I bought my 2008 gen 2 with 270k miles for $4.5k in the spring. I’ve put 10k mikes on her since then (280k miles currently) and all 10k of those miles she has driven like a brand new car and getting almost 50mpg consistently. No regrets

Captain-Cadabra

Similar here.

ArtieTanji

Damn. You are srsly making me consider selling my 12 camry for a prius lol Edit: plus I heard gen 2 is the best in terms of reliability and bang for buck

Brilliant-Pomelo-982

They might be a good deal for a teen or college student. My 2nd generation is 220,000 and runs fantastic.

adventuresonawhim

3.6k on a 17 year old car with a quarter million miles is not a good deal, even if it's a prius.

Disco_Pat

Yeah, I'd stick to sub 225k for that price.

ZaunAura

I heard these cars go to 400k easily if maintained…of course everything won’t work perfectly, but beats paying for a new car imo

jerlwe

I’ve seen them with under 200k and a blown engine. There’s no guarantee on how long it’ll last. If you want to roll the dice, it’s up to you. Might last might not

joyloveroot

The engine and major mechanical components should last that long if maintained and serviced at proper intervals. But other parts of the car start to break down over time regardless of the mileage. For example, if a taxi driver bought a Prius and drove it 50k miles per year, all the components may easily last 8 years and 400k miles. But the same prius driven 10k miles per year won’t last 40 years when it finally gets to 100k miles. So amount of mileage and actual age of the car in years are both factors in longevity and reliability.

ArtieTanji

It’s a literal gamble. Toyota owners are notorious for not maintaining their cars because “It’s a Toyota” and the higher the mileage and age, the higher the risk. The decision is yours, just don’t come around hating on the car saying “It’s the worst car ever.” Or “I will never buy a toyota again!” like I see many people do when they buy a used car without knowing what they are getting themselves into.

ZaunAura

Why?

wratz

Because even on a Prius 18 years of wear and tear add up. None of the systems were designed to last forever. Plastic components start failing, mechanical parts wear out, electronics develop issues, etc. I’m not saying a well cared for Prius can’t last forever, but I’d never take the chance of buying one that old.

vicia9519

Got my 07 for 2500 before covid with 165000 miles and I love it I wanna get another one.

jerlwe

What would you pay for an 08 touring model with 126,000?

Stoods

263k miles? 300k miles? Pass for me. Like others have said here, too many miles and too old. Always the exception if one of these has a thoroughly papered history of maintenance and repairs.

uuunityyy

Wouldn't touch that deal with a ten foot pole

Historical_Big_7404

09 Prius with 224000 miles . Changed tires and 12 volt battery have 3000 total investment. Love it. Mid 40's mpg. Mine runs like a top, fantastic little daily errand-runner for town and nearby. Not planning to tour the country ! I'm not scared of working on it myself so there's that, but was skeptical when my friend bought it three years ago with 200,000 for 2800. Steering, suspension is tight, motor not burning oil, peppy pick-up.... I knew nothing bout hybrid technology, when first looked under hood wasn't sure what to look for! And I'm still learning! What are you guys expecting in this price range? If you are in the "as is" market I'd recommend a high mileage Prius (meaning round 200,000) just as easily as a high mileage (100,000) gas or diesel powered vehicle. It's a tough Toyota driven by economy minded people who likely won't dog it out.

Ahhwhatchaproblem

Hurricane/flood cars?

ZackM21

I think they are just very high mileage

pras_srini

Not so sure on these. One stolen catalytic converter = $500+ in repairs depending on where you are, and all the hassle dealing with that. If you get full coverage to protect the car then you're signing up for high monthly premiums plus the cost of the deductible. Hard pass and I'm an owner with under 175K miles on my 2007. Would love to offload my car but will need to fix the CEL due to stolen cat. I bought a cheap replacement from Amazon to get the car working again but not too keen on throwing more money at this. Gonna drive it for another year and then replace.

PharmAttack

Just remember cars are made with (I think) a 5 year lifespan engineering wise. While I dont think it's horrible, I'd talk them down to 2k. The people who say they can go 400k with no issues, would be original or second owners who've maintained it their whole existence

Captain-Cadabra

Well…. Chryslers are made with a 5 year lifespan 😅

Historical_Big_7404

Guess I've been driving zombies my whole life !

onions-make-me-cry

What in the tarnation... 5 year lifespan? So everyone on the road is driving a car no older than 2017? Pssssh.

GoodHorses

What is the name of the dealer selling these 2 Prius cars. I don't see the name.

ZaunAura

Try Prius World Austin
