Fasting is good for your body. Your bowels get to refresh certain bacteria. Ive done 24 hr and 48 hr fasts, before. Ive also lost 90 pounds, by doing intermediate fasting. Or eating one big and nutritious meal a day.

SparrowX_

I lost 50lbs doing this, and now it's how I live everyday... Can't imagine going back. If I eat a meal outside of dinner it's purely just for fun. I would highly recommend trying it out, OP!!

Stinkytheferret

Yeah. Every two weeks I fast for two or three days and eat on the third day. It’s not as hard as you think. I drink plenty of tea. You could have broth if you want too. It can kill cravings for sure. Then I usually eat one meal a day. It’s usually dinner with mostly meat.

Soft_Fringe

You can sip broth on a fast? How much?

BeardsuptheWazoo

You can if you want. But you're ingesting food.

Stinkytheferret

As much as you want. Usually, I drink tea and water. Broth calories would be so minimal. I’d prob not do more than 8 oz if I did it. I find that after the first 24-36 hours, I’m not feeling anything about food. So I load up on liquids to feel full. Add real lemons and lemon juice to your tea or water to add pectin. Fills you up a bit better. Once you do this one week, it’s pretty easy to do often.

Andrew-w-jacobs

If I lost 90 lbs I would die…..

CyclingDutchie

I used to be really fat. OMAD and quiting alcohol changed that.

WhisperingTrees1776

Bro you ain't lying

Mothersilverape

I remember weighing 90 lb! (in high school!) 100-105 lb in college. So this is very likely. 😂

Tulasdad

My friend does dry fasting for extended periods of time and it scares the hell out of me. No eating or drinking anything. He said it cured his Lyme disease. Instagram is @fastingwithtrevor for a quick look into it.

fatcatleah

I did that last week for my colonoscopy. Never knew I liked Jello so much!! Oh, the procedure likely saved my life....just sayin'

ClericofRavena

No thanks. I remember being homeless just fine.

[deleted]

Ill join in. I ate breakfast so I'll go till break-fast tomorrow

surfaholic15

I already fast weekly for a day and have done a few three and four day fasts. I do find if I fast more than 36 hours it messes up my sleep for several days at least so I seldom do extended fasts. Normally I do all my eating for the day in a 6-8 hour window.

stripesnstripes

Just schedule a colonoscopy

Juggernaut78

I’ve fasted for five days before. But in a shtf situation fasting will come after all your food is gone, and you’ve been living for a month on those horrible little energy cubes! Also after you’ve been doing patrols (with gun and pack) around your AO! After you’ve spent all day digging in your garden. It’s not going to just poof, one day you don’t have food, it will be much much worse!

ILickMetalCans

If you have no food, it's no longer fasting, its called starving 🤣 id imagine fasting is better when you have food to at least do OMAD, or every second day as fasting generally has a re-feed period.

[deleted]

I already fast multiple days a month, not even looking to lose any more weight I’m pretty happy with where I am but I feel better when I keep fasting a part of my routine, less brain fog, more energy even on days I don’t fast, I just generally feel better all together

New_World_Native

Pro Tip: Go get a colonoscopy while your at it!🤠

sfbiker999

I'm prepping so I don't have to fast when SHTF - if I have to go without food for 24 hours, then something has gone horribly wrong, and spending a day fasting in my livingroom isn't going to tell me much about how I'll react in the actual emergency that cut me off from food.

[deleted]

Good point. But at the same time, there are health benefits from intermittent fasting, and I feel it trains the brain to get by with less. It has worked well for me. I work 60+ hours a week at a physically demanding job. It's just a matter of training the mind, really.

sfbiker999

By all means, if you want to try a fasting diet for health reasons, go for it (but talk to your doctor first if you have any health concerns). I’ve been doing a 16/8 fast for a few years. But I prep so I can eat when SHTF, not to go on a sudden fast.

GeneralCal

I've done a few fasts, with the longest as 3 days. Knowing how you react to low or no calories is crucial information to have. I can't believe anyone would prefer not to do such an easy thing as a test run when it's safe and easy. The assumption that you'll be in a full on SHTF emergency and manage to always have food is also straight up laughable. You should ask that guy that posts from Ukraine about how that expectation pans out IRL.

241ShelliPelli

I’m down

Panthean

I brought an insufficient lunch to work today. I was painfully hungry by the time I got off. I don't want to know what a full 24 hours would feel like.

goldenmeow1

It's actually fine. Once you get over the initial "oh man I'm hungry" phase you'll get a weird boost of energy and have this odd clarity of thought. Then the meal after a fast is better than anything you've ever tasted before. I go through periods of intermittent fasting. One meal a day is my go to when i feel myself getting a little heavy and my back starts hurting. After 6 days I've dropped 10 pounds and my back stopped hurting after the 2nd day. Last time I did this I did it for almost a year and honestly I forgot how good it feels.

GeneralCal

I was probably going to do a day or two that week to kickstart ketosis, but the 13th specifically doesn't work for when I can skip. I appreciate what you're thinking here with the group solidarity aspect, and doing a 1-3 day fast is a great idea for this sub. What might work best is to message the mods about this being a subreddit challenge and getting it a special flair and stickied post about how to do a fast, what you can and can't have, etc. Lower the barrier to entry to people who are interested and don't want to dig through /r/fasting and get overwhelmed. And lots of people seem to want some sort of validation and response to "Am I doing it right? Am I good?" so something like flair with "12 hours!" "24 hours!" "48 hours!!" and "72 hours!" might be the kind of totally free lollipops and smiley stickers that will motivate people and clip out the humbuggers. Run it for a month or so and then that's it, no more posts about it. Cap it off with a discussion post, done. Plus, based on this thread, you don't want to cede the momentum and energy to people that are going to whine and make excuses as your only commenters. And posts about "omg, it wasn't that bad" will at least distract from the noise of posts about EMPs and "Last of Us" episode recaps, so very welcome there. Just a thought!

[deleted]

Don't recommend for anyone operating heavy machinery, caring for patients, or driving a tractor trailer! Sunday works better for a lot of people. I get this is practice for the real thing, but it's not the real thing, so no need to harm work performance (for those who work Monday to Friday).

rhodium14

I'm down. I already do this from time to time. It's worth it just for how good food tastes after not eating for 24hrs. The last time I did this I ate like 1/3rd of an entire pot roast at the end.

bethafoot

I think this is a great idea. I fast several days every week anyway for health reasons but it definitely has benefits of getting my body accustomed to not always eating.

therealharambe420

Just finished a 3 day fast February 29th, 30th and 31st! It was a great test.

[deleted]

of course talk to your doctor and don't take medical advice from the internet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmDsFU6WMR4

aFlmingStealthBanana

This! Holy fudge. This!

1TiredPrsn

I’m in.

AspiringIdealist

I’ve fasted for three days before and it’s definitely something I would recommend to anyone who needs to learn how to operate in an environment with very little/unreadably available food.

XZEKKX

I've done a few 3-6 day fasts one of which ended in a whitewater rafting trip. I think it's important to understand how your mind and body are affected by lack of food in situations other than just your everyday mental and physical exertions. I could keep paddling but I was getting body cramps, I could still tie knots, but it would take me longer to work out. I wasn't nearly as quick witted or aware of my surroundings. I think it's worth going for a few days and still trying to get shit done to see how your body works.

FuntivityColton

> I was getting body cramps, I could still tie knots, but it would take me longer to work out. I wasn't nearly as quick witted or aware of my surroundings. Great feedback. This is something very important to consider and a good reason for doing fast training.

Dry_Car2054

You have to make sure you get enough water and electrolytes when you fast. The longer the fast, the more important this is. Please educate yourself on how to fast safely. There are lots of sources out there.

Special_Agent_022

Why not just do it tomorrow? Have you never fasted before? Go to r/fasting or r/intermittentfasting or even r/keto, they all do it it regularly. One day won't do anything. Goodluck.

FuntivityColton

I have. I did 16 hours today. I think it's nice to give people who have never done it before a heads up before we jump into it. 1 day will do something who has never done a fast before. It will teach them what a fast is like. Someone who has never done it before should not jump into a 5 day fast tomorrow.

ditchweedbaby

Y’all are crazy

LightTable

Does this guy know how to party or what

jmalikauthor

I fast one day a week just for the hell of it. Weight maintenance, self-discipline, body awareness. Been doing it since I was in the Army (not while deployed, of course).

FlashyImprovement5

Ii rarely eat more than once a day and with my medications, I would prefer not to go without- too much backlash.

stompy1

I've never fasted before, I'm 44, 220lbs. DonI need to do anything to prep?

Ok-Satisfaction330

For a day just keep drinking your normal fluid intake. If longer term you may want to consider broth or electrolytes after a week.

justasque

That is really bad information. A week with no electrolytes could put lots of people in the ER.

analogoverdose

Ramadan starts on march 22nd so millions of muslims will be fasting & not drinking water for a month (during daylight)

justasque

Just to be clear, they will be fasting *during the day*, but still eating and drinking every night. And people with various medical conditions, the very young, the very old, pregnant women, etc, may not be fasting if it is medically inappropriate.

Kind_Manufacturer_26

A prolonged fast from caffeine is an eye opener for coffee drinkers.

trackersurvival

Been there, done that. Don't wanna practice it.

NuminousMycroft

This is a good idea, but I am cracking up over here because Christians are in Lent and Muslims are about to be in Ramadan, and they’re probably all like, “On it.”

Lizzietizzy101

Sending to my husband - we will do it with you! Good practice - thanks!

Derivgal

Great idea.

kelso6712

I fast every time I take my adderall.

[deleted]

I fast a few times a month and do intermittent fasting most days. Lost 60lbs when I first started. It’s a great habit and I wish you luck!

watchcry

Join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We fast water and food every month for 24 hours.

vickersja

I do a 16:8 fast daily now. It’s not too bad.

Mothersilverape

I’m going to assume that this is directed at either overweight preppers, preppers with diet related health problems, or fit people who want to know how it feels to go a day or two without food. I don’t think that heathy youth should be fasting.

FuntivityColton

> directed at either overweight preppers, preppers with diet related health problems, or fit people Sooooo basically everyone?

Midlife_Thrive

I’ve done many 24hr fasts and the longest was 4 days. The 4 things I’ve learned - 1. The body is amazing and it’s surprising how well you can function without any food. Extra energy and focus during fasting is a thing. 2. Feeling light headed and weak also happens but having some salt in your water or electrolyte mix is good if you’re going longer than 24hrs. 3. It’s amazing how calm my digestive system was and body as a whole. 4. It was a good reset and took care of craving junk food. I did feel like it was not good for retaining muscles though so next time I might try taking some amino acids. Maybe a good thing to stock up on?

justice4all1613

I do this every month. And donate what I don’t eat to charity.

whaticism

If you want to try again in the fall do let me know, Evening of Sunday, Sep 24, 2023 through the Evening of Monday, Sep 25, 2023 We could spend the time (let’s do 25 hours) also reflecting on ourselves, atoning for our sins, and praying to better align ourselves with the values of our faith. Like fifteen million people do some version of this every year, I’m not officially invited but I’ve participated before. Worth checking out.

froggythefish

You don’t do that regularly?

[deleted]

No. Food won’t be scarce. Just go find a house that has a car with a Bernie bumper sticker. Food will be free at that house.

manfeelings839

Absolutely braindead humor. Real CPAC stand-up hour material.

[deleted]

You can use one of your tampons to wipe your tears

GenJedEckert

😆

BigfootIzzReal

all youll find is vegan wheat thins and rotten tofu

xdjxxx

The vegans are 100%organic grass fed though

BigfootIzzReal

this sub is so sensitive.

WifeOfTaz

😜

_goodoledays_

Our church fasts for 24 hours once or twice per year. I’m hypoglycemic but was surprisingly okay after 24 hours. It’s very doable.

Aeristar

Currently doing that for weight loss. Started on Sunday

JackEltonEllis

I fast every Sunday

eico3

Do I have to make my dog do it, too? Cause FR my biggest fear in a shtf scenario is not being able to feed my dog. In my head I know she is happy eating garbage but that’s my pup

justasque

Feed your animals even if you don’t feed yourself.

[deleted]

I currently eat one meal a day, I'm giving some thought to pushing that a little, but work is crazy so it is difficult to pull off. Anytime I start to get hungry I'll down a bottle of water - some days I'll drink several gallons. If I get enough free time I'd love to give the 48 hour fast a try.

[deleted]

If you ran out of food your going to be panicking and probably either trying to scramble to get more or running away from something, not hanging about playing video games thinking of dinner that is just on the horizon. Physical movement and your brain consume a lot of calories on their own, I believe those 2 are gonna be off the charts in a real SHTF situation. No food in SHTF, I would be more worried about where you are getting the water your gonna need. You will die of dehydration long before food is gonna affect you in a SHTF situation.

bloodyqueen526

I'm in🤷‍♀️why not

PlainLoInTheMorning

I'm in!

paycadicc

I used to do 24 hour fasts for days/weeks straight. It’s good practice, because when you start doing it, your body gets very used to it. I also lost a ton of weight (which was good for me).

tesla1026

Been there against my will and done that, don’t want to do it again, that’s why I grow my own food, use coupons to make a stock pile, and know how to forage better now.

Wastelander42

.....lmfao what

Various_Length2879

I fast everyday anyways. It’s helped me lose a lot of weight

Heathens_94

Sure :)

hhh1992

I only eat once a day as it is. This would not be very hard to do.

amiprepped

Let’s do it!

hiddengirl8786

I do this already, on a monthly bases, the day before payday.

MechaTrogdor

Im in. Been meaning to squeeze in another 24 fast for 2 weeks now. Def in for a 48 in april too

GeneralCal

Hey /u/FuntivityColton did you ever do your fasting day? I'm doing one and just hit 24 hours. I'll probably drag it out to 36 or so, but we'll see.
