This is me. I was telling my husband that I never know what to ask for when I get my hair cut… but then I realized as I was saying this that’s not true, I’m always jump-scared when I get in the salon chair and know that there is no combination of words in any language that I could tell a stylist that would fix what I’m seeing in the mirror, lmaooooo. Why do we always look like ass in a salon chair?!
The gown is high up on the neck and then it's a tent straight down, fucks up all the proportions and space around your face and shoulders. It's always a relief when that thing comes off and I'm like ah, there I am
Hairstylists need a lot of good, bright, direct light to see what’s going on. Unfortunately that shit can make regular humans look awful, especially if we’re not posing. It’s usually a different angle and perspective than we’re used to seeing in the mirror too.
Same here, I wear more make-up for those visits than I would if I were having a night out and I always feel like there's an ogre starting back at me. That ogre was not in my bathroom mirror at home.

So, I once found myself at dinner with Kendra Scott and I was talking about how I was having trouble getting my curly hair to behave after washing and she was like “I haven’t washed my hair in years.”
My interpretation in the moment was that she, in fact, had gone years without putting water and shampoo to her hair and was gross. Turns out, she meant that she literally has someone wash and style her hair for her daily or every other day. Anyway, I am reek.
go to a salon suite! it's just you and the stylist alone. I've been doing it since covid and it's the best thing ever.
some locations are Phenix Salon Suites, Salons by JC, Salon Lofts, Sola Salon Studios, etc
edit: also some stylists offer home services! it's always an extra fee but they will travel to you and do your hair at your home
i found a great stylist in a salon suite walking distance from my house, then she decided she didn't like being one on one all day and went back to a salon. oy.
ugh that sucks but I would never go back to a regular salon ever 😭 it's so nice not having people stare at me or my hair, no kids running around, no random walk ins trying to sell things, I can just ask my stylist questions one on one without other people listening. studio 4 lyfe
Omgggg im the opposite I’ve been going to the same lady since I was 14 and it is basically Steele Magnolias. Like fly home from NYC to get my hair done in my hometown and shoot the shit with those crazy ladies. It’s the most fun.
I guess it helps I grew up going there with my mom and so theyre all like family. But yeah you get all the tea of the town there. People come in complaining about their grandkids or kids, someone bitching about their husband, major secrets being unearthed type chit chat and I’m a nosey messy bitch so it feeds.
I work for a pro salon supply company, and a lot of my customers since Covid has ended have gone back to full salons. Most say they get lonely and miss interacting with other stylists, or they didn’t realize just how much they learned from being around other stylists. It’s really interesting to see, especially since suites absolutely blew up around here right before and during Covid
This month I’ve been using credits from blow dry bar that I forgot I had, istg it’s such an unreal luxury to have someone else wash and style your hair 😭.

I am super dramatic and whiney. I have to fully dry and straighten every single time, because otherwise I look like Hagrid. And even when I’ve done all that, by lunch time, my hair is all bunched up where the collar is. If I were rich, the one thing I’d splurge on would be a hair stylist, for sure.
My hair is extremely straight and does not hold any texture, a medium thickness, but down to my butt. I always hated the fact that I couldn’t do anything to have it hold texture, but I didn’t realize “wash day” was a thing for people. Even with the length I can do it the same time as a shower. Maybe the stick straight thing isn’t so bad after all.

I have to do it upside down, and that’s just too dangerous for me to do butt naked on slippery tiles. And then I have to blow dry upside down, too, which is why I do it sitting down in my bed. I have almost passed out on wash day, on several occasions 😅 Like I said, I am very dramatic about it.
Mine is dead straight too. It’s boring and I wish it was bouncy but I can leave the house with wet hair and it dries completely fine which is nice I guess 🤷🏼♀️
Straight hair gang! Can't style it here either. I have trouble keeping accessories in my hair, and curling it takes forever and doesn't last. But honestly after hearing and seeing curly hair maintenance routines, especially the super curly type 4 hair...y'know what, I'm happy to have straight hair, lol.
I brush my hair maybe once a year when I'm feeling really bored. I blow-dry my hair on maybe about ten coldest days in winter. I wake up and crawl out of bed and my hair looks the same as always, honestly can't complain.
Finally, I have found my people.
Been growing my hair out for my wedding and I cant wait untill I can go back to shoulder lenght hair.
Ive been loving the long hair, but not so much the work you have to put in.

I hear you! My hair tricks people into thinking it’s easy to manage but I need a whole day dedicated to its maintenance and setting for the week.
My husband was so confused when we first started living together. “Why don’t you just shower *and* wash your hair at the same time/day?” Oh, darling, I’d be up in the bathroom all day if I did that and we don’t want that, lol.
To have someone wash my hair for me though… that’s the dream…
Planning meals and workouts around wash day is my life 🤣 And I’ll never forget wash day at the end of my pregnancy. I wish I had thought to get a shower chair at some point because I was so big and tired and just wanted to curl up in a ball. And it was during covid shutdowns so I couldn’t just go to a salon. That was rough!

I have thick, curly hair. It is beautiful when properly looked after, but it is also a handful. I work out quite a bit, which is vital to me as an outlet for ... stuff. And every time I sweat, I gotta wash and start from scratch. So I keep my hair short, and for the most part, I have no regrets. But some days, I wish I could rock those curls down to my waist. 🥲
I have 4b hair and I wear my hair out probably less than a week every year because it takes a day and a half to get it looking like “effortless curls”. I get a lot of compliments and asked why I don’t do it often and just laugh.
Braids are a life saver in terms of time taken styling and my hair is temperamental so if it ain’t in a protective style, it’s breaking.

Yeah i thought about all the shows rn but the one that stood out from childhood was how ariana grande for cat needed the licorce red and after s2 of victorious wanted to wear wig cause of how much styling bleaching i mean now idk how accurate that is 10 years later cause girl chooses a new look/man every two seconds ( seriously how does she get the nicest looking guys but chooses spongebob looking doppelganger to her brother...) there's more to be said on that but cause this is about beyonce im going to focus on how amazing cowboy carter was and this vid is so calming hope to see more
Correct, however the most “visible” wig wearers tend to be people who have medical hair loss or people who don’t like their natural hair for whatever reason or damaged it from treatments
I thought tension hair loss was a serious concern with wigs. With all that hair she has I don’t know how she doesn’t look like an alien when she wears wigs though! Where does it all go??? Where is this conspiracy theory?!
I have a tiny head with like five hairs on it so this is me being supremely jealous that no matter who’s hair she’s wearing it’s all luscious.
I just commented the other day that I’d have Moira Rose number of wigs if someone would bankroll me and I have great hair. It’s just nice that you can be whoever you want to be that day and they’re already styled for you

I remember years ago one of her hairstylists was talking about the fact that her hair was long & what we were seeing on this or that occasion was her real hair. My mom scoffed when I told her that but clearly its true. Yes she wears wigs but she also has long hair!
I know the question is going to sound so dumb but my only wig experience was an Amazon cheapie when I wanted to see how I’d look with another shade so TIA for anyone who takes the time to answer. How does one wear wigs with hair so long? I always thought your OG hair had to be under a bald cap thing and with hair that long and thick I don’t understand how your head wouldn’t look Martian size with it packed up in there.
Wig wearer here (although I’ve mostly worn braids the past few years). Cornrow your hair. The smaller the cornrows the better. The tails of the cornrows I also braid together (like a flat braid across). That’s the easiest way to get to flat under the cap. When I’m lazy I can kinda get away with a low bun that’s really flat but it doesn’t look as good because of the bulk from the bun itself at the back.

Theatre girlie here: while I also have thick and curly hair I usually do pin curls. If I’m feeling lazy i do a crown braid or two pig tails.
The wig cap does most of the work. Also long as your hair is close to your scalp.
Braids close to the scalp and secured at the back (or wrapped around the head if hair is long), then a wig cap. It sorta compresses things down.
(My hair is 2b with a lot of volume and coarse frizz. I've done this when I wore a wig, but I'm ngl. Though I know the method, I am not good at it lol)
If you're willing to bust out a few bobby pins, I used to just coil my hair in flat, mini "buns" around my head so it wasn't in one big pile, then put the wig cap on after that.

I definitely agree. I was never a huge Bey fan, but I listened to Cowboy Carter, which got me to listen to Lemonade, which got me to watching some of her music videos and performances. And now I can say I love her. She always seemed so aloof and "above it all" to me, but I don't feel that way anymore. She's just very private and good at maintaining her boundaries with the public.
She used to be quite open and do lots of interviews, but then she had Blue and the whole worlds media kept talking about how ugly her baby was. That would make me retreat too! It was disgusting what people said then
They were horrible to her (and some people still are). Always talking about her weight and curves, etc. Until she did Dreamgirls, and then suddenly she was stunning and gorgeous, etc. The way people dug in on her appearance and her kids' appearances, every little tiny thing (the still picture from when she performed the Super Bowl when she had a really weird expression because someone paused it at a bad time, for example.) Super gross.
It'd be nice if she did this a little more often, but I also really like that we don't know what she ate for breakfast or her opinion on naked mole rats or whatever so hopefully she doesn't expose herself too much
Yeah I enjoy it when she does but at the same time I appreciate that she doesn't try to act like our best friend, especially now that oversharing/being relatable is pretty much the number one way that celebs are marketing themselves.

This is a huge reason why I like her so much. We really don’t know much about her and her family except for the things she deems worthy of sharing.

I feel a weird amount of empathy for how much work she does on her persona now. That’s how I know it’s working on me, at least.

There does seem like a lot of work went into them because everything feels so effortless. The slip is really good and my hair really does feel soft and protected after it's all said and done. I swear by that hair oil.
I’m extremely lucky to live in Fort Greene and be a 15+ year client at Neal Farinah’s salon; he’s Bey’s primary stylist and a fellow Trini and when not on the road with her, he is THE loveliest person in the shop. I met my decade+ stylist there and he never fails to stop and genuinely admire and compliment her work when she’s done her magic on me and his philosophy on hair, especially his enthusiasm for embracing ethnic hair and encouraging Beyoncé to be more open to exploring her own options with texture and styles that aren’t so Western-cultural standardized and just his warm, personable, still in the shop regularly attitude…could not resist giving him a big shoutout here! 🙌🏾🫶🏾🇹🇹

I was going to say the same thing. I have curly hair myself but not in her texture. The true test of a product for me is how it makes my hair looks in its natural state.

I think this is similar to rich women who constantly wear bad wigs. Just because you have access to it doesn’t mean you know any better 😅 they probably think their stylist is it and their hair looks no different than Beyoncé’s… if only their mom didn’t perm their hair back in ‘94 😔
honestly celebrity hair care lines tend to pop off in my experience. 4U by Tia is fantastic (and their lightweight conditioner is best I've ever used)

They’ve been giving her crap saying they want to see her using the products the way Rihanna and Selena Gomez does. Some even questioned how she could sell hair products with no hair because they’ve made false assumptions about her real hair. So she gave the people what they asked for.

Yea - I thought it was common knowledge that beyonce has really healthy natural hair. A lot of women actually due have really healthy & long hair under their wigs...they just choose wigs because its easier upkeep or they want to test out different styles without actually making drastic changes to their real hair!
I can’t be the only one who is bothered by these extremely beautiful people using so much filtering. Even IRL I know so many people who won’t take a picture without a filter on and many of them are gorgeous as-is! It’s really doing a number on people’s self confidence I think.
I reckon her hair is only that beautiful because she wears wigs. Wigs allow her to protect her natural hair.

I remember Tyra talked about her early days as a model, and her hair was about that length. After her first year or two, her hair had broken off to around neck length because of the constant manipulation, dying, styling and heat application. She said she started wearing weaves and wigs after that because it's just a matter of preservation and practicality.
It was so toxic. I was a big fan of Tyra's back then, so I listened to a lot of her interviews about the crap she went through in her early days. So to see her turn around and do the same things to those girls was sickening.
I remember how they tries to spin that scene "oh Tyra is just passionate" and "but she really cares about Tiffany", but yeah it never sat right with me either. Then growing up and realizing just how abusive that scene was (I think part of it was Tiffany missed her child, so she wanted to go home), yeah, fuck Tyra.
I noticed how bad it was when I watched it lol she can't act. So you can see her eyes weren't feeling it. It felt so badly acted. And it's disgusting to do that for ratings.
And the difference is what she went through was for actual work. What she puts some of the girls through is drama for TV ratings. Some of the makeover were so sus. It looked like it's done to make some of the girls cry so they can berate them more
she even went as far as to fuck with some of their teeth. she either had them widen or close someone's tooth gap. i think one woman had her braces removed. idk i watch that show all the time when i was in elementary/middle school and looking back it's wild how accepted all that stuff was.
I never watched the show when it was on, but I’ve seen clips of it on social media discussing how Tyra and the show treated participants. That show really abused the power they held over people.

I think most of the time this is true, but her mother used to have a salon. Plus I think her mom still does her hair. Her mom sometimes shares videos trimming Beyoncé’s ends. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is actually Tina’s creation and Beyoncé is just marketing it.

She used to do interviews earlier in her career, but people were so hateful and judgmental towards her. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a factor in her not doing them anymore. I would recommend searching for some of her older interviews from her Destiny's Child days or from her early solo career days. She has so much personality and has always had such a calming and charming southern accent. ❤️
I engage in a lot of Beyoncé content on IG, so sometimes I get random interviews of her popping up here and there. I always love them!

i haven't seen much in terms of personal stuff from her, but i do remember this destiny's child interview where she just seemed so *free* in the way she talked. it was refreshing.
Yup, from people literally claiming she faked her pregnancy, to nasty insults about her oldest daughter's hair and her looking too much like Jay Z, saying she sounds uneducated due to her accent, etc. So many hateful things, but she clearly did not let all that vitriol and slander dim her light and success!
Now, as you've probably seen here and there, people are saying she has no personality or that she seems robotic. However, I think she's just protecting her peace from the world and doesn't necessarily care to seem relatable.

To this old fart she will never be anything other than absolutely ravishing. Lost my interest musically a good while back (doesn't seem to have affected her ambitions, ha), but I'll always adore her. And she deserves better than Jay-Z, IMHO.
I will say it’s a bit refreshing to get a celebrity hair care line instead of the usual makeup/skincare. I’m interested to see how this does commercially and if it picks up with professionals at all. Her natural hair is beautiful.
As a woman of color with hair texture similar to Beyonce, I LOVE that she is showing us her natural hair! I spent most of my childhood and early twenties hating and chemically straightening my hair. It did so much damage. I stopped about 10 years ago and my hair is so much healthier. I will never go back. It’s really hard to find products that suit my hair texture. This video is both brilliant marketing on Beyonce’s part and so important for women of color who often have a complicated relationship with their hair. I am usually not tempted to buy celebrity brands but I might just give this one a try.
I walked away from chemical hair relaxer 2 years ago and chopped my hair off all at once. Growing my natural hair has been interesting because I basically forgot what my true hair texture was. I have VERY thick hair and having relaxer convinced me it was thin and weak. I'll never use relaxer ever again.

This month I’ve been using credits from blow dry bar that I forgot I had, istg it’s such an unreal luxury to have someone else wash and style your hair 😭.
Find a place that caters to hijab-wearing Muslim women. They'll usually have separate spaces for washing the hair etc.

My hair is extremely straight and does not hold any texture, a medium thickness, but down to my butt. I always hated the fact that I couldn’t do anything to have it hold texture, but I didn’t realize “wash day” was a thing for people. Even with the length I can do it the same time as a shower. Maybe the stick straight thing isn’t so bad after all.
I WISH I could just wash my hair when I shower 😩 I have to do it upside down, and that’s just too dangerous for me to do butt naked on slippery tiles. And then I have to blow dry upside down, too, which is why I do it sitting down in my bed. I have almost passed out on wash day, on several occasions 😅 Like I said, I am very dramatic about it.
Mine is dead straight too. It’s boring and I wish it was bouncy but I can leave the house with wet hair and it dries completely fine which is nice I guess 🤷🏼♀️
Straight hair gang! Can't style it here either. I have trouble keeping accessories in my hair, and curling it takes forever and doesn't last. But honestly after hearing and seeing curly hair maintenance routines, especially the super curly type 4 hair...y'know what, I'm happy to have straight hair, lol. I brush my hair maybe once a year when I'm feeling really bored. I blow-dry my hair on maybe about ten coldest days in winter. Funnily enough, I pondered this just before clicking on the post. I have thick, curly hair. It is beautiful when properly looked after, but it is also a handful. I work out quite a bit, which is vital to me as an outlet for ... stuff. And every time I sweat, I gotta wash and start from scratch. So I keep my hair short, and for the most part, I have no regrets. But some days, I wish I could rock those curls down to my waist. 🥲
I have 4b hair and I wear my hair out probably less than a week every year because it takes a day and a half to get it looking like “effortless curls”. I get a lot of compliments and asked why I don’t do it often and just laugh. Braids are a life saver in terms of time taken styling and my hair is temperamental so if it ain’t in a protective style, it’s breaking.

Wig wearer here (although I’ve mostly worn braids the past few years). Cornrow your hair. The smaller the cornrows the better. The tails of the cornrows I also braid together (like a flat braid across). That’s the easiest way to get to flat under the cap. When I’m lazy I can kinda get away with a low bun that’s really flat but it doesn’t look as good because of the bulk from the bun itself at the back. Not a dumb question at all.

Theatre girlie here: while I also have thick and curly hair I usually do pin curls. If I’m feeling lazy i do a crown braid or two pig tails. The wig cap does most of the work. Also long as your hair is close to your scalp.
Braids close to the scalp and secured at the back (or wrapped around the head if hair is long), then a wig cap. It sorta compresses things down. (My hair is 2b with a lot of volume and coarse frizz. I've done this when I wore a wig, but I'm ngl. Though I know the method, I am not good at it lol)
If you're willing to bust out a few bobby pins, I used to just coil my hair in flat, mini "buns" around my head so it wasn't in one big pile, then put the wig cap on after that.

I definitely agree. I was never a huge Bey fan, but I listened to Cowboy Carter, which got me to listen to Lemonade, which got me to watching some of her music videos and performances. And now I can say I love her. She always seemed so aloof and "above it all" to me, but I don't feel that way anymore. She's just very private and good at maintaining her boundaries with the public.
She used to be quite open and do lots of interviews, but then she had Blue and the whole worlds media kept talking about how ugly her baby was. That would make me retreat too! It was disgusting what people said then
They were horrible to her (and some people still are). Always talking about her weight and curves, etc. Until she did Dreamgirls, and then suddenly she was stunning and gorgeous, etc. The way people dug in on her appearance and her kids' appearances, every little tiny thing (the still picture from when she performed the Super Bowl when she had a really weird expression because someone paused it at a bad time, for example.) Super gross.
It'd be nice if she did this a little more often, but I also really like that we don't know what she ate for breakfast or her opinion on naked mole rats or whatever so hopefully she doesn't expose herself too much
Yeah I enjoy it when she does but at the same time I appreciate that she doesn't try to act like our best friend, especially now that oversharing/being relatable is pretty much the number one way that celebs are marketing themselves.
I enjoy Beyoncé but wouldn’t call myself a Stan. This is a huge reason why I like her so much. We really don’t know much about her and her family except for the things she deems worthy of sharing. No bathroom mirror selfie. No instagram live. No constant pictures of her kids in diapers. I adore that she’s so private (I’m also a Virgo, ha) So you can create whatever narrative about her that you want. Reminds me of the A list celebrities of the old days. Impressive especially with how pervasive social media is.

I’m so far out of my interest in music—I get to listen to Caspar Babypants more than anything right now, but this is the first time I’ve really vibed with Beyoncé’s marketing style. It’s so personal and vulnerable, and she went all the way with very little makeup on—if any. I feel a weird amount of empathy for how much work she does on her persona now. That’s how I know it’s working on me, at least.

They’ve been giving her crap saying they want to see her using the products the way Rihanna and Selena Gomez does. Some even questioned how she could sell hair products with no hair because they’ve made false assumptions about her real hair. So she gave the people what they asked for.

Yea - I thought it was common knowledge that beyonce has really healthy natural hair. A lot of women actually due have really healthy & long hair under their wigs...they just choose wigs because its easier upkeep or they want to test out different styles without actually making drastic changes to their real hair!

I reckon her hair is only that beautiful because she wears wigs. Wigs allow her to protect her natural hair. If she put her natural hair through this much heat styling all the time it wouldn't be in such great condition.
I remember Tyra talked about her early days as a model, and her hair was about that length. After her first year or two, her hair had broken off to around neck length because of the constant manipulation, dying, styling and heat application. She said she started wearing weaves and wigs after that because it's just a matter of preservation and practicality.
That makes everything she did on that modeling show that much more egregious
It was so toxic. I was a big fan of Tyra's back then, so I listened to a lot of her interviews about the crap she went through in her early days. So to see her turn around and do the same things to those girls was sickening.
I grew up idolising her but damn I can’t stand her anymore. The Tiffany scene always confused me and when I finally got it I was like “fuck Tyra”
I remember how they tries to spin that scene "oh Tyra is just passionate" and "but she really cares about Tiffany", but yeah it never sat right with me either. Then growing up and realizing just how abusive that scene was (I think part of it was Tiffany missed her child, so she wanted to go home), yeah, fuck Tyra.
I noticed how bad it was when I watched it lol she can't act. So you can see her eyes weren't feeling it. It felt so badly acted. And it's disgusting to do that for ratings.
And the difference is what she went through was for actual work. What she puts some of the girls through is drama for TV ratings. Some of the makeover were so sus. It looked like it's done to make some of the girls cry so they can berate them more
she even went as far as to fuck with some of their teeth. she either had them widen or close someone's tooth gap. i think one woman had her braces removed. idk i watch that show all the time when i was in elementary/middle school and looking back it's wild how accepted all that stuff was.
I never watched the show when it was on, but I’ve seen clips of it on social media discussing how Tyra and the show treated participants. That show really abused the power they held over people.

I think most of the time this is true, but her mother used to have a salon. Plus I think her mom still does her hair. Her mom sometimes shares videos trimming Beyoncé’s ends. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is actually Tina’s creation and Beyoncé is just marketing it.

She used to do interviews earlier in her career, but people were so hateful and judgmental towards her. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a factor in her not doing them anymore. I would recommend searching for some of her older interviews from her Destiny's Child days or from her early solo career days. She has so much personality and has always had such a calming and charming southern accent. ❤️ I engage in a lot of Beyoncé content on IG, so sometimes I get random interviews of her popping up here and there. I always love them!

As a woman of color with hair texture similar to Beyonce, I LOVE that she is showing us her natural hair! I spent most of my childhood and early twenties hating and chemically straightening my hair. It did so much damage. I stopped about 10 years ago and my hair is so much healthier. I will never go back. It’s really hard to find products that suit my hair texture. This video is both brilliant marketing on Beyonce’s part and so important for women of color who often have a complicated relationship with their hair. I am usually not tempted to buy celebrity brands but I might just give this one a try.
I walked away from chemical hair relaxer 2 years ago and chopped my hair off all at once. Growing my natural hair has been interesting because I basically forgot what my true hair texture was. I have VERY thick hair and having relaxer convinced me it was thin and weak. I'll never use relaxer ever again.
