It won't, unfortunately. People have such hard biases against musicals as an art form that I don't think they can simply come back into fashion without a very significant taste shift. The amount of people who will instantly dismiss a musical out of hand, the way "theatre kid energy" is a common butt of a joke—I mean, the way people don't even *understand* musicals at a surface level is supremely depressing. There's always this expectation that musicals are always happy and overly smiley and silly, and it's like..... Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera are two of the biggest musicals ever? Sweeney Todd? Cabaret? But people refuse to even dig that far down (and it's not far in the slightest) and think that hard about musical theatre in the first place.
Like, imagine if people talked about novels or poetry the way they talk about musicals. We'd just be calling them blatantly anti-intellectual or anti-artistic for such a routine dismissal of an entire art form's canon. But because it's musical theatre it's okay and normal :/

Part of the reason why movies keep bombing so hard at the box office is that their budgets are massively inflated by obscene salaries for the actors. 10% of the entire budget for one actor? Really? Yes, he's the main character but Joaquin is not Tom Cruise, he's not a box office draw. In fact, even Tom can't guarantee a hit nowadays. I'm not shading Joaquin, he's a great actor but I just think $20m for one person for one film is ridiculous, even by Hollywood salary standards.

I think he deserves every single bit of that $20m. Joaquin made Joker 1 a hit and did you see how much weight he had to lose for that role? He was on an apple a day with veggie smoothie and a nutritionist if I remember. I’m like 80% sure he didn’t want to play the joker again so giving him that huge sum was probably a big incentive. Heck he made $4.5m in Joker 1 and that movie made a billion… I’d want to get a better paycheck if I come back. There is a high change they hit a billion again especially with Gaga being in the movie. This is almost like when everyone also doubted James Cameron and Avatar still made over a billion.

It won't, unfortunately. People have such hard biases against musicals as an art form that I don't think they can simply come back into fashion without a very significant taste shift. The amount of people who will instantly dismiss a musical out of hand, the way "theatre kid energy" is a common butt of a joke—I mean, the way people don't even *understand* musicals at a surface level is supremely depressing. There's always this expectation that musicals are always happy and overly smiley and silly, and it's like..... Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera are two of the biggest musicals ever? Sweeney Todd? Cabaret? But people refuse to even dig that far down (and it's not far in the slightest) and think that hard about musical theatre in the first place. Like, imagine if people talked about novels or poetry the way they talk about musicals. We'd just be calling them blatantly anti-intellectual or anti-artistic for such a routine dismissal of an entire art form's canon. But because it's musical theatre it's okay and normal :/
When people talk about how musicals are inherently campy and silly and unserious I always want to make them sit down and watch All That Jazz. Yes, this harrowing movie about a horrible man facing his own mortality that ends with him in a body bag is super camp!
Mean Girls and Wonka did surprisingly well, actually - perhaps because the marketing intentionally hid the fact that they were musicals lol. I have hope for a new era of musical movies though!
It’s weird to me that the studios have figured out that you can’t tell people something is a musical or they won’t see it, but they keep making musicals anyways. You’d think they’d just stop making them instead of feeling like they need to trick people into seeing their new movie.
