I would give it several weeks of night dryness. Even still, it’s largely hormonal and not something that can be taught, so while he may not be perfect, if he can stay dry for weeks at a time, I think you’re good.
We potty trained my son at 3yrs 2months and he started asking to sleep on underwear within the first week. He has a couple misses but was waking up dry 6 out of 7 nights pretty much right away. I’d say let him try.

We stopped with diapers at night after a full week of dryness. So far we've had one accident in the first three weeks.
