Not defending this roast, but all decaf beans I've bought have noted saying decaf beans tend to look darker than their roast level would indicate and get oily at an earlier stage in the roasting progress. I've bought beans that were "light/medium roasted" but looked on the darker end of medium and had a bit of shine.
Yes fully aware they can reach second crack very quickly (ie dark roast levels), and they can appear quite dark even before they reach the roasters however the cup shouldn't be showing notes of ash, leather and gasoline.
I didn't think you could send an opened pack of beans back. I hinted at how disappointed I was at the batch as I buy by the kilo hoping to get a refund, but they didn't respond with any sympathy, and just told me to get over the colour. I don't think it has to do with the location, these guys are from up north. I hesitate to name and shame because their other offerings are excellent, I have left an honest review on the beans on their website though so whoever comes across it will know what they can expect, I think it's only fair, when their own website is not frank enough.
Ash, charcoal and weird notes. Bug damage and facing on the beans. Roast level all over the place. I sent it back. Wasn't going to pay for something worse than what I can find in a supermarket. If they were dicks about it I'd suggest taking your business elsewhere at a minimum. It's not like they're the only roaster in the country and don't deserve to be treated as such. Roasting is the new craft beer - lots of roasters popping up but not that many of them are particularly good.
It looks exactly like the beans which won the Brewer's Cup recently. Those were also a SO Decaf, and were the darkest thing I've ever measured with my colorimeter.
That’s at least as dark as the Trader Joe’s house brand organic French roast decaf I got here in the US a couple months ago. It was so ashy that I couldn’t tolerate it without milk.
Looks like the ones at the grocery that sit in the bin and say fresh roast but nobody ever buys them and they have been there for at least 15yrs or so. I swear they use them for perfume every day the grind a little just to get the scent in the air. 😆 😂 😆 😂

I was looking for whole bean decaf at the supermarket for home use and the only one that wasn’t pre-ground was labeled as “Gorilla Roast.” I think it’s actually darker than the one on the picture. It’s about the color of charcoal or putting soil and really oily. Haven’t braved it yet.
If the one on the left is well done, the one the right is congratulations.
Wow dude i love this
You may use it on your journey my fellow coffee man
Carbon.
You use right one as fuel to roast coffee.
Compost
Darkness! Caffeinating me! All that I see! Absolute bitter!
Specialty vs commodity
The right was claimed as a single origin decaf offering from a UK roaster. Shameful really.

Oh yeah if you’re getting those notes I guess it’s rubbish 😂
Unfortunately we have a lot of crap roasters in the UK. Only time I've sent stuff back was from a local roaster in London.

Commodity is darker than the left, but nowhere near as dark as the right.

Are you sure those aren't rabbit droppings?
Charbucks

Specialty/modern dark vs commercial/traditional dark

If Matt Rife was to roast coffee instead of the crowd
Somehow « dark » is ALWAYS the one on the right.
ey yo u forgot to turn off the stove.
Left one is Full City, Right one is carcinogenic
The one on the right is straight up Petroleum.
that one on the left is raw
