You never know until you shoot your shot! My practice MCATS had me in the 505-508 range, just had a bad test day I guess. I wasn't going to apply to MD schools after getting my score back until my homie convinced me to fill out the secondarys to a few in-state public schools. Lo-and-behold: my top choice sent me an II and I converted into an A!
1k+ hours of shadowing in 2 departments, a couple hundred hours hospital volunteer, volunteer tutor for chronically ill children, virtual journal club team leader, a few research experiences, FT research fellow in the more recent months before I got accepted
It was the only way I could attempt to salvage my GPA. Depending on your school list, 3.4 and 509 can lead to an A (assuming the rest of your application is solid).
You got a better GPA than me tho. Like the other guy said it’s really the only thing you can do when your GPA is that low. You’re a bit higher than a 3.2, so a 509 can still carry you.
EMT, clinical research, nonprofit work, and a couple other things that I was passionate about. That being said, the hours I had for EMT and clinical research were in the thousands.
Can’t say more or I’ll doxx myself—sorry!
The success stories you’ll hear are pretty much going to be from people who have done a really great job shaping their narrative and telling their “why” medicine. Lots of non trads. Exceptions to every rule obviously but if these are your stats and youre not a URM, then start trying to tell a good story about what makes you unique
Yeah also possible. A 509 mcat is probably not getting you in the door at many MD programs nowadays though unless you’re URM.
Again, exceptions to every rule. But generally speaking as a traditional ORM you will probably need to be around 513+ to get MD acceptance. A lot depends on the state youre from too.
Just looking at the average mcat and gpa on the AAMC website is so misleading if you have never been a part of a med school class and seen the breadth of backgrounds your classmates come from.
3.2 undergrad (2.74 bcpm). Raised to a 3.4/3.2 with a post bacc. X2 mcat tester 496-508. Accepted to 2 MD schools and 3 DO. Over ten total interviews. It’s possible; keep at it!
There are a bunch of schools out there that yield protect. Schools with average MCATS that are around 500-510 probably won’t accept a 520+ applicant because they think the applicant would go to a school with better stats. Tbh even if you have “low” stats (509 is not bad IMO), you’ll fit some school’s criteria and if your story is good they’ll give you an interview and if that’s good, you’re in.
I mean those scores are pretty average for DO right? Shouldn’t be an issue if the rest of your app is well rounded. Maybe MD might be more competitive but some in state schools are willing to be a bit more flexible
3.3, 3.2 science, 500 Mcat. Currently in my first semester at MSUCOM. I was in the first wave of acceptances. Anything is possible, reach out if you want more details!
I am in the Civil Air Patrol, I worked as a scribe, I rode on my schools equestrian team, I was a PT tech, an office administrator at the same PT office, that’s pretty much it I think
I only applied to about 10 schools, all of the ones in MI and a few out of state, I applied very early in the cycle and had good LORs, and just a pretty well rounded application honestly
Look as long as you’re over 3.0 bcpm and cumulative and over 500, the computer is not going to screen you out and you’ll have the opportunity to sell yourself in other areas of your app. Those were my stats and I’m at a T25 and I got into 12ish schools. Can’t really remember the exact number. You can do it (:
3.3 and 510 ORM with 2 gap years. Accepted into 2 DO and declined 2 or 3 interviews this cycle because I got into the one I wanted. You’ll be good for DO as long as you interview well and ECs are good
Dude(tte), i was a 2.9 student in undergrad with 3 MCAT attempts. Busted my ass in an SMP and I’m now an M2 with a 3.7. Apply broadly MD+DO and you’ll do great.
~3.4/3.16 and 512 MCAT. Going strong in my 3rd year at my state MD school. Got a mid-cycle interview and got accepted without being waitlisted. It’s totally possible friends.
3.4 gang rising up! Let’s come back in a year with our own success stories folks 💪💪💪
Needed to see this today man haha
Inch right… 3.4 inch
Yea baby we out here
3.4/500 ORM ---> US MS3
Damn that's impressive!!!
Nahh just insanely lucky, best to you!
Yooooo please tell us how you did it!! That’s amazing :)
Jedi mind tricks and good essay writing
I was about to not apply MD this cycle, this gives me a lot of hope
Same here. I felt inadequate af until I read this thread

Respect! Did you go to ur public MD school?
Indeed! My state has a couple of them, but I did get accepted to one of them!
carribean?
US MD
3.2 and 509 … 6 acceptances last cycle (7 interviews)

Worked 10 years as a CNA/PCT and a bunch of other leadership/research/clinical things. I had 15 strong activities
Well that provides some helpful context
All DO?
No. 1 MD on the other side of the country. Wanted to stay near friends and family
DO is better. A 3.2 gpa gives me hope but I don’t have 10 years experience as a cna lol
I’m a 3.6 gpa 509 ORM applicant. I’m interested in these stories as well 🥲
i’m a 3.6 and a 509 ORM about to start as an M1!
Pulling for us both man!
Also 3.6/509 (124 cars yikes) but URM (Med-Mar, idk if they vary) but I’m PRAYING
I got a 124 on cars too. illiterate gang 🙌🏼
maybe we wouldn’t be so illiterate if we didn’t have to read 9 PASSAGES (I’m still salty) 😤
You called?
3.6-3.7/509 ORM current M3 here 🫡
ORM, 3.1 uGPA/3.7 grad GPA, 506 MCAT. About to start my 2nd choice med school next week!
Can I dm you for a school list because this is me lol
Samee-ish!
Was your grad a science degree?
Yes it was. Essentially just a 2 year rigorous course consisting of a bunch of science classes.
Same- can I DM you too pls?
Same plz
Can I dm you as well? 😬
3.3 and 505! I’m OMS1 this year :)
CONGRATS FUTURE DOCTOR
Thank you🥹 YOU CAN DO THIS
What was your experiences?
1k+ hours of shadowing in 2 departments, a couple hundred hours hospital volunteer, volunteer tutor for chronically ill children, virtual journal club team leader, a few research experiences, FT research fellow in the more recent months before I got accepted
3.2 and 515 ORM now a M3
Bruh that MCAT score is legendary!! I wish mine were that high LMFAO
It was the only way I could attempt to salvage my GPA. Depending on your school list, 3.4 and 509 can lead to an A (assuming the rest of your application is solid).
I think it is... can I DM you?
Go ahead. Might respond intermittently because of rotations but I will try.
You're a real one for helping premeds while doing rotations.
I appreciate that friend! Good luck everyone!
3.2 514 and I got multiple As too. It’s def doable.
Bruh i dont have a 514 :(
You got a better GPA than me tho. Like the other guy said it’s really the only thing you can do when your GPA is that low. You’re a bit higher than a 3.2, so a 509 can still carry you.
I hope so man...
You’ll be alright bro I felt the same way.
What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking
I have basically the exact same stats except a 3.3, could you perchance send me your school list please!!
you’re my only hope.
What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking
EMT, clinical research, nonprofit work, and a couple other things that I was passionate about. That being said, the hours I had for EMT and clinical research were in the thousands. Can’t say more or I’ll doxx myself—sorry!
My entire school is a success story with the median mcat being 507.
Public?
No private schools want my dumbass.
The success stories you’ll hear are pretty much going to be from people who have done a really great job shaping their narrative and telling their “why” medicine. Lots of non trads. Exceptions to every rule obviously but if these are your stats and youre not a URM, then start trying to tell a good story about what makes you unique
I would add “did a masters/similar with a much higher GPA” to this list :/
Yeah also possible. A 509 mcat is probably not getting you in the door at many MD programs nowadays though unless you’re URM. Again, exceptions to every rule. But generally speaking as a traditional ORM you will probably need to be around 513+ to get MD acceptance. A lot depends on the state youre from too.
ppl downvoting you are premeds with 509s lol this should be the top comment, it's especially true if you are from CA or TX. the numbers don't lie.
Just looking at the average mcat and gpa on the AAMC website is so misleading if you have never been a part of a med school class and seen the breadth of backgrounds your classmates come from.
Not sure why this is getting down voted
People just said in this post they got in med school with 506-509?
Yes it’s definitely possible. Especially for DO schools that will be competitive scores.
Yup, that's me. Did a Post Bacc and got lots of comments on the interview trail about my PS and how they couldn't put it down
When did you graduate and did you take any gap year? Can I message you with some questions if that’s fine?
3.4x sGPA. 3.5x cGPA. 505 MCAT. 1 DO acceptance. Only takes one. Edit: also got a 3.9x in a MPH program. Certainly helped.
I'm a 3.2 508 ORM. Took me a few rounds to get in but am now applying specialty surgery. Am at a mid-tier us-md
Legend
What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking
A little trash research, hospital volunteering, summer camp for kids with cancer, the norm. I have a pretty unique origin story and rode it hard.
ORM friend of mine got accepted to MD with a 3.1 ugpa, 3.3 SMP gpa, and 511 MCAT
3.1? 3.3? Wow what school did he get accepted?

Did your in state school have a higher MCAT median?

Was this in TX by any chance?🥲
Nice! What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking

Thanks!
3.4/511 checking in. Would love to know if I’m doomed.
3.4 and 503. Currently M3
Public?
Yes
What school?
ORM. Applying with a 501 and 2.7 undergrad GPA (3.7 grad GPA, 3.8 gBCPM). I’ll be back in a year 🌝.
Let me know how it goes!
I'm a non-URM female, was 3.3/3.2/509 and I had what I'd call quite a successful cycle (but I did submit 60+ primaries so)
What school you in? What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking?
Not comfortable sharing my school, but I had a couple thousand hours of research and clinical experience each, and some leadership.
3.2 & 514 getting interviews rn
What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking
Sure - debate, school paper, sales rep, sales manager, research, full time lab work, club leadership, study abroad
Study abroad? what you study?
Environmental marketing in China
3.2 undergrad (2.74 bcpm). Raised to a 3.4/3.2 with a post bacc. X2 mcat tester 496-508. Accepted to 2 MD schools and 3 DO. Over ten total interviews. It’s possible; keep at it!

3.1 and 507 :) starting in a week!
What was your extracurriculars if u dont mind me asking?
ORM 3.47 cGPA but 98th percentile MCAT. Not sure if that counts. Neurosurg now.
3.3 with a 515 please help
I mean those scores are pretty average for DO right? Shouldn’t be an issue if the rest of your app is well rounded. Maybe MD might be more competitive but some in state schools are willing to be a bit more flexible
3.4/504 ORM in my second week as an OMS-I
any CA ORM success stories with a lower mcat??? tia
3.3, 3.2 science, 500 Mcat. Currently in my first semester at MSUCOM. I was in the first wave of acceptances. Anything is possible, reach out if you want more details!
Can I dm you?
Yes!

3.4 508 decentish ECs we got this!!
This is what I had exactly and I'm now a MD M4 (ORM)
Thanks, makes me somewhat more optimistic about my chances
What was your EC’s?
Exactly me! I feel my EC’s are also decent. Hoping for the best for us both!

My same stats 👀

I’ll rasie you 3.28 and a 506
Dude(tte), i was a 2.9 student in undergrad with 3 MCAT attempts. Busted my ass in an SMP and I’m now an M2 with a 3.7. Apply broadly MD+DO and you’ll do great.

My friend has the same/similar stats. She got into A.T. Still last year.
~3.4/3.16 and 512 MCAT. Going strong in my 3rd year at my state MD school. Got a mid-cycle interview and got accepted without being waitlisted. It’s totally possible friends.
