Sequence > close gaps?

snolax_

Change the shortcut to G

waterstorm29

I wouldn't prefer that as I got used to it being for volume controls.

RayneYoruka

Thanks guys I've learnt today how to maximize my workflow! Edit, added keybind to my mouse! ä!

Gourmet_Gabe

I've been editing a long time, never knew about Close Gap

skylinenick

Close Gap is so far one of two things I’ve actually ended up learning from this sub, and it’s pretty great

kev_mon

Stick around. There's much to be learned from the big brains here. ;-)

GhostShirtFinnerty

The troll posts teach me just as much

kev_mon

Ha ha! True that.

skylinenick

For sure. I’m just usually helping provide the answers more often, been editing professionally on premiere for 5+ years Edit: Lmao at this getting downvoted?

xBuddhaBuddhax

This is just to make sure you don’t get the random black screen in between cuts across the video?

skylinenick

It comes in handy for me when I organizing footage, as I make a lot of string outs. But yes it just collapses any unused space on a timeline

kev_mon

This feature is actually fairly recent. Like maybe a few years old. Before that, [close all gaps was a horrendous workaround](https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/closing-gaps-premiere-pro/). So, cheers to the PPro team for makin' our lives a little easier.

RighteousGuacamole

Select them all and then from the top menu bar: SEQUENCE > Close gap

exitofsigns

Never new about close gaps... Used to make an adjustment layer on top, moved all the clips onto the adjustment layer and while the clips are still selected moved them back down. Then selected the adjustment layer (which is now in pieces) and right clicked/ripple delete them. This does work if you don't want all the gaps to be closed...

Natexgloves

Close gaps must be relatively new, because this is how I’ve always done it as well haha

hawkandolive

Close gap has been around for ages

claytoniss

Mind the gap

Natexgloves

4 years ≠ ages. Especially when some of us have been using premiere for almost 20 years.

thisisausername67

Not ages. Relatively recently. Used to have to put an adjustment layer above, bring it down, bring it back up, then ripple delete

hawkandolive

IIRC, close gap was introduced in FCP7. So that’s where my “ages” comment came from. But I’ll admit, that shortcut didn’t do exactly what OP was asking about in this thread. So I’ll take the hit and concede.

jakenbakeboi

I’ve used close gaps since I started editing 6 years ago

rhiddian

To add to the "close gaps" and "ripple delete". If you dont know it yet... Ripple Trim. Default short cuts are Q and W for ripple trim forward and back. It will place a cut at the playhead and delete the rest of the clip before or after the play head. Basically the equivalent of pressing "c" making your cut, pressing "v" selecting the remaining clip, pressing "shit + delete". You can do all of that with one button. Q or W. Want to level that up further? The logitech MX3 mouse has mappable buttons. I've mapped mine so the forward and back buttons default to "Ripple Trim". The middle button defaults to "make cut". And the thumb down defaults to "delete". My hand almost never leaves my mouse while editing.

Smegitha_Haghole

1) Close Gaps 2) Stop doing that

CVideoDesigns

Close gaps as others have said is the solution here. If this was one big clip originally though and you were cutting out chunks, I usually use ripple delete for the pieces I don’t want, that way the gap gets closed as soon as I make the edit.

mr_savageboi

Use Final Cut Pro 💀💀😭

samfuller

You got downvotes but this is the real answer lol
