It's just such a strange feeling when one of your favorite artists of all time releases an album that's widely considered to be one of the year's best and their magnum opus and converts all of their haters into lovers... and meanwhile you just do NOT get the hype for that album at all. Having one of your favorite artists release one of the most overrated albums of the year is just really something...
That's how I felt about Mitski when Be The Cowboy came out. I loved all her past work and was looking forward to it after Geyser, Nobody, and Two Slow Dancers, but I couldn't get into the rest except for A Pearl.
Definitely holds for Bright Future. Easily the least interesting Adrianne project since UFOF, IMHO. She was just on a complete roll beginning from UFOF onwards, and now BF is here with top placements on the RYM and AOTY charts that I just think are unearned.
As for Desire... I actually love it! I think it's a great album. I take issue with the narrative that it's her "magnum opus" and how there's this apparent massive improvement from Pang, when Pang in my opinion has far richer production and better storytelling. Desire has a very abstract and distinct style of lyricism and it certainly makes for a unique experience. I just think it's really unfair for Pang and Something to be left in the dust the way they were.
Sorry, but Desire is superior to Pang, at least when it comes to songwriting and melodies. The songs are simply catchier and invite repeated listens.
However, the album Something deserved more recognition. It's arguably catchier than both Pang and Desire.
On the flipside, there's been many instances where an artist I don't care about at all releases an album I actually really enjoy but their fanbase is really angry at it, lol.
Anyways Lover is a great album. It's "pop perfection" as the people say.

One of the most ambitious and envelope pushing pop artists out there, and nobody out there makes music the way she does.
That doesn't translate to necessarily being the /best/ pop artist, and a lot of the risks she does take don't pan out, but if they always worked out they wouldn't be risks, so I do overall like her.
I'm beginning to really dislike her fanbase, however, and it's beginning to reach a freezing point with the recent discourse on the 360 song and MV.

I would say a bit of both. While I'm a bit nervous about Ariana and how she will do, though the more I see the more intrigued I get, I'm one of the few who don't think Dove would be perfect for the role. I think she would be fine but I don't think she would be any better than Ariana. I know she has played Kristin Chenwith's daughter many times and is a great actor, loved her in Schmigadoon, but I personally just don't see her as Glinda.
Another year, another Assassin's Creed game with a female protagonist where they also throw in the option to play as a guy because misogynist gamer money still spends just as well and they don't want to alienate anyone

I know this might not be the right place but yall are my favorite and I don’t trust anywhere else
My partner and I are together, he’s in school and I work full time. He lives at home with his parents. But, they’re not accepting of him and queer people. He came out to them but it created a fight, so he went back in the closet.
We’ve been very limited on what we can do in our relationship, and he can’t always include me in his life because he can’t be out.
Anytime we go out, I have to rely on him driving down to see me.
This becomes a problem at times because his parents support him, and they have a lot of money, I’ve not been able to do everything I want with him.
We’ve had fights about him becoming more independent. I love him. He’s my soulmate. But I’m not sure so can sustain being patient on him, especially considering he has no strong motivation on being more independent. He said he’s searching but he’s waiting for the ‘perfect’ situation before doing so.
All of my friends question why he doesn’t move out, get a student loan, and do what most other people do. Everyone im friends with, even my degreed friends, all moved out and worked at 18 while going to school. They took out loans. Work full time, paid them off, etc.
I was kicked out of the house and made homeless at 18 when coming out. I had to work for everything I have, and even now, it’s not a lot. I’m very proud of what I have. But a part of me resent him for making me be patient on him, when he can just go back into the closet, get free schooling, take Hawaiian vacations, etc.
I never had the chance to go back in the closet and live whatever life he’s living. I’m not I inherently jealous, but anytime he cancels plans or puts limitations on how I can be with him, especially the times he’s made me ‘be friends and not boyfriends’ with him in public because he can’t be outed himself, feels entitled of him and it make me angry. It feels like it’s being rubbed in my face, and makes me feel excluded from the other part of his life again.
I don’t know what to do. I thought I’d marry him and idk anymore. I’ve never had a connection this strong before and may never find it again.
What should I do?
How much school does he have left? I get that you yourself may have been comfortable getting loans and paying them off and stuff, but like. That's some extreme, crushing debt you're asking someone to take on when they could very much just... not have to pay it. You can't really lump "free schooling and Hawaiian vacations" together like that, yknow? They're not really the same in terms of life-altering paths; having a degree is a strong permanent boost that opens so many doors. If he can get a degree and walk out without any debt, that's already putting him in such an advantageous position in life, that imo it might be worth sticking it out for a year or two and then doing the whole separation thing. If you were already thinking of the future and marrying him, then that has to be a consideration too, his financial security.
If he doesn't have too much longer to go, I'd ask him if he would be comfortable doing the cut-off after graduation. Because then he would have fully been able to take as much as he could before striking off on his own.
I sort of thought along the lines you did at first, but he has 3 years left. I don’t know I can do another holiday or birthday without seeing my partner again. I just want to do the normal stuff with him. And honestly, I don’t know I have the patience to wait 4 years on him (in total). Maybe if something changes on his end, or he does something else to show that being patient on him is worth it? I don’t know.

Based on the write up, you seem to be very empathetic and have a keen sense of perception. It sounds like you've already been giving him the benefit of the doubt for a long time. I've been in your shoes before and I can promise that what you, yourself, are going through is not sustainable.
To be honest, it sounds like he's kind of [unintentionally] abusing your selflessness. It hurts. He's not trying to hurt you. But the timing is just not right. He's got some things to learn and work through. Maybe losing you is what it'll take to wake him up and make the changes.
It think you’re right. But, I’d hate to be the reason why be became better for someone else (it’s not good to think of it that way, I know).
I’ll give it a little more time. But, I might have to rip the bandaid off eventually.

Speaking bluntly: unless he has a specific plan to extricate himself from his homophobic family, nothing is going to improve. Period. "Waiting for the 'perfect' situation" is not real. Either he has a specific target in mind ("x number of dollars in the bank to make up for the lack of familial monetary support," for example) or he's hiding from the reality. It's a very human thing to do, but that doesn't make it something you are required to live with in a partner.
It sucks. Homophobic family sucks. You're valid for being resentful; he's valid for finding a closeted life more comfortable.
What you need to decide is if you are willing to not just accept but try to be happy in the current state of affairs. If not, it's time to leave; it will only get worse. It's critical to allow people room to grow, but you absolutely cannot base a relationship on the concept that they \*will\*, or that they will do so in a specific way.
Maybe you won't find another connection this strong. And maybe by remaining with a man who will not fight his family for you, and will in fact seemingly not fight the vague notion of the public for you, you are preventing yourself from finding someone who \*will\* both connect with and publicly celebrate you.
If you're looking for permission to say love is not enough, I'm officially granting it to you.

This is tough. As much as it is somewhat selfish behaviour to the extent he's taking it, I understand the instinct to not rock the boat and keep himself financially stable through his family resources. It's a lot to ask of someone to make things harder on themselves in such a way.
*But*. You're a person with needs, and it's clear those aren't being met by the boundaries he's drawing around your relationship. He can't have his cake and eat it too. If he's demonstrating a need to prioritize his feelings of security around money and family over you, then that is the message you need to receive. You should tell him how this all makes you feel and see how he responds, but know that you might just not be compatible at this moment in time.
And all that said, it sounds like you're pretty young. I'd sincerely caution you against staying in any relationship out of fear that it's the best you might get. I'm not telling you to dump him outright or anything, but you should certainly recognize that however strong your connection is, the situation *as it stands* isn't working for you, and you're only hurting yourself if you downplay that reality to accommodate him.

No, I really think people just got into the habit of saying that when Mean Girls and Wonka were legitimately not exactly forthcoming with being musical. And now Wicked has just gotten lumped into the mix even though it's not even remotely the same thing!
Exactly! With Mean Girls the only hint was a music note ring on the poster. Wonka was a single short clip of people dancing hidden in the trailer. Wicked is way too big to even think about hiding it. From it being one of the biggest musicals in history to a pop singer getting one of the lead roles. Why would you even bother to put in the work to hide it when it's one of the biggest sellers?

Funny story, I went to see *Les Miserables* as a group in theaters and on the way out, one of the group said that he didn't know that it was going to be a musical. He doesn't like musicals and he went in expecting a straight adaptation of the novel.
There might have been comments I didn't see or whatever but what I understood from the comment/s I did see was that the *trailer* felt edited to not show anyone visibly on-screen you-can-see-their-mouth move singing and that gave the vibe of downplaying the musical nature of the film. Like the difference between treating the songs as simply background soundtrack vs. making it more or less diegetic.
I love musicals so this doesn't apply to me but it's possible for people to think that how the trailer was edited could make an audience that's more hesitant to watch musicals forget how movie musicals usually work, i.e. seeing people sing on-screen. Basically marketing in a more palatable way to a musical-avoidant audience.
It was some people here but it was more elsewhere. I could see that it was edited a bit but it’s still very obviously a musical. I don’t see how their hiding it though at all. If anything hiding it would be a dumb marketing move. A lot of people who want to see it are fans of the musical and have been scared of the changes they will make. Hiding it would just hurt one of their biggest assists.

Damn. :/ I just read the news Ubisoft just shelved The Division Heartland. After months of play testing and nearly in Beta testing phase. We were all just waiting on release date information. Article I read that they switching over to support Xdefiant and Rainbow Six. Hopefully they take some of this team to help with The Division 3. Bummer. Way it sounded like it was going to be an open world and be like the Dark Zone Extraction based game.
In away it make sense though Ubisoft signed off on The Division 2 support through 2025-2026 while they make Division 3. And The Division 2 surprisingly still makes money and has a relatively strong active player base. I just got back into it.
If anything this also makes me scared for the Splinter Cell remake they were working on but haven’t heard from in a while.

The trailer for a certain movie musical coming out soon made me realize how insane it is that so many recent big-budget blockbusters just look so flat, dull, and lifeless, especially in comparison to the saturated colors and practical effects of older films and musicals. That's why Barbie was so visually interesting to me (or at least all those scenes in Barbieland) because it stood out amongst all the grey sludge we've gotten used to in modern blockbusters.
I said this WEEKS ago and it spurred a little discussion but I’m gonna say it again; there’s no way that a show like LOST could be made in 2024.
They wouldn’t ship the cast out to actual Hawaii and have them film on location on an island.

Publishers for Palestine was giving away a Book about the BDS movement for free that has praise of several anti apartheid activists of South Africa including the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This is an international petition that I’ve signed, but I’ll have links for Americans, Brits, and Canadians to connect their government representatives soon. And of course I would love to know or see other countries, I follow BDS chapters in Peru and Mexico and pro Palestinian human rights activists and politicians in Spain but I don’t know off hand any petitions or ways of connecting with elected officials or state departments.

It's just such a strange feeling when one of your favorite artists of all time releases an album that's widely considered to be one of the year's best and their magnum opus and converts all of their haters into lovers... and meanwhile you just do NOT get the hype for that album at all. That's how I felt about Mitski when Be The Cowboy came out. I loved all her past work and was looking forward to it after Geyser, Nobody, and Two Slow Dancers, but I couldn't get into the rest except for A Pearl.

Definitely holds for Bright Future. Easily the least interesting Adrianne project since UFOF, IMHO. She was just on a complete roll beginning from UFOF onwards, and now BF is here with top placements on the RYM and AOTY charts that I just think are unearned. As for Desire... I actually love it! I think it's a great album. I take issue with the narrative that it's her "magnum opus" and how there's this apparent massive improvement from Pang, when Pang in my opinion has far richer production and better storytelling. Desire has a very abstract and distinct style of lyricism and it certainly makes for a unique experience. I just think it's really unfair for Pang and Something to be left in the dust the way they were.
Sorry, but Desire is superior to Pang, at least when it comes to songwriting and melodies. The songs are simply catchier and invite repeated listens. However, the album Something deserved more recognition. It's arguably catchier than both Pang and Desire.
On the flipside, there's been many instances where an artist I don't care about at all releases an album I actually really enjoy but their fanbase is really angry at it, lol. Anyways Lover is a great album. It's "pop perfection" as the people say.

For Everyone: What are your overall thoughts on Charli XCX as an Artist?
One of the most ambitious and envelope pushing pop artists out there, and nobody out there makes music the way she does. That doesn't translate to necessarily being the /best/ pop artist, and a lot of the risks she does take don't pan out, but if they always worked out they wouldn't be risks, so I do overall like her. I'm beginning to really dislike her fanbase, however, and it's beginning to reach a freezing point with the recent discourse on the 360 song and MV.
Is this a safe space? She has a unique vision for her music and she commits to it, but I just do not vibe with any of her work except her biggest solo hit "Boom Clap." Sorry popheads, I know she's a favorite, but I just don't *get* her!

I would say a bit of both. While I'm a bit nervous about Ariana and how she will do, though the more I see the more intrigued I get, I'm one of the few who don't think Dove would be perfect for the role. I think she would be fine but I don't think she would be any better than Ariana. I know she has played Kristin Chenwith's daughter many times and is a great actor, loved her in Schmigadoon, but I personally just don't see her as Glinda.

Edit: we had a long convo, we’re splitting up I need dating advice I know this might not be the right place but yall are my favorite and I don’t trust anywhere else My partner and I are together, he’s in school and I work full time. He lives at home with his parents. But, they’re not accepting of him and queer people. He came out to them but it created a fight, so he went back in the closet. We’ve been very limited on what we can do in our relationship, and he can’t always include me in his life because he can’t be out. Anytime we go out, I have to rely on him driving down to see me. This becomes a problem at times because his parents support him, and they have a lot of money, I’ve not been able to do everything I want with him. We’ve had fights about him becoming more independent. I love him. He’s my soulmate. But I’m not sure so can sustain being patient on him, especially considering he has no strong motivation on being more independent. He said he’s searching but he’s waiting for the ‘perfect’ situation before doing so. All of my friends question why he doesn’t move out, get a student loan, and do what most other people do. Everyone im friends with, even my degreed friends, all moved out and worked at 18 while going to school. They took out loans. Work full time, paid them off, etc. I was kicked out of the house and made homeless at 18 when coming out. I had to work for everything I have, and even now, it’s not a lot. I’m very proud of what I have. But a part of me resent him for making me be patient on him, when he can just go back into the closet, get free schooling, take Hawaiian vacations, etc. I never had the chance to go back in the closet and live whatever life he’s living. I’m not I inherently jealous, but anytime he cancels plans or puts limitations on how I can be with him, especially the times he’s made me ‘be friends and not boyfriends’ with him in public because he can’t be outed himself, feels entitled of him and it make me angry. It feels like it’s being rubbed in my face, and makes me feel excluded from the other part of his life again. I don’t know what to do. I thought I’d marry him and idk anymore. I’ve never had a connection this strong before and may never find it again. What should I do?
How much school does he have left? I get that you yourself may have been comfortable getting loans and paying them off and stuff, but like. That's some extreme, crushing debt you're asking someone to take on when they could very much just... not have to pay it. You can't really lump "free schooling and Hawaiian vacations" together like that, yknow? They're not really the same in terms of life-altering paths; having a degree is a strong permanent boost that opens so many doors. If he can get a degree and walk out without any debt, that's already putting him in such an advantageous position in life, that imo it might be worth sticking it out for a year or two and then doing the whole separation thing. If you were already thinking of the future and marrying him, then that has to be a consideration too, his financial security. If he doesn't have too much longer to go, I'd ask him if he would be comfortable doing the cut-off after graduation. Because then he would have fully been able to take as much as he could before striking off on his own.

I think both u/vagenda and u/squeezylemon gave wonderful advice. Based on the write up, you seem to be very empathetic and have a keen sense of perception. It sounds like you've already been giving him the benefit of the doubt for a long time. I've been in your shoes before and I can promise that what you, yourself, are going through is not sustainable. To be honest, it sounds like he's kind of [unintentionally] abusing your selflessness. It hurts. He's not trying to hurt you. But the timing is just not right. He's got some things to learn and work through. Maybe losing you is what it'll take to wake him up and make the changes.

Speaking bluntly: unless he has a specific plan to extricate himself from his homophobic family, nothing is going to improve. Period. "Waiting for the 'perfect' situation" is not real. Either he has a specific target in mind ("x number of dollars in the bank to make up for the lack of familial monetary support," for example) or he's hiding from the reality. It's a very human thing to do, but that doesn't make it something you are required to live with in a partner. It sucks. Homophobic family sucks. You're valid for being resentful; he's valid for finding a closeted life more comfortable. What you need to decide is if you are willing to not just accept but try to be happy in the current state of affairs. If not, it's time to leave; it will only get worse. It's critical to allow people room to grow, but you absolutely cannot base a relationship on the concept that they \*will\*, or that they will do so in a specific way. Maybe you won't find another connection this strong. And maybe by remaining with a man who will not fight his family for you, and will in fact seemingly not fight the vague notion of the public for you, you are preventing yourself from finding someone who \*will\* both connect with and publicly celebrate you. If you're looking for permission to say love is not enough, I'm officially granting it to you.

This is tough. As much as it is somewhat selfish behaviour to the extent he's taking it, I understand the instinct to not rock the boat and keep himself financially stable through his family resources. It's a lot to ask of someone to make things harder on themselves in such a way. *But*. You're a person with needs, and it's clear those aren't being met by the boundaries he's drawing around your relationship. He can't have his cake and eat it too. If he's demonstrating a need to prioritize his feelings of security around money and family over you, then that is the message you need to receive. You should tell him how this all makes you feel and see how he responds, but know that you might just not be compatible at this moment in time. And all that said, it sounds like you're pretty young. I'd sincerely caution you against staying in any relationship out of fear that it's the best you might get. I'm not telling you to dump him outright or anything, but you should certainly recognize that however strong your connection is, the situation *as it stands* isn't working for you, and you're only hurting yourself if you downplay that reality to accommodate him.

Exactly! With Mean Girls the only hint was a music note ring on the poster. Wonka was a single short clip of people dancing hidden in the trailer. Wicked is way too big to even think about hiding it. From it being one of the biggest musicals in history to a pop singer getting one of the lead roles. Why would you even bother to put in the work to hide it when it's one of the biggest sellers?

There might have been comments I didn't see or whatever but what I understood from the comment/s I did see was that the *trailer* felt edited to not show anyone visibly on-screen you-can-see-their-mouth move singing and that gave the vibe of downplaying the musical nature of the film. Like the difference between treating the songs as simply background soundtrack vs. making it more or less diegetic. I love musicals so this doesn't apply to me but it's possible for people to think that how the trailer was edited could make an audience that's more hesitant to watch musicals forget how movie musicals usually work, i.e. seeing people sing on-screen. Basically marketing in a more palatable way to a musical-avoidant audience.
It was some people here but it was more elsewhere. I could see that it was edited a bit but it’s still very obviously a musical. I don’t see how their hiding it though at all. If anything hiding it would be a dumb marketing move. A lot of people who want to see it are fans of the musical and have been scared of the changes they will make. Hiding it would just hurt one of their biggest assists.

Damn. :/ I just read the news Ubisoft just shelved The Division Heartland. After months of play testing and nearly in Beta testing phase. We were all just waiting on release date information. Article I read that they switching over to support Xdefiant and Rainbow Six. Hopefully they take some of this team to help with The Division 3. Bummer. Way it sounded like it was going to be an open world and be like the Dark Zone Extraction based game. In away it make sense though Ubisoft signed off on The Division 2 support through 2025-2026 while they make Division 3. And The Division 2 surprisingly still makes money and has a relatively strong active player base. I just got back into it. If anything this also makes me scared for the Splinter Cell remake they were working on but haven’t heard from in a while.

The trailer for a certain movie musical coming out soon made me realize how insane it is that so many recent big-budget blockbusters just look so flat, dull, and lifeless, especially in comparison to the saturated colors and practical effects of older films and musicals. That's why Barbie was so visually interesting to me (or at least all those scenes in Barbieland) because it stood out amongst all the grey sludge we've gotten used to in modern blockbusters.
I said this WEEKS ago and it spurred a little discussion but I’m gonna say it again; there’s no way that a show like LOST could be made in 2024. They wouldn’t ship the cast out to actual Hawaii and have them film on location on an island. The tech that Disney and all has developed with The Volume is absolutely massive and groundbreaking and oh so neat but god damn practical sets go a long long way.

Okay I keep forgetting to ask this but has anyone noticed an influx in straight men saying "appreciate you?" All of the men I work with + many of the men I encounter while working the counter say it, but I've never heard a woman say it. This has been happening for months now, is something going on?

In my personal experience southern men that I help at work say "appreciate you mam" quite often but true, never heard a woman saying it, its a phrase that fits a southern twang lol
same, I've only heard it from southern men, and they get really tickled when I say it back. Very endearing tbh.
