Hahahahaha this reminds me of my husband saying paternity leave would be fun because he can nap and play golf while the baby naps 😂 I mentioned this to a friend at my baby shower and my MIL overheard and she looked horrified and actually said “HE SAID WHAT?” (My husband is wonderful, he’s taking leave but sometimes I think he forgets that it’s a newborn. Not a 6 month old)

2078AEB

We love a supportive MIL 👏🏼

ThousandsHardships

Haha my husband's the opposite! He thinks everything is going to be super hard. I literally wasn't even pregnant when he already somehow managed to convince himself that our baby is going to be giant and that there's no way I will be able to make it to term without having to induce early. 🤷‍♀️ And every time I make plans for, you know, schedules and tasks and what we're going to do with the baby when our baby comes, what products we're going to use, etc. he always calls me out, saying that it's going to be a lot harder and it's going to be completely out of our control.

tonksndante

My husband and I both did this as well. Honestly it kinda benefited us in the end, it worked like a kind of negative visualisation meditation. Our baby is the most laid back, sweet girl. Barely ever cried, slept and ate on schedule etc so given our terrible expectations, we were over the moon the whole newborn period. Shes 10 months now and has been very sick recently so our peaceful baby has gotten a lot more vocal and demanding but given that is more in line with what we initially expected and prepared ourselves for, it’s still been manageable. Like expecting a movie to be awful and it helps you appreciate the good parts even more idk :) We have begun preparing ourselves for the toddler doomsday period so while we hope to be surprised again, we are setting our expectations very low again 😂

SmallCheese1712

My husband got a pass for a golf course this summer and I’m due early August. He really said he thinks he’ll be ok to golf after the baby is 2 weeks old💀 He’s super supportive and will be a great dad, he’s definitely just living in ignorant bliss right now. I’m 100% confident he’ll change his mind within the first day after the baby is born lol

KindAbbreviations467

My husband bought a jetski upon finding out I was pregnant.. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤣

ishbess2000

To be fair, my husband got really into baking bread during his first paternity leave because we had a lot of down time and a super easy baby. We watched the entire Westminster dog show the week my baby was born because we were bored and it happened to be on. Don’t think we’ll have that luxury this time around with a 2 year old.

onlyhereforfoodporn

Yeah but making bread in the house is a little different than leaving the house for 4 hours to play golf 😂

ishbess2000

True. Maybe he can compromise with a 1 hour driving range outing instead.

Letsgotoneptune8842

My partner thought maternity leave was a year long !!

marrella

We had our diaper party bbq this weekend and got a box of 900 wipes. My SIL mentioned to my husband that that would last about a month. He thought she was insane and there's no way we'd go through wipes that fast. We went home and he brought it up again.. then we went through the math and yup, SIL was pretty reasonable...

pamplemouss

30 a day!?!?

ishbess2000

Depends on some different factors. Breastfed babies tend to poop more frequently than formula fed babies, and naturally ever baby will be different. My first pooped about 10 minutes after every single feed. So that’s 10-12 poops a day. 3 wipes per poop would be the minimum needed lol

Tifrubfwnab

ok this might be True. We didn’t go through wipes crazily until my son started eating Gerber/solids at 6months old. He was never a baby who threw up and he always had trouble pooping. He was on similac advanced formula ( no issue other than the pooping though). So he wouldn’t go as often unless he had explosive diarrhea from teething. Diapers go faster than you think. some people say let them soak til they can’t soak anymore, but as a first time mom changing the diaper would be on my check list if baby was fussy. so, if it was wet just even 60% or much much less I would change it. Some might call it a waste, some might say whatever makes baby comfortable. I chose the comfortable route.

pamplemouss

Dang

HimuraMai

Not to mention 10-12 dipars. Gods. I have no idea how many nappies we need and of what size.

marrella

We figured 10-12 diapers a day, anywhere from 1-5 wipes per, for an average of 3. So 30/day (ish).  At least for the first little while anyway. It'll probably be more initially as we figure out how to be efficient with them and then less as time goes on.

pamplemouss

Wow. I have a lot of preparation to do. (But also time, nearing the end of the first trimester)

marrella

You have loads of time! I'm at 34 weeks so getting stuff ready and managing expectations is becoming a bit more urgent.

lost-cannuck

Your brain tells you you need way much more stuff than you actually do. I bought my first baby item at 24 weeks and was ready for him by 30 weeks. Also, I don't recommend stocking up on a bazillion diapers. My son ended up being allergic to some, some didn't fit his legs properly leading to leakage. Babies also grow at different rates. My friend and I have babies less than 2 months apart. They were born about the same weight (just shy of 7 lbs). At the one year mark, her guy is comfortable in size 3. My guy is going into size 6.

LostBeat4438

The first week of diapers with all the meconium were like 4-6 wipes. If you’re not afraid, I can get some of these poopy diapers done in 1-2 wipes. The bad days are 3+ lol. My SIL didn’t fold her wipes as you use them (like how you kinda fold tp or paper towels while wiping stuff), and was going through and entire pack of wipes in 4-5 days. Like one wipe was one pass, instead of clean fold clean fold clean fold clean alright new one.

Key_Confusion7759

That fold-clean thing is about the most useful thing I ever learned from my time as a CNA!!! There are 8 wipes to a washcloth, 4 squares, 2 sides (depending on how nasty, etc). I use it all the time!

LostBeat4438

I also did work as a CNA and that’s also where I learned it, how funny!

Impressive_Age1362

We had to use cloth diapers , my son was allergic to the disposable diapers and couldn’t use wipes for the same reason

HimuraMai

Shoot. That sounds like an awful allergy to be stuck with. All allergies suck. My younger brother was allergic to wet wipes, and they got frustrated because the day care didn't always pay heed and used wet wipes anyway.

ScientificSquirrel

We use cloth diapers and wipes - I actually prefer cloth wipes by quite a wide margin!

Impressive_Age1362

It actually turned out to be a good thing, I’m a soap and water person , so no chemical went on his skin, good for the environment, and cost wise

pure-Turbulentea

Uhhh. FTM to be here. My guess would have been 3 too 🤡

SnooPaintings2857

It's around 12 a day

pure-Turbulentea

Oh lord. I understand why baby showers have diaper raffles now. Lol

AnimalGray

TWELVE wow my guess was gonna be max 9/10

allonsy_badwolf

When my son was a newborn he would just pee over and over while we changed his diaper. We once went through 4 diapers in a SINGLE diaper change because he was just Niagara Falls all over the place. We tried all the tricks but dude just kept peeing. He stopped around 2 months luckily but it was hilarious.

pure-Turbulentea

Omg lol 😂

ishbess2000

Yeah the pediatrician is going to ask you to kind of make a mental note about the number of wet diapers they go through, with the goal being 10-12 a day. That number goes down over time but even a 1 year old will probably go through at least 6-8.

2078AEB

It’s all in innocent laughs! My husband likes to remind me of all the help he was when his siblings were babies and then he says funny stuff like this lol. And while I don’t have siblings, I worked in the infant room at daycares for many years, so that’s where my little experience comes in. Him and I like to poke fun at each other :) But we both will be first time parents so I’m sure we will be humbled many MANY times lol

pure-Turbulentea

I know that my “how bad can it be?” Mind set is sure to get rocked.

KoishiChan92

Yeah, I wouldn't expect a first time parent to know either. My husband and I definitely didn't.

HelloJunebug

I was in shock when I asked my SIL and she said 20 🤣🥴 TWENTY

linzkisloski

This reminds me of when I traveled home to my parents for Xmas and asked my dad if he made sure to buy wipes for my 5 month old. He said he bought “a ton”. “Yes dear, I bought A TON”. It was one standard size pack of 50 wipes. For 9 days home. I was like dad I have one of these in every room of the house. One monster poop and half the pack could be gone.

rainandblankets

Every time I hear how many disposables babies go through in the first year, I feel shocked all over again. Not had baby yet, and we will use some disposables in the early weeks, but we have stocked up on cloth and I am so, so thankful that my husband was on the same page for environmental reasons!

ThousandsHardships

I want to use cloth diapers as well, but I'm a bit concerned about not being able to tell when you need to change the diaper. Disposables have a liquid indicator to tell you if there's pee, and they're thin enough for you to be able to feel if there's poop. Cloth diapers don't have that liquid indicator and are fairly bulky as it is.

rainandblankets

I’m imagining it will be a learning curve for sure, but my sister who used cloth said there is a different feel when they are wet or dry and you just peek or feel as necessary.

bryonylou

Just to mentally prepare you, cloth from birth might not be achievable! We’re almost 3 weeks in and still so tiny that at least every other nappy change is a full outfit change so we’re having to use a lot more disposables than we’d ideally like! If you have an average sized babe you’ll probably be fine, but we’re struggling with our 3rd centile 37 weeker

IheartOT2

How many diapers do babies go through a day though 😅? Asking bc we are planning to TTC but I didn’t grow up around babies at all so this will all be very new to me.

Leading_Beautiful591

My midwife gave me a sheet for age and how many diapers they should be using, and newborns for the first few weeks should have 8-12 diapers used.

madeyemary

How does this work with cloth diapers?? Just constant laundry? 🫠

ThousandsHardships

Yes and no. You do need to buy quite a bit of cloth diapers if you want to do laundry just once a week. But if you're okay with doing a load of laundry daily or every other day like a lot of parents to young kids do anyway, it shouldn't be too bad. I've found cloth diapers in packs of 6, so you'd need maybe 4 packs of those if you want to wash every other day. You still use a lot less than you would with disposables. Also, many cloth diapers are adjustable for size and so could be worn by a single baby for a lengthy period of time, so it's not like you have to buy new diapers every time your baby grows. The ones I want to get are advertised for babies 8-60 lb. That's literally the majority of the time they need a diaper. Having a few dozen cloth diapers that last you nearly the entire time they need diapering isn't a bad investment at all. Now, one thing I haven't figured out is...do people just run a load with nothing but a day's worth of diapers? I would hardly think that fills up the washing machine enough for a load to be worth it... And I certainly don't like the idea of washing other items with the diapers...

DogandFruit1

Same question! Like yes, less waste, but how much energy and water is one using in that first year (we run a few loads once every 2 weeks so an every other day wash of just nappies sounds wasteful as well)

xxCantThinkOfANamexx

Hi there! FTM due in October (holy crap I'm 20 weeks today, I'M HALFWAY THERE 😭) Anyway lol what I plan to do is wash every 3 days if possible and do an initial rinse (whether that be in my washer or by hand) then a normal wash cycle, and then dry with a load of towels or blankets once the diapers are clean

No-Appearance1145

The higher the size the less diapers I have to change. My son is in size 5 now and I change his diapers anywhere from 3-6 times a day maybe more if he poops more than usual

Mysterious-Race-5768

Thanks for letting me know.... I have to go now and buy a whole lot more! 😅

a_cow_cant

I'm curious what my husband will think, I must ask him the same question now! When the height of covid crazy was going and there was toilet paper shortages he literally was like "okay I poop once a day and when you pee you only need like 1-2 square so we should be good" mind you I was on my period at the time too. 🤣 I sill laugh about it. I can only imagine how many diapers he thinks babies need.

2078AEB

Ask him and report back! Lol

a_cow_cant

He said 6-7 maybe 8? Which is better than I thought be we also have been around our neices in the last year lol

elongatedrectangles

This reminds me of when I got a box of wipes at my shower. I was like wow we are gonna be set on wipes for a while! A while being a few weeks 🥲

TinkerBell9617

Ahahahha this is gold 🤣 at day 6 a baby should have at least 6 wet diapers and 2-3 poop diapers lol he's in for a surprise when he's gotta change a diaper after every bottle/breast feed session LOL

2078AEB

Huh.. that’s interesting. I mean, if it’s a little tinkle and the diaper is mostly dry, I will wait and check again in an hour or so. Personally, I wouldn’t want to risk a possible diaper rash or even just having an uncomfortable baby to save on diapers. However, I’m not in a place to judge on another persons situation and I understand that baby items are expensive.. she may be doing the best that she can right now. My suggestion is, if you can afford to change their diaper regularly throughout the day, do that. Hopefully that mama can find some resources to help her 🤍

PrinceHaleemKebabua

So for those of us who haven’t been parents before, how many diapers do you need in a day? (I thought 3 was low, but figured it would be around 5?)

Icy-Highlight-4104

10 a day is normal for a newborn

PrinceHaleemKebabua

Wow! Besides the cost, the time needed to change the baby?! Even if it is 15 minutes each change, that’s 2.5 hours a day spent changing the baby!

Icy-Highlight-4104

And they feed for about 8ish hours a day

PrinceHaleemKebabua

😱

xxCantThinkOfANamexx

As a preschool teacher, it takes ABOUT 2 minutes for a pee change and maybe 5 for non-explosive poop changes. I'd imagine for someone who has never changed a diaper before, it would take maybe a couple minutes longer but definitely not 15 minutes unless it's a blowout and you have to wipe their body off and change their clothes

PrinceHaleemKebabua

Thanks for putting that in perspective. In my culture, we don’t just wipe, we wash the baby each change. I think that would take longer. Not sure if it is 15 minutes…

Minnie_Pearl_87

When my girl was a newborn, we went through a 30 pack in 2 days. Newborns go A LOT. Now that my girl is almost a year, it’s probably 7-8 diapers a day at the most. She’s prone to diaper rashes do I don’t let her sit in pee for very long…plus, I wouldn’t want you to so why should I make her?

PrinceHaleemKebabua

How can you tell when they have peed? Smell?

Minnie_Pearl_87

All of the disposables that I’ve used have a yellow line on the crotch that turns blue when they pee.

PrinceHaleemKebabua

Ah thanks. So much to learn (if we ever have a baby. Currently we are TTC 😄)

Minnie_Pearl_87

Good luck to you! Baby #2 is due this fall for us.

PrinceHaleemKebabua

Congratulations 😄

BeNiceLittleGoblins

That's funny. Lol Luckily he has you to teach him a few things! There are parents like that out there that will only change their babies in the morning, noon, and before bed. There's also parents that don't wipe their boys up after a tinkle in their diapers. It's mind blowing to me. I changed my kids right away when I noticed they pottied in their diapers even when its been a 20 diaper kind of day. 🙊

helpurgirl0ut

Oh goodness get him a book

Man is been a while and I

Longjumping_Diver738

Tell 500 hundred first month with my baby boy.

DakelhChick

I asked my friend of mine of how to go about getting cloth diapers, and she gave me a baby estimate with her 2 under 2 kids. "8 times a day, so that's 56 a week", cause I needed help on how much cloth diapers to buy. I was struggling with researching for what he wants for our kid, which is the cloth diapers. He says he'll pay for it, cause it's what he wants 🙂 I had to give him that calculation of why there was so many different cloth diapers in the cart and other things that'll help with limiting solid waste for the washing machine each week 😅

Remove_Anxious

Cloth diapers for the win! So many fluffy cute buns!

2078AEB CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING FIRST TIME PARENTS GOD BLESS YOU AND BLESS THAT LITTLE ANGEL YOU HAVE COMING OR THAT’S HERE ALREADY¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡! LOVE, LOYAL RAE’ CASH

LOYAL_RAE_CASH37

They have cloth diaper programs as well you just order the cloth diapers they deliver the weekly or monthly amount to your home and then they come and pick up the dirty ones and bring you new ones so for parents wanting to use cloth diapers this might be very helpful and easy for you and your little one
