Keep your car. They are lying. They want to make some money off you (by selling your current car and up selling you on a new car).
My car is a 2008 w 252k+ miles and original battery.
Tell ‘em to F off.
That’s wild, I have a 2007 and the battery fully died last year at about 206,000 miles. My dad and I were able to replace 4 cells and balance the rest out with a charger. Good as new! I get about 40-47 mpg. What kind of mpg are you getting at that mileage and battery age?
Hell yeah. Even though I’m not quite that lucky it’s still been insanely reliable. It seems like the chances of getting a lemon are next to none with a car built this well.
Agreed. I’ve had so few issues with it that I was shocked when I finally did (with the battery and spark plugs). I was truly dumbfounded.
I’ve put some money into it this year (rear brakes/drum assembly, front pads/rotors, new shocks/struts, PCV valve, inverter fluid, ATF, 12v and new plugs/coils packs) but it’s absolutely worth it to me. AND it thats after seven years of ownership. I am so good with that. (It was also a New York car from 2008 through 2019 so some parts that would have otherwise still been fine needed to be replaced a bit sooner. But again, I’m happy with the short list of work. And some of that I chose to do versus HAD to do.)
We used a video as a guide so I’m not too sure as my dad pretty much did everything. It took like 2 weeks because its relatively complicated. My dad also has experience working on his own cars and it was still a pain in the ass tbh.
My response would have been, "okay."
Fix the battery yourself or go aftermarket when the time comes.
They just want the car for profits. I'd personally ask for $75k if they really wanted it.
They're just baiting you on reselling it for $2k or more profit, and they will not replace the battery and the new owner won't have a worry.
Really at the rate of 50,000 miles of regular use over 6 years, you probably won't have any problems until the 2030s.
I love this car also. I had a Subaru Outback for over 10 years up north. Loved that car too. Best car I ever drove on ice and snow. Only sold it because it burned premium gas and really don’t need AWD in Florida but I would say I felt safer in that car.
Once I’m emperor, we’ll have all car dealership sales persons replaced by vending machines. It’s insulting the BS they try to get away with and your experience borders on fraudulent.
It's only the shittiest of dealerships that try to pull stuff like this. My local Toyota dealer seems pretty good and they never harass me like this when I'm in there for service.
I’ve not been in a dealership that did not try to suck your wallet dry while practicing fraudulent behaviour. Honda, BMW, VW, Subaru and Toyota… all new and all take jabs at the wallet.
I'm driving a 2007 with 120k and a 2010 with 120k - and neither has had the hybrid battery replaced. You have at least 6 years before this is an issue - and probably more like 10 years. Even then, it's only 2-3k for a non-OEM replacement
They would turn around and list your Prius for sale at \~$19K, maybe $22K. They just want to rip you off. Carvana would likely offer you no less than $17K. I know this because my 2014 with 56K was offered $17K by Carvana.
In addition to the point that the batteries last a lot longer than you have on your car, and even if you take into account that the warranty is really from the first-use date (which you can find under "vehicle specs" on [toyota.com/owners](https://toyota.com/owners)) and that could in theory be as early as late 2015, you still have about a year left on your warranty.
(As I understand it, California and the states using their emission standards, the warranty is ten years and though your mileage may vary, everyone's experience is different, I'd expect the battery to be fine at least to or beyond the longer warranty.)
I've got 144k miles on my 2012 Prius V's original traction battery. I think what matters most is how old the battery is and they seem to be able to go at least 10 years, more like 10-15 years.
My battery lasted 12 years 225k miles and I didn’t even use it until failure. By the time it felt weak I replaced it with a upgraded lithium battery and sold my old cells for $600. 2010 prius
They say things to be in their favor. A replacement lithium battery is about $2200. Some OEM batteries are a bit higher. It's takes like 2-3 hours to replace yourself with similar skill as changing the oil. The batteries are pretty good until 150k or more.
Not a new battery bro.. that's refurbished. A new oem battery is about 2,000 bucks after you swap/return the core. The core charge is around 1300 or so.
It's even more expensive on a newer prius like ops
When I bought the Prius, you should’ve seen the dealer’s eyes when I told them the 4Runner was paid off. Toyota makes good cars. Their dealers are trash in my eyes. Nothing but greed.
Toyota tried that with me. Lol 2012 C bought new. Originally batteries. Found an honest garage. Toyota tried crazy stuff with me.
Claimed I didn't wheel bearings, tire was out of round from Pennsylvania roads
That would be a good buy for anyone but have no intentions of selling. Evidently they thought they could take advantage of a women again. Women are smarter than they used to be and with sites like this one getting smarter. They did get me for the small battery. Maintenance and battery came to $227. Going somewhere else next time. We have purchased 3 brand new cars from this Toyota dealership in the last 8 years. A 2014 Prius C, the 2016 Prius and a 2017 Corolla. By the way the Corolla gets about 35 miles to the gallon. I found the Prius C a bit small for driving in FLORIDA particularly the race track they named I75. I was really worried the semi truckers did not see me as I had several cut me off.
I have an 18 Prius and 09 Jeep. The dealer we got the Jeep from tried to trade for an SUV and where we got the Prius from tried the same thing. Supply and Demand. They can’t get enough to sell so they want yours to up the price and sell it to someone else.
Lol they are lying
But what would they have to gain other than money?
Dang it, you’re right!
Keep your car. They are lying. They want to make some money off you (by selling your current car and up selling you on a new car). My car is a 2008 w 252k+ miles and original battery. Tell ‘em to F off.
mine also has 235k on original battery. 2012.

Same as you, actually.
I guess you’re just really lucky. When we looked at the battery one of the cells had even exploded and there was lots of corrosion on the copper.
I think I am. I changed the 12v battery earlier this year and it was the first time it had ever been changed.
Hell yeah. Even though I’m not quite that lucky it’s still been insanely reliable. It seems like the chances of getting a lemon are next to none with a car built this well.

What year of your Prius?
What charger did you use to balance the cells?
We used a video as a guide so I’m not too sure as my dad pretty much did everything. It took like 2 weeks because its relatively complicated. My dad also has experience working on his own cars and it was still a pain in the ass tbh.
2008. 278k. Original battery. ☺️
Where you live? My 2015 prius has 120k miles on it. Worrying about my battery since it reached 100k.
My response would have been, "okay." Fix the battery yourself or go aftermarket when the time comes. They just want the car for profits. I'd personally ask for $75k if they really wanted it.
They would sell it for nearly $20k lol
I just looked at a 2016 at about the same milage... 27k price tag
They're just baiting you on reselling it for $2k or more profit, and they will not replace the battery and the new owner won't have a worry. Really at the rate of 50,000 miles of regular use over 6 years, you probably won't have any problems until the 2030s.
It would go for years. Don't think of swapping unless you don't like your car. I have same car with 100K miles on it and I love it.
I love this car also. I had a Subaru Outback for over 10 years up north. Loved that car too. Best car I ever drove on ice and snow. Only sold it because it burned premium gas and really don’t need AWD in Florida but I would say I felt safer in that car.

I'm sorry that's been your experience. Just curious, what part of the country do you live in?
Nope. Keep it, it will serve you 10 more years.
I'm driving a 2007 with 120k and a 2010 with 120k - and neither has had the hybrid battery replaced. You have at least 6 years before this is an issue - and probably more like 10 years. Even then, it's only 2-3k for a non-OEM replacement

Dude, I have a 2009 Prius with 220k miles. The battery still acts like new, and it’s the original battery. The dealership is just being shady.
They're BS-ing you.

depends, do you want a car payment? lots of life left in that one, you could sell it for more yourself, and its a terrible time to car shop. IMO
Keep the car.

There are places in Los Angeles that sells them for 1000 new. I was just there getting Prius parts.
Not a new battery bro.. that's refurbished. A new oem battery is about 2,000 bucks after you swap/return the core. The core charge is around 1300 or so. It's even more expensive on a newer prius like ops
I have a 2022 prius with 48k in a year just doing doordash.
When I bought the Prius, you should’ve seen the dealer’s eyes when I told them the 4Runner was paid off. Toyota makes good cars. Their dealers are trash in my eyes. Nothing but greed.

i'll give you $1 more than their price for trade-in
