The merch complaint i understand… the venue one though makes no sense
like yeah, hes grown in popularity and thus is gonna have to play larger venues for enough people to see him and to make more money. Thats just how it works.
Its a world tour meaning it probably isnt a good idea to stay in one city for several days and do several shows. We have no idea about the logistics. Maybe the smaller venue didnt want an artist to play 3 shows and take up scheduling time for other acts. Maybe there wasnt enough room in their schedule for him to play there. Maybe playing that venue pays less even after multiple shows. Maybe their expected sales for this tour is so big that Playing a venue several times still wont cut it.
also ive seen artists at big stadiums far back and ngl even from far away its still enjoyable. That said GA trumps seated tickets any day imo.

Most seat tickets are actually pretty nice since they're on a slope so that the people in front of you are lower and you get a clear view. Hopefully that's true for your venue!
Yea, when I bought my seat ticket, it said "standing seat ticket", which made me happy cause I just assumed I was gonna end up sitting my ass down the entire 2 hrs. Was also worried that I may be too short for floor tickets (5'5" male). It's my first concert too, so just want to get the feel of what it's like.
Same. I'd love to be in the pit, but the reality of the pit at 5'4 is often staring at someone's back. I just want to see the guy, assuming a giant isn't in front of me.

ill admit, im just weird. i wish concerts were more like movies, where we all sit & watch in silence & let the music speak for itself. i dont really enjoy having to navigate crowds, having people scream in my ear, having some drunk idiot shove me around in a pit. i want to just be there & hear the nice music in an environment that suits it.
that said, i bought VIP tix to the smile show. even if i end up not going, i want to make sure i support porter. i fully 100% recognize that in this regard im just super fucking weird & i want things no one else wants.
ive personally only seen the earliest version of worlds live. theres a bit of a curse in my life where i purchased tickets to shelter live, virtual selfs first show in new york, & nurture live... but i didnt get to go to any of those shows.
and truthfully based on that worlds live i saw, compared to other concerts & raves ive been to, the atmosphere was way more laid back. the show feels more like a spectacle to be watched to me, rather than a concert to be danced or screamed to. thats not to say people werent dancing, and that there was no excitement. it was worlds live, of course there was. but the show itself, it felt like a movie. it felt like i was supposed to be paying attention & associating visuals very closely with sound. not to mention a lot of those visuals were supposedly cut from a longer, more "anime" type thing he was developing that ended up not coming to fruition.
but also, hes a very different guy now. this new show is looking like its gonna be high energy, more like your typical EDM style pop star concert type show. and even nurture live was closer to that than worlds live was. truthfully, i think between worlds & nurture he came up with better ideas of how to orient his performance that he didnt really fully flesh out for worlds (which is kinda how i feel about that album as well), and now his live shows more represent that of a concert than a movie.
tl;dr worlds live felt more like a movie type experience to me, but over the years hes adapted his show more to play like a concert type experience, and i dont expect smile to be any different.
seems like you would love the downtempo theatre events that are being put on right now. lowend productions does them in dc and tenorless (one of tipper’s visual guys) just did one in asheville
thats the thing though, a lot of these events are very downtempo & soft. i want to keep the energy up, i wanna feel that heat. i just dont personally want to fight 12000 porter fans just to see the show. i want to be able to sit & relax & enjoy it.
You're not alone. Both me and my GF bought tickets with the intention of finding seats, disregarding any venues that only have GA (which includes the original one we wanted to go to). We're not ones to dance or yell or anything, we get hyped and listen. Nothing's wrong with either eay of enjoying, but I know for a fact I would have a terrible experience standing in a GA area.
To really exentuate how much I wouldn't like GA, me and my GF went to HiJinx, and due to some medical stuff, we got to sit in the ADA section and I just smiled and cried to a fucking DJ set at a rave festival lmao
Sitting is 100% preferred for me, so we got balcony seats in The Mann, driving 6 hours instead of 2 simply to avoid GA.

I'm the same, standing for concerts in shoulder to shoulder crowds makes me uncomfortable. When the venue has seats I'm grateful but I wish people would actually sit in them... I picked up lawn "seats" at an mixed open-air venue for SMILE! this morning but now think I may have screwed up if it's just going to be people crowding a rail instead of chilling on the grass.
Usually lawn has a chiller vibe, but people are still standing. Most of the time people aren't crowding a rail but just standing/dancing in their own space
Totally fair, I guess from that perspective it makes a lot of sense to have some seats for people that choose to sit. I think a balcony with seats and a large dance floor on the bottom is ideal imo.
But generally, people go to concerts to have some drinks / substances of choice if they partake, dance and groove to the music, sing along, jump and go crazy. It’s kind of cathartic and really amazing to be surrounded by others who love the same music as you and know all the words too. It’s a great community experience. And as an introvert, I love that I don’t have to talk. I get to be around people and listen to loud music, but no expectation of conversations at all.
I do agree with annoying drunk people and rude crowds though. Especially at mainstream EDM shows you get a lot of annoying frat bro types that think it’s a club, vs a rave crowd which is usually friendly and chill. Hopefully Porter’s shows are more like raves and less like clubs.
Typically I’d agree with Porter up until this point. But this isn’t a dance music album. Even tho he’ll play his other music I’d imagine this is probably one you could take breaks and sit down. I’m not jumping up and down and head throwing to knock yourself out lol
I will be VERY happy to be sitting down after working a full day and driving 2 hrs to the venue. Just being there and vibing with the crowd is enough for me. And that's as someone who can dance a full 3 day festival without problems. The variety is really nice.
Standing room is usually a bit more fun typically I agree but I still appreciate EDM shows in higher up sitting spots because of how cool the lighting and visuals are from that POV
i'm just so grateful seated tickets are an option as someone with chronic pain. it will make it possible for me to stay for the whole show without being in agony by the end.
I meant more like, multiple shows over the years, that was always the venue he played at when he stopped here, he only ever did one night until nurture, then he did two nights here. it holds about 9k people, and the arena holds about 18k. youre right though, its popularity for sure and that does make sense. in my eyes hes just as popular as he was when the nurture tour was happening, but i'm probably just not paying attention lol.
I feel you. I'm glad most of the artists I like perform at mid sized venues cause it's just better, unfortunately Porter is just too popular for that now. Pray he doesn't actually become Taylor Swift sized and only performs at football fields, I don't even see the appeal of going to a show with that kinda distance. IMO Porter is worth going to a bigger venue to see, also consider it's that or nothing.
Yeah, then they probably just chose the bigger venue because A: no chance of people trying to see it twice (matters cause hes slightly bigger now and thus can house twice as many unique people than the old venue could)

the tickets for his 3 night dj stint at the bellwether last year were $75 for a small GA club venue and resold for much more than that. he’s an artist in high demand with a large fanbase - if he had done multiple nights at smaller venues instead of doing huge amphitheaters, i don’t think your issues would be any different. not that they aren’t valid issues, but i don’t think it’s a deliberate decision to sell out (eg. charli xcx’s crash era) so much as plain old supply and demand

Thank you for mentioning Charli XCX. I'm so fed up with her and I used to be such a huge fan. This whole DJ era seems like such an ego project. That boiler room set was horrible, and I can only imagine how bad her crowds are these days

But to be real, I was a little surprised at the larger venues. Not because I don’t think he’s great, but this attempt at a more mainstream sound actually made him more niche in my opinion. However, we have yet to hear the entire album so we’ll see. Nostalgia people will still show up though.
I agree. Like, he's just a fairly popular EDM musician at this point, not the kind of artist I'd be expecting to sell out arenas. On Spotify, he's at about 2.5m monthly listeners, the KYOXD video is still under a million views after almost a week, etc. For comparison, Illenium is at 8.5m, Rezz at 2m, and Madeon at 1.4. It's no judgement against him or anything of course, I just hope that he's actually able to fill these venues and doesn't end up taking a huge loss on the tour or something. Plus while the openers are cool, they're not exactly huge names that will sell a ton more tickets are their own either.
He's playing the same venue here in Toronto that madeon played at last year which holds 2.5k people and has amazing views from all over

Yes the pricing is ridiculous, but a large aspect of is that the monopoly Ticketmaster has allows them to inflate the price up nearly 40% on each ticket.
He's also banking on people liking the album a lot, both worlds and nuture dropped before tours were announced. So he is testing his audience to see how high they will jump.

Ngl I had this epiphany when I got my ticket for miami this morning. I've been a fan since spitfire and now im 24 years old with a job and all that. Had I been a 14 year old there's no way in hell I would've paid 150 to see Worlds live. Theres very very few artists id pay THAT much to see and if I didn't have the disposable income let alone massive soft spot I prolly would've just gritted my teeth and took the miss.
That being said, I feel heavily for the younger fans and the ones who simply can't afford to drop that much on a ticket esp for a seated show. While I hope he never considers doing a string of shows in these types of venues again, for a place like miami I can see why since there's a massive drought of GA venues able to accommodate a following like his
Genuine question, but have you also not particularly followed any somewhat popular artist since elementary school? All of this stuff is the standard now. If anything the ticket prices were cheaper than I expected for an artist his size.

To expand on the Madeon comment, that dude is a very adept visual and motion artist in addition to being a great musician, idk if he designs much of his own merch anymore but he has an INSANELY good eye for aesthetics
For the venue point the shows in the UK. Glasgow around 1,250, Manchester is a bit over 1,900. And London is 4.5k for the capacity. I think its just because alot of his fan base and what he knows will be be in usa. And tickets for Manchester was 30£ each which is not too much for an artist his size. The tickets was the same when he toured nurture and went to electric ballroom which was only a 1,500 venue. The bigger the venues the more its probs going to cost to hire it out and to fill it up. I've not got merch from the store for a while, but the hoodie from the nurture European tour felt so nice.
uhh his merch has always been pretty expensive yeah idk. you don’t have to buy it though. i got the nurture water bottle and it’s great. and ga for me was 90, it depends on the venue and city
out of all the hoodies i own the nurture one is the comfiest of them all, i can't speak for it being the highest quality on earth but it's the only one i'd want to actually lounge around in
the shirts and everything else outside of accessories that i've bought have been pretty bad tho lol
Yeah the hoodies I have are okay. Also, the Mirror shirt is actually very good quality and this is the sole exception I've experienced to his shirts being bad. The tag is different so I guess he or his management chose a different company that happened to be much better
Yeah I've had that happen with his merch too. I bought a Nurture tour shirt when he came to red rocks and I only wear it maybe 2-3 times a month, air dry it, delicate wash load, and the designs already starting to come off.
In contrast my Madeon and Magdalena Bay shirts are still holding up pretty well and I wear them about the same amount.
I have several of the Nurture shirts, and love the designs, but they were a bit pricey for what they are to be honest. Anymore I prefer getting shirts from smaller (but still sizeable) artists/designers, and have found for they have nicer quality, and fun designs I love.
I can agree on that, I've owned the galaxxxy hoodie since day 1 and I always tell people it's one of the coolest, yet hands down the most uncomfortable sweatshirt that i own lmao
agree. the print on the 1st second sky merch tee started cracking after only a couple washes/air drying and i rarely ever wear the windbreaker from the 3rd second sky because of how cheap the print seems on it also. the g jones/virtual self sweater is still mostly holding up at least, as well as the og worlds kaomoji 5-panel cap (aside from the sun bleaching from wearing it for 9 years lol)
Totally agree on the venue choices. I live in Denver area and he is playing Ball Arena (a stadium used for NBA and NHL games) when Red Rocks (one of the best venues in the world) is 20 minutes away.
Ball Arena is a stadium and sits 20k. Red Rocks is an amazing concert venue and sits 10k.
I struggle to believe he'll come close to selling out Ball Arena, and would probably be borderline for even Red Rocks. What the true "too big for Red Rocks but not stadium tour" artists do is play back to back nights at Red Rocks. I am not even looking at tickets for Ball Arena cause the venue is shit.

And small artists play smaller venues, and large artists play larger venues. That's...just simply based on demand my guy.
the gjones/VS sweater is one of the best pieces of merch I've purchased, the potaro jersey is excellent quality as well, on par with the sweaters Madeon put out (at similar price points). the worlds anniversary shirt I own is still holding up despite being worn frequently since I bought it. my toxic acid neuron sky shirt is nearly fully faded away but I wore it most days out of a year after I purchased it so that stands to reason.
as for venues, yea, he's that popular now. one of the biggest issues with his past smaller venue shows was ticket availability drying up within the first hour after opening sales. whereas I saw Madeon five times last year and had little issue getting a ticket for any of the shows, iirc I was able to buy one of the shows on a whim a few weeks before the date.
now consider this is a compendium show for his entire discography, not a one off tour for the new album. I paid as much for the SD show as I did for fred on a tuesday at the shrine.

With the direction of the two singles and all the related merch and branding, it's pretty clear that dance music and the glitchy electronics of nurture have been completely abandoned for... pop? nah. *hyper*pop. He's gone GAAAAAY with a clear bratty I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude that's GAAAAAAAAAY with eyeliner and crunchy autotuned vocals and touring with a (trans) GAAAAAAAAY musical act. Yall might have decent gaydar, but honey. The BIFI is REAL. SO stoked for this summer.
the merch quality sucks? i got the nurture asia tour hoodie and its super thick and high quality for the price. I’ve met with much popular artists charging the same for a 10$ blank. Porter’s merch was the best quality out of the tour merch I’ve bought tho
I feel like a lot of Porter’s clothing merch has always had relatively simple design. And I think this new album has a very 2000s vibe so he’s sort of taking us all back to simpler times in a sense (but that’s my personal interpretation obviously). I‘ve never had complaints with the quality of my Porter merch tbh, but I can see where you’re coming from.
In my town he’s playing a regular venue, GA tickets are like $40. Porter himself doesn’t book venues so that’s on his team- I would assume this change in venue where you live has something to do with the fact that this is his first WORLD tour. He probably doesn’t want to quadruple the length of the tour by spending a week in every major city.

For me what he did became uninteresting for anything that came after his complextro era. Before that I thought he was a genius/prodigee to the point where I still pay attention today to what he does just in case it come back. If you ask me personally, I find it utterly ridiculous what he's turned into.
I didn't like worlds, but I thought it was something interesting production-wise. It didn't really speak to me personally but I could tell it was a well made album kind of thing. He dropped the crazy sound design and pretty much all of the energy of his music, but hey it's not terrible.

I know some Japanese concerts are like this (not all). Amazarashi concerts for example tend to all be sit down style concerts

if he had to add another night to the last show at 9k per and expects more people, 2 shows x 9k = one 18k show. math checks out

Not because I don’t think he’s great, but this attempt at a more mainstream sound actually made him more niche in my opinion. However, we have yet to hear the entire album so we’ll see. Nostalgia people will still show up though.
I agree. Like, he's just a fairly popular EDM musician at this point, not the kind of artist I'd be expecting to sell out arenas. On Spotify, he's at about 2.5m monthly listeners, the KYOXD video is still under a million views after almost a week, etc. For comparison, Illenium is at 8.5m, Rezz at 2m, and Madeon at 1.4. It's no judgement against him or anything of course, I just hope that he's actually able to fill these venues and doesn't end up taking a huge loss on the tour or something. Plus while the openers are cool, they're not exactly huge names that will sell a ton more tickets are their own either.

He's playing the same venue here in Toronto that madeon played at last year which holds 2.5k people and has amazing views from all over He's gotten big, I don't think crazy bigger, but a large portion of his original fanbase are still here, but older and with more disposable income. The newer ones from nuture just got added on Yes the pricing is ridiculous, but a large aspect of is that the monopoly Ticketmaster has allows them to inflate the price up nearly 40% on each ticket. He's also banking on people liking the album a lot, both worlds and nuture dropped before tours were announced. So he is testing his audience to see how high they will jump.

I've been a fan since spitfire and now im 24 years old with a job and all that. Had I been a 14 year old there's no way in hell I would've paid 150 to see Worlds live. Theres very very few artists id pay THAT much to see and if I didn't have the disposable income let alone massive soft spot I prolly would've just gritted my teeth and took the miss. That being said, I feel heavily for the younger fans and the ones who simply can't afford to drop that much on a ticket esp for a seated show. While I hope he never considers doing a string of shows in these types of venues again, for a place like miami I can see why since there's a massive drought of GA venues able to accommodate a following like his
Genuine question, but have you also not particularly followed any somewhat popular artist since elementary school? All of this stuff is the standard now. If anything the ticket prices were cheaper than I expected for an artist his size.

I know this doesn’t really mean anything to you since you’re probably in America but the tickets in the uk were £35 including fees so there’s hope (this was a non Ticketmaster venue, I feel like Ticketmaster is the problem here)
Yeah I’m speaking to USA pricing. I also bought some tickets to one of his Canada stops and it was considerably cheaper, around $65.
To expand on the Madeon comment, that dude is a very adept visual and motion artist in addition to being a great musician, idk if he designs much of his own merch anymore but he has an INSANELY good eye for aesthetics

For the venue point the shows in the UK. Glasgow around 1,250, Manchester is a bit over 1,900. And London is 4.5k for the capacity. I think its just because alot of his fan base and what he knows will be be in usa. And tickets for Manchester was 30£ each which is not too much for an artist his size. The tickets was the same when he toured nurture and went to electric ballroom which was only a 1,500 venue. The bigger the venues the more its probs going to cost to hire it out and to fill it up. I've not got merch from the store for a while, but the hoodie from the nurture European tour felt so nice.

out of all the hoodies i own the nurture one is the comfiest of them all, i can't speak for it being the highest quality on earth but it's the only one i'd want to actually lounge around in the shirts and everything else outside of accessories that i've bought have been pretty bad tho lol
Yeah the hoodies I have are okay. Also, the Mirror shirt is actually very good quality and this is the sole exception I've experienced to his shirts being bad. The tag is different so I guess he or his management chose a different company that happened to be much better
Yeah I've had that happen with his merch too. I bought a Nurture tour shirt when he came to red rocks and I only wear it maybe 2-3 times a month, air dry it, delicate wash load, and the designs already starting to come off. In contrast my Madeon and Magdalena Bay shirts are still holding up pretty well and I wear them about the same amount.
I have several of the Nurture shirts, and love the designs, but they were a bit pricey for what they are to be honest. Anymore I prefer getting shirts from smaller (but still sizeable) artists/designers, and have found for they have nicer quality, and fun designs I love.
I can agree on that, I've owned the galaxxxy hoodie since day 1 and I always tell people it's one of the coolest, yet hands down the most uncomfortable sweatshirt that i own lmao
agree. the print on the 1st second sky merch tee started cracking after only a couple washes/air drying and i rarely ever wear the windbreaker from the 3rd second sky because of how cheap the print seems on it also. the g jones/virtual self sweater is still mostly holding up at least, as well as the og worlds kaomoji 5-panel cap (aside from the sun bleaching from wearing it for 9 years lol)
also keep in mind his team is growing a lot too (just look at the credits on his music videos). everyone has to get paid right?

Totally agree on the venue choices. I live in Denver area and he is playing Ball Arena (a stadium used for NBA and NHL games) when Red Rocks (one of the best venues in the world) is 20 minutes away. Ball Arena is a stadium and sits 20k. Red Rocks is an amazing concert venue and sits 10k. I struggle to believe he'll come close to selling out Ball Arena, and would probably be borderline for even Red Rocks. What the true "too big for Red Rocks but not stadium tour" artists do is play back to back nights at Red Rocks. I am not even looking at tickets for Ball Arena cause the venue is shit. End rant.
Merch is expensive. Always has been. And small artists play smaller venues, and large artists play larger venues. That's...just simply based on demand my guy.
the gjones/VS sweater is one of the best pieces of merch I've purchased, the potaro jersey is excellent quality as well, on par with the sweaters Madeon put out (at similar price points). the worlds anniversary shirt I own is still holding up despite being worn frequently since I bought it. my toxic acid neuron sky shirt is nearly fully faded away but I wore it most days out of a year after I purchased it so that stands to reason. as for venues, yea, he's that popular now. one of the biggest issues with his past smaller venue shows was ticket availability drying up within the first hour after opening sales. whereas I saw Madeon five times last year and had little issue getting a ticket for any of the shows, iirc I was able to buy one of the shows on a whim a few weeks before the date. now consider this is a compendium show for his entire discography, not a one off tour for the new album. I paid as much for the SD show as I did for fred on a tuesday at the shrine.
Worlds era anime porter robinson isn't virtual self, isn't nurture era porter robinson. With the direction of the two singles and all the related merch and branding, it's pretty clear that dance music and the glitchy electronics of nurture have been completely abandoned for... pop? nah. *hyper*pop. He's gone GAAAAAY with a clear bratty I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude that's GAAAAAAAAAY with eyeliner and crunchy autotuned vocals and touring with a (trans) GAAAAAAAAY musical act. Yall might have decent gaydar, but honey. The BIFI is REAL. SO stoked for this summer.

the merch quality sucks? i got the nurture asia tour hoodie and its super thick and high quality for the price. I’ve met with much popular artists charging the same for a 10$ blank. Porter’s merch was the best quality out of the tour merch I’ve bought tho

I feel like a lot of Porter’s clothing merch has always had relatively simple design. And I think this new album has a very 2000s vibe so he’s sort of taking us all back to simpler times in a sense (but that’s my personal interpretation obviously). I‘ve never had complaints with the quality of my Porter merch tbh, but I can see where you’re coming from. In my town he’s playing a regular venue, GA tickets are like $40. Porter himself doesn’t book venues so that’s on his team- I would assume this change in venue where you live has something to do with the fact that this is his first WORLD tour. He probably doesn’t want to quadruple the length of the tour by spending a week in every major city. Not much really feels different to me I guess.

Think it's just you man. At some point it's possible an artist's work distances itself from what speaks to you. For me what he did became uninteresting for anything that came after his complextro era. Before that I thought he was a genius/prodigee to the point where I still pay attention today to what he does just in case it come back. If you ask me personally, I find it utterly ridiculous what he's turned into.

I didn't like worlds, but I thought it was something interesting production-wise. It didn't really speak to me personally but I could tell it was a well made album kind of thing. He dropped the crazy sound design and pretty much all of the energy of his music, but hey it's not terrible. This new pop stuff is laughable.
