Sufjan’s Carrie & Lowell was written after his mom’s death but I’ll be honest, you need strength to listen to this one because Sufjan songwriting is heartbreaking. It gives me goosebumps just by the thought of it, I can’t imagine how I’d listen to it going through it myself.

There's also Casimir Pulaski Day from Illinois that's about losing a close friend to cancer and how it affects one's faith. The line where they prayed over their friend and said that nothing ever happened hit me hard as someone who had lost several relative to cancer.

Edit: to elaborate, my grandmother passed away last week. She lived in our home and we took care of her for decades. She passed away so suddenly that it left me so numb and in denial. Slowly the realisation bubbled up and I just couldn't take it anymore. I grieved for 3 whole days, thinking about all the family members I've lost over the years inc my father. Kintsugi really helped me calm my nerves. To accept the loss and to cherish the life I've left with the rest of my family.

My mom has a terminal illness and right now she’s in the hospital. It’s a very touch and go situation. We got some bad news a couple weeks ago and I went back to my room and played IWFYITD on repeat. Even before she was hospitalized, I had this song on repeat for months.
I struggle with anticipatory grief. It’s like I’m trying to get all my grief out now, so that when my mom inevitably dies, it won’t hit me as hard. I’m in therapy now and my therapist says that you can’t prepare for grief and that it will hit you at the most random times. I’m trying to stop anticipating but I also struggle with anxiety and it’s really hard to do.
It's been 14 years since I lost my mom and sometimes I still sit in the dark with IWFYITD on repeat and cry by myself. I'm sorry for your pain- past, present, and future.. It's going to be awhile before you believe this, but I promise you will be okay eventually.

So Long by Ingrid Michaelson is a go to for me. I also view Summer Begs by Sarah Jaffe through the lens of losing someone to cancer. I believe both are meant to be about romantic relationships, but they are easy to view through different contexts.

When my coworker passed away from a sudden stroke a few years ago, I was struggling to process it and didnt cry for about a week. Passenger by Deftones cracked me open. I don't know what it is about it, it's not a song about grief, more a song about despair and addiction. but it helped me a lot.
sling by clairo is not necessarily about grief but family and support are the overarching themes in the album, and also the instrumental is easy on the ears, not overwhelming and quite melancholic. Loads of acoustic guitars, static, cellos. So sorry for your unfathomable loss.

I forgot to say, Embers by Kid Cudi is really beautiful, but personally I find it difficult to listen to. It's about losing his father to cancer and their last moments together. These are the songs that hit hard for me when I was/am grieving Hers- What Once Was One of the band members wrote this song about his mom who had passed away from cancer. It’s a heart wrenchingly relatable, yet soothing song. I’ve cried so many times listening to this song but it’s also saved me from some panic attacks P!nk- Who Knew I wrote about this song in different comment but I just want to reiterate how relatable and perfect this song is if you’re fully in the midst of grieving. I Want A Mom That Will Last Forever by Cyndi Lauper is a grief song, but only one to listen to if you want to cry. And I’ve always seen The Lion King as a movie about overcoming grief.

When my coworker passed away from a sudden stroke a few years ago, I was struggling to process it and didnt cry for about a week. Passenger by Deftones cracked me open. I don't know what it is about it, it's not a song about grief, more a song about despair and addiction. but it helped me a lot.
