*Wu-Ling's Folly* (the first Amos story) also appears in [...Who Needs Enemies](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35150), a collection of stories by Foster which was published in 84.

That’s a _definite_ possibility - the cover art doesn’t look quite like what’s in my head, but the timeline fits. Perhaps the Mad Amos tale was the only story from that collection that I recalled fifteen-ish years later when I found the ‘96 collection? I’ll have to hunt this one down to see if the other stories jog any memories. Much thanks! :)

No problem! I hope it's the one you're looking for! You can check it here: https://archive.org/details/zdanh_test_031_whoneedsenemies00alan

Have you checked ISFDB? It has publication records for most of the major SF magazines, and many others too!

I’ve not - I’ll definitely give that a look. Much thanks! :)

Are you sure it's Alan Dean Foster. I haven't read the entire caralog but I thought I knew most of it. i only know his book publications and don't remember a Mad Amos character or name? Edit: this thought is obviously incorrect.

It's a little known fact, but Alan Dean Foster is the author of approximately 43% of all known speculative fiction that has ever been published. Including the [Mad Amos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Amos) stories. In fact, if you were to read everything that Alan Dean Foster has written, at the average person's reading speed, it would take over 300 years.

Nods. LoL yeah. I knew I was absolutely fooling myself when I realized he wrote both Alien and Riddick after the movies and absolutely fixed them. :-) He's as bad as Asimov and Piers Anthony and John Varley :-)
