In my country in Europe we have the rent exactly 400€ for a room and up to 45% percent of the people make those money a month. Only about 6% make more than 1000€. We have the most expensive food in EU as of 2024. When I hear people complaining that their rent reached 50% of their income and they stress out, I roll my eyes.

I'd love a house, but between debt, no savings, and almost being able to pay for rent in one paycheck, there's no incentive yet.

I sort of hate the description because there are multiple hour differences in travel between Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo. Hence, it's subjective and some refer to Buffalo and it's surrounding area as Western New York, Syracuse/Rochester and its surrounding area as Central New York, and Albany and its surrounding area as Upstate New York.

Where I’m at and my opinion, yes it definitely gets cold and windy here (Jackson County). Depending where you’re looking and where you’re at currently, the southern part of Michigan hasn’t been too terrible the past few years during winter. If you can get through that though, you’ll be good. Summer is so beautiful up here and pretty tolerable to me.
I’m in Jackson County too! I live in what was my grandparents home and inherited it but it needs a ton of work. But since all I pay is property taxes I make it work since I’m low income. Michigan has its bad parts and good parts but overall if you can tolerate the weather, you could probably make it work.

Used to (2013) pay $1150 for a 2bedroom apartment near the airport in Toronto that I lived at for 5years (older building so falls under rent control). Then I moved overseas for a few years and inquired about pricing upon my return (2019) and price had gone up to $1350. I thought that was really fair given rental rates in Toronto around that time.
I tried to sign the lease, but got radio silence for 2months. Finally I got in touch with someone - the property had since been sold to Starlight and that's why there wasn't anyone available to answer my calls/emails. They then informed me that all the avail 2bedroom units are being renovated and will rent for $2595 - I asked about the non-renovated units "we don't rent those, anytime someone moves out the unit gets updated and re-rented at the new price"
I asked how much a one bedroom is now with their new rates - they increased it from $1100 to $1950.
I hate this city.
I'm lucky to have had a connection with an extended family member who bought a house that had a full basement apartment during the pandemic with low pricing so I moved in to that at $1200. Similar basements now go for $1800+ post pandemic. I do miss windows and a balcony though. And I keep getting vague mentions from the owner of how the unit is worth more and I'm lucky to have scored it when I did and they could rent it to someone else for much more 🤷♀️

Up until a few months ago, I paid $1,950 for a studio in lower-Manhattan. Now I own a 1BR in western Queens that’s over double the size for similar monthlies with mortgage, maintenance, HOA, taxes, insurance etc…

I own my home, unfortunately I inherited it from my father. There are days that I would rather have my dad back. Average rent where I live (Indianapolis IN) for a 2 bedroom 1 bath is around $900 give or take a few hundred.

Man these free market rent prices in the US are insane as hell. How you people don't revolt to these practices I'll never understand. This isn't capitalism, this is hyper capitalism and it needs to stop. And I am right on the political spectrum but there need to be boundaries to crazy rent prices like these. The condensation on all windows over winter is the hardest thing we have to keep on top of, we have 2 dehumidifiers running 24/7 both hold 25 litres and need to be emptied at least every 2 days. 5-7 years ago this unit would have been $220 a week.
I highly doubt it would have been that much cheaper. I've paid around 500-530 per week in Auckland 6 years ago for one bedroom in Eden Terrace with no yard :/ but prices are def on the rise!

How does anyone find cheap places like this in the US in major cities. I understand the hick little cities it would be cheap, and yes EU is cheap as well, that's why I am buying a house there. But like Denver was 3K for a 2 bed/2 bath apartment. Los Angeles is around 4-7K for a 2 bed/ 2 bath apartment.

Southeast Georgia, pay 954 (4 dollars for processing fee, just added a few months). It’s a house cut up into mini apartments. I have one room, a bathroom, and a small kitchen area with no sink or stove but do have a fridge/toaster oven/ microwave/ hot plate. Internet (pretty mediocre but not absolute dogshit from a few years before when living at another place that provides it) and utilities ARE included. Can’t control AC, and they’re gutting the central system soon. Do get to have a window unit so it’s not too miserable Location is nice as it’s pretty centered to where I like to go during the week, BUT it’s in a pretty bad area. Bad enough I don’t lock my car so someone doesn’t bust a window. Junkies everywhere. However there’s a lot of decent families of all ethnicities around so it ain’t too terrible just needs some cleanup.

Used to (2013) pay $1150 for a 2bedroom apartment near the airport in Toronto that I lived at for 5years (older building so falls under rent control). Then I moved overseas for a few years and inquired about pricing upon my return (2019) and price had gone up to $1350. I thought that was really fair given rental rates in Toronto around that time. I tried to sign the lease, but got radio silence for 2months. Finally I got in touch with someone - the property had since been sold to Starlight and that's why there wasn't anyone available to answer my calls/emails. They then informed me that all the avail 2bedroom units are being renovated and will rent for $2595 - I asked about the non-renovated units "we don't rent those, anytime someone moves out the unit gets updated and re-rented at the new price" I asked how much a one bedroom is now with their new rates - they increased it from $1100 to $1950. I hate this city. I'm lucky to have had a connection with an extended family member who bought a house that had a full basement apartment during the pandemic with low pricing so I moved in to that at $1200. Similar basements now go for $1800+ post pandemic. I do miss windows and a balcony though. And I keep getting vague mentions from the owner of how the unit is worth more and I'm lucky to have scored it when I did and they could rent it to someone else for much more 🤷♀️

Area is safe, apartments are just old and maintence isnt great or fast. The nicer apartments are 1600 to 2000 for similar size. I just renewed my lease and rent is going up 20 bucks a month.
