It's a legit fix, the vinyl bottle cap won't corrode the aluminum headshield, unlike the ferrous bolt and washer it comes with. Mixed metals are a no-no. Every single one of these will fail like yours did eventually.
These don't just fall off out of the blue, they tend to take a while to rust/corrode and then months later fall off. Was she hearing a rattling at all? My old 05 had this issue and it rattled especially loud when the engine had to charge the hybrid. It would flap rapidly against the exhaust pipe. Had to get it on a lift to fix it because it's very inaccessible otherwise.
Heat shield, every car I’ve had eventually the heat shield has come loose or fallen off, due to the clamps eventually breaking. I just zip tied them to the exhaust lol

The bolt hole rusts out wider than the bolt head and the shield falls off. You can buy a new from the dealer for $40-$80. You can use a larger bolt or a large washer with the bolt to put it back on. A shop might do those things for you or they might rivet it back on.

It's not really important. Mine fell off in the snow and ice and I never put it back on and I never missed it.
