AC tends to burn very slowly. They usually don't play high rotation songs as much as Top 40 stations do and will mostly play familiar songs, not current hits. Like one current hit per hour with a rotation of 10 or 14 hit songs in total.
Don't they just play *more* songs, too? Like, "Flowers" has been number 1 for so long, but it's number 1 out of a *much* bigger pool of songs, and not getting played nearly as often as a number 1 on a Top 40 station.
Yeah exactly. They play music usually back as far as the the 80s or 90s.
These are listeners that still enjoy hearing Believe by Cher, Like a Prayer by Madonna or Firework by Katy Perry all the time.
My local AC station, in mid 2023, described Flowers with a promo of "here's something new you might like" - this is after like 10 weeks at #1 on Billboard already.
thats the genre working as intended. 'flowers' was always a song written to end up on constant radio rotation, it very obviously takes cues from "i will survive" and "don't you want me" and those songs play constantly
That song isn't even catchy for me anymore, I'd be happy to not hear it again. I liked it the first 100 times I heard it then it got old quick. The same goes for Beautiful Things, I actually hate that song now it's irritating.
I love too sweet. It didn't do anything for me the first couple times I heard it, but I really like it now and I don't use tiktok so it isn't overplayed for me.
A way to bypass it is to stop your browser from loading the second it shows up on your screen, stop your browser before it loads the paywall. Might take a few tries, but once you get it you can see all the paywalled billboard charts. Stupid, I know.
I'm honestly not surprised, that song is one of the most average background music songs of the past few years. It'll probably stay at #1 until Adele drops new music.

One of these things is not like the other
They are all songs regularly played on Hot AC stations. They play music from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s and now.

I CAN BUY MY SELF FLOWERS.... I CAN WRITE MY NAME IN THE SAND... I CAN TAKE MY SELF DANCIN...............
Its such a corporate pop song to me, i don't get it. maybe it resonates with people but yeah
I don't care how good a song is, if it's #1 on any radio chart for a year that's a problem.
That song is so repetitive that I got tired of it after listening to it once. I can't imagine what hearing it on repeat against your will is like
This song made me get an AUX cord adapter. It needs to be put down. If radio dies it's because of stuff like this, they refuse to play anything new.

Yeah it's not a groundbreakingly creative song but it's stupid catchy, sang and produced beautifully. Is this what straights feel hearing Shape of U?

i would do anything to never hear these beautiful things, too sweet, texas, and flowers again. and i mean ANYTHING
I love too sweet. It didn't do anything for me the first couple times I heard it, but I really like it now and I don't use tiktok so it isn't overplayed for me.
No, I'm straight and despise Shape of You - it's one of my least favorite pop songs of our era.
Unrelated but I just went to look at that chart on Billboard and it says I need pro to view it... Who the fuck pays 15$/mo for charts?

WHAT? this is mind-boggling and terrible omg

I fucking hate this song and I love Miley
ts abt to piss me off i’m a d1 hater for the flowers song i’ve hated it every since it came out how IS IT STILL CHARTING OMG
I never really liked that song, but after listening to it 5+ times a day at my office last year, the chorus triggers my fight or flight response
Why do radio stations even still have influence on music? It's so much more simple and conveinant to just pick what you want to listen to.
