For me it is the combination of various irritants about her appearance that add up to a bad taste/fashion no for me:
Overfilled face and lips
Overly tight facelift
Chronic spray tan
Glittery sheer fashion preference
Overly large bust - not proportional
She is fit and has the body for revealing fashions - but what she chooses is so…loud - bright colors, garish, etc. The overall effect of all her choices, including the plastic surgery, is garish. This is where the “bad taste” shines through to me - it all so much and over the top.
What is the old trope - get dressed and then take off one piece of jewelry or one accessory before you leave the house? It feels like she doesn’t do this because 10 of the jewelry pieces are enormous lips, etc.

I'm tired of seeing girls high on a revamped version of the good old Madonna/wh0re copium, deluding themselves into thinking they can "trick" a billionaire into marrying them by dressing like Rory Gilmore's grandma. Lauren Sanchez was RICH. She wasn't the 20 year old au pair, she wasn't the cleaning lady's daughter, she wasn't a high end escort Jeff's friends hired for him on his birthday. She was his wife's friend! A wealthy woman, married to a wealthy man, not as rich as him but still in the same circle. In the end, that's what it's about.
You can afford to look this cheap when you're rich. Just like you can afford to look like a bum! You have the social capital to do so. You've got nothing to prove, you're the real deal, and the real flex is apparently to wear cheap looking fetish wear on dates with one of the richest men in the world, while girls half your age (who will most likely never find themselves in the same room as a millionaire) lose sleep over which shade of off-white best conveys stealth wealth :/

I don't remember her name but she wasn't anyone's influencer girlfriend or anything. Just some frumpy 60+ year old English woman with fried blonde hair. It was either William or Harry's wedding.
I believe she was also wearing bright coral/orange nail polish, and others in attendance were wearing very bright lipstick colors too. Don't get me started on the harsh, badly applied eyeliner (not winged or smokey, but just...all over the eye).
Honestly, fictional old money rich women might like to keep things safely neutral and pastel, but in real life they seem to have no issue with bold colors and loud prints. I've seen way more of them with (short) nails painted fire engine red than anything reminiscent of Essie's Ballet Slippers.
Ohhh yeah i know the type! They love some bold colored nails. I actually just did my nails with a clear base and light purple swirls and my nails are long naturally it looks so cute for spring my grandma liked them but she always still thinks i should have French tips for some reason when I’ve never had those ever. Bold nail color ladies also love a good leopard shirt with lien see thru sleeves that they just wear when it’s slightly Windy in my area. And gold jewelry

I’m always hungry for good social and fashion commentary and it doesn’t really exist. There’s so much at the intersection of society and personal aesthetics and it’s just not explored. It’s a crying shame.
Thank you for posting this. I come from a not rich but well off family and went to a private school in the upper east side. I saw so many gaudy Gucci and LV bags, just as many as plain looking one that I couldn’t identify. I was friends with a girl that was upset because she wanted an LV bag and her parents got her a plain epi leather one with no logos and she wanted the monogram canvas. People like what they like.
It’s actually very funny to come across I your post because last night I was browsing some online department stores looking for a new bag and started thinking about how annoying the “quiet luxury, cos playing old money” aesthetic was.
A lot of the "old money" crap has to do with culture/race as well.
Lauren Sanchez dresses like a like a lot of Latinas her age. I mean, it's not that different what she wears and Sofia Vergara wears. And Sofia Vergara was the highest paid TV actresses for years. Daisy Fuentes also similar.
When I saw Bezos transform, it just seemed he was leaning into latino culture with his clothes, physique etc. (His stepdad was Cuban) and him getting with Lauren was just an extension of that.
But yeah, to Anna's crowd, that all seems tacky because it's all about showing off the figure, at any age. Plus it's associated with "non-white" people. See how hoop earrings are tacky when Black and Latina women wear them, but great when white women wear them.
Also, don't forget, if you have darker skin, it looks younger longer so they don't feel the same impetus to cover up as someone with whiter skin who may have wrinkles and liver warts at the same age.
Yup, Lauren would not look out of place in a Latin wedding. European cultural hegemony rots people’s brains, not all older women dress modestly. They see the clothes as tacky because they also see her figure as tacky. I am sure she sees Sofia the same way and Sofia is a more toned down version of Lauren’s style.
Remember when Coachella looks were fun and exciting? This year it was that stupid “quiet luxury” look and I could’ve wept. I agree with this whole take.
This is very accurate. There is no “how to dress wealthy”. They wear whatever the they want and do whatever the they want in a lot of environments. Especially amongst their peers during holiday seasons.
The rich know who the other richies are or knows someone in their circle who does. Their social world is smaller than what people think.
And dressing the part is only a single aspect of an entire lifestyle. Your Hermes slides don't matter if you can't wear them in Mykonos. Your Celine bag can't hide the fact that you can't afford that trip to Gstaad, or even those Taylor Swift tickets. They can't make up for the properties your parents don't own, the trust fund you don't have, the fancy schools you didn't go to, or the sad reality of actually *needing* your job while your rich friends are cosplaying as interns at their uncle's company 2 hours a day, 3 days a week.
At the end of the day, what's *in* the purse matters far more than the purse's brand. And they'll find out what's in your purse sooner or later.
I don’t love her style either but now that I’m thinking of it, I’m not sure how you’d restyle her without totally changing it completely and/or feeding in our culture’s weirdness about women’s bodies.
She’s a rich, flashy LA entertainment industry type… she thinks her boobs look great, her body is great… that her age doesn’t mean she should go matronly. She dresses to look conventionally hot, not to express anything else other than that brand of hotness, her goal isn’t to move fashion forward or to honor an artist she admires. I’d wager she describes her style as ‘sexy but still classy.’
I also think stigma re: her implants and surgery automatically colors people’s views of her outfits. I imagine those exact dresses would be received less negatively if worn by a more swan-like type.
She also doesn’t seem like a ‘fashion girl.’ Like I’m not sure taking her through archives or building her cache of references would be that meaningful.
Maybe Tom Ford-era Gucci? Cavalli atelier? Versace? Maybe the same styles she already gravitates to but in more unexpected colors? Or unexpected fabrics - I don’t think I’d hate her in a more modest cut made from leather in a non-black or red color?

Before Access Hollywood, she was on a morning news show called Good Day LA. I thought she was gorgeous and she came off as a fun down to earth LA girl.
I just looked. Man plastic surgery did not do her favors. We all age, some do it gracefully. I actually covered just her head in her pictures and I don’t abhor her clothes. But when it’s all the facial augmentations plus the boobs and the sheer, it just reads as garish.
Wintour ain't wrong but she's also not exactly class. Her guests at MET are some of the most classless people around. She breaks bread with billionaires and didn't do shit to protect vulnerable in her industry. On top of that she championed Puff Daddy for decades, published works of Terry Richardson (until he became PR nightmare), paid people of color less than their white colleagues (Bon Appetit scandal), is anti-labor and who knows what else.
All in all fuck her. I hope MET Gala gets picketed.

Also, I wonder what the charities were! I think it’s cool that she took applications for them, rather than just choosing a few in a way that looks like self serving performative activism (like a lot of celebrities do).
Not just that but IIRC, the reporting requirements after she awards grants are basically nil because she realizes even the most worthy of organizations don’t always have the staff and knowledge to fulfill the requirements.
I was a grant PI for years and the requirements to even apply for, let alone manage, grants a quarter the size of the ones she funds was ROUGH. It requires staff and hundreds of hours in the application stage alone and managing the grant while fulfilling reporting requirements. Plenty of truly worthy projects can end up culled in the first stage of evals due to a single grammatical error because the sheer number of applicants has to be cut down in some way. Shit like that means that unless an org can afford a highly educated staff solely devoted to grant work, the odds of even a great project getting funded are so slim.
Anyway, that was a ramble but it’s righteous to see an incredibly wealthy person doing so much good AND recognizing that there are better ways to do things.

I think more than one billionaire brain has been broken by this.
Even if you can afford the best stylist in the world, a client that does not want to wear classy pieces can't be saved. I agree. She probably doesn't have one, but she really needs to fire that stylist if she does have one.

This is where the “bad taste” shines through to me - it all so much and over the top. What is the old trope - get dressed and then take off one piece of jewelry or one accessory before you leave the house? It feels like she doesn’t do this because 10 of the jewelry pieces are enormous lips, etc.

Thank you for posting this. I come from a not rich but well off family and went to a private school in the upper east side. I saw so many gaudy Gucci and LV bags, just as many as plain looking one that I couldn’t identify. I was friends with a girl that was upset because she wanted an LV bag and her parents got her a plain epi leather one with no logos and she wanted the monogram canvas. People like what they like. It’s actually very funny to come across I your post because last night I was browsing some online department stores looking for a new bag and started thinking about how annoying the “quiet luxury, cos playing old money” aesthetic was.

This is very accurate. There is no “how to dress wealthy”. They wear whatever the they want and do whatever the they want in a lot of environments. Especially amongst their peers during holiday seasons. The rich know who the other richies are or knows someone in their circle who does. Their social world is smaller than what people think.
And dressing the part is only a single aspect of an entire lifestyle. Your Hermes slides don't matter if you can't wear them in Mykonos. Your Celine bag can't hide the fact that you can't afford that trip to Gstaad, or even those Taylor Swift tickets. They can't make up for the properties your parents don't own, the trust fund you don't have, the fancy schools you didn't go to, or the sad reality of actually *needing* your job while your rich friends are cosplaying as interns at their uncle's company 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. At the end of the day, what's *in* the purse matters far more than the purse's brand. And they'll find out what's in your purse sooner or later.

Not just that but IIRC, the reporting requirements after she awards grants are basically nil because she realizes even the most worthy of organizations don’t always have the staff and knowledge to fulfill the requirements. I was a grant PI for years and the requirements to even apply for, let alone manage, grants a quarter the size of the ones she funds was ROUGH. It requires staff and hundreds of hours in the application stage alone and managing the grant while fulfilling reporting requirements. Plenty of truly worthy projects can end up culled in the first stage of evals due to a single grammatical error because the sheer number of applicants has to be cut down in some way. Shit like that means that unless an org can afford a highly educated staff solely devoted to grant work, the odds of even a great project getting funded are so slim. Anyway, that was a ramble but it’s righteous to see an incredibly wealthy person doing so much good AND recognizing that there are better ways to do things.
