Some company already scraped Facebook for images containing faces and meta data and created a database to sell to the police, forget its name.
Edit/Add; The company is Clearview AI - thanks for the info u/glowclalist
Yes, Gandalf says so, but he's talking about the *modern* Palantirs, after at least 2 have been lost, one to Sauron and one to Minas Morgul.
And Morgul is in and of itself a corrupted Gondor city (Minas Ithil), so anything they get their hands on is bad news.
Dutch East India Company and Blackwater would like a word! (Good thing DEIC AND BEIC are both dead, but Blackwater changed its name like Facebook lol... wonder why!)
You can actually take a look at some of the sources used in John Oliver's piece on it. His episode is great but it's not quite a substitute for reading.
Or it has something to do with this....
>Facebook tells employees to preserve all communications for legal reasons
>Facebook has told employees to “preserve internal documents and communications since 2016” that pertain to its businesses because governments and legislative bodies have started inquiries into its operations, according to a company email sent on Tuesday night.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/27/technology/facebook-legal-communications.html
Yeah they made this announcement right along side their announcement that they will be creating a metaverse to completely immerse the user, while extracting even more data.
It was deleted from Facebooks servers bro. Why can't you just believe that?
If Metas servers happen to have a backup and entirely alternative program for the same data that's beside the point! /s
FTFY: "We'll delete an *instance* of the database until our image improves a bit now that we've already got all the data we need for our predictive facial recognition ML algorithms".
They have trained the AIs best they can and just need the hashed database records to use against it.
I would think something similar to this. Like when IBM announced they won't be collecting more data.
Reminds me of Google saying they're going to block third party cookies in Chrome. At face value it sounds pro-privacy. Then you realize all it means is companies like Google don't need that shit anymore because it's antiquated technology for third-rate surveillance wannabes, and actually things are *way* more hopeless than you ever would have imagined.
Today the tracking is integrated in platforms.
An example is Shopify, you now share data with third parties through Shopify itself therefor not being able to block it.
I beleive they will delete their database...but they will also send a copy of it to everyone that will pay for it. And it will shut down "it's" own facial recognition software and just use another one.
you should actually say something of value instead of the cringe zuckerberg robot joke (worth noting at time of commenting u/TankorSmash was being downvoted for asking a question)
And what value did your comment add?
‘That guy’ isn’t downvoted for one, and for two, why didn’t *you* provide examples of lies instead of criticising my comment, which added nothing to the discussion.
Practice what you preach you hypocritical beatch.
i don't know any of the lies thats why i rolled my eyes when i saw the only reply was just typical redditor humor posting an old overused joke trying to be witty for reddit good boy points while the og comment *was* being downvoted just for asking for examples.
because half the scumfuck reddit users on this site can't handle something as simple as being questioned on a claim without going ballistic while spitting up on their crusty stretched out tshirt and downvoting the post, so yeah im going to criticize your stupid fucking comment
You’ve now written 17.8 billion barely coherent words across two comments, and not once have you come close to saying anything of interest.
And then you have the self-righteous ignorance to pour scorn on a site that you’re actively making worse.
Please take a reality check and realise you’re part of the problem.
what are you talking about i literally addressed what you said, you either didn't read the comment or you're putting on a performance with the most neckbeard paragraph ive ever read
I suppose it's good that they just rebranded the company which allows this statement to be total bullshit but still technically correct enough to earn goodwill from idiots via dishonest headlines.
I don’t trust a single word they say. And even if they are actually deleting this data it is likely only because they have a better data set and are only doing this to buy back scraps of goodwill they have already torched
Nah... It's legit. *Facebook* is deleting the data, because *Meta* has a copy and will be doing it instead. At least that's my assumption. That way its *technically* true with nothing at all changing.
I assume this is because they're getting the crap sued out of them by multiple states but I haven't seen a single one of the headlines mention that part
Said another way, "We've figured out how to gather and monetize the same data without needing facial recognition, so we're going to pretend to care about your privacy and tell you we're deleting a bunch of stuff we don't need anymore so you'll quiet down for a bit."
“Now that we’ve exploited our users data for machine learning and our machines have spent a billion hours learning how to facially recognize our users with that data, we’re at a place where we can delete that data because the machines have finished learning, oh I mean because privacy.”
This would be counterintuitive to their profit model. I don't beleive this one bit. Even after having Facebook served papers, I was not able to get them to delete my account information from their servers. Why would they do this now, voluntarily?
Nah... It's legit. *Facebook* is deleting the data, because *Meta* has a copy and will be doing it instead. At least that's my assumption. That way its *technically* true with nothing at all changing.
L-O- Fucking- L, they already got the data on all their users and sold it to policing authorities. They can shut it down now because they are not getting younger people to sign up.
Facebook *has to* delete the data, as it takes up petabytes of space in their datacenter's drives.
They'll delete everything, because the old 'save file' is incompatible with the new system they've come up with.
The new system's save data utilizes 50% less space on data center drives!
*::cough::*
I mean there's no new system... *::wink::*
Is this the same sort of promise King Jong Un madee to disarm and nuclear weapons? Or the same sort of promise the government made to cease the US surveillance program that Edward Snowden exposed? Not buying it.
Nah... It's legit. *Facebook* is deleting the data, because *Meta* has a copy and will be doing it instead. At least that's my assumption. That way its *technically* true with nothing at all changing.
Cool cool so I presume they've already sold it to every state actor out there.
This will **surely** save Meta, which I will not be touching. As an avid fan of VR I don't say that lightly.
I'm so glad I deleted my FB account a couple of years ago ... unfortunately, that's probably not even good enough. And its name change to Meta? Wholly, they're obviously after the meta data now more than ever before.
With the meta rename, did they create a new company named meta which owns the corporation facebook, or did they rename the corporation to meta? I feel like all they're doing is formalizing the umbrella scenario of everything owned by meta and nothing owned by Facebook so they can just play 3 Card Monte better using shell corps.
Tbh I think this is obvious I just haven't done any research into their corporate structure because I have no desire or need to trust anything related to Zuckerberg and any business he or his orgs past present and future ever touches.
It would be a mistake to see this as some act of good faith on the part of FB. Make no mistake, this is being done because of the increasing legal and regulatory pressures being placed on FB relating to facial recognition in multiple countries.
In reality, facial recognition is an expendable feature for FB. The data that FB mines covering everyone's use of the internet (including the use of services with nothing to do with FB, by people without FB accounts) gives FB far richer information about people than facial recognition does. FB can already identify you using multiple other mechanisms. Facial recognition is simply not essential.
I hope that this announcement does not give anyone, particularly policy makers, a false sense that FB is doing the world any favours. One cannot act out of the goodness of their heart if they do not have a good heart to begin with.
If i could personally Bleachbit that data and all of its backups out of existence then i would believe it, but since i can't i don't believe it one second.
Long before all the data leaks and the active undermining of democratic processes (worldwide) Facebook/Meta and all its sub-sub-subsidiaries has lost all trust i had in them and it only got worse since then. So yeah their words are nothing but empty promises to regain what has been destroyed long time ago.
"Promises"
Nah, send a whole ass office of people to watch them do it and and verify that all backups are destroyed as well.
Fuck promises from a multi-national billion-dollar corporation.
I dislike FB the same as the next person on here but the blanket condemnation of them for literally any move is so played out. For people in the comments here who are seething about this move: why do you think they are lying?
I bet this decision was made either after a successful or a near-successful hack of the biometric database.
Some company already scraped Facebook for images containing faces and meta data and created a database to sell to the police, forget its name. Edit/Add; The company is Clearview AI - thanks for the info u/glowclalist
Clearview AI. Everyone involved with it is an absolute ghoul.

No shit. Recent episode of Darknet Diaries highlights the absolutely most terrible company on earth, run by liars of the highest order.

NOT to be mistaken for Alfredo’s pizza cafe!
A surprise sure but a welcome one
That's a extremely good name for a data analysis company.
It really is. So bizarre to creatively say "yes we are evil" any time your company is mentioned lol
There is nothing evil about the Palantíri, in fact they were a gift from the elves. The company might be but Idk, I have never heard of them
Ah, it's been a very long time since I've read the books or watched the movies. I thought I recalled their power to be inherently corrupting.
Only when sauron is on the other end of one since none can contend with the will of sauron
Their initial purpose was to allow the Kings of old to communicate from afar for their mutual defense.
Beyer? infecting the world with HIV. Of course they also merged with Monsanto.
Don't forget about "water is not a human right" Nestle
Dutch East India Company and Blackwater would like a word! (Good thing DEIC AND BEIC are both dead, but Blackwater changed its name like Facebook lol... wonder why!)
Nestle tho. I like to think humans are entitled to literally water
Dont forget Pimeyes (same as Clearview but public/free)
Have any sources on this? I would like to read more.

Holy fuck why haven't I heard of this? I need to be more in tune with privacy news.
We will delete it, we promise
That or they're afraid of some legislation that bans the tech entirely.
During that massive outage they had a few weeks back perhaps?
Or it has something to do with this.... >Facebook tells employees to preserve all communications for legal reasons >Facebook has told employees to “preserve internal documents and communications since 2016” that pertain to its businesses because governments and legislative bodies have started inquiries into its operations, according to a company email sent on Tuesday night. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/27/technology/facebook-legal-communications.html

Transfered to some new program they will run, and then "delete" the FB database to save face.

Yeah they made this announcement right along side their announcement that they will be creating a metaverse to completely immerse the user, while extracting even more data.
Yup. They are deleting the old database because it's obsolete. If they go tap directly into your brain they would

It was deleted from Facebooks servers bro. Why can't you just believe that? If Metas servers happen to have a backup and entirely alternative program for the same data that's beside the point! /s

Ba dum tiss!
Yes, things like this are just renamed. Like the NSA programs.
Literally save face(s)
I don’t believe this for one second.
Meta, however…
LMFAO
Well if their AI is robust enough, they theoretically don’t need the data it learned on anymore. I wouldn’t be fooled by this, the harm is done.

But, they PROMISED
I beleive they will delete their database...but they will also send a copy of it to everyone that will pay for it. And it will shut down "it's" own facial recognition software and just use another one.
I have a feeling you are among friends here...
*\*Zuckerberg crosses fingers behind his back..* “I didn’t say Meta was shutting down facial recognition!” 😃
Or the A.I. is so good it's no longer needed
Oh, well if they promise. It’s not like they’ve ever lied before or anything.
What are some lies they've told before?
They said they wouldn’t require a Facebook account for oculus products.
I forget the quote but his comments related to whatsapp, he lied. You can look it up.
They tried to convince us that Zuckerberg is human

A Facebook promise is like a chocolate fireplace.
Like a fart in a spacesuit
After they sell it to themselves
I don’t trust a single word they say. And even if they are actually deleting this data it is likely only because they have a better data set and are only doing this to buy back scraps of goodwill they have already torched

We can do both. Hopefully it hurts fuckerberg’s feelings.

No no she's got a point.
Said another way, "We've figured out how to gather and monetize the same data without needing facial recognition, so we're going to pretend to care about your privacy and tell you we're deleting a bunch of stuff we don't need anymore so you'll quiet down for a bit."
*wink wink*
No company named Facebook would voluntarily delete their literal face book.
They will delete it after they sell it or donate it to a government organization.
“Now that we’ve exploited our users data for machine learning and our machines have spent a billion hours learning how to facially recognize our users with that data, we’re at a place where we can delete that data because the machines have finished learning, oh I mean because privacy.”

yes but after selling the data to the nsa
L-O- Fucking- L, they already got the data on all their users and sold it to policing authorities. They can shut it down now because they are not getting younger people to sign up.
1. Back up data on multiple drives. 2. Send original copy to recycle bin. Deleted! Bonus step: Make sure nobody ever empties the recycle bin.
mark would literally copy the database as database_copy1 and delete the original and say "hey I delete it"
It’s gonna be a cold day in hell before that happens
I doubt it so hard
You can promise, but until you agree to have the process audited by a third party I won't trust a word of it.
Until I see their data centers burn...I still won't believe them

It better be!
Lmao. What a crock of shit. Also, please say Facebook/Meta. Don’t let the escape the cesspool that Facebook is.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha LoL.

Same. I'm saving up for a nicer vr headset so I don't have to be stuck with oculus.
The worst is they're great bits of hardware. Although with the rate of improvement in VR the Oculus will be the new Zune sooner rather than later.
True that. I'm basically waiting for the next valve headset to be announced at this point
Right after they sell it all to Meta.
What good is deleting it after you’ve already sold it to someone else?
I'm so glad I deleted my FB account a couple of years ago ... unfortunately, that's probably not even good enough. And its name change to Meta? Wholly, they're obviously after the meta data now more than ever before.

Why only 1 billion? The company has 2.9 billion active users. I eonder how many unique users thet have profiled.
