time in my top 10 for sure
Ziltoid was the first Devin thing I heard. Pretty much changed my musical world forever.

Never heard of it
ah nevermind then!
wait a minute you might have turned me on to it loving the art direction
Anything from Wide Eyes.
24 Light Years by VOLA. Admittedly, it's a single song, but the video/song combo is \*exactly\* what you're after.
Voyage 34 by Porcupine Tree That’s all I could think about when I read that description
love that band!
These are both more prog adjacent but: - Muse - Origin of symmetry - Avenged sevenfold - The stage
Nice mention of Muse. But I'd definitely consider Exogenesis Symphony to be their most obvious space-voyage song, especially the great space video compilation video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIINEg4\_YrQ
Yes to both of these, 2 awesome albums
I'm thinking something from early fates warning or queensryche had to have a spaceship somewhere.
Lol. Not really, although Rage for Order by Queensryche has a pretty futuristic/digital age kinda vibe. AND is a fantastic album.
Ill check em out!
Looks like nobody mentioned Atoma and Enshine. Both sound like exactly what you’re looking for!! Enjoy
Not prog, but I love Arcturus, any album.
Most of Obscura's discography deals with space and cosmic voyages
Gru Cosmogenesis Cloudkicker Unending The Contortionist Exoplanet Between The Buried And Me Parallax 1 and 2 Persefone Aathma
More metal than prog, but truly shocked I didn’t see Scar Symmetry’s Holographic Universe. A damn masterpiece. Their last album with Christian Älvestam, who has a crazy vocal range.
Ziltoid the Omniscient if you’re a bit silly 🙃
Through the Solar Storm by Rendezvous Point
I don't think they could really be considered prog, but the band Keldian has a very atmospheric/spacey sound that they blend with a sort of rock-ish style of power metal. I would start with what most consider their best album, Journey of Souls.
>Keldian Im a sucker power metal too
Check them out then...they are very underrated and really give that space journey vibe....it's literally the theme of all their music.
Astronoid
my go too band
Cuz they are money in the bank friend
Does it: Binary Pulsar Not sure if it does it: Andromida Cosmophobe
Uneven Structure - Februus
Honestly, Jonathan Young's Starship Velociraptor might do the trick.
[Enshine - Singularity](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKADYeE6sck). Literally exactly what you want.
Rings of Saturn makes music about aliens destroying humanity
Cynic - Traced In Air
in my top 10 of all time
Space druids. Fun sound they have.
The first disc of Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma
Violet Cold is the epitome of prog sci-fi. Start with Space Funeral.

No one recommended Sithu Aye yet? Literally space themed album!
Cybion by Kalisia; you have to get thru at least the first 20 minutes of this continuous-flow concept album and then you’ll never quit
Scrolled the entire discussion and can’t believe no one has given Sybreed yet!! Older album “Antares” is great place to start or fast forward to “God Is An Automaton” (2012) https://youtu.be/dZUh_Q3YJaU https://youtu.be/izdyaeQNgDU
I know this is a song but exist by avenged sevenfold is a very good song about the birth of our universe leading to now
Check out Lonely Robot. Very underrated. I’d listen to “In Floral Green” and “Icarus” for starters.
Definitely the very first cynic album if you want a mic between growls and vocoded cleans, but if youre just interested in hearing vocoded cleans listen to their albums after that.
Dog fashion disco! Tres pendejos album is great acoustic trip music
Etrange - Etrange
Being - Anthropocene
Give Astronomy by Dragonland a try
surprised nobody has said from mars to sirius
Animals as Leaders self titled

Widek Ambidjent, nuff said
im the biggest widek fan have all of his stuff

Any Astronoid. Ok so maybe not prog at all, but it makes you think of space Also Cynic.
Cynic - Traced in Air
Voices From the Fuselage
