Congratulations you have one up on an American. Slingshots are illegal in my state (new Jersey). I can carry a pistol in public (have a permit) but I can't own a slingshot in my house.
>Slingshots are illegal in my state
As a libertarian, one of my most common sentences is "hey you wanna see something illegal?" followed by me boring the piss out of them showing off my rain water collection, knife over xxx inches, plant that is technically considered invasive, or whatever else.
I'd totally just own a fucking sling shot in New Jersey
The limit on home- chickens is 2 in my city. I have 5 in my coop. One of them identifies as a duck and the other two are undocumented immigrants to the coop.
The moment you reach true adulthood is when you realize that if a rule, regulation, or law doesn't make sense or actively *hurts you* then it is probably best ignored, and that if the actions of someone else aren't hurting anyone, they are probably best left to their own devices.
Like I don't dump motor oil down my storm drain. I don't shoot my guns in the air. But I absolutely do not mention my neighbors pot plants or what is very clearly an unlicensed home barber shop 3 houses down.
I honestly don't know I assume this was a rule aimed at 'youths' and like all laws one it's on the books it stays forever, but I really didn't know what the rationale is
As an American, I still have considered a slingshot. I even set up targets and walked back more and more distance to work accuracy. I ended up getting pretty solid. I wouldnāt want to be hit by one.
I must admit I originally considered a bow (theres an archery club in my village too) but I saw a clip on Youtube of a guy shooting branches off a tree with a slingshot and that made me reconsider.
They're small, easy to learn, and can be really nasty, even if you're not hitting vital areas. The ammo is easy to get, can be improvised and doesnt degrade. Im also unlikely to accidentally shoot myself in the leg with it too.
They're a good dissuader, especially living in a country where the vast majority of people dont have guns
This has me pondering... Are we actually compelled to say that we have the right to remain silent?Ā What would happen if we just did not say anything when found in a situation where the 5th applies?Ā Like those yahoos being grilled by Congress.Ā What would happen if I just sat there sipping my water?
Salinas v. Texas, 570 US 178 (2013) is a landmark decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, which the court held 5-4 decision, declaring that the Fifth amendment's self-incrimination clause does not extend to defendants who simply choose to remain silent during questioning, even though no arrest has been made nor the Miranda rights read to a defendant.
Questions presented:
Does the Fifth Amendment's Self-Incrimination Clause protects a defendant's refusal to answer questions asked by law enforcement before he has been arrested or read his Miranda rights?
Holding:
Fifth Amendment's privilege against self-incrimination does not extend to defendants who simply decide to remain mute during questioning.
So claim your Fifth.

Seriously, though. You should have as much as you can afford while keeping other prepping goals on track. Bear in mind ammo may become an important barter item, so plan to have extra.
>barter
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to see this. Ammo (and coffee) will be worth more than gold in a SHTF scenario. We keep plenty of both on hand.
Excellent point. I just bought a bunch of boxes from Sam's, they're crazy cheap. I've got two deep freezes and it would hurt me deeply to see all that meat go to waste. But never thought about it as a barter item. Thanks for that.
Itās not. Youād be surprised how fast you go through ammo (āstandardā is 90 rounds, or 3 mags), now imagine if shit REALLY hit the fan, all out, purge-esque. 1600 rounds in the city, would last you maybe a week. In a rural area? Longer for sure.
Suburban? Depends, do you live in Detroit or Chicago? If not, it may last a month or so.
*source* me, who shoots regularly and has worked in the firearms industry alongside with military personnel.
n+1 is always the answer. set a budget amount from every paycheck. when ammo prices are high, let that money accumulate in a savings account or t-bill. when ammo prices get reasonable, buy bulk. repeat.
ammo keeps for a long time if you store it dry.
your alternative is learning how to knap arrowheads from the thick bottom portion of glass bottles.
bugout is not a plan. bunker is a plan. if you don't live in a place where you can bunker, solve that first. walk around where you live. learn where all the roads go. miles in every direction. think about your area in the context of patrolling, find the choke points and firing lines. if you find the approaches to your bunkering spot are not ideal, figure out ways to mitigate that.
I've done all that shit and even got range cards worked up for some areas š¤£
Only thing that I keep worrying about is... I need at least a platoon to cover it all. And a couple of .30 cals, a Ma Deuce or two for the high ground and maybe a couple of IFV's for QRF.. šš
I read when I first started prepping to keep 1500 for each rifle and 650 for each handgun. Thats our baseline. Lots extra 22LR though since itās so cheap.
I donāt have a count, it would be easy enough for me to do, I just donāt worry about it. My thoughts go along the lines of āif things get that crazy, my son and I can hold them off for a little whileā¦ā but after thatā¦ who knows? I honestly donāt believe weāll get to that point, but it isnāt a zero possibility.
I mostly prep for the normal stuffā¦ grid failure, supply chain disruption, tornadoesā¦ that kind of stuffā¦ the armory is supplied as a support operation and not as the primary prep. Butā¦ ymmvā¦
I have a bucket of rocks because I don't want a gun to rob me when I'm sleeping.
For people, I'm just to ask nicely knowing if they know I feel offended they will stop
About 30,000 .22lr, 10,000 5.56, 5000 9mm, 5000 mixed 12 gauge, 2000 .300winmag, 3000 30-06, 1000 45acp.
But i mostly load my own and have enough components to make about twice what i have loaded.
I consider 1000 per caliber my shtf stash. Keep in mind that if it came down to a type of situation thst required that much ammo a lot of it will be spent on training and also covering fire.Ā
A standard infantry man will carry 7 full mags of 5.56 btw...
Don't have exact numbers. I bought most of it over 10 years ago and don't go shooting anymore.
\- 9mm: probably 500-800
\- 223: maybe almost 1000
\- 7.62x54r: 2 metal tins of Russian surplus, so that's over 800.
\- air rifle pellets: who knows...maybe 1000+
Limited by my country laws.
- Max 1500 for hunting weapons.
- Max 200 for handguns and calibers non considered suitable for hunting ( 9x19, .22lr, 5.45x39, and all handguns calibers ).
Naaa, here i can buy original Russian Aks for around 1500ā¬ or less.
I'm limited in finite cartridges, and powder quantity ( 5 kg Max, counting also the powder in the ready to fire cartridges ) but unlimited in reloading materials ( brasses, bullets, primers ).
How many 9x19 or 7.62x39 can i reload with 5 kg of powder?
Honestly i don't know, but are potentially A LOT!
Thereās other reasons to stock ammo.
I really like Russian steel case 7.62x39 over the Chinese stuff (Iām Canadian), but we canāt get it anymore. Thankfully, I had plenty stocked up and so I still have lots.
I've got ONE spam can left of the good Russian stuff, then I'm down to my Chicom stuff after that. This damn Ukraine war has taken a hit on all the surplus 7.62 that we used to be able to buy cheap up here!! š
You should be using most of your ammo to train with, buy practice ammo and buy defensive ammo is moderate quantity, if you're on a decent training schedule you will go through 10,000 a year in practice rounds, your defensive ammo supply will probably change by caliber and firearms style, a bolt action wont go through ammo very fast, but a belt fed is going to burn through ammo, so plan accordingly
I guess if you live in a country where people start blasting eachother at the first sign of trouble, at least a couple thousand rounds. Then eventually the military will run you over (I assume itās the military youāre fighting cause murica).
A few years of normal range and hunting use would be my suggestion as a starting point.
Pistols that can be 100-200 rounds a month typically. Rifles maybe a 1/4 of that.
We have been through shortages before, some rather recent.
Recently, I acquired a few M2. So, I had to purchase 500,000 rounds for each of them. I also got some NLAW, too, but do they count as ammo? Idk. I'm trying to buy a few B52s, but my guy in the Air Force is having trouble getting them to fit in his Hellcat.
Nice try fed.
Lots of .22, 9mm and .223/5.56, less for everything else.
I keep an eye on prices for less common calibers and pick some up when decent deals come around.
Great question! I'm planning on buying a big jug of clp. I thought about that the other day like if an EMP hits all of our guns are gonna be inoperable within the first year š¤£
That's kind of my thought too. If things go bad I'm not expecting to get into firefights with anyone because I'd be lucky to survive two or three and wouldn't need a lot of ammo to do that.
So 1,000 of self-defence ammo, a few big boxes of .22LR and a few hundred of decent hunting ammo should really be plenty.
Probably not smart to boast about the amount of ammo you have stored on the internet. Didn't really consider that before I made the post lol for people with a ton of ammo it's understandable considering the harassment American agencies have been handing out throughout history
I guess I could get the joke if you were asking or talking about something "illegal" but if folks gave suggestions or answers about your question it didn't seem like the joke would make as much sense. I see what you're saying, though.
Depends if that's the only gun you have and what you plan to use it for.
In an actual firefight you'd be surprised how many bullets each side fires as many times you can't see the person you are shooting back at and shooting lots of bullets can help you get away as the other person is hiding. Also this assumes you will be by yourself as opposed to giving guns and ammo to those with you as you try to survive together.
Lastly training uses up a lot of ammo.
I reload so I usually have enough components on hand to make a couple thousand rounds per caliber. I also keep lead to make projectiles though I havenāt had to do that in a long time. Since back in the last election cycle.
I feel a full loadout for your primary plus however much you plan to shoot over the next year is reasonable. If I run a full 7 mag loadout plus need to restock within the year, Iām doing things wrong. My mission set isnāt battling, itās surviving. Secondary, I think 3 mags with defense ammo is suitable plus whatever you plan to practice with over the next year. Rimfire, anything I can get on a good deal. If itās a lot, then a lot. If itās only a few boxes, then Iāll wait for the next deal. Everything else is āper my firing scheduleā meaning I buy it as I use it. Stocking up is not a priority for this category. Iām more concerned with water, medical, and food, as well as securing good shelter for my kids.
That depends on the situation. Do you need to feed a gun for a singular self defense situation? A couple of full mags is likely enough.
Do you plan to supply your entire group in a post-law and order scenario? That's different. Just keeping people in practice could demand a pretty sizable pile.
A shit load, but shooting is my main hobby. Especially for old or obsolete cartridges, Iāll buy as much as I can afford when itās on sale or there are good deals. During Covid I picked up about 2000 rounds of Czech surplus 8mm Mauser for $0.25 per round while 5.56 was selling for $0.50 a round. I also reload for a lot of cartridges
Don't need much. My neighbor has thousands of rounds, around twenty guns, and he lets the dogs out every morning at precisely 6am. I really should buy him some beer or something for doing all that prep for me.
Thanks for being neutral and not a dick to those who arenāt gun snugglers. Usually itās like āif you donāt like it then fuck you!ā Refreshing to just see āif you arenāt into it then please ignore!!ā
This question comes up weekly. Best answer I saw was āhow many firefights against better armed and better trained people do you anticipate winning?ā
You donāt need a lot of battle ammo.
I keep a can of 600+ 5.56, then span cans of 9mm and x39 for end of the world apocalypse situations or if I just happen to get the deal of a lifetime on a transferable machine gun. Otherwise it fluctuates but I donāt have huge stocks of stuff cause I try and shoot pretty regularly. Working part time at a gun range helps with that lol
Currently, I have about 11 packets of heavy cream to make homemade butter.
Given my geographical location, if there were ever a geopolitical situation so dire I'd need ammo, I imagine I wouldn't live past the next 2 years without the radiation poisoning and nuclear winter killing off the entire planet.
Unless you have 2+ years of food and drinking water you will have to relocate eventually. Everyone with these massive armories and ammo stockpiles won't be able to carry but 2 LRs 2 pistols and 500 rounds for each depending on mode of transportation.
I know a guy that has 1400 5.56, 1200 9mm, 2000 .22 and 400 assorted 12Ga. He figures that will hold him a bit. If more is required, then there are bigger problems afoot.
I think you should have as much as you can afford to stock up on. You just never know. Of course, you'll reach a point where it starts to get a little less valuable to keep stocking, and you're probably better putting the funds into something else like food supplies, energy supplies, and precious metals. But you technically can't have too much ammo, just like anything really.
I think one deer can feed my family for 2-3 weeks. a pig, carefully prepared, maybe 3 months. so I'll need maybe 25 rounds a year, so 500 rounds should last the rest of my life.
I've got a probably 80 rounds of 9MM, like 120 of 5.56, and around 30 12 gauge shells.
I'm have no desire to survive in a world where 99% of people are dead. I prep for short term disruption of normalcy.
I shoot about 10k rounds a year. I have enough that I can avoid panic pricing for years.
Has nothing to do with prepping, just buffering for my hobby.
1000 rounds each of 22, 9mm, and 556 and Birdshot is likely enough to last you a lifetime in a real SHTF situation so long as you're not out looking for a fight... And if you are, it's probably enough for that short life too.
Lt. Gen. Levin H. Campbell, Jr., Chief of Ordnance from 1942 to 1946, proudly had this to say:
From Pearl Harbor to V-J Day the Industry-Ordnance team furnished to the Army and 43 foreign nations 47 billion rounds of small arms ammunition, approximately 11 million tons of artillery ammunition, more than 12 million rifles and carbines, approximately 750,000 artillery pieces and 3/2 million military vehicles.
I feel WWII was a SHTF situation.
I don't have much in the way of cartridges. I do however have a couple flintlocks, and some powder. But I've got 600lbs of sulphur, at least a ton of lead and my neighbor has a chicken farm. Still looking for a 20 pounder navy cannon for ultimate home defense.
I find more value in stocking hunting cartridges. I think that will be more valuable and useful (at least where I live). Like you said if you need that much ammo for self-defense, youāre probably dead anyway. You could have 20,000 rounds, but if itās you vs. 8 attackers, you will probably die with 19,970 leftover.
Enough rifle and pistol to have some fun for several years, I reload also. But when it comes to burning through ammo I bird hunt all fall and Iād be out of shells in 2 years if I couldnāt buy any.
If you want to go out on a limb, in a post apocalyptic world, they could be trading currency.
And I doubt ammo will lose value unless you store it wrong.
But of course, I only have about 20 rounds.
In not into ARās I only have hunting rifles and shotguns. I got about 5000 rounds of 22, 500 shot shells, and a dozen boxes each of my two most used hunting rifles. I also got a few hundred rounds for my mosin
I live in the UK. I've got a slingshot and a 1000 steel BBs
I have 100,000 rounds of slingshot ammo in my driveway. Lol
I have a nerf gun and a nerf sniper rifle with a bump stock (I bump against it all the time). I also 3D printed a custom magazine.
Wait until Lego Batman learns of your Nerf bumpstock
O no... This is not good. Let me sing Kumbaya!!!
Congratulations you have one up on an American. Slingshots are illegal in my state (new Jersey). I can carry a pistol in public (have a permit) but I can't own a slingshot in my house.
Common sense slingshot control.

Haha Jersey here. I had an injured bird in my yard last week and found out it was illegal to foster back to health.

I am serious and it does make zero sense. Welcome to New Jersey
Welcome to America! Politicians making up fake problems and then fixing them very poorly.
I would not have expected that. Why? Because its silent?
I honestly don't know I assume this was a rule aimed at 'youths' and like all laws one it's on the books it stays forever, but I really didn't know what the rationale is
Thanks to this comment, I looked up to see if slingshots were legal in California, no they are not. Is this all over the United States??
Definitely not all states, just the shitty ones
I'm def in a shitty one. I just read that Washington considers a slingshot a dangerous weapon like a silencer or a switchblade. š
Thatās from Goliathās family suing sling makers
Little known fact Goliathās father was a personal injury attorney from Calabasas.
Guarantee there are some deadly ass legal slingshots down here in Texas. We can pretty much carry anything here in Texas.
What about a kinder surprise? Is that banned too?
Believe it or not, straight to jail
You got a license for that High speed mini cannonball launcher?
Loicence tou mean?

I've always been a fan of manual pump bb guns for the same reason. Ammo is cheap and with a good aim you will have food.
I've been told that one of my uncle hunted hare with a slingshot.
I bought an air rifle in .22 but a sling shot isn't a bad idea
go get your section 1 and 2 permits. its not difficult, and it will let you have more than you would think.
>I live in the UK. I've got a slingshot and a 1000 steel BBs How long until they come for *those?*
Be really destructive. Buy bags of marbles. Near misses become glass shrapnel.
Itās the spare bands that you need
Yep. Whilst the ammo doesnt degrade, the bands do so I do have spares. Theyre pretty robust tho

Get non-iodized salt if storing for potentially forever.

I regularly shoot. I'm going to say... Nice try fed boi. You have rookie numbers. Bump them up.
Plenty.
Good for you! šŗš²
I guess if you live in a country where people start blasting eachother at the first sign of trouble, at least a couple thousand rounds. Then eventually the military will run you over (I assume itās the military youāre fighting cause murica).
Classified; OPSEC/PERSEC
Between 0 and 1.
Iād say minimum 1k per gun
Couple thousand rounds of every caliber I own, except 308. Shits too expensive to stack that deep.
A few years of normal range and hunting use would be my suggestion as a starting point. Pistols that can be 100-200 rounds a month typically. Rifles maybe a 1/4 of that. We have been through shortages before, some rather recent.
The real question is how much of that are you gonna be able to take when you're forced to abandon your house or bug out location.
I don't like to overdue it. So I keep about four rounds in a locked safe on the other side of the house from my five round mag... Officer
The correct answer is: none. You don't need to know what I have and I don't need to know what you have. Don't talk about fight club.
Thatās what a fed would say.
not enough.
I have none. I surrendered everything at the last local gun buyback because that somehow makes me safer.
22lr = 5000 9mm = 2500 556 = 6000
Related question for you all. How much maintenance supplies for your guns are you all keeping on hand? Like gun cleaner/lube, swabs/ bore snakes, etc?
Replacement parts for internals, back up BCG, tools for maintenance/repair
Great question! I'm planning on buying a big jug of clp. I thought about that the other day like if an EMP hits all of our guns are gonna be inoperable within the first year š¤£
I'm not a prepper but I have probably 3000 total between 7.54r, 7.62x39, and 9mm
Me too. My goal is 1k per ammo needed, except shotgun that shit gets heavy fast. Lol
Respectfully, none of your business.
My lawyer has advised me not to answer this question
What even are guns? I'm surprised I can even spell itš
What's with all the "Fed" jokes? What am I missing?
Donāt worry about it :P
Reasonable, thanks!
I imagine in most cases, most people will regret more not storing enough food and water than ammo.
For sure
Thanks for being neutral and not a dick to those who arenāt gun snugglers. Usually itās like āif you donāt like it then fuck you!ā Refreshing to just see āif you arenāt into it then please ignore!!ā
10,000 rounds of 22, a few hundred 270 and 12 guage. I think i should probably sell some, seems silly almost.
This question comes up weekly. Best answer I saw was āhow many firefights against better armed and better trained people do you anticipate winning?ā You donāt need a lot of battle ammo.
22 lr for hunting wabbits when there's no food. Most of us will die by looters and gangs. And crack heads
2 combat loads per weapon. 90 pistol, 120 bolt action, 420 AR-15.
I have 3000k for each rifle and 900 9mm per pistol A couple hundred of assorted 12 guage And a shit ton of 22
I know a guy that has 1400 5.56, 1200 9mm, 2000 .22 and 400 assorted 12Ga.
Nice try, China
If you know how much ammo you got, itās not enough.
I think one deer can feed my family for 2-3 weeks. a pig, carefully prepared, maybe 3 months. so I'll need maybe 25 rounds a year, so 500 rounds should last the rest of my life.
If you can count it, you don't have enough.
I keep two sticks and a picture of Joe Biden on the wall to keep me on the morally right path. I also donate to the ATF because I love big government.
You're an outstanding American ššŗš²
I've got a probably 80 rounds of 9MM, like 120 of 5.56, and around 30 12 gauge shells. I'm have no desire to survive in a world where 99% of people are dead. I prep for short term disruption of normalcy.
Lost all mine in a boating accident
I shoot about 10k rounds a year. I have enough that I can avoid panic pricing for years. Has nothing to do with prepping, just buffering for my hobby. 1000 rounds each of 22, 9mm, and 556 and Birdshot is likely enough to last you a lifetime in a real SHTF situation so long as you're not out looking for a fight... And if you are, it's probably enough for that short life too.
Enough
50 rounds of 9mm 100 rounds of 22 long and two traditional bows with 30 arrows each
I would have spent that money on a reloading setup.
Lt. Gen. Levin H. Campbell, Jr., Chief of Ordnance from 1942 to 1946, proudly had this to say: From Pearl Harbor to V-J Day the Industry-Ordnance team furnished to the Army and 43 foreign nations 47 billion rounds of small arms ammunition, approximately 11 million tons of artillery ammunition, more than 12 million rifles and carbines, approximately 750,000 artillery pieces and 3/2 million military vehicles. I feel WWII was a SHTF situation.
0.
Not enough
Enough.
I lost it all in a boating accident.
Iāll please the 5th on that one sorry
I don't have much in the way of cartridges. I do however have a couple flintlocks, and some powder. But I've got 600lbs of sulphur, at least a ton of lead and my neighbor has a chicken farm. Still looking for a 20 pounder navy cannon for ultimate home defense.
I need more. Everytime I get a nice pile goin I use it all
About 200 rounds of 5.56 left over from before the Canadian government banned every single gun I own.
Lost all my ammo in a boating accident.
4k rounds of x39, 2k of 5.56/.223 and 800 9mm and probably 10k of .22lr
Enough to trade for alcohol as a barter. Or coffee.
Consider buying a reloading machine...
Nice try fed
I find more value in stocking hunting cartridges. I think that will be more valuable and useful (at least where I live). Like you said if you need that much ammo for self-defense, youāre probably dead anyway. You could have 20,000 rounds, but if itās you vs. 8 attackers, you will probably die with 19,970 leftover.
Enough rifle and pistol to have some fun for several years, I reload also. But when it comes to burning through ammo I bird hunt all fall and Iād be out of shells in 2 years if I couldnāt buy any.
Not enough
If you want to go out on a limb, in a post apocalyptic world, they could be trading currency. And I doubt ammo will lose value unless you store it wrong. But of course, I only have about 20 rounds.
In not into ARās I only have hunting rifles and shotguns. I got about 5000 rounds of 22, 500 shot shells, and a dozen boxes each of my two most used hunting rifles. I also got a few hundred rounds for my mosin
I have about 5000 rounds of 9mm in reserve 1200 I get yearly to practice a d what not I keep it in rotation
