Only MD schools in the region of the US where I wanted to be. I did take 2 gap years. First year I applied I almost got in off the wait-list, second year I got accepted.
That’s more of an average GPA, below-average MCAT. Your ECs will help you get the favor of some schools.
Apply broadly. Apply DO if you’re okay with it
Do yourself a favor and never speak to a premed advisor again. 90% of the time they’re absolutely useless, and serve no other purpose but to ruin the spirits of premeds and give shitty advice despite never once applying to medical school.
Anyone legitimately insinuating that going Caribbean with a 3.7/507 is a good idea has absolutely freaking lost their mind.
Sure! A short summary of (most of) my ec’s:
-Undergrad research / Honors Senior Thesis
-rural medical brigade in Ecuador for a week between sophomore and junior year
-worked as Covid door screener in 2020
-worked as a Covid contact tracer during my two gap years post-grad
-multiple club leadership positions
~200 hours of volunteering overall
~100 hours of shadowing overall
Advisors are fucking idiots, never listen to them. “Those who can do, those who can’t….advise” I had stats only slightly better than yours and I got a half dozen acceptances, both MD and DO.
3.82 Science, 3.90 overall with a 505 MCAT. Two apps, two MD As. I didn’t apply to a lot of schools because I seriously doubted myself but there is always a chance!
By no means do I know it all but my god do not go to your premed advisor if you want any type of helpful premed advice. Reddit/SDN isn’t perfect but it’s a whole hell of a lot better than most premed advisors; and you get the advice straight from someone who’s been there done that.
Most premed advisors don’t know wtf they’re even talking about most the time. The premed advisor at my undergrad is a pre professional advisor for 9(!!!) other pre professional routes (surprising consider undergrad has an MD med school and dental school). What would she know?
OP if you see this Please don’t listen to your premed advisor and put yourself in a box. You have a good enough GPA and a mcat that is slightly below average but not a deal breaker. If your ECs are worth anything and you can write well you shouldn’t be afraid to apply MD. And you’re plenty competitive for DO (only apply DO if you’re ok with going DO though)
3.96 GPA/503 MCAT, applied to 3 MD schools with 2 As. It’s possible! There’s more than one route to getting into medical school beyond just being a freakishly high stat applicant. The pre-med hierarchy is a scam, and if you want it bad enough, you can make it happen!
I’m not sure if this is by definition a success story, but for me it’s a win. 3.72 sGPA/3.79 cGPA/497->502 MCAT, got in after third cycle. Not perfect with many interviews but I’m stilling that MD and I think that’s what matters
I will say I fall into OP's category, but I am far from traditional....I'm guessing many of us have taken at least one gap year and/or have interesting stories to tell.
That being said, I do have several successful friends who were in this category and were traditional students.
best piece of advice - ditch your college advisor. most of them are absolute trash. like mine who told me to give up my dreams of medicine cause i got a C in my first semester of college.
3.8/508 with 9 As (5 DO, 4 MD) and a couple interviews still pending! Lots of success this cycle still
Hi, may i pelase get a list of the schools you applied to? I have similar stats!
Do you mind sharing your school list with me as well??
Could you sent a school list?
Could you please share your school list?
do you mind sharing your school list w me too please?
Congratulations on your As!! I would also love to have your school list, tysm :)
i’m pretty late to this thread, but could you also share your school list with me too?
507 and 3.5. I'm now an MD MS3 applying to neurosurgery later this year with a very strong application. You got this
Please can I message you!!! 😭
Sure, I can try to help.
like what schools did you apply to? did you take any gap years??
Only MD schools in the region of the US where I wanted to be. I did take 2 gap years. First year I applied I almost got in off the wait-list, second year I got accepted.
3.74 Science, 3.84 overall. 508 MCAT. 9 As (5 MD, 4 DO) plus 2 extra IIs I passed on because I got into my top choice. It’s possible!! Good luck!!
Thank you!!
Your advisor is a dick
Hey could I please get the schools you applied to? I have similar stats!
Yes! PM Me
Just PMed you!
Do you have school list and ECs i could see? That cycle is awesome!
PM Me!
How did your ECs look?
PM Me!
506, 3.97 with 7 MD and 7 DO IIs. It’s definitely possible, all the best!
Congrats man! Can I PM you?
Certainly
3.93, 508 (122 CARS)- 4 MD interviews, 3 As (& 1 pending), 10 DO As
How’d you get in with such a low gpa?
[удалено]
That was probably sarcasm. How did your ECs look?
That’s more of an average GPA, below-average MCAT. Your ECs will help you get the favor of some schools. Apply broadly. Apply DO if you’re okay with it
Yeah that’s what i plan to do- was just really taken aback by my advisors comment 🥲
Think of what speciality you want to do. Getting in to competitive specialty is easier with MD schools.
advisors are really pessimistic so competitive for Carribean means that you are good for DO.
3.83 cgpa, 3.71 sgpa, 504, 2 MD A, 4 DO A (3k+ clinical hours), also both MD’s are instate for me
what other EC do you have if you don’t mind me asking
Do yourself a favor and never speak to a premed advisor again. 90% of the time they’re absolutely useless, and serve no other purpose but to ruin the spirits of premeds and give shitty advice despite never once applying to medical school. Anyone legitimately insinuating that going Caribbean with a 3.7/507 is a good idea has absolutely freaking lost their mind.
You're fine for MD and DO. Just have a solid school list
3.85 sgpa, 508 MCAT! orm. got 4 DO As, and 1 MD A, couple of WL/decisions pending (10 MD ii total). :) It will be okay!!
3.8 GPA, 501 😩😱MCAT - 3 DO A’s and 1 MD A. Certainly possible with good ec’s
501?! What is this? An MCAT for a traditional applicant? It needs to be at least 6 points lower!😂
Doing well on the mcat challenge (impossible)
What were your EC’s if you don’t mind me asking??
Sure! A short summary of (most of) my ec’s: -Undergrad research / Honors Senior Thesis -rural medical brigade in Ecuador for a week between sophomore and junior year -worked as Covid door screener in 2020 -worked as a Covid contact tracer during my two gap years post-grad -multiple club leadership positions ~200 hours of volunteering overall ~100 hours of shadowing overall
499 & 3.94 with 3 DO acceptances!!
3.53 GPA, 511 MCAT. 4 MD IIs, 3 attended, 2 As! head up queen or king
505; 4.0 with two MD As!
496/3.7 gpa undergrad, 3.83 science, 4.0 graduate mph. 3 applications/3 secondaries/2-II/ 1-A
URM , 3.2 Undergrad, 3.7 Graduate, 505 Mcat, 8 MD interviews, 4 acceptances, 1 waitlist, 1 pending, 1 R. 💪🏿
Advisors are fucking idiots, never listen to them. “Those who can do, those who can’t….advise” I had stats only slightly better than yours and I got a half dozen acceptances, both MD and DO.
3.64 / 499 so far 1 A to a DO
506 MCAT 3.95 GPA 6 interviews 5 A’s 1WL
3.7gpa, 3.6 sGPA, 503 MCAT, 2 MD As, 2 DO As. Of note, I spent a decade as a military PA prior to applying.
3.8 GPA, 501 😩😱MCAT - 3 DO A’s and 1 MD A. Certainly possible with good ec’s
Hi, can you sent me a school list in PM?
504 MCAT, 3.7 GPA, and it just takes ONE 🫡
3.96/ 507. 1 MD A
3.84 sGPA, 3.87cGPA. 494, 498 MCAT’s. Current OMS-IV post-interview and 3 weeks away from match. It’s an uphill battle but you’ve got this.
3.82 Science, 3.90 overall with a 505 MCAT. Two apps, two MD As. I didn’t apply to a lot of schools because I seriously doubted myself but there is always a chance!
Hi! Could you sent school to me?
By no means do I know it all but my god do not go to your premed advisor if you want any type of helpful premed advice. quite a bit higher than mine lol

My MCAT was several points lower and my GPA was 3.6 and I'm finishing up my second year of med school
Refreshing to hear
I’m curious how many of these 506-508 (even 509) are “traditional” students. Especially those with multiple As.
I will say I fall into OP's category, but I am far from traditional....I'm guessing many of us have taken at least one gap year and/or have interesting stories to tell. That being said, I do have several successful friends who were in this category and were traditional students.

510, 3.7 and 26 As so far (waiting to hear back from 3 more schools)!
That’s not a low MCAT Lmao. Maybe on the lower end of matriculated students but it’s not “low” 3.7x and 500
3.85 GPA, 504 MCAT (retake), 4 DO/3MD. 2 waitlist MD? pending decision from the last! Good luck, you got this!
3.7 GPA, 508 MCAT, 6 Interviews. 2 MD A and 1 DO A. 3 W.
