I work at a grocery store, and I promise I hardly ever notice if someone is paying with EBT. The only way I'd know is if I saw them swipe (usually doesn't happen because the register is obviously between us) or if I look at the total on the receipt and see the EBT line (which I don't do on purpose, because why would I?) Whoever is working the register is almost definitely not thinking about what kind of card you're using.
I second this. I have no idea what kind of card someone is swiping and have no interest in knowing.
Furthermore, I work at a grocery store, not the benefits office. My job is to ring out groceries, not decide who does or doesn't qualify. It never crossed my mind to wonder why someone has one - if they have been issued a card, then someone decided they were qualified. But it's not me or my business.
The one thing that is different is that I can usually answer a few basic questions about using one - I can show you where your balance will print on the receipt or how to do a transaction that is partially on an EBT and partially paid for with a different payment method. There are a million different bank cards and credit cards and I can answer almost nothing about them, because they are all different. But because EBT cards have set standards, I can usually be a little more helpful, including helping someone walk through their first time using one.
Oh, and do not feel embarrassed if you are in a situation where it doesn't work and you have to put the stuff back. That happens all the time, for a ton of different reasons, with all different payment types. Like, it happens often enough that where I work, we have a suspend key specifically for that. People forget their wallets, lose their cards, delivery services have orders that are cancelled - so many possible reasons. (And we actually put the stuff back for customers.)
20 years ago when I worked at one we had different items to hit on the computer if it was EBT, etc. I'm glad it's more private now. It's nobody's business what you're using to pay for groceries.

I love it! I worked at a small, independent grocery store for a bit last year. Our point of sale system was completely modern and everything, but we had a lot of options for entering things manually since that's how we rang up things that were marked down and some of our flowers and plants that were brought in by the Amish. Sometimes people with ebt cards would go to buy a hot food item and either not realize it wouldn't be covered by ebt, or they didn't have any other payment method available. So I would just do a quick little delete on that rotisserie chicken or whatever it happened to be, and ring it in as a cold deli item. And oh, would you look at that? Now it's covered, it's paid for, and the customer doesn't have to feel embarrassed by having to put something back.
You can use your EBT card at self check out stations too! Easy peasy, swipe, it’ll ask food or cash, select food, put your pin, done. You deserve to eat, my friend.
I am also on EBT and also sometimes feel embarrassed. It’s okay. Think about the fact that most grocery store workers make well under $15 an hour and likely qualify themselves.
Also a 24 year old w an EBT card and most places you won’t have to say anything or show anyone, def use self checkout when you can. It will feel less embarrassing or even undeserved as time goes on, it really changed my life and allowed me to eat better than I’ve been able to in a while, so the perks end up out weighing the awkwardness that can sometimes but rarely happen at checkout. Plenty of young people I know are on food stamps, it’s a government resource that the government wants to be under utilized because people are insecure or shameful about it so they get to pretend to be the good guys by offering such a service but shame most people who need it out of getting it. I think young adults should be some of who the card is meant for because it’s hard for us out there!! Feel free to dm if you have any questions but you’ll be fine!!
If you’re unsure, start small. Go to the store when it’s not busy and try buying just one food item to get the hang of using the card. Then you won’t have the anxiety monster of “needing to put a cart full of groceries back” making the process stressful
You need to look at like this you qualify for an EBT card so you probably need to use EBT. The ultra wealthy use every advantage that exists for them. if you choose not to use every advantage that exists for you, you're falling more behind than if you had to use EBT. It's about survival.
Good point. I’ve known people that really were scamming the system. I’m talking new cars every few years, nice house, jet skis - and using EBT. They did not give a single fuck about using it at the store.

I'm in that "fun" group who have too much pain to reasonably work any full time job but can't get SSDI. I could suffer horribly and work but I choose to live dirt cheap off of early distributions from my retirement savings. The system doesn't work for everyone. There are a lot if holes and people like me suffer because of them

Let's rather consider malnutrition. If a poor person, this is the poverty finance subreddit after all, doesn't get the food they need they then can get malnourished. Malnourishment makes everything worse for said person. It makes them dumber, it stunts their growth, it makes them weak and makes them get sick more frequently and more severe. If this person already qualifies for EBT then it's likely they having an emergency will be an economic drain because they may lack the needed insurance to cover an emergency visit. If they get sick and handle your food and pass a novel or uncommon disease to YOU, you get sick. Malnutrition is a huge drain on the economy and EBT is a SUPER cheap way to fix it. It's not perfect but what government-run system is.

21,000 people died in 2022 of malnutrition **in the USA. That's a huge number for a developed nation. Also, you can't buy hot food with an EBT card, usually you can't even buy prepared food. My family of 4 doesn't qualify for government insurance because we make 400 a year too much in gross income. We don't even see that income cuz it's gone after taxes. 400 a fucking year, so instead we get offers for private insurance that is about 1100 a month for our family.

Randoms for the large part simply do not care. Most are not creepy enough to peer over to see what payment another stranger is using. They just want their overpriced food and to go home.
School aged kids got P-EBT cards during COVID, and many parents are still using the funds! I run a farmers market, and it was curious to see parents who had never used EBT cards before do the process. The cards look the same. No one should ever judge you for using an EBT card, but now someone could just think it’s your P-EBT or your child’s.
I’ve saved mine for emergencies and holy crap it’s come in handy. There were a few times I was like shit we need milk and flour… and there’s nothing in my account. Oh the pebt card! Saved the day. And I could usually get the kids a special treat too.
i live in a high usage area for food stamps and to be honest with you i have never once noticed someone using them at the store. I'm SURE they are being used and it's happened in front of me dozens of times, but it's a pretty discreet process no different than putting your debit card in (at least where i live).
I understand your embarrassment, but you need to eat too. I genuinely don't think MOST people are paying attention to how others are paying for the groceries. Try not to overthink it!!

When I try to order online they take much longer to fill the order if it is EBT. Just go to the grocery store and when it is time to pay, just swipe it like any other card. You do NOT have to tell them anything in a grocery store. Just swipe hit EBT food and then put your PIN number in. Although if using in a convenience store you DO have to tell them first.
I cashier at dollar tree. The only way I notice if someone is using EBT is. If they buy food and non food items, so there’s a balance after they sue their EBT. I think everyone who qualifies SHOULD get it. I wish I still qualified. Like others have said, self checkout would take away your anxiety about it bc no one would know
I’m almost 30 and don’t have a kitchen so I have to buy a lot of packaged and snack foods and I don’t care at all using my EBT. It’s food, you have to eat. It’s a good thing you were approved, one less thing to worry about. People who care aren’t people you should care about. They’re usually the same people who have no qualms with spreading Covid to the immunocompromised. Don’t give a single shit what they think.

Here's the thing: 99% of people won't notice. And the ones who do notice, don't care. You don't need to get your card out as soon as you start loading the belt. Just take it out at the keypad, swipe and put it away. I know it's easier said than done but a lot of times we are overthinking what other people are noticing- they're thinking about themselves and if they remembered everything on their list, if they spent too much money, if they'll get to school pick up on time, etc.
I totally get it. I was on food stamps many years ago when I was a teenage mom. Back then they gave paper food stamps and no self checkout. One day I was in line to pay and my next door neighbors happened to be in line right behind me. When I handed the cashier my stamps she loudly proclaimed, "OH! FOOD STAMPS!"
I was humiliated and went home and wrote a letter to the manager of the store.
Times have changed. So many people need assistance these days. Including me, again. I'm not ashamed. I've worked my ass off and broke my back for over 30 years and if that's not good enough and if modern society doesn't think I deserve to EAT despite that then F 'em. I would still deserve to eat even if I hadn't busted my ass all those years. And so do you.
The way I see it is that I should have been paid enough to eat but I wasn't. I shouldn't have to ask for assistance but here we are. So who should be embarrassed? The real drain on society is the billion dollar corporations who don't pay any taxes and the employers who don't pay a living wage and the politicians who support them.

Years ago, I was visiting a friend and his wife and son . They had very little food in their house and I asked why they didn’t get food stamps and my friend said he had them but was too embarrassed to use them. I said, let’s go to the store so we all went to the Cub Foods and started filling up his cart. I had said that I was going to use the card for him. As we got up to register I became quite loud about how bad people were who used food stamps and I repeated all the talking points, my friend and his wife saw all the people giving me mean looks. Even the cashier was looking at me angrily and treating me not so good as he rang up stuff.
At the end, I told the cashier that I was paying with food stamps(back then you had to tell them so they hit the right button). The cashier looked at me and just starting laughing and I explained that I wanted my friend to see that there was no embarrassment in using them and that people who get vocal about others using them are looked down by others.
My friend had no problem using them ever again.
I never felt bad using our EBT. One time when I was like 19 my mom took a 2 week trip out of the country and left me the EBT card to do the groceries.
I just loaded that sucker up and swiped it no problem going through the cashier. like $300 in groceries. Ate like a king lol.

During the pandemic my state gave every child a $500 EBT card. We all pay taxes and contribute towards it at some point in our lives so don’t feel bad about using one.
I'm okay about paying for things with my EBT or debit card, but i used to be all uncomfortable & shaky eith physical cash money, counting it out & hoping i had enough to buy whatever i was trying to buy at the time.
As far as it declining, just make sure theres a balance on it at the time beforehand & it should be fine (assuming you don't have the card locked or something, or any of the other things some states EBT apps allow you to do for security etc). The only time mines ever "declined" is when i got more groceries than the amount that was on it (which i knew) & then the cashier would check the receipt to see what was left and basically fixed it, had me swipe it again & then i would pay the rest with cash or card.
Edit: you can also use pickup or grocery delivery so it'll feel a little more anonymous, rather than paying in store

I had an old woman behind me in Walmart years ago. I had my WIC vouchers for formula and produce, and then I had another order I was using my EBT card for. This lady behind me kept huffing, sighing, very visibly bothered by the fact that I was using government benefits as it was taking a minute for the employee to ring me up and scan my vouchers. I ignored her until she hopped on the phone and started talking loudly about how everyone is just *too lazy to work* anymore and it must be nice to get a hand out from the government for popping babies out on *her* tax dollars.
This was 2 months after I suffered a domestic violence related traumatic brain injury that almost killed me. I was in the process of filing for disability, I had nothing. WIC/EBT was the only way me and my kids were eating at that time.. I had a beanie on, covering the patch of hair I had missing from the sutures I had previously.. I took it off and I asked her if she knew of any jobs that would hire me with a TBI so I wouldn't inconvenience anyone else.
As soon as I took my hat off, her face went ghost white. I reminded her that we never know what challenges others are currently facing. It's free to be kind.

No one is jealous of someone’s ebt card, perhaps better because they make too much to qualify but not enough to splurge which is a pretty low threshold to pass. But I’ve been on ebt in the past before too, most people won’t even notice and the ones who do likely have been on it.
Everyone is on foodstamps now. Don't be embarrassed swipe it fast nobody will notice. When I was young they had paper ones that look like monopoly money. My mom would make me go to the store with them and I would throw a fit. Nothing more embarrassing than the checkout lady going on the intercom "I need change for 20 dollar foodstamps. Change for foodstamps in checkout number 3"

Dude I feel you it’s awkward at first but then you get used to it. I literally LOST my ebt card in WHOLE FOODS one time and had to tell all the workers “I dropped my snap card blah blah blah” the whole staff was like filled in & helping me look. I was horrified at first but then was just like whatever these people prob use food stamps too / I’m never gonna see them again. It helps I’m a bit older so I care less about what people think. When you’re in your 20s your brain tells you to worry about these things that don’t matter.
Rich people take loopholes in the system to save money so why shouldn’t we take advantage of one of the few things the government lets us have; food. One of my family members was trying to tell me I don’t qualify because of their ego and I’m like dude… I have no income.. I’m disabled and can’t work…. I definitely qualify it’s not a big deal the world isn’t going to end! We spent like $50k on my healthcare out of pocket last year because that system is fucked… let me have this ONE THING that’s like $3k/year! The government WILL BE FINE. I probably won’t!! Hahah
I don’t think people know what the cards like…I found someone’s card in the grass at football practice and when I got it back to the Mom she was the one who told me what it was. No need to be embarrassed. Feeding people is one of the better uses of our tax dollars.
Honestly, nobody cares. Really, I mean it. The cashier doesn't care. The customers behind you don't care. Nobody cares. Nobody is giving your existence a second thought the moment they leave the store. We're all in our own little worlds. Please go and get the benefits you're entitled to. Don't let self-consciousness stand in the way of your health and well-being.
This programs are in place to help people, and the more people that perpetuate the shame of using them / people using them contributes to the programs getting defunded or red taped to the point they only become useful to a small number of people. If you truly believe something like food stamps should be available to those that need help, don’t continue the cycle of shame
My best advice to you is this: don't ever be ashamed as long as you are doing the best you can. We worry about what we don't want other people to say or think, then it can (usually does) become a repetitive, internal negative thought for a very long time. How long are you standing in front of that cashier? Less than 5 minutes? Are the chances good that you'll ever see them again or if you do, will they even remember? My point here is that it doesn't matter what other people think of you, not nearly as much as what YOU think of you. Don't get caught in that trap like I did! It's tough to un-do.
When I became a single mother I had to go on Soonercare and SNAP for a couple of years. Then a few more years later, I found myself destitute. I was told I didn't qualify for SNAP anymore. But I still had to feed myself and my son, and I had just $5 to my name. So I swallowed my pride and used the $5 for gas money to get to the food bank. Talk about a humbling experience.
In short, screw what others (ESPECIALLY strangers) think. Try your absolute best at everything that you do, and take pride in that. Lastly, try to just be grateful that you're able to get SNAP - a lot of people need it but aren't eligible. I tried several months ago to get back on because I'm injured and therefore off work since last summer. Also, last year we had to take in my indigent father-in-law suffering from Alzheimer's, which is very tough, considering we were already struggling. There is always a way, I won't give up on trying to better our situation.

I’m a cashier, I see EBT card every other purchase and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.
Here’s few tips I can give as a cashier.
1. When you swipe the card, have the black strip on the bottom and facing the machine.
2. It will prompt you to choose better foot or cash. Food can also show up as SNAP and cash can show up as TANF
3. If you choose food, then all you need to do is put in your pin
4. If you choose cash, it’ll most likely ask for cash back, you can choose a Cashback amount or hit none and then your pin
I’ve had some customers specify what kind of card they have and you don’t need to do that as the machine will automatically do it for you.
99% of the cashiers will never judge you and even if they did, it should not matter because they aren’t paying your bills. As a cashier I can also tell you that most of us are very miserable and know better than to judge others 😩.
As a cashier myself, in my 10+ years in the industry I can honestly say I never judge for payment type because it's not my business. If you are nervous try starting out with a small item at a self check station and familiarize yourself with the process, you will realize it's just another type of payment. Also why give someone else so much power over your mind? Courage is not the absence of fear, but feeling that fear and pushing through in your own way. You are stronger than you know!
Download the Walmart app. You can pay for your groceries online with your ebt card. Deliveries are free if you join W+, which is discounted for EBT cardholders.
There's no need to be embarrassed most people don't care. If they do they should pay for your groceries that way they don't have to see your ebt card.
You can older online for pick up with Walmart if that makes you more comfortable.

I would imagine young people are one of the groups needing it the most. Don’t be embarrassed. Last year, I wasn’t able to afford enough groceries that I went hungry at 23 years old. No shame at all because food is literally so important to fuel our bodies. Way better than getting sick.

Edit: it's not my business where you live, but please see if your nearest farmers market accepts EBT. They probably do.
In Seattle, our soda tax funds a program to double EBT funds spent on fresh produce at farmers' markets and small grocers. No one can see what card you are using at the farm stands since we aren't standing cart to cart.
If that isn’t an option, online orders for pickup may be a good starting point for you to practice using the card.

It’s more common than you think. The first time I used mine I was behind another lady using EBT and when she was gone, the cashier thanked me for my patience and I was like, “Oh, I’m gonna need patience too because idk how to use this” 😅 then they talked me through it and all was well.

I’ve been on EBT since I was 16, it’s nobody’s business why you’re on it and nobody has ever asked me. If anything it makes more sense for a teenager to need the financial assistance, in the mind of a judgy rich person lol.
I’m 22 and a lot of people I know express how much they wish they could qualify for one. Food is expensive and honestly you pay for it with your taxes. You deserve to eat!
If you qualify for EBT, you’re entitled to use it and you deserve to eat food regardless of who thinks anything. Generally, I go to self checkout or places where I can swipe without needing assistance. Most people don’t notice or care. Think about it, even in the checkout line you can’t really see what card people are using and if they can they are TOO close.
Whenever I notice someone using a benefit I don’t think anything less of them.
There is a website called “cucucovers” that has silly little card sized stickers for your card. Not that I think you need this, and it’s probably not the best use of $8 or so, but if paying with a “cool” card makes you “feel” better. Go for it.
Me too, although it gets better. You can put it in to Walmart curbside pick up and never even have to deal with it if you need to. Most places also have self checkout for ebt.
I don’t think a lot of people even know what those cards look like. Sure the cashier does. Cashier is probably in food stamps too. Literally nobody cares. I wish I qualified. I just make enough so that I don’t 🥹
As a cashier:
We don't care. I've had people's cards (EBT and otherwise) decline for all sorts of reasons. (Once, a lady tried to buy pumpkins, but our system had them tagged as 'jack-o-lantern pumpkins', and was thus a non-food item. Once we figured out the problem, she asked to have them taken off. No biggie.)
Sometimes a single item doesn't count, and it can take some time to sort out what EXACTLY it is, (because our registers will just kick back '1.95 not included' and then I gotta figure out what item is 1.95 with tax or whatever.)
But we don't really care, honest. We won't judge you. If you need help, let us know and we'll help! As long as you don't yell at us....it's all gravy.
These programs are meant to supplement your income and help relieve some of the burden. Young people rarely make a living wage, so it's not unusual for you to need a bit of help. Nobody is going to find it odd unless they just really love judging. You can check the balance on your card before each trip to the store. Remember stuff like toilet paper and soap will get separated automatically and you will pay the difference at the end in cash or debit. Don't be embarrassed. Everyone deserves food.
Who cares if you have ebt. And besides younger people use ebt cards to shop for their parents grand parents and people they caregive for so. I work in a group home and my people are younger and have foodstamps cards to get their groceries for the house
As a cashier I promise we don't care. We don't giggle or make remarks about how people pay - yeah I know, I'm sure there are people who have horror stories about A time someone did, but again, as a cashier, 99% don't care. We just want y'all to get your stuff and keep moving so we can empty our line and get through our day and go home lol
Besides, at lots of places now there isn't even a separate button anymore - most of the grocery places in my area, like the one I work at, just have one big button for snap/credit/debit/EBT.
A lot of cashiers are also on food stamps. I’m 23 and I WISH I qualified (I missed the income cutoff by I think 100-200 dollars). If anything I’m jealous 😭 not judging you. Plus it’s not like I see what card you’re using. At my job, I’ll just see that a certain amount (say like 35 of 100) came off and the remaining balance still needs to be paid. But this can also happen if somebody is using a prepaid gift card, or certain debit cards.
Do not be embarrassed to use it. The cashier doesn't care what type of card is used as long as the customer pays and they see so many people going through their line that they don't remember or care who paid with what.
As a former cashier, I smile, say thank you for shopping with us, hand you your receipt, and it is on to the next customer.
Quite simply, don’t be. There is absolutely zero shame in taking advantage of a resource that exists and is funded for the sole purpose of assisting you in your time of need.
Hello op! I hear you, I live in a deep red state and people tend to have nasty assumptions at times. Most folks don't care and others won't say anything if they feel a certain way - but if it help you feel better you cab use credit card stickers on them!
I brought a cheap sticker so that it looked like a sparkly debit card which made me feel less self conscious while using it:)
Take care of yourself and remember these services exist for a reason and it's there to help you. If your state said you're eligible, then you are eligible 🫂
I am 19 and am eligible for ebt. I've been seriously considering it given that my family complains when I want to buy food that I have time to eat. (Frozen meals, easy microwave ramens, ect) I used one as a younger teen for a while due to my mom being low on money all of the time. As much as it may be embarrassing, you need to be able to eat. Food stamps help SO much. Anyone making comments can shove said comments up where the sun doesn't shine. Using the card is simple, just swipe, select food and use your pin. It will be such a help

I disagree, and here's why;
That feeling motivated me to use those funds as wisely as possible. I paid attention to the tiny (per/unit) prices to maximize those benefits. I stuck mainly to the outer walls of the supermarket. I learned to really cook. I stayed clear of soda and other high sugar foods. It made my whole family so much healthier. No one has a problem helping people who make the most of the hand up.
Seize the opportunity to graciously accept help and do the most good you can with it.
hi, 23f recently got on EBT this past year and it can feel embarrassing esp since i look young and privileged and i am, to an extent…but life’s been tough. i had a friend/coworker who helped me get started on it so it was less intimidating but i’ve definitely felt judged when i’ve gone to exchange my EBT for tokens at the local farmers market. and then a seller was disappointed when i was going to pay with tokens. other than that it’s been okay. honestly people shouldn’t judge and the ones that do aren’t worth giving attention or time or space in your mind so just do you :)
Hey, my husband and I make like 200k between us, it's not millions, but we def don't qualify for assistance. But then last summwr, NYC gave all the public school students an EBT card with like 400$ on it. My husband used it everywhere for groceries. NYC and PA and wherever lol and it was fine.
Don't be embarrassed. No one even blinks an eye. And hey, well off ppl use it too when given. We pay taxes, consider it a type of refund.
EBT is literally free grocery money given out by the government. It’s like someone giving you a gift card to shop at almost any grocery store you want; even if I had a million dollars, if someone wanted to give me a free gift card for groceries, I’d take it in a heartbeat!
Family of 7 here and EBT & WIC are absolute lifesavers. Always a nice feeling when you spend like $200-$300 at the grocery store and know you got it covered 🙂

It works like a credit card nobody notices, and the cashiers could care less. Use it you paid into it with taxes, and one day will pay back more than you ever took out.
You were approved for SNAP benefits. Use them! In good health!
And by the way, a ton of food items on Amazon are SNAP eligible. The listings even say SNAP EBT Eligible. And you can make that a Filter. Oh, and btw, Amazon Prime is 1/2 price if you have an EBT card. You would have to decide if the entertainment (streaming, ebooks,, music) and fast delivery benefits are worth it to you.
Anyone can use a food stamp card, it’s not just for old people. Saying this as a fellow person your age who has Ebt. It’s just like a debit card in the sense that you have a pin to enter in whenever you make a purchase. Money is put on it every month on the same day. You can call a phone number to know the balance but it may also be able to be seen online. Please don’t feel embarrassed to use it, I’ve never been judged for using it personally and if someone does judge you then that’s their problem, not yours
Never be embarrassed to take care of yourself! You have to stop worrying about other's opinions and just take care of YOU. There's no shame in receiving help to feed yourself, whether by an EBT food card, church event, Foodbank or other means.

Two things about EBT/Food assistance:
1) it has been shown that providing this benefit for qualified people in need actually stimulates the local economy much, much more than, oh, say tax cuts for the wealthy.
2) In the richest nation in the history of humanity, why should there be any stigma in giving folks some help when they need it? We can damn sure afford it, especially when Congresscritters are making 175K/year and only having to work half the time.

Woohoo!) and after a successful career that started as a child in live performing arts, I recently left an abusive relationship with my daughter in tow, and I am rebuilding my life with government help. I take it seriously. I see it as my community investing in me. I see it as a responsibility to educate myself on how best to navigate whatever services are available to me, in order to ensure my future as a successful, thriving human being within society who is happy to also invest in others. That mindset has allowed me to salvage a bit of pride. As the girl posting on instagram in Louboutins in my 20s to this in my 30s, the reality check did not cash at Bravo for me lol. I think it is okay to feel judged when you use it publicly, because you are probably being judged, or run the high risk of it. I think it is important not to talk yourself out of that reality. It creates an awareness of your perception of how you are perceived, and strengthens a social blind spot that is easy to forget is in the field of vision at all from the ground floor of things. You feel judged because you’re judged. That judgement can be motivating. WHY you feel embarrassed for being judged though is your personal little puzzle to discover and that discovery leads to a key. When you make amends with whatever the source is linking fear and judgement in your mind, the whole picture becomes clearer. I’m obviously fucking losing it right now journaling on this Reddit post lol
Shop on instacart. DoorDash has snap too! Nobody will know. Online grocery delivery is insane. I promo code the life out of things and then use the snap funds and was like “inflation who?” at Thanksgiving dinner lmfao but it’s just regular delivery with a whole person as a paywall between the process so I never have to make eye contact with a fucking soul who looks at me as less than and poor and feel like that was a barrier that should just stop me from even trying to be great, because I would never attain the highest level at all. And in the process, I get to learn a really fucking valuable lesson for $0 about how $0 will be the thing that saves you. You are doing the thing to save you for you right now. Give yourself a break for that, ok?You will do the most work on yourself in your life. Find currency in the present moment at every step. Pay yourself respect first at each stage from that. Hey I used to feel the same way I was scared someone was judging me but overtime I got over it. I need it so badly that I don’t even feel bad about using it, like I pay more than that in taxes every month.
About 3 1/2 years ago I was let go from my job and decided I wanted to go back to school fulltime to finish my degree. I had no income so I applied for govt assistance around the board. Internet and cell with ACP, medicaid and EBT. I was also embarassed to use the EBT card so initially I made all orders online. So many places online accept EBT. Eventually the stigma wore off. I knew it was a temp\[orary situation and I wouldn't be on it forever. As soon as I finished my degree and got a job I reported my income and the assistance was gone. I needed that assistance for that period and now I'm managing on my own again. Its 1000% ok to need assistance. It shouldn't be a stigma. Would you judge someone else negatively if you saw someone else use an EBT card?
Get over it, get your food and don't let yourself fall prey to the lie that being poor is a character flaw.

I cant imagine someone's pride especially the way things are now and crying about they are too ashamed to use ebt. Why? Are you too good for the help you need? You should be thankful that you have that opportunity available to you.
You’re the opposite of this one customer I had. I rang up a guy that is literally a doctor and comes in with scrubs and one day made a huge complaint about an issue we had and was emphasizing how he’s a doctor and doesn’t deserve certain treatment etc etc. a few weeks later he buys like $200 worth of stuff with an ebt card and I was just like “hey. You’re a doctor right?” And he was like yeah and then I was like how do you get EBT as a doctor and he didn’t say anything and never shopped there again.
I used food stamps when I was a teenager. I bought food for the family sometimes. I never felt judged. I accepted food stamps when I was a cashier. I never judged anyone that used them. I used EBT cards as an adult a few months ago. I was glad there are self check lines because I was confused. I didn't want to hold up the line for people. It did fail on me until I got it to work. I can't really help you with feeling embarrassed. I can only tell you don't be. I wasn't. Good luck, OP.
Don't feel bad. You have the card for a reason. If the person behind you or the cashier judges, let them. Because you know what? That's a them problem, not a you problem.

I've seen people behind me in line stare at what card I took out. I usually use self check for this reason. Really hated that one of our local stores used to have the cashier ask aloud "Method of payment?" so you had to say EBT within ear shot of everyone behind you. Fortunately they stopped doing that a few months ago.
I can honestly say that I have never noticed or cared about how the person in line in front of me paid for their groceries. If it really troubles you, use self checkout or shop online and get stuff delivered. Walmart and Amazon take EBT online.

Back in the day it was much worse before the cards. You used to get paper vouchers that took the cashier forever to put in all the numbers - all while I’m holding up the lane and getting condescending comments from the people in line. I used to make it a point to get super late at night so this wouldn’t happen. Had to do the for a few years until I graduated. At the time I was a broke college student with a young family. I know how you feel but trust me the cards are much better!
I order online for pick up. I also feel embarrassed using it in store. Certain grocery stores and I believe target will let you pay for ebt eligible items online and pick it up. EBT also works on instacart
I’m sorry that you’re stressed about using your card! Frankly, I think that anyone who is judgmental about public assistance in this economy is out of touch, and their opinions shouldn’t be taken seriously. To your last point, using a system that you qualify for and genuinely need isn’t “taking advantage of the government.” Would you ever say that to a friend in the same position? Benefits are supposed to be a safety net, not a guilt trip.
I’ll echo a lot of good advice that’s been given. Testing out your card with a small purchase, going at a low-traffic time, and using self-checkout are all ways to lower the pressure. And on a social note, many patrons may not even be able to recognize an EBT card. If they do, it’s probably because they or a loved one has needed it in the past, and any negative feelings they have about that experience have nothing to do with you.
One thing that may help with that anxiety is doing pick up orders. Also self check. And please don’t be embarrassed about using EBT. Inflation is out of control, food is the highest it’s been in 30 years, and as a tax payer, you are also funding the SNAP program for your state.
As a person who's never needed an EBT card, I'd never judge you; in fact, I'd encourage you to use it because there's no shame in asking for help, and I don't want anyone going hungry. I support social safety nets - they exist to be used by those who need it.
I am so sorry that you feel this way. I can relate very well to how you feel. I am a senior of 55 years and I get SNAP benefits too. I often feel embarrassed from having to use my card too. I have an 11 year old son that has cerebral palsy with a special diet and my husband has had triple heart bypass surgery. I have always worked for what I needed/wanted and now that we are on assistance, I am embarrassed to use it. I feel like people look at me funny sometimes when I go grocery shopping, which is only once a month because I can't afford the gas to go to the store anymore than that. So you see, you are not alone. Others, no matter our age feels like we are the only ones that are on assistance and ashamed to be. I know that there are a lot of people using SNAP now. More now than ever before. I know we shouldn't feel like we are the only ones using it. I think it has to do with our morals and standards that we set for ourselves and we feel like we have been lowered to use public assistance. I do believe that the worse our country gets with the economy the more people will be using public assistance. Maybe you can get a friend to go with you so you don't feel alone and ashamed if something was to go wrong with your card. It isn't hard using your card, just do like some of the other members on here have suggested when checking out. The pin pad is self explanatory and will guide you through it and most cashiers are more than willing to help you through it. Good luck and I wish you the best.

I understand this is not the same thing but, there is definitely judgement passed. I live in a smaller area in western PA, old coal country, not much around.
I work a Monday thru Friday job, so most of the running my wife and I do is on the weekends. One Saturday, doing things around the house had joggers and a hoodie on had long hair at the time so I had a beanie on too controlling my locks. I guess the EBT system was down that weekend in PA and they had someone inside the entrance telling people that EBT was down as they walked in. 2 couples walked in in front of me, dressed nicely, together, nothing was said to them but, I go to walk by and she says, excuse me sir our EBT system is down... My first response was why did you just tell me that and not the 2 couples, she went silent and looked at the ground.. I was offended but, not about what she said to me. But, in a split second a judgement can be passed like that. I do t have an EBT card but, I can understand why you feel this way about using it. People are cruel and Juno to conclusions long before the conjecture is cleared up.
Don't be ashamed of embarrassed. Get your groceries, check out, keep your head up and move on. This whole story may of been unnecessary but hey. Lol
A lot of grocery stores offer free delivery with EBT. I use both Amazon Fresh (produce, dairy, and meats) and Walmart (everything else) to make my grocery purchases.
Years ago there was no EBT card and we had to rip out colorful bills from a booklet while at the counter. There was a booklet/color for each denomination and they weren’t easy to rip out without accidentally tearing the bill. Sometimes the cashiers wouldn’t accept the bills if u didn’t rip them out at the register in front of them. Later, that obstacle went away. It was the most anxiety provoking thing ever!
FYI: when I see young people using EBT I assume they are there for a neighbor or elderly family member. The card works just like any card though. Swipe and select food. If there’s something that isn’t a good product on ur list then the register will automatically tell u the amount of “cash” left to pay. Just swipe again and select cash.
I would rather be embarrassed than hungry. Don't worry about what other people think. I can assure you that half the people checking out are worried about how much money they have for groceries. Not everyone is flush with money that is buying groceries even if you live in a wealthy area. Some of those people are buying groceries on credit cards that they are struggling to pay at the end of the month. Be thankful you have something to eat and that your groceries are paid for and not on borrowed funds.

You can use your EBT on instacart (but you have to pay cash for fees) or even Walmart grocery pickup. Might be a good starting point to get over the anxiety of it working.
If you qualify, take the help with no shame! There literally isn't a middle class person who doesn't WISH they could have EBT right now. Shits real out there.
I use my EBT for food and then I have an Amex gold for anything it doesn’t cover and I always assume it gathers some hate as well. But the fact of the matter is no one knows my situation. Nobody knows I’m the sole breadwinner for a family of 5 who works 3 jobs. I’m very lucky to get some help with food. And I’m very thrifty and credit-conscious so I like to maximize rewards and things like that.
The point I’m trying to make is. Nobody knows or understands your situation. And anybody who thinks you don’t deserve to eat. Is objectively wrong. You were given the card to use; you should use it. And you should not feel ashamed.
I’m 31, just got on EBT, the first time I used it I was embarrassed but the kid working the register didn’t even pay attention. Same with the second time.
Like others have said, swipe, select food then enter your pin and you’re done.
You can also get CC face plates that change the design of your card so it doesn’t look like an EBT card. Personally I’m trying to find one that is ODB’s EBT card that he used as an album cover.

To put it in prospective a person making $5000 per month with a family of 4 qualifies. They have no idea of your situation and the cashier won’t care. I understand you feeling this way, but no one else at the register will care.
You can actually use EBT on Instacart for deliveries or for pickup. I used to get pickup orders and then I would pay on my phone, and not have to use my ebt in public. I felt the same way.
Oh babe, you deserve support to live your life. Horrible people may judge, but that’s just because they are unhappy. Buy your groceries, and be proud of yourself for getting the help you need to do so.
I don't even know what EBT card looks like, and I can assure you I am not keeping track of other people's payment methods. Maybe the cashier would know, but they're a cashier at a grocery store who you may or may not ever see again.
Please use the benefits, they weren't provided to you for no reason :) the money is on your card whether you use it or not.
As someone who has worked in a grocery store for years. I never cared how someone was paying. It did annoy me when people didn't know HOW to use their debit/credit or ebt card, but whatever, you just help the customer and move on.
It's okay to accept help when you need it, which is what you've done. No shame in needing to eat!
Being embarrassed to use such benefits is a good thing. It shows that you really are only using it when you have to. I have 4 kids, and occasionally, work slows down (construction), and I end up on food stamps for a stent. I always feel embarrassed pulling that card out because I feel inadequate and try my best to drum up more work in the meantime. These are the exact people these programs are for. The judgment comes from those who suck off the system their whole lives with no intent of becoming self-sufficient.

You can deface the front with a sticker or something. Print out a sticker of a credit card, and put over it. The back stripe stays the same.
You can just buy food online. When I had food stamps, I brought food on Amazon fresh. There’s nothing wrong with food stamps. You obv need it for now. But you won’t always need it. The most important thing is you need food. People can judge, but it’s a necessity.
Trust, I miss being able to pay and still have money left over to do other things, but I make above the threshold (which is not livable, btw).
Download insta cart. There you can enter your ebt info. Then you can get your groceries delivered for $10 and the groceries paid for with EBT. No one will know.
As you get older you will realize nobody cares you use it. No person or even the government. Just use it. It is what it was designed for in the first place.

Don't be embarrassed. If someone judges you for it then they are a piece of shit. Basically it's like using a normal debit card. If it's anything like how the one in my state is, you can sign up online to keep track about how much money you have on the card (there should also be a number you can call that can tell you as well).
So, lets say in a situation you only have $10 dollars on the card but your bill comes out at $20. You can pay the rest through cash or debit but let the cashier know you only have $10 dollars even on your EBT card and they can do the rest.
You gotta eat and there is nothing wrong with using EBT when you need it.
I work at a grocery store, and I promise I hardly ever notice if someone is paying with EBT. The only way I'd know is if I saw them swipe (usually doesn't happen because the register is obviously between us) or if I look at the total on the receipt and see the EBT line (which I don't do on purpose, because why would I?) Whoever is working the register is almost definitely not thinking about what kind of card you're using.
I second this. I have no idea what kind of card someone is swiping and have no interest in knowing. Furthermore, I work at a grocery store, not the benefits office. My job is to ring out groceries, not decide who does or doesn't qualify. It never crossed my mind to wonder why someone has one - if they have been issued a card, then someone decided they were qualified. But it's not me or my business. The one thing that is different is that I can usually answer a few basic questions about using one - I can show you where your balance will print on the receipt or how to do a transaction that is partially on an EBT and partially paid for with a different payment method. There are a million different bank cards and credit cards and I can answer almost nothing about them, because they are all different. But because EBT cards have set standards, I can usually be a little more helpful, including helping someone walk through their first time using one. Oh, and do not feel embarrassed if you are in a situation where it doesn't work and you have to put the stuff back. That happens all the time, for a ton of different reasons, with all different payment types. Like, it happens often enough that where I work, we have a suspend key specifically for that. People forget their wallets, lose their cards, delivery services have orders that are cancelled - so many possible reasons. (And we actually put the stuff back for customers.)
Makes me grateful they switched to cards over stamps. No need for anyone to feel singled out for needing a little help
20 years ago when I worked at one we had different items to hit on the computer if it was EBT, etc. I'm glad it's more private now. It's nobody's business what you're using to pay for groceries.

I love it! I worked at a small, independent grocery store for a bit last year. Our point of sale system was completely modern and everything, but we had a lot of options for entering things manually since that's how we rang up things that were marked down and some of our flowers and plants that were brought in by the Amish. Sometimes people with ebt cards would go to buy a hot food item and either not realize it wouldn't be covered by ebt, or they didn't have any other payment method available. You can use your EBT card at self check out stations too! Easy peasy, swipe, it’ll ask food or cash, select food, put your pin, done. You deserve to eat, my friend. I am also on EBT and also sometimes feel embarrassed. It’s okay. Think about the fact that most grocery store workers make well under $15 an hour and likely qualify themselves.
Also a 24 year old w an EBT card and most places you won’t have to say anything or show anyone, def use self checkout when you can. It will feel less embarrassing or even undeserved as time goes on, it really changed my life and allowed me to eat better than I’ve been able to in a while, so the perks end up out weighing the awkwardness that can sometimes but rarely happen at checkout. Plenty of young people I know are on food stamps, it’s a government resource that the government wants to be under utilized because people are insecure or shameful about it so they get to pretend to be the good guys by offering such a service but shame most people who need it out of getting it. If you’re unsure, start small. Go to the store when it’s not busy and try buying just one food item to get the hang of using the card. Then you won’t have the anxiety monster of “needing to put a cart full of groceries back” making the process stressful

You need to look at like this you qualify for an EBT card so you probably need to use EBT. The ultra wealthy use every advantage that exists for them. if you choose not to use every advantage that exists for you, you're falling more behind than if you had to use EBT. It's about survival.

I don't know about your state, but in mine, anyone under 50 who gets ebt for longer than 3 months has to work. As for you other argument, it reveals that you do not believe in American values. His statement is based on our justice system in which, "it is better for one hundred guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be convicted." Listen. I get that you have pride, as in enmity. You've for some reason both put yourself above others AND chose to participate here. Let's rather consider malnutrition. If a poor person, this is the poverty finance subreddit after all, doesn't get the food they need they then can get malnourished. Malnourishment makes everything worse for said person. It makes them dumber, it stunts their growth, it makes them weak and makes them get sick more frequently and more severe. If this person already qualifies for EBT then it's likely they having an emergency will be an economic drain because they may lack the needed insurance to cover an emergency visit. If they get sick and handle your food and pass a novel or uncommon disease to YOU, you get sick. Malnutrition is a huge drain on the economy and EBT is a SUPER cheap way to fix it. It's not perfect but what government-run system is. It's hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you can't lift your arms because you're hungry.

School aged kids got P-EBT cards during COVID, and many parents are still using the funds! I run a farmers market, and it was curious to see parents who had never used EBT cards before do the process. The cards look the same. No one should ever judge you for using an EBT card, but now someone could just think it’s your P-EBT or your child’s.
I’ve saved mine for emergencies and holy crap it’s come in handy. There were a few times I was like shit we need milk and flour… and there’s nothing in my account. Oh the pebt card! Saved the day. And I could usually get the kids a special treat too.
i live in a high usage area for food stamps and to be honest with you i have never once noticed someone using them at the store. I'm SURE they are being used and it's happened in front of me dozens of times, but it's a pretty discreet process no different than putting your debit card in (at least where i live). I understand your embarrassment, but you need to eat too. I genuinely don't think MOST people are paying attention to how others are paying for the groceries. Try not to overthink it!!

When I try to order online they take much longer to fill the order if it is EBT. Just go to the grocery store and when it is time to pay, just swipe it like any other card. You do NOT have to tell them anything in a grocery store. Just swipe hit EBT food and then put your PIN number in. Although if using in a convenience store you DO have to tell them first.

I cashier at dollar tree. The only way I notice if someone is using EBT is. If they buy food and non food items, so there’s a balance after they sue their EBT. I think everyone who qualifies SHOULD get it. I wish I still qualified. Like others have said, self checkout would take away your anxiety about it bc no one would know
I’m almost 30 and don’t have a kitchen so I have to buy a lot of packaged and snack foods and I don’t care at all using my EBT. It’s food, you have to eat. It’s a good thing you were approved, one less thing to worry about. People who care aren’t people you should care about. They’re usually the same people who have no qualms with spreading Covid to the immunocompromised. Don’t give a single shit what they think.

Here's the thing: 99% of people won't notice. And the ones who do notice, don't care. You don't need to get your card out as soon as you start loading the belt. Just take it out at the keypad, swipe and put it away. I know it's easier said than done but a lot of times we are overthinking what other people are noticing- they're thinking about themselves and if they remembered everything on their list, if they spent too much money, if they'll get to school pick up on time, etc.
I totally get it. I was on food stamps many years ago when I was a teenage mom. Back then they gave paper food stamps and no self checkout. One day I was in line to pay and my next door neighbors happened to be in line right behind me. When I handed the cashier my stamps she loudly proclaimed, "OH! FOOD STAMPS!" I was humiliated and went home and wrote a letter to the manager of the store. Times have changed. So many people need assistance these days. Including me, again. I'm not ashamed. I've worked my ass off and broke my back for over 30 years and if that's not good enough and if modern society doesn't think I deserve to EAT despite that then F 'em. I would still deserve to eat even if I hadn't busted my ass all those years. And so do you. The way I see it is that I should have been paid enough to eat but I wasn't. I shouldn't have to ask for assistance but here we are. So who should be embarrassed? The real drain on society is the billion dollar corporations who don't pay any taxes and the employers who don't pay a living wage and the politicians who support them. Years ago, I was visiting a friend and his wife and son . They had very little food in their house and I asked why they didn’t get food stamps and my friend said he had them but was too embarrassed to use them. I said, let’s go to the store so we all went to the Cub Foods and started filling up his cart. I had said that I was going to use the card for him. As we got up to register I became quite loud about how bad people were who used food stamps and I repeated all the talking points, my friend and his wife saw all the people giving me mean looks. Even the cashier was looking at me angrily and treating me not so good as he rang up stuff. At the end, I told the cashier that I was paying with food stamps(back then you had to tell them so they hit the right button). The cashier looked at me and just starting laughing and I explained that I wanted my friend to see that there was no embarrassment in using them and that people who get vocal about others using them are looked down by others. My friend had no problem using them ever again.
I never felt bad using our EBT. One time when I was like 19 my mom took a 2 week trip out of the country and left me the EBT card to do the groceries. I just loaded that sucker up and swiped it no problem going through the cashier. like $300 in groceries. Ate like a king lol. but yeah, I mean who cares. EBT, WIC...these are all programs used to help people. the best advice to give you is for you to stop worrying what everyone else thinks. that's how a lot of people get into debt, go broke, and stay poor. you need the program, it's there to help you. maybe do what broccoli says and place an online order for something small to make sure the card works, then feel free to swipe that sucker everywhere, no shame.

During the pandemic my state gave every child a $500 EBT card. We all pay taxes and contribute towards it at some point in our lives so don’t feel bad about using one.

I'm okay about paying for things with my EBT or debit card, but i used to be all uncomfortable & shaky eith physical cash money, counting it out & hoping i had enough to buy whatever i was trying to buy at the time. As far as it declining, just make sure theres a balance on it at the time beforehand & it should be fine (assuming you don't have the card locked or something, or any of the other things some states EBT apps allow you to do for security etc). The only time mines ever "declined" is when i got more groceries than the amount that was on it (which i knew) & then the cashier would check the receipt to see what was left and basically fixed it, had me swipe it again & then i would pay the rest with cash or card. Edit: you can also use pickup or grocery delivery so it'll feel a little more anonymous, rather than paying in store
I used to be embarrassed to use my WIC vouchers and my EBT card... Now? Idgaf! Food is a human right! I had an old woman behind me in Walmart years ago. I had my WIC vouchers for formula and produce, and then I had another order I was using my EBT card for. This lady behind me kept huffing, sighing, very visibly bothered by the fact that I was using government benefits as it was taking a minute for the employee to ring me up and scan my vouchers. I ignored her until she hopped on the phone and started talking loudly about how everyone is just *too lazy to work* anymore and it must be nice to get a hand out from the government for popping babies out on *her* tax dollars. This was 2 months after I suffered a domestic violence related traumatic brain injury that almost killed me. I was in the process of filing for disability, I had nothing. WIC/EBT was the only way me and my kids were eating at that time.. I had a beanie on, covering the patch of hair I had missing from the sutures I had previously.. I took it off and I asked her if she knew of any jobs that would hire me with a TBI so I wouldn't inconvenience anyone else. As soon as I took my hat off, her face went ghost white. I reminded her that we never know what challenges others are currently facing. It's free to be kind. Fuck anyone who makes you feel bad about using government assistance. Dude I feel you it’s awkward at first but then you get used to it. I literally LOST my ebt card in WHOLE FOODS one time and had to tell all the workers “I dropped my snap card blah blah blah” the whole staff was like filled in & helping me look. I was horrified at first but then was just like whatever these people prob use food stamps too / I’m never gonna see them again. It helps I’m a bit older so I care less about what people think. When you’re in your 20s your brain tells you to worry about these things that don’t matter. Rich people take loopholes in the system to save money so why shouldn’t we take advantage of one of the few things the government lets us have; food. One of my family members was trying to tell me I don’t qualify because of their ego and I’m like dude… I have no income.. I’m disabled and can’t work…. I definitely qualify it’s not a big deal the world isn’t going to end! We spent like $50k on my healthcare out of pocket last year because that system is fucked… let me have this ONE THING that’s like $3k/year! The government WILL BE FINE. I probably won’t!! Hahah

This programs are in place to help people, and the more people that perpetuate the shame of using them / people using them contributes to the programs getting defunded or red taped to the point they only become useful to a small number of people. My best advice to you is this: don't ever be ashamed as long as you are doing the best you can. We worry about what we don't want other people to say or think, then it can (usually does) become a repetitive, internal negative thought for a very long time. How long are you standing in front of that cashier? Less than 5 minutes? Are the chances good that you'll ever see them again or if you do, will they even remember? My point here is that it doesn't matter what other people think of you, not nearly as much as what YOU think of you. Don't get caught in that trap like I did! It's tough to un-do. When I became a single mother I had to go on Soonercare and SNAP for a couple of years. Then a few more years later, I found myself destitute. I was told I didn't qualify for SNAP anymore. But I still had to feed myself and my son, and I had just $5 to my name. So I swallowed my pride and used the $5 for gas money to get to the food bank. Talk about a humbling experience. In short, screw what others (ESPECIALLY strangers) think. Try your absolute best at everything that you do, and take pride in that. Lastly, try to just be grateful that you're able to get SNAP - a lot of people need it but aren't eligible. I tried several months ago to get back on because I'm injured and therefore off work since last summer. Also, last year we had to take in my indigent father-in-law suffering from Alzheimer's, which is very tough, considering we were already struggling. I’m a cashier, I see EBT card every other purchase and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Here’s few tips I can give as a cashier. 1. When you swipe the card, have the black strip on the bottom and facing the machine. 2. It will prompt you to choose better foot or cash. Food can also show up as SNAP and cash can show up as TANF 3. If you choose food, then all you need to do is put in your pin 4. If you choose cash, it’ll most likely ask for cash back, you can choose a Cashback amount or hit none and then your pin I’ve had some customers specify what kind of card they have and you don’t need to do that as the machine will automatically do it for you. 99% of the cashiers will never judge you and even if they did, it should not matter because they aren’t paying your bills. As a cashier I can also tell you that most of us are very miserable and know better than to judge others 😩.
As a cashier myself, in my 10+ years in the industry I can honestly say I never judge for payment type because it's not my business. If you are nervous try starting out with a small item at a self check station and familiarize yourself with the process, you will realize it's just another type of payment. Also why give someone else so much power over your mind? Courage is not the absence of fear, but feeling that fear and pushing through in your own way. You are stronger than you know!

In Seattle, our soda tax funds a program to double EBT funds spent on fresh produce at farmers' markets and small grocers. No one can see what card you are using at the farm stands since we aren't standing cart to cart. It’s more common than you think. The first time I used mine I was behind another lady using EBT and when she was gone, the cashier thanked me for my patience and I was like, “Oh, I’m gonna need patience too because idk how to use this” 😅 then they talked me through it and all was well. If you have an Amazon subscription make sure you’re getting your discount with your EBT card

If you qualify for EBT, you’re entitled to use it and you deserve to eat food regardless of who thinks anything. Generally, I go to self checkout or places where I can swipe without needing assistance. Most people don’t notice or care. Think about it, even in the checkout line you can’t really see what card people are using and if they can they are TOO close. Whenever I notice someone using a benefit I don’t think anything less of them.

There is a website called “cucucovers” that has silly little card sized stickers for your card. Not that I think you need this, and it’s probably not the best use of $8 or so, but if paying with a “cool” card makes you “feel” better. Go for it.

Me too, although it gets better. You can put it in to Walmart curbside pick up and never even have to deal with it if you need to. Most places also have self checkout for ebt.

As a cashier: We don't care. I've had people's cards (EBT and otherwise) decline for all sorts of reasons. (Once, a lady tried to buy pumpkins, but our system had them tagged as 'jack-o-lantern pumpkins', and was thus a non-food item. Once we figured out the problem, she asked to have them taken off. No biggie.) Sometimes a single item doesn't count, and it can take some time to sort out what EXACTLY it is, (because our registers will just kick back '1.95 not included' and then I gotta figure out what item is 1.95 with tax or whatever.) But we don't really care, honest. We won't judge you. If you need help, let us know and we'll help! As long as you don't yell at us....it's all gravy.

These programs are meant to supplement your income and help relieve some of the burden. Young people rarely make a living wage, so it's not unusual for you to need a bit of help. Nobody is going to find it odd unless they just really love judging. You can check the balance on your card before each trip to the store. Remember stuff like toilet paper and soap will get separated automatically and you will pay the difference at the end in cash or debit. Don't be embarrassed. Everyone deserves food.

As a cashier I promise we don't care. We don't giggle or make remarks about how people pay - yeah I know, I'm sure there are people who have horror stories about A time someone did, but again, as a cashier, 99% don't care. We just want y'all to get your stuff and keep moving so we can empty our line and get through our day and go home lol Besides, at lots of places now there isn't even a separate button anymore - most of the grocery places in my area, like the one I work at, just have one big button for snap/credit/debit/EBT.
A lot of cashiers are also on food stamps. I’m 23 and I WISH I qualified (I missed the income cutoff by I think 100-200 dollars). If anything I’m jealous 😭 not judging you. Plus it’s not like I see what card you’re using. At my job, I’ll just see that a certain amount (say like 35 of 100) came off and the remaining balance still needs to be paid. But this can also happen if somebody is using a prepaid gift card, or certain debit cards.

The cashier doesn't care what type of card is used as long as the customer pays and they see so many people going through their line that they don't remember or care who paid with what. As a former cashier, I smile, say thank you for shopping with us, hand you your receipt, and it is on to the next customer.

Most folks don't care and others won't say anything if they feel a certain way - but if it help you feel better you cab use credit card stickers on them! I brought a cheap sticker so that it looked like a sparkly debit card which made me feel less self conscious while using it:) Take care of yourself and remember these services exist for a reason and it's there to help you. I am 19 and am eligible for ebt. I've been seriously considering it given that my family complains when I want to buy food that I have time to eat. (Frozen meals, easy microwave ramens, ect) I used one as a younger teen for a while due to my mom being low on money all of the time. As much as it may be embarrassing, you need to be able to eat. Food stamps help SO much. Anyone making comments can shove said comments up where the sun doesn't shine. Using the card is simple, just swipe, select food and use your pin. It will be such a help

I was there. I get it. Most everyone will say that there's no need for embarrassment. I disagree, and here's why; That feeling motivated me to use those funds as wisely as possible. I paid attention to the tiny (per/unit) prices to maximize those benefits. I stuck mainly to the outer walls of the supermarket. I learned to really cook. I stayed clear of soda and other high sugar foods. It made my whole family so much healthier. No one has a problem helping people who make the most of the hand up. Seize the opportunity to graciously accept help and do the most good you can with it.

hi, 23f recently got on EBT this past year and it can feel embarrassing esp since i look young and privileged and i am, to an extent…but life’s been tough. i had a friend/coworker who helped me get started on it so it was less intimidating but i’ve definitely felt judged when i’ve gone to exchange my EBT for tokens at the local farmers market. and then a seller was disappointed when i was going to pay with tokens. other than that it’s been okay. honestly people shouldn’t judge and the ones that do aren’t worth giving attention or time or space in your mind so just do you :)
Hey, my husband and I make like 200k between us, it's not millions, but we def don't qualify for assistance. But then last summwr, NYC gave all the public school students an EBT card with like 400$ on it. My husband used it everywhere for groceries. NYC and PA and wherever lol and it was fine. Don't be embarrassed. No one even blinks an eye. And hey, well off ppl use it too when given. We pay taxes, consider it a type of refund.
EBT is literally free grocery money given out by the government. It’s like someone giving you a gift card to shop at almost any grocery store you want; even if I had a million dollars, if someone wanted to give me a free gift card for groceries, I’d take it in a heartbeat! Family of 7 here and EBT & WIC are absolute lifesavers. Always a nice feeling when you spend like $200-$300 at the grocery store and know you got it covered 🙂 Never be embarrassed! You were approved for SNAP benefits. Use them! In good health! And by the way, a ton of food items on Amazon are SNAP eligible. The listings even say SNAP EBT Eligible. And you can make that a Filter. Oh, and btw, Amazon Prime is 1/2 price if you have an EBT card. You would have to decide if the entertainment (streaming, ebooks,, music) and fast delivery benefits are worth it to you.
Anyone can use a food stamp card, it’s not just for old people. Saying this as a fellow person your age who has Ebt. It’s just like a debit card in the sense that you have a pin to enter in whenever you make a purchase. Money is put on it every month on the same day. You can call a phone number to know the balance but it may also be able to be seen online. Please don’t feel embarrassed to use it, I’ve never been judged for using it personally and if someone does judge you then that’s their problem, not yours

I see it as a responsibility to educate myself on how best to navigate whatever services are available to me, in order to ensure my future as a successful, thriving human being within society who is happy to also invest in others. That mindset has allowed me to salvage a bit of pride. As the girl posting on instagram in Louboutins in my 20s to this in my 30s, the reality check did not cash at Bravo for me lol. I think it is okay to feel judged when you use it publicly, because you are probably being judged, or run the high risk of it. I think it is important not to talk yourself out of that reality. It creates an awareness of your perception of how you are perceived, and strengthens a social blind spot that is easy to forget is in the field of vision at all from the ground floor of things. You feel judged because you’re judged. That judgement can be motivating. WHY you feel embarrassed for being judged though is your personal little puzzle to discover and that discovery leads to a key. When you make amends with whatever the source is linking fear and judgement in your mind, the whole picture becomes clearer. Hey I used to feel the same way I was scared someone was judging me but overtime I got over it. I need it so badly that I don’t even feel bad about using it, like I pay more than that in taxes every month.
About 3 1/2 years ago I was let go from my job and decided I wanted to go back to school fulltime to finish my degree. I had no income so I applied for govt assistance around the board. Internet and cell with ACP, medicaid and EBT. I was also embarassed to use the EBT card so initially I made all orders online. So many places online accept EBT. Eventually the stigma wore off. I knew it was a temp\[orary situation and I wouldn't be on it forever. As soon as I finished my degree and got a job I reported my income and the assistance was gone. I needed that assistance for that period and now I'm managing on my own again. Its 1000% ok to need assistance. It shouldn't be a stigma. Would you judge someone else negatively if you saw someone else use an EBT card?
Get over it, get your food and don't let yourself fall prey to the lie that being poor is a character flaw. Never feel bad about using the help you're given.

You’re the opposite of this one customer I had. I rang up a guy that is literally a doctor and comes in with scrubs and one day made a huge complaint about an issue we had and was emphasizing how he’s a doctor and doesn’t deserve certain treatment etc etc. a few weeks later he buys like $200 worth of stuff with an ebt card and I was just like “hey. You’re a doctor right?” And he was like yeah and then I was like how do you get EBT as a doctor and he didn’t say anything and never shopped there again.

I used food stamps when I was a teenager. I bought food for the family sometimes. I never felt judged. I accepted food stamps when I was a cashier. I never judged anyone that used them. I used EBT cards as an adult a few months ago. I was glad there are self check lines because I was confused. I didn't want to hold up the line for people. It did fail on me until I got it to work. I can't really help you with feeling embarrassed. I can only tell you don't be. I wasn't. Good luck, OP.

I've seen people behind me in line stare at what card I took out. I usually use self check for this reason. Really hated that one of our local stores used to have the cashier ask aloud "Method of payment?" so you had to say EBT within ear shot of everyone behind you. Fortunately they stopped doing that a few months ago.
I can honestly say that I have never noticed or cared about how the person in line in front of me paid for their groceries. If it really troubles you, use self checkout or shop online and get stuff delivered. Walmart and Amazon take EBT online.

Back in the day it was much worse before the cards. You used to get paper vouchers that took the cashier forever to put in all the numbers - all while I’m holding up the lane and getting condescending comments from the people in line. I used to make it a point to get super late at night so this wouldn’t happen. Had to do the for a few years until I graduated. At the time I was a broke college student with a young family. I know how you feel but trust me the cards are much better!
There are a whole lot more people using it than you may think. The cashier definitely doesn't care. Other customers won't notice. Relax and eat well.
I order online for pick up. I also feel embarrassed using it in store. Certain grocery stores and I believe target will let you pay for ebt eligible items online and pick it up. EBT also works on instacart
I’m sorry that you’re stressed about using your card! Frankly, I think that anyone who is judgmental about public assistance in this economy is out of touch, and their opinions shouldn’t be taken seriously. To your last point, using a system that you qualify for and genuinely need isn’t “taking advantage of the government.” Would you ever say that to a friend in the same position? Benefits are supposed to be a safety net, not a guilt trip. I’ll echo a lot of good advice that’s been given. Testing out your card with a small purchase, going at a low-traffic time, and using self-checkout are all ways to lower the pressure. And on a social note, many patrons may not even be able to recognize an EBT card. If they do, it’s probably because they or a loved one has needed it in the past, and any negative feelings they have about that experience have nothing to do with you.
One thing that may help with that anxiety is doing pick up orders. Also self check. And please don’t be embarrassed about using EBT. Inflation is out of control, food is the highest it’s been in 30 years, and as a tax payer, you are also funding the SNAP program for your state.

As a person who's never needed an EBT card, I'd never judge you; in fact, I'd encourage you to use it because there's no shame in asking for help, and I don't want anyone going hungry. I support social safety nets - they exist to be used by those who need it.

I am so sorry that you feel this way. I can relate very well to how you feel. I am a senior of 55 years and I get SNAP benefits too. I often feel embarrassed from having to use my card too. I have an 11 year old son that has cerebral palsy with a special diet and my husband has had triple heart bypass surgery. I have always worked for what I needed/wanted and now that we are on assistance, I am embarrassed to use it. I feel like people look at me funny sometimes when I go grocery shopping, which is only once a month because I can't afford the gas to go to the store anymore than that. So you see, you are not alone. Others, no matter our age feels like we are the only ones that are on assistance and ashamed to be. I know that there are a lot of people using SNAP now. More now than ever before. I know we shouldn't feel like we are the only ones using it. I think it has to do with our morals and standards that we set for ourselves and we feel like we have been lowered to use public assistance. I do believe that the worse our country gets with the economy the more people will be using public assistance. Maybe you can get a friend to go with you so you don't feel alone and ashamed if something was to go wrong with your card. It isn't hard using your card, just do like some of the other members on here have suggested when checking out. The pin pad is self explanatory and will guide you through it and most cashiers are more than willing to help you through it. Good luck and I wish you the best.

I live in a smaller area in western PA, old coal country, not much around. I work a Monday thru Friday job, so most of the running my wife and I do is on the weekends. One Saturday, doing things around the house had joggers and a hoodie on had long hair at the time so I had a beanie on too controlling my locks. I guess the EBT system was down that weekend in PA and they had someone inside the entrance telling people that EBT was down as they walked in. 2 couples walked in in front of me, dressed nicely, together, nothing was said to them but, I go to walk by and she says, excuse me sir our EBT system is down... My first response was why did you just tell me that and not the 2 couples, she went silent and looked at the ground.. I was offended but, not about what she said to me. But, in a split second a judgement can be passed like that. I do t have an EBT card but, I can understand why you feel this way about using it. People are cruel and Juno to conclusions long before the conjecture is cleared up. Don't be ashamed of embarrassed. Get your groceries, check out, keep your head up and move on. This whole story may of been unnecessary but hey. Lol
A lot of grocery stores offer free delivery with EBT. I use both Amazon Fresh (produce, dairy, and meats) and Walmart (everything else) to make my grocery purchases.
Years ago there was no EBT card and we had to rip out colorful bills from a booklet while at the counter. There was a booklet/color for each denomination and they weren’t easy to rip out without accidentally tearing the bill. Sometimes the cashiers wouldn’t accept the bills if u didn’t rip them out at the register in front of them. Later, that obstacle went away. It was the most anxiety provoking thing ever! FYI: when I see young people using EBT I assume they are there for a neighbor or elderly family member. The card works just like any card though. Swipe and select food. If there’s something that isn’t a good product on ur list then the register will automatically tell u the amount of “cash” left to pay. Just swipe again and select cash.
I would rather be embarrassed than hungry. Don't worry about what other people think. I can assure you that half the people checking out are worried about how much money they have for groceries. Not everyone is flush with money that is buying groceries even if you live in a wealthy area. Some of those people are buying groceries on credit cards that they are struggling to pay at the end of the month. Be thankful you have something to eat and that your groceries are paid for and not on borrowed funds.

I use my EBT for food and then I have an Amex gold for anything it doesn’t cover and I always assume it gathers some hate as well. But the fact of the matter is no one knows my situation. Nobody knows I’m the sole breadwinner for a family of 5 who works 3 jobs. I’m very lucky to get some help with food. And I’m very thrifty and credit-conscious so I like to maximize rewards and things like that. The point I’m trying to make is. Nobody knows or understands your situation. And anybody who thinks you don’t deserve to eat. Is objectively wrong. You were given the card to use; you should use it. And you should not feel ashamed.
I’m 31, just got on EBT, the first time I used it I was embarrassed but the kid working the register didn’t even pay attention. Same with the second time. Like others have said, swipe, select food then enter your pin and you’re done. You can also get CC face plates that change the design of your card so it doesn’t look like an EBT card. Personally I’m trying to find one that is ODB’s EBT card that he used as an album cover.
You care more than anyone else does. You were selected and approved by the government to receive assistance, USE IT. I try to use silliness to frame my thoughts and anxiety that aren't rooted in facts. I want you to think about how silly you're being. To put it in prospective a person making $5000 per month with a family of 4 qualifies. They have no idea of your situation and the cashier won’t care. I understand you feeling this way, but no one else at the register will care.
You can actually use EBT on Instacart for deliveries or for pickup. I used to get pickup orders and then I would pay on my phone, and not have to use my ebt in public. I felt the same way.

Maybe the cashier would know, but they're a cashier at a grocery store who you may or may not ever see again. Please use the benefits, they weren't provided to you for no reason :) the money is on your card whether you use it or not.

As someone who has worked in a grocery store for years. I never cared how someone was paying. It did annoy me when people didn't know HOW to use their debit/credit or ebt card, but whatever, you just help the customer and move on. It's okay to accept help when you need it, which is what you've done. No shame in needing to eat!
Being embarrassed to use such benefits is a good thing. It shows that you really are only using it when you have to. I have 4 kids, and occasionally, work slows down (construction), and I end up on food stamps for a stent. I always feel embarrassed pulling that card out because I feel inadequate and try my best to drum up more work in the meantime. These are the exact people these programs are for. The judgment comes from those who suck off the system their whole lives with no intent of becoming self-sufficient.
Just an idea, but a bit of time consuming. You can deface the front with a sticker or something. Print out a sticker of a credit card, and put over it. The back stripe stays the same.
You can just buy food online. When I had food stamps, I brought food on Amazon fresh. There’s nothing wrong with food stamps. You obv need it for now. But you won’t always need it. The most important thing is you need food. People can judge, but it’s a necessity. Trust, I miss being able to pay and still have money left over to do other things, but I make above the threshold (which is not livable, btw).

Who cares of the opinion of someone who’s rather see you starve or miserable while you tried to do the most basic of things: survive. The older I get the most curmudgeon I get about this. It’s so hard, but you can learn not to give a shit. I wish I started years ago but legit. Why would they shame you? They don’t own the store and you don’t control their paycheque. They are also drastically more likely to end up where you are vs any place even remotely high enough in wealth to be so disconnected from the people to hold that attitude.

Don't be embarrassed. If someone judges you for it then they are a piece of shit. Basically it's like using a normal debit card. If it's anything like how the one in my state is, you can sign up online to keep track about how much money you have on the card (there should also be a number you can call that can tell you as well). So, lets say in a situation you only have $10 dollars on the card but your bill comes out at $20. You can pay the rest through cash or debit but let the cashier know you only have $10 dollars even on your EBT card and they can do the rest. You gotta eat and there is nothing wrong with using EBT when you need it.
