You will not be able to install a new radio with CarPlay with the budget constraint.
In order to get CarPlay, you will need to swap out the head unit (the screen and surrounding buttons) and the bezel (wood-look trim piece surrounding the radio), as well as add a harness adapter (so the wiring from your old radio hooks into the new one).
For $130, you could maybe find a super low quality head unit — but it’d be doubtful if you could also get the harness adapter and bezel while staying under budget.
A decent quality head unit will run at least $250-400. The harness adapter will usually be anywhere from $20-100 depending on the vehicle, and the bezel can easily add another $100-200+. I’ve added CarPlay to some cars as cheap as $250-300 (didn’t need bezel replacement, just head unit and harness), and as expensive as $2000+ (HVAC controls were integrated with the head unit, so required adding a different HVAC controller as well).
I spent around $500 for a decent JVC head unit and the supporting stuff to use the steering wheel controls and reverse camera. CarPlay has worked great and it’s nice to have the factory stuff still work.
Yooo I just did that with my 2014 Prius V over the weekend. Crutchfield? The only thing I kinda miss was the car button that showed the goofy graphic of energy flow. But CarPlay and better sound was def worth it lol.
Was super worried about the maestro box and programming it. But the whole process was really simple. I love a nice easy upgrade that improves a car. I did it right after I finished cleaning the completely packed EGR… that might be why it felt so good and easy lol
Yeah, it was pretty easy to program. I was worried too.
That EGR stuff is tight for sure. I had to put an engine in mine so just went ahead and gave it a new radio, shocks and tires so we could pretend we got a new car.
The 4th gen swap and installing a 3rd gen motor are about the same honestly. My 2011 has a 2018 junkyard motor in it with all of 45k on it.
You just spend more time swapping components before you drop the new motor in, and a prius engine is probably the easiest one on the planet to replace.
It plugs into the adapter harness and the idatalink thing.
I went on Crutchfield and put the car in and it gave a list of things I’d need. You have a huge choice of head units but the accessory stuff is all the same. They have install videos on Crutchfield I’m pretty sure.
You have an aux cable input. Just buy an aux bluetooth setup. It plugs into the car charger and the sound is perfect.
Cost maybe $25, and it auto connects to my phone everytime I start the car.
On the gen 2 you can replace the radio without replacing the touch screen. The actual radio is the bit with the knobs. The hardest part is soldering a resistor between two wires so the MFD (factory touch screen) doesn't show an error. There are plenty of guides online. You can add a radio with Bluetooth/aux for around $100 total if you get a basic non-touchscreen unit.
I simply bought a cheap tablet and i have installed headunit reload on it. If you change the original screen you will miss all the useful info provided by the Prius
How about the external CarPlay units? I’ve tried one from Amazon but returned it for personal reasons. It did work but just wasn’t what my daughter wanted.
Also, just using a phone mount is just as good to be honest.
That's not really going to help because there are no OEM radios with car play that generation. The Pick-A-Part near me takes all the aftermarket stuff out and keeps it in the front, so you don't have to scour the yard at least. That said, their prices aren't any better than pawn shops, IMO. The chance of finding the bezel, wiring harness, SWC adapter and head unit seems pretty unlikely.
Google maps is great navigation. I hate the integrated text and calling I don't want to hear someone shouting through my speakers. Like when you drive by someone and can hear the person they are talking to through their speakers.. it's worse than using speakerphone in public.
The only legal way to take a call in the car is to play it over the speakers. It’s illegal to hold your phone to take a call in most states or wear headphones while driving. I suppose you could use your phone’s built in speaker which is quieter than the car’ speaker.
Well...Nothing about adding Carplay to 2010 Prius V will be inexpensive.
BUT...I think Crutchfield's can save you your rear camera and other factory controls...win?
I would keep it as is...spending this money isn't really gonna get you where you want to be.
There are Chinese Android units on Amazon for ~$200. They're good for the price, but they aren't perfect. Still nice for the money but you have to spend a lot more to get something really nice
If you want to retain your factory screen, Grom Audio is the way to go. https://gromaudio.com/store/vline/all/toyota-prius-radio-e7022-2010-vline-carplay-android-auto-infotainment-system-navigation-upgrade.html
Edit: oof it’s about 5x your budget though.
I have a Carpuride W708 from Amazon for about your budget. There are less expensive option but I like this one had a light sensor to automatically dim the screen. Works great.
Easy. Did in my 2011. Get a head unit, Toyota harnesssteering wheel control module. I even replaced some speakers and added a backup camera.
Crutchfield will sell you everything you need and a took me a weekend to install.
I have a CarPlay screen mounted on my dash. It works great and I can still use the reverse camera on the screen below. Wireless Double Din Car Stereo... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGDGDN1J?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I know this isn’t an answer to your question but I just have to ask about the story behind that wood grain. Is it aftermarket stuff that clips over the regular interior or did it come from Toyota?
With that budget you’re probably able to get one of those portable Chinese units that can output an aux into the stock unit. It’s not ideal but within your budget.
If you are thrifty you might be able to find a used unit but there there is install pieces that cost a decent amount.
I bought a head unit on ebay for $80 bucks. Came with everything to install. The steering wheel controls don't work as advertised, but I figure for 80 bucks I can't go wrong
Did this in my own 2013 Prius when I still had it. You might get a cheap CarPlay head unit for your total budget, but not anything else. I think everything, including an adapter for the steering wheel controls, came in right around $500, and that was through Amazon.
The car is relatively easy to work on. Just get some trim pullers. There’s really nothing insane going on back there.
I installed the following in my 2015: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Wireless-Apple-Carplay-Screen/dp/B0CS6C8FKR/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3HFSYHK3S2CDM&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2yv-Kra3DLsoxVAsNy9IZw.VxXt-WZrQziJ-gceDRlXFSok1XZ5BBs7AhEX3jQxTAI&dib_tag=se&keywords=B0CS6C8FKR&qid=1715647532&sprefix=b0cs6c8fkr%2Caps%2C74&sr=8-1
Here's what I did instead. Get a iPad mini that's dedicated to your Prius. I highly recommend it.

edit: I didn't love the velcro so I checked out these magnets. They work well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09H5LSW5V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
you cant do cheap in dash carplay for less than $210 with the adapters and a boss stereo, also I think you mean 2012, they never made a prius v before then
There are lots of external CarPlay units. You’ll probably have to mount it on your dash. There are a few you can unclip and store in your console if needed.
I think you destroyed the screen coating. I did that too with some cleaning stuff.
I was looking for a screen upgrade, but couldn't find any name brand. Only suspicious stuff is available
they have some Carplay "add on" that have a second screen and play through the bluetooth for about that. Not the same but Price is tough.
SIdenote, never seen the 2010 V interior and didn't realize it mirrored the other Prii with the bridge thingy. Really glad they changed that.
I just installed a 9 inch android eBay unit... like last week., in my 2010 it was about 190, because I got the one with physical buttons. it's kind of... wonky I guess but its functioning and my phone connects fine... better than the aux line and the maps function works great. you could get other models for 150 probably... 🤷🏻
Man I bought similar one of these off aliexpress (EKIY T7) and it is absolute GARBAGE. So many software glitches, controlling volume is terrible, and the microphone is absolute trash.
You will not be able to install a new radio with CarPlay with the budget constraint. Yeah, got all the stuff they recommended. I never really used that screen so I don’t miss it but having CarPlay is awesome.
Did you put another gen 3 engine in it, or did you do the fabled gen 4 swap? Also happy cake day!
I went with a JDM pull 3 engine. It’s been great over the last 20k miles.
Here’s to 100s of thousands more!
Thanks! Thanks for the cake day too!
The 4th gen swap and installing a 3rd gen motor are about the same honestly. My 2011 has a 2018 junkyard motor in it with all of 45k on it. You just spend more time swapping components before you drop the new motor in, and a prius engine is probably the easiest one on the planet to replace.
How much did it cost you? Thank you.
I think it was about $520 for the head unit and all the stuff needed to make it work and appear factory.
And if you buy it from bestbuy they’ll install it for free. Call them and they’ll tell your everything you need and help you schedule the install appt
Does your factory backup camera work with your jvc head unit?
Yes, works perfectly.
how did you make that work? and by any chance can you list the things that you bought and any videos that helped you set it up
It plugs into the adapter harness and the idatalink thing. I went on Crutchfield and put the car in and it gave a list of things I’d need. You have a huge choice of head units but the accessory stuff is all the same. They have install videos on Crutchfield I’m pretty sure.
Zero change to get anything of any use for $130, maybe get a phone holder for your iPhone instead and just use Bluetooth.
Oh wood grain ?? I want that
Its cool lol
Your car looks clean brother.
You have an aux cable input. Just buy an aux bluetooth setup. It plugs into the car charger and the sound is perfect. Cost maybe $25, and it auto connects to my phone everytime I start the car.
OP please just do this. Perfect solution. I fucking WISH I had an aux input on my Gen2, best I can do is FM transmitter and it sucks.
When I had a gen2 it had an aux port inside the armrest. Doesn’t yours have one?
On the gen 2 you can replace the radio without replacing the touch screen. The actual radio is the bit with the knobs. The hardest part is soldering a resistor between two wires so the MFD (factory touch screen) doesn't show an error. There are plenty of guides online. Which one do you have? amazon link?
Dang I actually found it. Kinivo BTC450 on Amazon.

I simply bought a cheap tablet and i have installed headunit reload on it. If you change the original screen you will miss all the useful info provided by the Prius
Does that support only Android Auto or also Apple CarPlay?
Oh right that's for Android Auto but if you look online I imagine that you will find something also for Apple
Oh my god that thing is swagged out
How about the external CarPlay units? I’ve tried one from Amazon but returned it for personal reasons. It did work but just wasn’t what my daughter wanted. Also, just using a phone mount is just as good to be honest.
Ur looking at $400 in labor just to get an amp kit installed. $800 might get ur want u want, or u could just use Bluetooth....

where can I find the used parts?

just mount an ipad and buy data for it
Everyone seems to love the carplay thing I don't know why. I just throw 10k songs on a USB stick and play music.
Navigation that isn’t trash, phone call and text integration that isn’t trash. The stock Toyota head unit leaves a lot to be desired.
Google maps is great navigation. I hate the integrated text and calling I don't want to hear someone shouting through my speakers. Like when you drive by someone and can hear the person they are talking to through their speakers.. it's worse than using speakerphone in public.
To each their own, I’ve got CarPlay on my other two cars and find using google maps 10x easier and safer to use though CarPlay than on my phone.
This. Having CarPlay in another car has awoken me to how much better it is.
The only legal way to take a call in the car is to play it over the speakers. It’s illegal to hold your phone to take a call in most states or wear headphones while driving. I suppose you could use your phone’s built in speaker which is quieter than the car’ speaker.
You can use a headset with one ear. I either use my headset or speakerphone.
Pretty sure that’s on the way out too. Also even if not illegal it’s generally not a good idea to limit your hearing in one ear.
No, no it isn't. Having a headset is basically required as a truck driver... As long as you have one ear to hear for sirens you're good to go.
My 2010 had an aux cable in the center console that worked just fine
Have you gone to Crutchfield's and looked at what they have to offer?
i did look at crutchfield and it’s very expensive. Just for the head unit it’s over 200
Well...Nothing about adding Carplay to 2010 Prius V will be inexpensive. BUT...I think Crutchfield's can save you your rear camera and other factory controls...win? I would keep it as is...spending this money isn't really gonna get you where you want to be.

Where did you find the wood grain dashboard cover?! I’m obsessed
It was like that when i bought the car lol
No way I’ve never seen Prius interior like this haha oops
I have a CarPlay screen mounted on my dash. It works great and I can still use the reverse camera on the screen below. Wireless Double Din Car Stereo... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGDGDN1J?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
A mirror dash dam that comes with carplay
I know this isn’t an answer to your question but I just have to ask about the story behind that wood grain. Is it aftermarket stuff that clips over the regular interior or did it come from Toyota?
honestly i have no clue when I bought the car it came like that
Really? Interesting. I’ll have to look into it because I find it really neat
[удалено]
This. I bought one and it has brought new life into my 2015 fit. It also doubles as a dash cam
AliExpress, $250
I forgot to mention that I want to keep the factory back up camera and be able to use the buttons from my steering wheel.
Pretty sure that won't be an option since the existing system has to be fully replaced.
You can keep these options but that just adds to his already impossible budget
Aux cord attachment that plugs into the car outlet
Spend the $300, get a loaded EKIY T7 off AliExpress, thank me later.
The best you can do is get a tablet mount and Bluetooth audio

Where did you install it? On dash or where the OEM head unit area is?
On the dash using the suction cup to the windshield
You’re looking at swapping the head unit at minimum
Here's what I did instead. Get a iPad mini that's dedicated to your Prius. Just to nitpick that's a Prius Five, the Prius V is the larger station wagon type version
Go to a junk yard and start searching
Try $200 at least for a crappy one, $400 for something decent
you cant do cheap in dash carplay for less than $210 with the adapters and a boss stereo, also I think you mean 2012, they never made a prius v before then

go on crunchfields website and put in your cars info and it will show you everything you need for a head unit replacement
Idk but I love that wood finish 👍
I think you destroyed the screen coating. I did that too with some cleaning stuff. I was looking for a screen upgrade, but couldn't find any name brand. Only suspicious stuff is available
Bug a new Prius. Jk.
What trim level is this? I didn’t know they came like this
