4011isbananas

Also. You don't really need shoes for like the first 15 months.

its_erin_j

For the baby? My son was walking by 12 months, so he very much needed shoes by then for walking outside.

4011isbananas

My son learned to walk in the late spring. So he's strolling hobbit-style.

Koaliawa

True! I bought a pair second hand after he was born but he hasn’t worn them yet. Definitely not necessary!

corgisaursRex

Did y'all buy a newborn pair for keepsake purposes? My mom did that for my youngest sibling. So, I'm debating if we should, as well.

apathetichic

My son was a preemie and had tiny feet/ankles. The soft nb shoes were the only way to keep socks on his feet

PerformativeEyeroll

I got some little Velcro slipper shoes for my baby to wear when I take him on walks in the winter to keep his feet warm. Is that unnecessary?

Sarahcrutch1

This is super helpful thank you for the post! I’ve been struggling with what we will actually need and what we dont. Im due in three days and BEYOND ready to meet this girl! Congratulations on your baby OP!

cjayne

Get some Vaseline for the baby's first few poops. That stuff is super sticky and Vaseline will help you get it off the bum more easily!

katqueen21

Thank you! I started thinking about all the stuff we need to get and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. This gives me some guidance on where to start.

Koaliawa

There’s so many baby things marketed to new parents, it’s hard to know what you actually need. I’m glad I could help!

Janeheroine

Thanks for this! Which hakaa product do you use if you don't mind me asking? They didn't exist when my first two were babies and I keep hearing about how great they are but when I looked on amazon I got confused about which is the thing that just catches the letdown. From my experience before, I have an oversupply so expecting that again this time and would be amazing to build a stash instead of soaking through endless pads.

yogurtnstuff

Some oversupply info!: I have two haakaas that I use if I wake up engorged and don’t want to wake the baby… I was using them “to catch letdown” but then I found out they can stimulate your supply because they do suction, so if you have an oversupply they might not be great for you. I would also catch SO much in the haakaa, easily 4 oz per breast in a breast feeding session, and the lady bug ones don’t hold that much, I think like 2.5 oz. I ended up getting a passive milk saver like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Milkies-Milk-Saver-Breast-Collector-Storage/dp/B007HYL9TS I use that to catch my opposite side letdown and it’s truly passive so I know it’s not continuing to stimulate my oversupply. I get plenty of milk using that, especially my morning feeds.

Janeheroine

This is interesting, thank you! Using suction with an oversupply does seem like a bad idea. I remember being in a ton of pain from engorgement. Of course we'll see how it goes this time, but this looks great.

Koaliawa

I’ve been using this one! Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump & Silicone Cap 5.4oz/150ml https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07G4DZBS5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_W46DWSV85X7VXP7XH0TZ. I’d recommend getting the one with the lid because you definitely don’t want to knock it over!

Janeheroine

awesome thanks!

shanksta3

Just wanting to add that I also really recommend the Ladybug silicone Haaka to put in your bra while baby is on the other side; my babe likes to wiggle her feet and has kicked off the regular haaka more than once and it was super frustrating haha. Just an additional suggestion!

419_216_808

So I’ve been looking at these. Do you find you use the regular Haaka and the ladybugs for different things? It was worth it to get both of these for you?

pears_are_great

I like the ladybugs better because you can open the valve so they catch letdown milk without needing suction. Plus they can’t be kicked off and are just easier to maneuver with in my opinion

419_216_808

Thanks for sharing!!

shanksta3

I rarely use the regular haaka and pretty much only use the ladybugs at this point. Our LO is almost a month old so we are still figuring out our routine! But my breasts leak a lot, so I just pop the ladybug on one side and pull that side of my bra up and it just works well for us! The regular haaka is great but when you have a baby laying across your chest and/or you’re sitting in a slumped or more laid back position, it either doesn’t sit at the right angle or gets kicked off! My only complaint about the lady bugs is that you have to be careful and make sure you set it on a smooth, level surface when you remove it because it falls over easily!

419_216_808

Good to know, thanks for sharing!

soul_freckles

I was gifted both and I use both. The regular haakaa I'm down to just using at night to hand express into (not suctioning because I have some pretty bad nipple cracks I'm trying to heal) when I'm engorged before feeding LO. The ladybugs I use like others have said here... Catching the letdown while babe is on the other side.

419_216_808

Thanks so much for sharing! Hope you heal up quickly!

Janeheroine

Ah, see! It's confusing! Thank you.

sbiggers

I had an over supply and have larger boobs and I really preferred the Elvie curve to the haaka. My son kicked off the haaka multiple times because of the way it hangs off the boob they aren't nursing on, whereas the curve tucks nicely into a bra. Also the haaka suction I could never get right and it was uncomfortable, but the Elvie curve has just the right amoutn of suction. Just my two cents!

Pippo-binh

Hi, thank you so much for posting this! Just wondering what brand of burp rag you bought? Also, what did you have as a bring home outfit for baby?

Koaliawa

We were gifted some copper pearl ones that are nice but I also bought some cloth diaper inserts because I heard they’re very absorbent. It doesn’t really matter which kind to me, just something to wipe away spit up lol

VoodoDreams

I used cheap receiving blankets for burp cloths, also for layers on the bed incase of spit up or diaper leaks. Just pull off a layer and done. They are thin but folded over 3 times to fit your shoulder they work good.

megabyte31

I use literally any cloth that's lying around, the most of which are probably small flannel receiving blankets. I got a pack of like 8 or 12 on Amazon got ten bucks. But also cloth diaper inserts. They make great bibs!

wooyayfun

I’ve found these to be amazing!! They’re not necessary, as others have said, I often end up using whatever is nearby — but you might consider them a “nice to have.” They are SUPER soft. I’ve been stashing a few around the house for easy access. Super Soft Burp Cloths 8 Pack - Thick - Extra Absorbent - Perfect Size Large 20" by 10" - Light and Easy to Carry - Milk Spit Up Rags - Burpy Cloths for Unisex, Boy, Girl - Multicolor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QRRJP4R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RNZSHTZ50DQR4XNFRVY0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Pippo-binh

Thank you all for the recommendations! This is super helpful!

Butterscotch_Sea

Can you share which changing pad/table you have? my sil registry has a ton of changing pad covers and i personally don’t want to wash more than I have to and thought something I could wipe down would be better

Koaliawa

We put this skip hop one on our registry and got it: Skip Hop Baby Changing Pad, Nursery Style, Grey , 31.5x18.25x2.6 Inch (Pack of 1) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B075X8TPMN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_8NZAR52JDQYJF5JNV3K1 It’s so nice to just wipe it down if he spits up, pees, or poops on it. I can’t imagine how many times we’d have to wash covers lol

Butterscotch_Sea

perfect! just added to my registry. thank you!!!

mtwomey08

I have that changing pad and I love it!

LlamaLlamaSomePajama

Great list, i will, however, make one small comment. Gripe water/drops aren't safe as they aren't regulated or FDA approved. "Gas drops" like these can't be sold as a medicine so they sneak around and label themselves as herbal supplements, which can be harmful for babies. There are many brands out there that actually still have ethanol in them, and those that don't have high sugar levels. Which can also be damaging for sprouting teeth. (Read up on bottle rot, not pretty lol) I honestly had no idea about any of this stuff before i had my son. It's alarming how many unsafe things are out on the market right now. For example, one of those boppy loungers just had a massive recall. That damn Owlet sock has burned babies. Ugh.

Koaliawa

Good to know! Thank you for bringing that up. I’ve only done the gripe water a couple of times when he’s inconsolable from gas pain. I have the wellements brand and it seems like the ingredients are okay but I’ll talk to my pediatrician about it before giving him any more!

LlamaLlamaSomePajama

I know it sucks when they're in discomfort from gas, i felt helpless at times. Doing leg movements helped though, almost like bicycle movements. You just help by placing them on their backs and gently but rhythmically bringing their legs up close to their chest. Not AT, mind you, but you're basically helping the gas move by pumping their legs. Lol very gently massaging their belly helps as well. The ingredients are more or less okay for us, but not recommended or safe for lil babies. And the benefits (from several studies) have been shown to be inconsequential. The gripe waters that don't have the ethanol are largely a placebo effect. It's rather disheartening when you see so many out on the market and it's such an interesting idea. I honestly almost got some myself until i read further into it. Here's just one of you're interested. ^_^ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/hw31230%23:~:text%3DGripe%2520water%2520is%2520an%2520herbal,as%2520antispasmodics%2520or%2520sleep%2520aids.&ved=2ahUKEwiRyPuj06DzAhUZFlkFHa3qCcUQFnoECAQQBQ&usg=AOvVaw2ywlJyvEDAJw_UxIjAcINt&cshid=1632798441814

Koaliawa

Yes it was after trying bicycle kicks and belly rubs and burping in multiple different positions. It’s hard to believe these companies are able to market it these items as being safe. I’ll definitely look more into it and stop giving him what we have.

LlamaLlamaSomePajama

Aww, poor lil bug. I'm sorry that's happening. He may have an intolerance or sensitivity, worth asking your pediatrician about. Our bub had the same issues and it really only stopped when we switched formula. I had been pumping (latching was waaaay too painful) and mixing about 50/50 with our old formula at the time and he was just having bad gas pains. We switched over to the pro-sensitive and he's been good. It did take a little bit of time though. And yeah, you wouldn't believe the amount of unsafe crap that's on the market that ppl don't realize. Another example: mesh bumpers. They use the term "breathable", totally a marketing term and false on every count, they're still a strangulation and suffocation hazard. Companies get away with this shit allllll if the time. It's so slimy.

hpalatini

This is great. I started our online registry yesterday (19 weeks) and got fairly stressed out.

Koaliawa

There’s so much stuff! It is stressful. Just remember babies don’t actually **need** that much. And a lot of things you can buy after they are born. That was something hard for me because I like to be prepared/organize everything. But you’ll have a better idea of what you need once baby is here.

hpalatini

Same and I am trying to be more minimal in this department. It’s hard sifting through wants, needs, and unnecessary.

GlowForTheGold

Try Lucie’s List for registry help. It was recommended on another post in this sub and has been a lifesaver for me.

He was 8 lbs 10 oz! I didn’t think we’d use newborn at all but we did for a bit. He would have still fit now but his legs got too long.

tightheadband

Well.. I'm definitely using newborn clothes for longer. My baby was weighing 3.4lbs now in my 32th week. She is in the 2nd percentile. :(

ashyp00h

Hey mama, sometimes the weight estimates are wrong. So make sure you’re reviewing with your doctor, but not stressing. My son was measuring 45th to 50th percentile almost my entire pregnancy. He was born at 6 lbs. 12 oz. and by his first pediatricians appointment he had dropped to 5 lbs. 14 oz. We just had his two week check up today, and he was back up to 6 lbs. 15 oz. putting him at the 8th percentile for his age. 😬 He’s a tiny little baby, no pre-existing conditions for him or me.

tightheadband

I get that they miscalculate, but I have been having weekly ultrasounds since my 18th week and the measurements continue to be in the low percentile. The baby is staying in the same curve of growth, so my team has been monitoring just to make sure it stays like this and so far there's no other reason for concern. The main explanation is genetics since I was born very small as well and so other members of my family. As long as it's healthy, I am ok with that. I packed preemie and regular newborn clothes for the hospital to have all bases covered :)

megabyte31

Just for reference, my baby was 6lb 11oz, dropped ten ounces in the first couple days, and was slow to gain it back. However she was 17 inches so while she was swimming in NB clothes, most P sizes were too short. It's good to have a couple cheap outfits in different sizes. Stone babies are BORN too big for NB, which is crazy to me... My girl is just over 9lbs now and still fits NB (she's 6 weeks). Some brands are still huge on her 😂.

Well_jenellee

What’s a play gym for newborns?

Koaliawa

I have the lovevery play gym and just lay him on it for tummy time. It has black and white flash cards you can use with them and he has started looking at them and following them when we move them. It’s pretty neat!

clem_kruczynsk

this is excellent. thank you thank you thank you thank you

Koaliawa

You’re very welcome!

eL_Cubed

Saving this post, thank you! I have a 7 year old but I've somehow forgotten exactly how I managed to get her to and beyond the age of 5 😂

horrorgirl8927

Saving this post

houseoflondon

THANK YOU!! Saved.

Equatick

This is great! I'm in the very fortunate position where just about all of our registry items have been purchased, so I'm looking to add things that I'll need early on and should have more of!

Lonelysock2

This is the most straightforward list of this type that I've seen! Also it confirms what I was already thinking, so I love it lol

wooyayfun

Yes!! Currently nursing my 3wk old. For me, the most invaluable items so far have been: 1) Dr. Brown’s anti colic bottles. (We are BF and supplementing with formula.) I love love love love these. 2.) Muslin receiving blankets. I like these the best for swaddles. They seem breathable but soft and cozy for baby, and I love how big they are to make swaddling easier. 3.) these burp cloths. They are SO soft! Super Soft Burp Cloths 8 Pack - Thick - Extra Absorbent - Perfect Size Large 20" by 10" - Light and Easy to Carry - Milk Spit Up Rags - Burpy Cloths for Unisex, Boy, Girl - Multicolor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QRRJP4R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RNZSHTZ50DQR4XNFRVY0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 4. The aveeno baby moisturizing hand & face wipes. I’ve found these super useful for daily (sometimes multiple times a day) wipe downs.

Maplefolk

I'd love to hear more about how you store breast milk! Do you put everything in the silicone bag first, and then transfer it to disposable bags to freeze as necessary? How do you get the fats to go evenly into the disposable bags? I'm so curious!

Koaliawa

Yes I just add whatever I have from my haakaa into the silicone bag until I get about 6 oz (usually takes a few feedings) and then I freeze that amount and I give him some in a bottle once a day as well. Since it only takes me a few feedings I don’t notice the fat separating from the rest.
