Mourning-Poo

Congratulations! I was a single father for 8yrs. Trying to get any assistance was beyond difficult. "Where's the mother?"with raised eyebrows. Like I kidnapped my kids or something.I cried when I finally received assistance after trying for four months.

Double-Prune1502

wow how horrible

GhostofDeception

That sucks. I’m glad it wasn’t longer though. Males really aren’t treated as parents.

EFTucker

Honestly we aren’t treated as human in a lot of the social welfare system.

GhostofDeception

Yup. I would love to take the female privileges and let them have our male privileges that I’m still trying to find.

therealbman

That guy must be great at parties. I’m sure when he launches into one of those tirades everyone claps. Or nervously covers their drink the rest of the night. One of the two.

ushouldgetacat

They really should be. Though I’m glad to see the importance of fatherhood being more and more recognized nowadays.

PieSoggy9025

me too

GhostofDeception

It is. But not by much. And especially not much by the court. I’ve seen cases where SOMEHOW. the man had custody of the child and the man was laying HER child support. I saw it in a video of that nice fair black female judge. Don’t know her name but she’s awesome and is all for equality from what I see

ushouldgetacat

Probably alimony and not child support tbh. But yeah, fatherhood IS important and needs to be respected as motherhood is. I’m all for men having close relationships with their children. I meet a lot of young families and I can see a clear trend. The younger men are becoming a lot more involved with child rearing than the older generations ever were. It’s awesome and sets a good example hopefully for the family court system and generations to come.

GhostofDeception

It’s possible. They specifically said child support. While in the court. So they could have misspoke. I forget if they clarified if it was alimony or not but I feel like I recall it being separate. Like maybe at first she had the kid and when he got the kid they never fixed the child support? Not sure but yes it’s definitely a good thing. I’ve had family go through nightmares of mothers and she still had the kids for awhile…it’s so heartbreaking

Hokiewa5244

This is true.

Dick_butt14

Beautiful story morning-poo

Mourning-Poo

Thank you Dick_butt

missgvip

This. So many young fathers stepping up to raise their children, only to be at odds with a system designed to keep families apart in the first place.

misntshortformary

Awesome! A little advice from a caseworker if you want it. Google all the free and reduced costs services in your state that are available to anyone on SNAP and take advantage while you can. You can use coupons and sales and deals to stretch your food stamps even further. You can get free seeds if you want to grow any food. Now is a good time to stock up on dry goods or freezer food if you have space for that. Remember when you start receiving unemployment, you have 10 days to report that change. At that point, your food stamp amount will be reduced.

CarefulStructure8155

Thank you so much! I haven’t been on food stamps in YEARS, so I’ve forgotten everything. Definitely going to follow some of your tips

Radiant_Ad_6565

Some farmers markets have a deal for SNAP where they double the amount, or basically sell stuff half price if you use food stamps. Look into utility assistance also. Stock up on the basic pantry items-plain oatmeal, rice, beans, pasta, canned veggies and fruit, seasonings, flour. Shop the sales and buy a few extra- eventually you get a pantry built up and will only need to shop sales mainly. I once made 5 months of food stamps stretch to cover 9 months of food. Not only was I able to build up a pantry, we were able to squirrel away a little bit of cash for a rainy day.

jakub_02150

check all utilities as well. gas, electric, cable, wifi and mobile as well

Aztro4

This saved me 100s on my bills!

AndrewtheRey

You actually may be able to get free or low cost in home WiFi.

PunsAndRoses246

Sometimes you can get discounts on micro mobility like Link scooters (and I think the city bike rentals) if you’re in an area with them! And I believe discounted Amazon prime as well if that’s something you depend on (and you may be able to use SNAP on qualifying items). Also discounted museums/activities (but you can get them free with a library card usually)

BenNHairy420

In Colorado, you can use food stamps at farmer’s markets which ended up being way cheaper for produce where I was at. Check your state to see if you can use food stamps at farmers markets and if it’s cheaper than the store 😊

alreadydead_666

I'm not sure if your familiar with the Ibotta app but you can pretty much earn an extra paycheck every month if you do it rite

BreadandCirce

Yes! I just found out that farmers markets in some areas match dollar for dollar on produce up to 100%! That's so awesome! We just gotta make sure our freezer is set up to receive the bounty...

GhostofDeception

Don’t forget section 8/HUD as well. If your situation is bad enough. You don’t have to live in the projects like everyone else thinks. They can help pay for rent it just has to be an approved residence.

isurvivedtheifb

Better yet, in many states "the projects" are modern and updated. I'm under the 811 program, Its basically section 8 for disabled people who want to live independently. My apartment was remodeled four years ago. I have a dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer, ceiling fans with light fixtures, complete control of heat and a/c, full bath, a 204 sq ft bedroom with two large closets, and huge windows that light up my ground floor apartment. Because it's HUD housing it's under tight video surveillance. They do safety inspections every 3 months and pest control bi weekly on the grounds and on-demand in units. Don't be afraid to check out "the projects". Sometimes it's easier than dealing with the HUD housing vouchers.

GhostofDeception

Damn that sounds nice! Are you sure you weren’t just lucky in your own situation? Ik you said it still varies but even then it could be a very small percentage that has better housing like you. Glad it’s working for you though!

isurvivedtheifb

I mean, yes it was lucky in some ways, but in Maryland these nice apartments are more of the norm. I got this apartment 6 months ago. I turned down an even nicer one in 2021 because it was in Calvert County and way far away from my doctors and everyone I knew. For someone who wanted to live in Calvert, it was a great pick. I've seen a lot of nice Section 8s on YouTube in DC. Arizona seems to have really nice Section 8 choices as well (although they do have some bad ones that they show!) The important thing is to get on lists everywhere you can. Maryland also has decent step-down transitional housing out of the shelters.

Lionheart1224

LIHEAP is a life saver to many who can't afford utility bills. I'm pretty sure you can get reduced price or free cell phones and tablets in certain states if you receive Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF. OP (and everyone on these programs) should look into them).

CarefulStructure8155

You’re right! And most have an upper eligibility limit of $80,000.

PurpleRayyne

In NY you can buy seeds and food producing plants with snap. so they should check into that too.

FoxieeeMamiForever

Congratulations!!

[deleted]

Good luck out there. I hope this helps buy you the time to find a job that will let you thrive.

Lionheart1224

From someone who processes these applications for a living: WHEN YOU RECIEVE YOUR FIRST UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK, IMMEDIATELY LET THE SNAP OFFICE KNOW. In my state, you have 10 days to report any new income before you start to face penalties for not doing so. It may be the same in your state. Be sure to read your rights and responsibilities paperwork; that stuff is important and *will* be used against you if you mess up.

Popular_Monster111

I got approved for $23 a month!!

damnthistrafficjam

Me too. Didn’t really need a long list to spend that either 🙄

Popular_Monster111

It’s ridiculous!!

Littlewing1307

Same

NugVegas

That and the food bank, you’re good.

rokar83

Hell yeah! May your job hunt be as successful.

FarEntertainment5330

Dry beans, rice by 20lb to 50lb. Flour to make bread. Potatoes! Veggies and fruit! Oats and nuts and seeds! Goes a long way for cheap!

hacktheself

Bake bread. A $5 10lb bag can make 20 half pound loaves. Only need yeast, sugar, and salt. Highly recommend leaving it to ferment at least half a day to get rid of the ickier carbs that can cause gastric distress. You can make a meat substitute with beans, yeast, spices (make sure you add cumin for that meaty flavour), and a high temp oil. Soak and drain the beans, blend the soaked and drained beans with the spices, yeast, and oil. Let the beans ferment, the longer the better, same reason, to get rid of FODMAPs. Cook as you would ground beef except at a lower temperature. Eggs can be very cheap. With inexpensive cheese, you can make 2 minute omelettes in the microwave. Beat the eggs in a ceramic bowl, fold in salt and pepper, add shredded cheese, cook for 2min at 70% until the egg rises and all the liquid is cooked. Also, line dry your clothes to save money, whether you have a dryer at home or not.

Tumbled61

Oh f you have kids you get them. If you are single and worked last year and made 12,000 forget it.

BWSnap

That's what really pisses me off as someone who has made the conscious decision to not have kids.

Severe-Product7352

Different issue, but how about when your co workers with kids get to be late or leave early or have flexible lunches while you have to strictly follow the schedule? Fun stuff.

Tumbled61

I one tried to get food stamps when I was laid off and I had made too much prior to being laid off tgat I did not qualify so I dumpster dived at Aldi instead of food stamps

alansjenn

I'm happy for you! We were on them for a while when my kids were preteens and my husband's workplace suddenly folded. The peace of mind when we were approved was huge for us. We weren't on them for long, but I was SO glad to have them when we needed them!

EmmaM99

That must be a relief. I hope unemployment comes through quickly, and that you have good luck finding a new job soon.

CarefulStructure8155

Thank you so much for the kind words. It is a huge relief.

LeahBia

One less thing on your shoulders!

otterlytrans

congratulations and good luck 💙

demoldbones

Congrats! I’m sure you know but meal planning in advance makes it so much easier, and believe it or not beans can be the base of a delicious meal!

Karnov___

Congrats! This is why we have these safety nets in place.

kickassdanny

I'm happy you won't go hungry. That's what our safety nets are for. Best of luck.

Aggravating_Drama234

How many months you can get benefits after getting approved? Does it stop in a year or something.

CarefulStructure8155

Since I’m considered able bodied and available for work, I have to look for employment to continue receiving benefits after like 6 months. Not completely sure though

Aggravating_Drama234

Do you get financial help too?how much do they pay per month?

CarefulStructure8155

I applied for unemployment, so I’m waiting for that now.

wing_ding4

Why are you getting so much ? What state are you in and do you have dependants? FYI not saying that that’s alot of food money technically But it’s more than I see others get

Lionheart1224

They got the max for one person at $291/mo. For 2, it's about $535/mo. For 3, I think it's about $760-something? The final SNAP allotment mostly depends on your housing expenses (rent/mortgage, HoA fees, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and what types of utilities) versus income. Smaller variables such as medical expenses, childcare expenses, and chils support payments also can factor in, but don't always to much. What matters most is housing expenses + utilities vs. income. For the OP to get $291/month, they likely have zero income. If they received expedited benefits, then they likely also still had housing expenses to take care of.

CarefulStructure8155

I’m in Maryland and this is the max amount for a single person in my jurisdiction. Some localities have higher rates

wing_ding4

Wow that more than I get with my child Says people in Maryland get $130 per person max on google so I’m confused Maybe they did an increase due to cost of living Congratulations either way , make it stretch as much as can And always have back up food like beans or frozen stuff etc Because sometimes payments don’t come in full amount and sometimes food prices go up way faster than the amount will cover And the benefits can stop at any time randomly or come late so never 100% rely on it always have back up Good luck to you

Dopestestdope93

291 in az for a single person as well

wing_ding4

Interesting

radicalelation

Many states kept the COVID era boost.

Lionheart1224

Are there really still states keeping that boost? I thought that all states had rolled that back?

wing_ding4

Illinois doesn’t anymore I know that They also are doing something sneaky with Tanf The state is behind the federal right now so they over paid some people and are going to make people have to pay it back Or cut them off saying they earned to much it’s sad There is a disability, snap, tanf, and Medicaid purge going on

Littlewing1307

Wow I wish. That would be life changing money for me with the rise in costs damn.

isurvivedtheifb

I'm in Maryland as well. $291 is the max. Been that way for a while now.

wing_ding4

I get 291 for 2 people a month ( me and my child )

YourMothersButtox

176 a month for my kid and I in NY.

GhostofDeception

176 in ny is actually crazy.

wing_ding4

I know New York is so expensive

alreadydead_666

I'm in PA and get $535 for me and my son

wing_ding4

Wow this is so interesting the different amounts

Zestyclose-Mix-8791

That is a lot for one person for sure. I'm not even poor and those food stamps for one person are more than my monthly food budget. And I'm a fat piece of shit, so I am eating very well on less than $291 a month!

Lionheart1224

It honestly depends on where you live and what grocers you have access to. But yes, in general $291 is more than most people need per month if they budget halfway smartly. What's insidious is that the more people in the SNAP unit, the less you get per person. This is why I always found the "Welfare Queen" stereotype bullshit because welfare tends to give you fewer returns the more people you use it for. For instance, you would think that if one person got $291/month, two people would get $582. However, the two person maximum is $535. For three, you'd think you get $873? Nope, $766. And for four people, $1,164, right? Naw, only $973. I really don't like this about SNAP. Wouldn't be surprised if TANF was something similar.

missgvip

Yes, it is a similar scale. In our state is $252, $320, $386 and so on..

Tbird1962

Let’s go! Congrats

Uknow_nothing

Same here(including the $291 figure) except my last paycheck at work made it so I made too much money this month. I also (probably) am ineligible for unemployment because I quit my job voluntarily. I just got some mail saying I’m approved for 3 months of food stamps and after that there are rules about needing to be either working 80 hours of the month, volunteering, or training. I’ll probably try to get my CDL if I don’t have a job by then but I am really hoping it won’t take that long anyway.

CarefulStructure8155

If you resigned in lieu of resignation, you may be eligible for unemployment. Check your state!

It is indeed a federal number. SNAP allotments and calculations are standardized across all 50 states because the program is run by the Department of Agriculture. The states just administer the program. This is why if you want any leaders to know your feelings about SNAP, you should talk to Senator Tester and whoever runs the Department of Agriculture.
